The Oktober Weinfest of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter) took place on the evening of Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the Embassy House of the German Embassy in Washington, D.C..

Invitation

German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wine,

It is a pleasure to announce that the German Embassy has invited us once again to hold our Oktober Weinfest celebration at the German Embassy House!  And for this event, we will also be introduced to the German Embassy’s new chef, Mikko Kosenen of Mikko Nordic Fine Foods, who also operates a restaurant in Washington, D.C., and was formerly executive chef for the Ambassador of Finland.  Please plan to join us to share our love of German wine, at the German Embassy where the German Wine Society began 46 years ago.

Our “Oktober Weinfest” celebrates the fall harvest season and is being held on the eve of the famed Munich Oktoberfest in Germany., which runs this year from September 16 through October 3.

The Oktober Weinfest will take place on the evening of Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the Embassy House of the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., with admission to the Embassy beginning at 6:00 pm.

Our Oktober Weinfest will feature eleven German wines, representing six wine regions and three grapes. All of the white wines featured in the dinner are from the 2021 vintage, but differ from the 2021 wine in our New Vintages tasting earlier this year, completing the picture of this excellent vintage.  We will begin with a sekt reception on the patio (weather permitting) and followed by a multi-course seated buffet dinner inside the Embassy House.

We anticipate being joined by members of the German Embassy staff. Please take the opportunity to mingle with them and share your interests in German wines and Germany!

The price for this event will be $108 for members, and $118 for non-members.  There will be a 60-person limit on attendance at this event, including Embassy guests, so reserve soon to avoid disappointment.

Report by President Carl Willner

On the evening of September 15, 2023, from 6 pm until about 9:30 pm, the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter held its largest event of the year to date, our Oktober Weinfest at the German Embassy House. The weather cooperated wonderfully, and we were able to enjoy the outdoor patio for an hour before moving inside for our buffet dinner.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Embassy staff Astrid Jakobs de Padua (Minister Counselor for Food and Agriculture) and Dorothee Schneider (Minister Counselor for Economics and Trade), who both joined us for the dinner, as well as by myself as Chapter President. All members of the Chapter Board were able to attend, apart from Karen Stokes who was away on vacation.

We had 64 people registered for the event, and all were able to come (one person who withdrew before the event and got a refund was replaced by another on the wait list).  These included 36 members, 25 non-members, and our 3 Embassy guests.

Chef Mikko Kosonen organized an ample and delicious repast for us including three hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner with a wide variety of choices (fish, sausages, chicken, salads, and breads), and three choices of desserts.

Everyone appeared to enjoy both the quality and quantity of the food, overseen by Chef Mikko’s assistant Chef Jason Garcia and a capable wait staff of four, who ensured that the welcoming sparkling wine, and five flights of two wines each during dinner (paired red, trocken white, Kabinett, Spatlese, and Auslese), were served in proper order and the right quantities.

All the wines came from MacArthur Beverages, and alll the whites chosen for the dinner were of the 2021 vintage, though none of those had been served at Phil Bernstein’s 2021 New Vintage presentation earlier this year.  For those who came to both events this year, we have provided a quite extensive picture of the 2021 vintage, at least with respect to Rieslings.

Guests all appeared to be enjoying themselves, and I heard many favorable comments, with conversations continuing at most tables even after all the food and wine was served.  We had used assigned seating to ensure that friends could all sit together without a rush for tables, and gave guests the opportunity to express their seating preferences in advance, all of which were honored.

Of note, we had five friends who were all part of a Wine Explorers group on Meetup who joined us for this event, most for the first time.  We had more Meetup signups for this event than I had ever seen before, and all of them were sent reminders about registering through our website too.

Tasting at Weingut Seufert in Iphofen, Franken, a Niche Producer of "Natural Wines", with Laura Seufert - Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours

Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours took place from Monday, June 19, 2023 to Thursday, June 29, 2023.

In Franken, we visited 5 wineries.

Weingut Seufert in Iphofen, Franken

Weingut Wirsching (VDP) in Iphofen, Franken

Weingut Weltner (VDP) in Rödelsee, Franken

Weingut Juliusspital (VDP) in Würzburg, Franken

Weingut Rudolf May (VDP) in Retzstadt, Franken

The visit of Weingut Seufert was a tasting-only visit, with Laura Seufert, who has taken over the winery only recently and who is pushing the winery towards "natural wines". In a short period, Laura has established itself as a major force in Germany's natural wine scene.

Franken

Franken, located in the northern part of Bavaria, boasts a long winemaking tradition and some fine terroirs (mostly shell limestone and Keuper, a kind of marl). Its two leading grape varieties are Riesling and Silvaner.

Typically, Franken wine comes in the distinctive, dumpily-rounded Franken “Bocksbeutel” wine bottle. The bottle’s unusual shape dates back to at least the 16th century. The Bocksbeutel can only be used for Franken wines.

With delicate vegetal aromas and moderate acidity, wines made from the Silvaner grape are the perfect pairing for the white asparagus that emerges from the earth to fill German grocery stores and market stalls annually between April and June and graces lunch and dinner tables literally every day during that period. There is a young generation of winemakers that consider Silvaner as a national counterpoint to Burgundian Chardonnay or Saumur Chenin Blanc.

Weingut Seufert in Iphofen, Franken

Today, it is Laura Seufert, fourth generation of the Seufert family, who works the vines at the foot of the Schwanberg, in Iphofen’s traditional vineyards: Julius-Echter-Berg, Kalb, and Kronsberg.

Laura began her apprenticeship as a winemaker in 2007, learning and working at various wineries in Germany’s Rheingau region, in Switzerland, Alto Adige, and in New Zealand. She then studied enology at the University of Geisenheim before joining her family estate in 2017.

She is part of the new generation of German winemakers dedicated to protecting the environment, to treat nature with respect, and to work without disturbing nature’s equilibrium, hence to stay away from herbicides, insecticides, and artificial fertilizers.

She launched her own line of natural wines - combining Franken tradition with a drive for experimentation. Her bottlings are a pure, adventurous and honest expression of the region, made with a deep love for the natural environment. The decision to farm organically is decisive in counteracting more and more frequent periods of dryness, a direct effect of climate change.

Laura Seufert - www.wijnhuis.amsterdam/nl

Based in the village of Iphofen, Laura is a fourth-generation winemaker whose family has long been producing authentic wines with strong character. The natural way of working is of supreme importance to them - live and let live is their proud motto - treating nature with respect and disturbing it as little as possible. They work without pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers, while sowing their vineyards with herbs and grasses to create a habitat for bees, earthworms and other beneficial organisms.

Laura began her apprenticeship as a winemaker in 2007, learning and working at various wineries in Rheingau, Ticino, South Tyrol and New Zealand. She studied viticulture & oenology at the university of Geisenheim, before joining her family estate in 2017 and launching her own line of natural wines - combining Franconian tradition with a drive for experimentation. Her bottlings are a pure, adventurous and honest expression of the region, made with a deep love for the natural environment.

Red and White Grape Varieties in Germany - Trends (September 2023)

Red and White Grape Varieties in Germany - Trends (September 2023)

The Association of American Wine Economists, of which I am a member, published 3 most interesting charts concerning the structur of German wine over the past 30 to 60 years.

In terms of the mix between white and red grape varieties, up to the turn of the century, Germany  as the share of red grape varities was increasing rapidly, reaching almost 40 percent of total output. This development, however, has stopped and in the last 20 years the share of red grape varieties in the total is falling again, although only very slowly.

Today, red grape varieties account for about 35 percent and white grape varieties to about 45 percent of total production.

Within this overall trend, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) is the most important red grape variety in Germany. It has increased from hectars 2.000 to hectar 12.000 in the past 60 years. Germany has become the #3 producer of Pinot Noir in the world, after France and the USA.

Dornfelder was also on the rise, but has started to decline in 2010, reflecting the shift to premium and ultra-premium red wine production. The other rising red grape variety is Lemberger/ Blaufränkisch, but its production is limited to Württemberg.

On the white wine side, the dominat grape variety is Riesling, accounting for a large part of the total and growing. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner, both important white grape varieties in the 1960s, are rapidly loosing their weight. While decling overall, in Franken, Silvaner continues to be on the rise, as Silvaner is increasingly becoming the signature grape variety of Franken. The other grape varieties to watch are Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) and Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) both displyaing steady growth for the last 30 years. Germany is now the #1 producer for Weissburgunder and the #2 producer for Grauburgunder in the world.

Until the early 20th century, Elbling was Germany's most planted variety, after which it was eclipsed by Silvaner during the middle of the 20th century. After a few decades in the top spot, in the late 1960s Silvaner was overtaken by the high-yielding Müller-Thurgau, which in turn started to lose ground in the 1980s. From the mid-1990s, Riesling became the most planted variety.

Nicolas Quillé (MW): Overview of German Wine - Regions, Grape Varieties and New Labeling Rules

...German vineyards are planted with 2/3 white grapes and 1/3 reds grapes but be aware that there is a strong movement towards more red grapes, and especially Pinot Noir. Germany is the home of the Riesling grape (35% of global production) and it accounts for 24% of all German plantings. The other varieties that Germany can claim global leadership include Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Muller Thurgau, and Silvaner. Other quintessential northern European varieties planted in Germany includes Pinot Gris (Grauerburgunder), Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder), Trollinger (aka Schiava Grossa) & Lemberger. Germany has an historical interest in grape hybridization (many developed domestically) and among the most popular are red grapes that were planted because of their high yields during cooler times such as Dornfelder (complex cross of Pinot Noir, Trollinger, Blaufrankish: dark and floral), as well as productive white crosses such as Muller Thurgau (Riesling x Madeleine Royale), Bacchus (Silvaner, Riesling, Muller) and Scheurebe. Finally, a few French international varieties are starting also to be planted such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

Of all German wines, it is Riesling that captures the attention. Its great versatility allows for the making of different wine styles, from dry to sweet, from still to sparkling. Riesling’s intense aromatic (citrus, jasmine) and polarizing balance of high acid and residual sugars create some of the most exquisite wines in the world: There cannot be a serious German wine tasting without a Riesling!...

Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-George, Côte de Nuits - From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

Domaine Faiveley is one of the most admired wine estates in Burgundy. The Faiveley family has run the Domaine for almost two centuries.

We did a cellar tour and a tasting in the cellar.

Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Joseph Faiveley is one of the biggest domains in the Bourgogne and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by (1) the first François, (2) Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, (3) Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, (4) François who recently retired and (5) now his children Eve and Erwan.

Guy Faiveley, a brilliant intellectual who had a collection of diplomas, had the difficult job of succeeding his very colorful father. Yet, with his impetus, the domain doubled in size. François Faiveley took over the domain at the age of 25. He was able to give it a new boost – using a precursor of the sorting table and carrying out cold macerations for example. At the same age as his father, Erwan Faiveley took over the domain in 2007, becoming the seventh generation. Recently, he was joined by his sister Eve.

Initially, the company was a classic négociant, buying and selling wine. Bourgogne wines started to experience greater fame in Louis 14th's reign, when those high up in the King's court and foreign ambassadors in Paris started to take an interest. It was against this background that Pierre Faiveley founded the négociant business in 1825.

But from generation to generation, with a strong commitment to the quality of Burgundy’s patrimony, the Faiveley family has purchased vineyards and is today among the largest owners of classified vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise.

In 2013, Domaine Faiveley acquired 20 hectares of vines previously owned by Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, which is based in Gevrey-Chambertin. All together, the firm now owns 123 hectares of vineyards among which 12 hectares are grands crus and 27 premiers crus.

Along with this focus, Erwan and Eve Faiveley and General Manager Bernard Hervet have renovated the cellars, which now boast state-of-the-art barrel presses, custom-designed wooden vats and among the finest, air-cured oak casks available in the world. Unlike many wine growers, Domaine Faiveley has united the management of its vineyards and its cellar under the direction of one technical director, Jerome Flous.

The grapes are entirely destemmed and fermented in new custom-designed wooden vats for the finer wines, conical stainless steel tanks for the lesser cuvées. Fermentation is slow and at low temperatures.

Wines mature afterwards in oak barrels in 19th century vault cellars that offer ideal conditions for long ageing. These barrels coming from great coopers have been rigorously selected for their fine grain and light toast. Both premier and grand cru wines may receive two-thirds new wood.

Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best.

Faiveley’s white wines are both silky and powerful. They bring together purity, tension and minerality. The red wines are the perfect illustration of a successful marriage of elegance, precision and concentration.

This write up is based on what I learnt during recent tours and tastings at Domaine Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-Georges and the Faiveley web site, supplemented by the excellent write-ups on the web site of Berry Bros. and Rudd as well as Frederic Wildmann.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla Visit Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé, Appellation Pessac-Léognan - as does Ombiasy WineTours by Annette Schiller, Most Recently in 2022

After politics in Paris, King Charles III concluded his three-day state visit to France with a trip down south to Bordeaux on Friday to focus on a more personal passion: the environment. As part of his trip to Bordeaux, King Charles III and Queen Camilla about 2 hours at Château Smith Haut Lafitte, where the harvest is currently underway.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is an estate that Annette Schiller likes to visit on her Bordeaux Tour by ombiasy WineTours. Most recently, we visited Château Smith Haut Lafitte on Bordeaux 2022 by ombiasy WineTours. See: Winery Tour and Tasting at Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé Appellation Pessac-Léognan - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

Decanter: Florence Cathiard, co-owner of Château Smith Haut Lafitte and president of the wine tourism board, told decanter.com: ‘It is a huge honour to be selected for the visit, and it will be a great pleasure.

‘I have always been a fan of King Charles, ever since I met him at his last polo match at Ash Farm 20 years ago. We talked together, and he knew my wine.

‘We talked about organic wine and biodiversity. I am sure he does not remember me, as he meets so many people, but he was a real inspiration to me. He was really ahead of his time with organic farming and biodiversity.

‘At the time, not many producers were doing organic farming. We did not have anyone to guide us, but we took inspiration from him, and he gave me the confidence to pursue it.’

Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte and Florence and Daniel Cathiard

The noble Bosq family started growing grapes here as early as 1365. The property was purchased in the 18th century by Scotsman George Smith, who gave the estate its present name. He also built the manor house and exported his – by now famous – wine to England on his own ships. Current owners are Florence and Daniel Cathiard.

Both Florence and Daniel were professional skiers belonging to the French Olympic ski team in the mid-1960s (with triple gold medal legend at the 1968 Winter Olympics Jean-Claude Killy). After their career in sports, Daniel built a supermarket and sporting goods store imperium and Florence an advertising agency. In 1990 they bought Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte with the wealth generated by the sale of all their assets. They brought the quality of Smith-Haut-Lafitte wines to the level for which they were once renowned.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Bordeaux producer from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Grands Crus Classé for red wine in the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959. The winery and vineyards are located south of the city of Bordeaux, in the commune of Martillac.

The estate originates in the 14th century with the house of Verrier Du Boscq who planted vines on a gravelly plateau named Lafitte already in 1365. In 1720 it was bought by the Scotsman Georges Smith who added his name to the lieu-dit and who built the manor house of the property.

The Louis Eschenauer Company bought the estate in 1958, after having already distributed the wine from the early 20th century. In 1990, Florence and Daniel Cathiard bought Smith Haut Lafitte and embarked on a major renovation and investment program.

The vineyard area consists of 67 hectares, 56 hectares of which are planted with red grape varieties (55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc). The remaining 11 hectares are cultivated with white varieties (90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris). The vineyards are located on a gravel ridge to the east of Château Haut-Bailly.

The grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats and the wine is then matured in oak barrels (50% new) for 15-18 months. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Grand vin, Château Smith Haut Lafitte, is annually produced in 10,000 cases of the red wine and 2,500 cases of the dry white. The second wine, Les Hauts de Smith, has a production of 5,500 cases, and exists in red, white and rosé versions. The rosé is produced as a Bordeaux AOC.

Château Smith-Haut-Lafite has been transformed during the last decade from being a perennial underachiever to being one of the leading estates in the Graves region. Before the arrival of the Cathiard Family, Château Smith Haut Lafitte - though a Classified Growth of the Graves region - bore the nickname of Sleeping Beauty.

Daniel and Florence Cathiard invested heavily, restored buildings, replaced vats, constructed a new barrel cellar, converted vineyard practices to sustainable farming and paid detailed attention to hand picking, sorting, and practices in the cellar. The proportion of new oak barrels used in the maturation process was increased and a trio of eminent oenologists (including Michel Rolland) was hired as consultants.

Having raised the wine of Smith to the highest level of quality, Daniel and Florence Cathiard were not happy to leave it at that: they also restored the 16th-century tower, renovated the 18th-century chartreuse, refurbished two underground cellars and started up a cooperage on the premises.

Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.
Following a visit of:

Tour and Tasting at Weingut Neumeister, Straden, Vulkanland, Steiermark, with Christoph Neumeister - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

we explored in depth the beautiful, hilly Südsteiermark region which is famous for its crisp white wines. There is brilliantly fresh Sauvignon Blanc, delicious Welschriesling, crisp Schilcher and fruity Muskateller or Traminer. But also Burgundy varieties, above all Chardonnay - called Morillon here - thrive splendidly in Austria's southernmost wine-growing region. Nevertheless Sauvignon Blanc is king here.
We visited the following wineries in the Südsteiermark:
Weingut Sattlerhof, Sernau, Südsteiermark

Weingut Wohlmuth, Kitzek, Südsteiermark

Weingut Trummer, Spielfeld, Südsteiermark

Weingut Polz, Strass, Südsteiermark

Weingut Tement, Ehrenhausen, Südsteiermark
The visit of Weingut Sattlerhof comprised a visit of the vineyards and the cellar as well as tasting in the modern tasting room of Weingut Sattlerhof.
Juste Sattler, the wife of Andreas Sattler, was our host. Andreas has a bachelor’s degree in oenology and has been responsible for the cellar since 2014
Weingut Sattlerhoif is represented in the USA by Vineyard Brands.

Weingut Sattlerhof, Sernau, Südsteiermark

The idyllic Sattlerhof in Sernau, perched on a hill near Gamlitz in the middle of a vineyard, has been family-owned since 1887.

The winery belongs to the top addresses in Austria and the world, since the US magazine ‘Wine & Spirits’ included the Sattlerhof into the list of the 100 best wineries in the world in 2020.

Wilhelm Sattler sen. is considered a pioneer of dry winemaking in Styria, for which he was awarded the state's Golden Medal of Honor. Willi and Maria Sattler are running the winery together with their sons Andreas and Alexander.

The 87 acres of vineyards have vines up to 55 years old and are located in well-known sites such as Kranachberg, Sernauberg and the Pfarrweingarten monopoly site on steep slopes with an incline of up to 70 percent. Perfect physiological ripeness of the grapes, selective hand harvesting and puristic vinification are some of the artisanal steps with which the family has kept the quality of the wines at such high standards for decades.

The sons shifted to biodynamic winemaking with the aim that this meticulous working method allows the character of the excellent vineyards to evolve in the bottle even more.

About the Winery - Vineyard Brands

The Sattler family has been in the wine business in the village of Gamlitz, Austria, since the late 1880s. The family has a long tradition of quality and innovation, with Wilhelm Sattler Senior and his wife Aloisia laying the foundation for success beginning in the 1960s. Today the two Sattler brothers, Willi and Hannes, are leading the estate with the new generation by their side. The Sattlerhof winery is now responsible for 40 hectares (99 acres) of organically farmed vines in some of the region’s most famous vineyards, including “grand crus” Kranachberg and Pfarrweingarten. The family places great value on working closely with nature to produce their wines, caring for sustainable soil management and longevity of the vines; their vineyards are a complex, balanced habitat, and the preservation of biodiversity is a central focus.

Fritz Haag, Carl Loewen and Dr. Loosen have been selected as one of the Wine & Spirits Magazine Top 100 Wineries of 2023. Fritz Haag and Dr. Loosen are imported by Loosen Brothers and Carl Loewn by Skurnik.

Inclusion in the Top 100 is based on the overall strength of the portfolio. The magazine writes, “The wines of these renowned producers have received the highest accolades from the magazine’s editors in the course of their 300+ blind tastings of more than 9,000 wines.”

The Fall Issue, which proles each of the featured Top 100 Wineries, will hit shelves on October 3rd.

The magazine adds, “we will host our 20th Annual Top 100 Tasting on Thursday, October 11, 2023.

W&S has invited the 100 wineries who’ve performed at the very top of our tastings for a night of food, wine and celebration. The evening offers a chance to taste a vast array of exceptional wines, as well as an opportunity to meet winemakers face-to-face.” As in the past, the event will also support NY/NJ Baykeeper and San Francisco Baykeeper.

Weingut Hans Wirsching wines are among the few Franken wines that are exported to the USA, through: German Wine Collection.

Weingut Wirsching (VDP) in Iphofen, Franken

The Wirsching family has been producing wine since 1630 in the village of Iphofen. It is one of the largest privately-owned wineries in Germany.

In the early 1960s two brothers, Hans Wirsching Jr. and Dr. Heinrich Wirsching, ran the estate. Hans Wirsching Jr. focused on winemaking and Dr. Heinrich Wirsching on all other aspects. Thanks to their dedication to Iphofen's vineyards, Iphofen has developed into one of the leading wine-growing communities in all of Franken. The 'new style' that Hans Wirsching had given his wines - fresh, reductive, elegant and slim - has become a trademark.

The early passing of Hans in 1990 did not change the qualities that make Wirsching wines special. The public face of the winery is Andrea Wirsching, daughter of Dr. Heinrich Wirsching. Together with her younger half-sister, Lena, they are carrying on the 350-year family wine making tradition.

The iconic Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg is one of Franconia's prime vineyard sites. Its namesake is the famous Prince Bishop Julius Echter of Mespelbrunn.

Hans Wirsching Sr. is considered 'The Father' here, because in the early 1920s it was his idea to name the best vineyard site of Iphofen 'Julius-Echter-Berg'.

Weingut Hans Wirsching - German Wine Collection

Weingut Hans Wirsching is one of the largest privately owned family estates in Germany, situated in the picturesque medieval town of Iphofen in Franconia, 1.4 hours east of Frankfurt. Now in its 14th generation, the Wirsching family with CEO Andrea Wirsching produces 37,000 cases on 225 acres of vineyards. They focus on Silvaner (40%), the signature grape of the Franconian wine area. 20% of their vineyards are planted with Riesling, the classical German grape, and 7% with Scheurebe, a fruity grape with aromas like Sauvignon Blanc.

In 1630 Hans Wirsching donated a vineyard to the Abbey at Ebrach. The sale is one of the first instances documenting the Wirsching family’s involvement in wine. Throughout the centuries the Wirsching’s have continued their love for, and involvement in, the business of agriculture and wine growing.

In the late 19th century, the phylloxera plague devastated the European wine industry. Andreas Wirsching died at an early age, and his widow focused on a shop which fed children in the village. Andreas’ passing could have easily spelled the end of wine production for the Wirsching family. However, in 1918, Andreas’ son Hans Wirsching returned from World War I. Hans was only 23 at the time, but he made the decision to put all of his energy into rebuilding the vineyards. He not only restarted the winery, but also began the painstaking process of replanting the vineyards with American rootstocks. Hans obtained Scheurebe cuttings from the Annaberg in the early 1950s (like Karl Fuhrmann at Pfeffingen / Pfalz) and transplanted them in the Kronsberg vineyard. We can credit both the Wirsching and Pfeffingen estates, and their pioneering efforts, for making a place for the Scheurebe grape in German viticulture.

Terroir: “Keuper” (Jurassic Clay) is a sediment stone from the time when dinosaurs walked through the swamps 220 million years ago. Layers of Gypsum within that stone give the wines low acidity. The wines of Iphofen are full bodied with hints of herbaceous aromas and elegant fruit components.

As member of the elite wine association VDP-Die Prädikatsweingüter they have very high production and quality standards. The quality levels are VDP.Gutswein (estate), VDP.Ortswein (village), VDP.Erste Lage (Premier Cru), VDP.Große Lage (Grand Cru). Wirsching is member of Fair N’Green, a sustainable certificate.

Weingut Wirsching (Franken/ Germany) in New York at the Wine Spectator Wine Experience 2022, USA/ Germany

Stefan Schindler: Germany is not only Riesling! The oldest document mentioning SILVANER in Germany dates back to 1659, and that’s why the wine-region Franken calls itself „Silvanerheimat“ – the home of Silvaner.

At this year’s New York Wine Experience, organized by Wine Spectator magazine, only one German wine-estate (God knows why?) was invited to pour its wines, and it was not one of the well-known Riesling estates along the Rhine and Mosel rivers.

Andrea Wirsching of Weingut Hans Wirsching in Franken came to New York and was more than happy that for once Silvaner was in the limelight. And I am sure it was not the last time… .

The Wine Spectator/ Kristen Bieler: Speaking of rare birds, the white variety Sylvaner is one that even those of us who taste wine for a living don’t frequently encounter. Most come from Germany, a country that doesn’t get the love and attention it deserves from American wine drinkers, IMHO. This year, Hans Wirsching, a fantastic producer from the Franken region, will be pouring the estate’s 90-point 2019 Silvaner Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg GG (the “GG” means a wine is dry and from a grand cru vineyard), which has a fascinating combination of concentration and austere minerality.

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

Following the visit of Domaine Faively in the morning:

Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-George, Côte de Nuits - From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

we drove to Vosne-Romanée for lunch and a tasting.

The restaurant, where we had lunch, was part of the upscale Hotel Le Richebourg, which was part of the prestigious Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. The estate has about 75 acres of land in around 35 different vineyards including four grand cru parcels: Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux, Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg.

We had lunch at Restaurant Le Vintage, followed by a tasting with Sommelier Emmanuel Thibout of wines from Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret.

Mongeard Mugneret - Benchmark Wine Group

The Mongeard family origins date back to 1620 in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy.

Situated in between Dijon and Beaune, the Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret was renamed in 1945 after the marriage of Eugène Mongeard and Edmée Mugneret which allowed both families vineyards to combine, thus increasing the size of their joint domaine.

Their son Jean began bottling wine for the first time and released it commercially under the new name. Jean also began selling estate fruit to high-end producers such as Marquis d’Angerville and Henri Gouges.

Today the estate has about 75 acres of land in around 35 different vineyards including four grand cru parcels: Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux, Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg. With a specialty in producing high-end examples of the Pinot Noir grape vartiety, the domaine also releases some Chardonnay and Aligoté white wines.

About the Winery - Vineyard Brands

The Mongeard family arrived in Vosne-Romanée in the eighteenth century, with records showing a Mongeard working as vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1786. In 1945, Jean Mongeard, whose mother was a Mugneret, found himself making wine at the age of 16 in the place of his father who had died years earlier. The entire 1945 crop was purchased by Baron le Roy, Marquis d’Angerville, and Henri Gouges. Gouges instructed the young Mongeard to personally bottle the wines, rather than sell in barrel. In 1975, Vincent Mongeard, Jean’s son, began working alongside his father and became responsible for viticulture and vinification of the domaine’s wines. He persuaded his father to return to the traditional method of bottling, without filtration, filtering only with certain vintages. Jean Mongeard retired in 1995, and Vincent assumed complete leadership of the domaine.

Today, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret covers a total area of more than 75 acres, split among 35 appellations. The varied range of climats in which the Mongeards own vineyards results, naturally, in wines of great diversity.

In the Steiermark, the focus was on the hilly Südsteiermark region which is famous for its crisp white wines.
Weingut Sattlerhof, Sernau, Südsteiermark. See: Tour and Tasting at Weingut Sattlerhof, Steiermark, with Justė Sattler- Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours
Weingut Wohlmuth, Kitzek, Südsteiermark

Weingut Tement, Ehrenhausen, Südsteiermark
We stayed 2 nights at Weinrefugium Brolli and had dinner at there. See:Dinner with a View at Weinrefugium Brolli, Steiermark- Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

Following the visit of Weingut Sattlerhof, we went to Kitzek to visit Weingut Wohlmuth. We were received by Maria Wohlmuth.

Weingut Wohlmuth is available in the USA through Weygandt-Metzler.

Weingut Wohlmuth, Kitzek, Südsteiermark

The Wohlmuth family has been growing wine at the foot of the Kitzecker mountains for over 200 years.

The winery is now managed by Gerhard Wohlmuth jun. He receives active support from Gerhard sen. and the family.

The passionate and always in a good mood winegrower family has proven over many years that they have a knack for the barren slate soils in Sausal and are not afraid of the hard manual work in the steep slopes at over 500m above sea level. Influenced by slate and the climate at this higher altitude, the Wohlmuth wines always show more structure and minerality than the rest of Südsteiermark.

Sauvignon Blanc, the most important variety at the winery, naturally benefits from this in particular, but the numerous other white grape varieties also produce excellent wines on the slate soil. The Gelber Muskateller Steinriegl, otherwise often a rather harmless, floral affair, is a tightly structured, mineral wine experience from the Wohlmuths.

The Wohlmuth winery has long since established itself as one of the top producers in the Steiermark, as evidenced by regular top ratings in all wine guides.

Weingut Wohlmuth - Weygandt-Metzler

The Wohlmuths have been cultivating wine in Kitzeck-Sausal for over 200 years. Now, as then, the solid slate formations in the soil are pounded by hammer to plant each new vine. For generations, some of the earliest mentioned single vineyards in Austria have been owned by the Wohlmuth family. This is exemplified best by the Edelschuh vineyard, first mentioned in documentation in 1322. Preserving centuries-old single sites and re-cultivating other faded vineyards means accepting incredible trials and challenges.

The vineyards lie at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters above sea level and with a slope of up to 90 percent, they are among the steepest vineyards in Europe. Up to 1,200 hours of work go into each hectare of these extreme vineyards every year. Labor-intensive hand cultivation is thus inherently at the heart of the estate's work, from pruning to the entire foilage work to the selective hand harvest. These single vineyards and the Kitzeck-Sausal appellation itself produces wines characterized by the tension between warmth (Illyrian climate, ripe grapes) and coolness (Alpine influence, poor slate soils, high altitude).

Weingut Wohlmuth was one of the first Austrian producers I wrote about when I started my wine blog in 2009. When we visited Weingut Wohlmuth Gerhard Wohlmuth sen. was our out host.

Weingut Wohlmuth is one of the first Austrian wineries I visited and wrote about on my blog schiller-wine. I have very good memories of the visit in 2011, followed by dinner at the Steirerland Restaurant.

Austria: Moving to an Burgundy-style Vineyard Classification

Press Release 2023-08-21– The recently adopted Wine Law Collective Decree has established the legal basis for the official classification of Austria’s single vineyards. The Ordinance defines two tiers: “Erste Lage” (premier cru) and “Große Lage” (grand cru). Classification is carried out according to a strict list of criteria. The first vineyard classifications can be expected in 2025, at the earliest.

Various private initiatives for classifying single vineyards – known as “Rieds” in Austria – have been in place in Austria for many years. These initiatives identify those of its members’ vineyards that have gained a name for producing first-class wines. Following an intense preliminary phase, the Wine Law Collective Decree 2023 has now established the legal basis for an official, nationwide classification system. It outlines two tiers of classification. The “Erste Lage” (premier cru) is the first level that a vineyard can attain. Once a minimum of five years has elapsed, the vineyard is able to be defined as a “Große Lage” (grand cru).

“The Collective Decree 2023 has defined the legal basis for enabling Austrian Rieds to be classed officially according to a standardised system,” explains Chris Yorke, CEO of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (Austrian Wine). “The decision whether to classify Rieds is up to each wine-growing region because the significance of single vineyards differs from region to region,” Yorke adds.

Lower maximum yield per hectare and harvesting by hand required

The decree outlines the general conditions required for the classification of a vineyard. For example, the use of “Erste Lage” and “Große Lage” is only permitted on DAC wines from classified vineyards. Furthermore, the wine-growing region from where the wine originates must have defined the three DAC levels of Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein (villages wine) and Riedenwein (single-vineyard wine). The decree also states that “Erste Lage” and “Große Lage” can only be used when the wine has been harvested by hand and a lower maximum yield per hectare than the legal limit is met.

Detailed documentation is essential

If a wine-growing region wants to classify its leading vineyards, the Regional Wine Committee must submit an application to the National Wine Committee. A classification document containing detailed information needs to be completed for each Ried. This covers facts such as the historical significance of the vineyard, the homogeneity of its soil, geological characteristics, climate and orientation, as well as the volume and value of the wines that the Ried produces. A Ried also has to provide evidence of other factors that demonstrate its potential for producing high-quality wines, e.g. national and international wine ratings. For a Ried to receive the designation of “Große Lage”, it must have been an “Erste Lage” for at least five years and further requirements for the use of the term “Große Lage” will have to be defined.

“Establishing an official vineyard classification system at a national level presents considerable challenges,” emphasizes Yorke. “This is why we will be supporting the wine-growing regions with the process step by step over the next few years and continuously sharing our experiences.” The first “Erste Lage” classifications are not expected before 2025.

Legal basis for an official vineyard classification system

The Wine Law Collective Decree defines the legal basis

Two tiers:
  • “Erste Lage”
“Große Lage” (at least 5 years after having been designated an “Erste Lage”)
Conditions for the use of the terms “Erste Lage” and “Große Lage” include:
  • DAC wines from classified Rieds (single vineyards)
  • lower maximum yield per hectare than the legal limit
  • harvesting by hand
The classification process:
  • Regional Wine Committees submit an application to the National Wine Committee on behalf of the Ried(s)
  • Classification document for each candidate Ried, including information about:
    • the historical significance of the vineyard
    • homogeneity of the soil, geological characteristics, climate and orientation
    • national and international ratings of the Ried’s wines
  • The first classifications are expected in 2025, at the earliest.schiller-wine: Related Postings

Weingut Weltner (VDP) in Rödelsee, Franken

The Weltner family can trace back its roots as winemakers to 1553; for four generation in Rödelsee. Since 2005 Paul Weltner is at the helm of the wine estate of 28 acres. He was well prepared when he took over the responsibility: after an apprenticeship as a cooper and a training in Burgundy and at Weingut Ökonimierat Rebholz, one of the best of the best wine estates in Germany, he graduated as viticultural technician from the renowned Weinsberg school of viticulture. He produces wines that are demanding. They are individualistic and challenging. The focus is on Silvaner. The unique vineyard site ‘Rödelseer Küchenmeister’ is the perfect location for this grape: it has such a geological variety. There are different layers of gypsum keuper, clay, slate, shell-limestone, sandstone.

I quote the Vinum Weinguide November 2022: “For a while already Paul Weltner is at the very top in Germany’s wine landscape, and that's a good thing. It's hard to imagine life without him up there, with reliable calm and serenity, he delivers wines that show such brilliance, minerality and depth that you actually want to buy everything without tasting. And we know how well his wines can mature, so feel free to put it away. Above all, his Silvaner, grown on the gypsum keuper typical of Rödelsee, makes it clear that he always has to be on the list when it comes to the best of this kind in Germany.”

“THE EXPANSION OF THE CELLAR SHOULDN’T OBSCURE THE CORE OF THE BUILDING’S ORIGINS.”
PAUL WELTNER SPEAKS ABOUT HIS WINES AND WINE ESTATE IN RÖDELSEE

VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Paul Weltner: We are the oldest winery in Rödelsee, now in its 4th generation. And we manage to create an inimitable classic from a special climatic niche of the Schwanberg in the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® KÜCHENMEISTER. Savoury-spicy, expressive and elegant wines grow here in a south-westerly aspect on the Gipskeuper formation with estheria and myophoria fossil layers. Particularly Sylvaner, which occupies 60 % of our estate’s vineyard area, produces inimitable, fine wines with tremendous ageing potential.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Paul Weltner: Environmentally friendly cultivation with attentive handcraft and sensitivity for the vines and healthy, vital soils. For us, this is the foundation for lively, unique wines.

VDP: To what wine style do you aspire?

Paul Weltner: Fine wines that distinctly reflect their origins – finesse and intrinsic concentration are united in the wines of the Schwanberg. Of course, our favourite variety is Sylvaner.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Paul Weltner: The Silvaner VDP.GUTSWEIN is a great demonstration of how much fun a fully fermented wine can be. A wine that excels with extract and shows how much is already found in a Sylvaner of this category.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Paul Weltner: KITCHENMEISTER Sylvaner GG is such an icon wine that you can only inherit in such a family. This wonderful multi-layered, ever-changing, vibrant wine fascinates again each year with new fine facets.

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Paul Weltner: After a gradual introduction to the profession, everything outside Franken appeared more interesting. I discovered juicy and fruity wines and wanted to break with the local style at a young age. And then, from a distance I began to appreciate the unique attributes of the Franken style!

VDP: Do you have role models or mentors?

Paul Weltner: People who are open to new things and interested in life have always been inspiring. I’m quickly bored with thinking inside the box.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Paul Weltner: To retire. :)

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Paul Weltner: I find traditions exciting – to see how our fathers and grandfathers, who had a completely different view of nature, dealt with things. Still, you have to take a close look at these traditions and translate them into the new times. Just like we did with the Bocksbeutel. With a narrow label we don’t accentuate the curves, but instead stretch them out.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Paul Weltner: From Schwanberg, the highest elevation in the Franken wine region, you have a marvellous, expansive view. You can experience sensational sunsets in the southwest orientation of the Küchenmeister vineyard – preferably with a glass of Küchenmeister Sylvaner at hand.

VDP: If your wine were music, what would it be?

Paul Weltner: The VDP.GUTSWEIN Sylvaner is like a Ramones song - it grabs you, spins you around for 1.20 minutes, and then you just look for the repeat button! The single-vineyard Sylvaner is then more like a jazz piece - finer, quieter, more playful. He improvises in the middle section and drifts down in quiet tones - but at the end he always comes back to the point.

Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and I attended a portfolio tasting of Veritable Wines & Estates (USA) at wineLAIR DC yesterday, with Julia Wolf, Hattenheim, Export Manager, and Jesse Becker, Chicago, US Representative.

The 10 producers that Julia and Jesse presented were a most interesting mix of well-established VDP producer and lesser known and upcoming "new kid on the block" producers of red and white, still and sparkling, dry and fruity-sweet wines.

Veritable Wines & Estates (USA) is a brand-new importer of German wines. In fact, this was the very first wine event of Veritable Wines & Estates in the US.

Julia Wolf: Veritable Wines & Estates is a specialized export agency for German wines. Among our partners you will find a selection of top, family-operated wines estates from all major German wine regions.

Jesse Becker: Veritable Wines & Estates provides importers and merchants abroad the opportunity to access a multitude of outstanding German Wines & Estates from a single source. Our mission is to create the optimal link between producers and international distribution, providing our customers innovative solutions tailored to their specific needs and world markets. We operate with passion and flexibility in America, Asia, Europe and Oceania representing our favorite wines and brands from the most charming German wine-growing regions.

Veritable Wines and Estates is owned by Christian Ress (and partners), the fifth-generation owner of Weingut Balthasar Ress, Hattenheim, a German elite estate. Julia Wolf, Veritable Wines & Estates, Export Manager, based in Hattenheim, is the "CEO" of Veritable Wines & Estates (USA). Jesse Becker, based in Chicago, is the US representative of Veritable Wines & Estates. Jesse Becker is a certified Master Sommelier. He is also one of the about 20 new (class of 2023) "German Wine Professional" (a 2-year course organized by the German Wine Institute in Mainz/ Germany).

we went back to Beaune for a visit of Loius Jadot.

The visit of Louis Jadot was very special, because Thibaut Marquis, the US representative for Louis Jadot, based in New York City, was out host.

In the US, we had a number of tastings with him recently in the Washington DC area, including:

A Journey through Bourgogne with Louis Jadot - Tasting at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar with Annette Schiller and Thibaut Marquis.

In September 2023, Thibaut Marquis joined us for the monthly tasting of the American Wine Society/ John Marshall Chapter.

At the forthcoming 56th American Wine Society National Conference, November 9-11, 2023 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Thibaut Marquis will conduct a Louis Jadot taasting, jointly with Annette Schiller.

Maison Louis Jadot in Beaune, Côte de Beaune

The Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the heart of the vineyards, in the center of Beaune. Today Louis Jadot possesses 670 acres of vineyards in Burgundy - of which half lie in the Côte d'Or: Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot, Domaine Louis Jadot, Domaine Gagey and Domaine du Duc de Magenta and vineyards in Beaujolais Cru areas.

It all started in 1826 with the purchase of the Clos des Ursules vineyard in Beaune. The Maison Louis Jadot was founded 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot who focused on the wine trade. He developed the wine trade with the markets in the northern European countries and spread the reputation of Burgundy wines. Subsequently the company was managed by three generations of the Jadot family and more vineyards were acquired.

A decisive moment in the history of the Maison Louis Jadot is the year 1945 when Louis August Jadot met Rudy Knopf, founder of the Kobrand wine import firm in the US. Then Louis Jadot wines were the first Burgundy wines available in the United States markets. Around the 1950s the Gagey family came on board as managing partners. In 1985 Madame Jadot sold the estate to Rudy Knopf.

Today Maison Louis Jadot is owned by Kobrand and managed by Thibault Gagey, third generation of the Gagey family. The Jadot winemaking facility is one of the largest and most advanced in Burgundy and was built to maximize the expression of "terroir" in the wines. They vinify all the grapes coming from their own vineyards as well as the purchased ones under contracts with other growers. True signature of Maison Louis Jadot and immediately recognizable is their label: the head of Bacchus.

Louis Jadot (wine-searcher)

Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers and négociants, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a portfolio that covers everything from inexpensive Bourgogne and Beaujolais wines to several grand cru wines, from the Côte de Beaune to Chablis. Unsurprisingly, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay feature heavily in the portfolio.

The house was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Jadot, although the first vineyard – Clos de Ursules – was purchased in the 1820s. The headquarters remains in Beaune, although vineyard holdings have increased exponentially.

Louis Jadot owns land in some of Burgundy's most famous vineyards, including Le Musigny, Échezeaux, Chapelle-Chambertin and in the famously fragmented Clos de Vougeot vineyard. Louis Jadot wines are also made in Chambertin, Montrachet, Corton and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

As well as the sizeable portfolio of wines made under the Louis Jadot label itself, the house also makes wines for Domaine du Duc de Magenta, and for Domaine Gagey. Andre Gagey took over as general manager for Louis Jadot in 1968 and, along with winemaker Jacques Lardière, was often held responsible for building Jadot's high reputation in the 70s and 80s.

The firm was acquired in 1985 by the owners of US wine importer Kobrand, which still owns the company and imports Jadot's wines into the US.

Gagey, whose son Pierre-Henry Gagey took over as president in 1991, died in 1999 and Lardière retired in 2012. Frédéric Barnier, who joined the company in 2010, has since taken over as head winemaker. Thibault Gagey has since joined his father Pierre-Henry at the helm of the firm.

Jadot is also strongly associated with its in-house cooperage and barrel brand, Cadus, which was established in 1996 in the village Ladoix-Serrigny (just outside Beaune) in cooperation with barrel firm Tonnellerie Vicard. In 2013, Vicard sold its stake in the operation to independent French stave mill Canadell.

A Journey through Bourgogne with Louis Jadot - Tasting at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar Presented by Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and Thibaud Marquis, Louis Jadot

Earlier this year, Annette Schiller and Thibaud Marquis presented 5 wines of Louis Jadot at the weekly tasting of the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar (WWCS), ranging from regional wines to ultra-premium single vineyard wines, white and red. The wines were well received and the presentation highly appreciated by about 75 interested participants.

Title: Dive Deep Into Burgundy With Louis Jadot

Presenters: Thibaut Marquis, North America Export Manager, Louis Jadot and Annette Schiller, Owner, ombiasy PR&WineTours

Abstract: From the tip of Chablis to the toe of Beaujolais, from regional, villages, 1er Cru and Grand Cru appellations, Louis Jadot produces wines that celebrate Burgundy’s diversity, reflecting the natural
differences of soil, aspect and climate. The familiar Bacchus-head label has become the reliable stamp of quality and consistency from what can often be a confusing region. We will take you on a journey that defines Louis Jadot’s 165 years of know-how and expertise in the Burgundy region.

German Unity Day 2023 Celebration at the German Embassy in Washington DC, USA

This year, after a gap, due to covid and other factors, Annette and I were able to participate in the German Unity Day 2023 Celebration at the Residence of the German Ambassador to the United States of America.

Before retiring, I used to be invited as a staff member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Now, after retiring from the IMF, I am on the guest list of the Embassy as Vice-president of the German Wine Sociery (Washington DC Chapter).

Same procedure as every year: You start in the residence of the Ambassador and move down to the "Bayrischer Biergarten" where the evening ends with good music and Bavarian beer. The party ended at 23:00.

We were joined at our table by Gudrun Engel, the Head of the ARD German TV in Washington DC.

"Wein-Oktoberfest" of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter) at the German Embassy in Washington DC, USA

Last time we were at the embassy was about 4 weeks ago, at a much more intimite event, the Oktober Weinfest of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter), which took place on the evening of Friday, September 15, 2023,  at the Embassy House of the German Embassy in Washington, D.C.. At the Oktober Weinfest, there were 60 particiapants, at the German Unitiy Day 2023 Celebrations there were thousands.

German Unity Day - Tag der Deutschen Einheit – October 3

German Unity Day, on October 3rd, is the German national holiday, a sort of German Fourth of July. Both the observance date and the holiday are recent. The third day of October has only been a national holiday since 1990. Why this date?

Before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and German unification in 1990 (known in German as die Wende, the “turning point”), few West Germans even knew the date of their nation’s founding (23 May 1949). It was never celebrated as an official holiday.

East Germany’s national day was October 7 (Tag der Republik), commemorating the founding of the socialist German Democratic Republic in 1949. In West Germany after 1954, the date of June 17 was observed as a national holiday (see below), but it was never anything like July 4th in the US. Since the Nazi era, nationalism and overt patriotism were frowned on by most Germans. Flag-waving was only seen at soccer matches and neo-Nazi gatherings.

The selection of the date for united Germany’s new national day was subject to concerns about events related to Hitler’s rule and Nazi crimes against humanity. Even the day on which the Wall opened in 1989 (November 9) coincided with the date of the infamous Kristallnacht (“night of broken glass”) anti-Jewish pogrom in 1938. Were it not for this unfortunate historical coincidence, November 9 probably would have become the German national holiday.

It would have been a much more appropriate date than the day the German reunification treaty took effect, which is what happened. (By the way, the American Declaration of Independence was approved on July 2, 1776, not on July 4th. The fourth was simply the date at the top of the document, and the date it was sent to the printer. The Declaration was not actually signed until August 2.)

Only One Nationwide Holiday

German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the only federal, nationwide holiday in Germany! All other bank holidays in Germany are determined by the states (Bundesländer), even if some of them are observed nationwide by all the states. German Unity Day is the only holiday mandated by federal law.

Einigungsvertrag (German Unity Treaty)

The 1990 treaty that officially unified East and West Germany and made Berlin a new Bundesland (state) and the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany was signed on August 31 and went into effect on September 29, 1990. The treaty designated October 3 as the day on which the German Democratic Republic officially would become part of the Federal Republic of Germany and subject to that nation’s constitution (Grundgesetz), and that is why the third day of October is now the German national holiday.

Observances

Although you will see German flags flying at the Reichstag building in Berlin and in other public locations, private flags and public fireworks are not a big part of the October 3 celebration. Most people enjoy the day off and spend time with friends and family. Politicians make speeches and there are special TV broadcasts about German history. In Berlin there are usually open-air concerts or other festivities near the Brandenburg Gate.

A unique feature of German Unity Day is an observance in the capital city of one of Germany’s 16 states. Each year the state that is presiding over the Bundesrat (upper house) hosts the celebration, which includes a Bürgerfest (citizens festival).

Key Dates in German History

1871 | Following the establishment of the German Empire (Deutsches Reich) there was no official national holiday, but Sedantag (commemorating a significant victory at the French town of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War on 2 September 1870) was traditionally observed as the Prussian national day.

9 November 1918 | Proclamation of the Weimar Republic following WWI; the constitution was approved on 31 July 1919. The national day was 11 August, the date when President Friedrich Edert signed the Weimar constitution in 1919.

9 November 1938 | Kristallnacht (“night of broken glass”), a nationwide anti-Jewish pogrom conducted by the Nazis in 1938.

17 June 1953 | East German workers’ revolt; the uprising was crushed by the Soviets. In 1954, the date became a West German holiday known as “Tag der deutschen Einheit”. In 1990 there were two “German Unity” days: 17 June and 3 October.

31 August 1990 | The German Unity Treaty (Einigungsvertrag) is approved. It makes October 3rd the official date of German reunification and the new German national day, now called “Tag der
Deutschen Einheit” or German Unity Day.

"Brettljause" and Wine at Buschenschank Trummer, Weingut Trummer, with Jürgen Trummer - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

In the Steiermark, the focus was on the hilly Südsteiermark region which is famous for its crisp white wines.
Weingut Sattlerhof, Sernau, Südsteiermark. See: Tour and Tasting at Weingut Sattlerhof, Steiermark, with Justė Sattler- Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours
Weingut Wohlmuth, Kitzek, Südsteiermark. See: Tour and Tasting at Weingut Wohlmuth, Steiermark, with Maria Wohlmuth - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours
Weingut Trummer, Spielfeld, Südsteiermark

Weingut Polz, Strass, Südsteiermark

Weingut Tement, Ehrenhausen, Südsteiermark
The visit of Weingut Trummer was not a typical winery visit with tasting, but a "Brettljause with Trummer wines at Buschenschank Trummer".

An Austrian Buschenschank is a small inn or wine tavern run by a local wine grower. In addition to being a tavern, some buschenschanks are also small inns which offer comfy rooms for guests along with good food and wine. Others are simply part of a Weingut where you can enjoy their own wines along with homemade foods and breads. Brettljause is a tasty tray of cold Austrian specialty foods with arrangements of salads, meats, and cheeses.

Jürgen Trummer was our host.

Actually, the Brettljause and Wine at Buschenschank Trummer, Weingut Trummer, with Jürgen Trummer was included into the tour schedule only at the very end, after we had met by accident Jürgen Trummer in a Graz wine bar during our February 2023 pre-tour visit of Austria. See: Checking, Fine-tuning, Researching, Pre-gaming in Austria in February 2023 - Wine & Culture Tour to Austria by ombiasy WineTours: May 28 - June 08, 2023

Weingut Trummer, Spielfeld, Südsteiermark

The Trummer winery is a relatively young winery compared to the standard in Austria.

Jürgen Trummer is the third generation. At the age of 21 he took over the responsibility for the vines, the harvest, the grapes and the development of wine estate. The winery and wine tavern are idyllically nestled on the unique Obegg vineyard, which sits directly at the border with Slovenia. The vines grow on a 15 million-year-old limestone reef of dead coral banks, so the soil is pure shell limestone, rarely found anywhere else in the world. The climate is also very unique. Here the alpine marginal climate meets the heat of Pannonia, the warm, flat eastern part of Hungary. This does not always make the
work easy, but it rewards with wines expressing a strong character and great potential for aging.

Styria is a region of precipitation, more rain falls here than in any other Austrian wine-growing region. Hail and heavy rains make viticulture in this beautiful region challenging, to say the least.

In the past, chemical pesticides were used to combat pests and fungal infestation. When Jürgen Trummer took over he immediately converted to organic viticultural practices. He says: “In the course of our conversion to organic viticulture, I have learned to appreciate and love the little things. For example our compost, which is really good for our soil and the vines, and the many plants in the rows
of vines, which do not take away any nutrition from the vines, as has always been wrongly claimed, but rather enrich the biotope and attract important insects. The vineyards (called Rieden in Austria) are also more important to me than ever, because the vineyards and their different terroirs give the wines their character.”

Brettljause & Buschenschank: Gamlitz, Austria’s Amazing Wine Taverns to Visit and Stay

If you’re planning a trip to the wine region of southern Austria (and you should be), you’re likely to come across a unique word to describe one of the country’s most popular cultural traditions — the buschenschank.

And when it comes to food and wine in Austria, buschenschank is as much fun to experience as it is to say!

The term buschenschank literally means ‘bush tavern’ or ‘bough tavern’, referring to the boughs which are tied and hung over a door to show guests there is indeed wine in the house, and welcome them in for a taste of the season’s first pressings.

Buschenschanks are a delightful tradition that continues today throughout Austria, and one that’s highly anticipated by visitors and locals alike. They’re also a great way to explore and slow travel the quaint small towns and villages in Austria for a truly authentic experience.

One more unique delicious tradition to add to your Europe bucket list!

What is a Buschenschank?

An Austrian buschenschank (boo-shen-shank) is a small inn or wine tavern run by a local wine grower. In addition to being a tavern, some buschenschanks are also small inns which offer comfy rooms for guests along with good food and wine. Others are simply part of a weingut (winery) where you can enjoy their own wines along with homemade foods and breads.

To experience the cultural tradition of a buschenschank, Gamlitz in South Styria is the perfect place to start. This small town at the beginning of the South Styrian wine road (Südsteirische Weinstraße) is full of charm.

We were introduced to this Austrian cultural tradition on our first visit to Südsteiermark (South Styria) several years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. South Styria is one of the best day trips from Graz though allow yourself at least 4 or 5 days to slowly travel the wine road.

By law, a buschenschank can only serve cold food usually in the form of local cold-cuts of meat, cheeses, and breads. The buschenschanks are also required to serve only wine, and it must be their own.

Don’t ask for a beer, soft drink, or coffee — they’re not allowed to serve them. But no worries — none of these hard and fast rules detracts from what is a truly fun slow travel cultural experience.

What is Brettljause?

We’re not sure if Brettljause is more fun to say or to eat, but this tasty tray of Austrian specialty foods are common throughout the country. Pronounced brett-el-YOW-za, this local delicacy is called Brettljause and is akin to a charcuterie platter, only taken up a thousand notches.

Brettljause is an elevated presentation, with beautiful arrangements of salads, meats, and cheeses. And you’ll often see fresh flowers adorning the top, like the cherry on top. Yowza!!

And lest you think your meal is going to be a few unsubstantial cold cuts, think again. In addition to the various meats and cheeses, you’ll find seasonal veggies and pickles, fresh hard boiled eggs, and hearty local salads drizzled with local pumpkin seed oil.

These cold cut platters are often a work of art. The tasty tradition of Brettljause features many traditional Austrian foods such as Käferbohnen, or what Austrians call runner beans, or sometimes beetle beans since they look like large black beetles. They’re hearty, filling, healthy, and so delicious.

Heuriger or Buschenschank? What’s the difference?

Most buschenschanks in Austrian wine regions open in the early Fall around the time of the harvest and close for the winter months. Some with guest rooms, however, remain open year round.

It’s the early Fall when the action begins, with the first pressing of grapes, resulting in a drink known as stürm (like a thunder schtoorm). This is the first fermentation and can be a bit sweet and very fizzy. Even though it’s higher in alcohol content than regular wine, Austrians look forward to this beautiful time of year in South Styia and drink stürm with gusto.

Buschenschanks are anything but formal, and you’re sure to make a few new friends. The Austrians love buschenschanks, and now, so do we.

So if you’re going to be enjoying wine and stürm all day, we highly recommend booking a room for an overnight stay at one of these warm and welcoming buschenschanks. The Südsteirische Weinstraße, South Styria Wine Road, is narrow and winding. And except for the dim lights coming from scattered buildings after dark, it is also unlighted. So don’t drink and drive. Plan a few nights there, and slow travel the South Styrian wine road.

Paella by Carlos

For 20 years or so, around this time of the year, Fuad and Maureen have been inviting to a Paella and Sangria Party at their home in McLean, Virginia. At all these parties, the paella was prepared by Carlos.

Carlos has gained some fame over the years and now has his own website Paella by Carlos. This time, I documented the preparation of the paella by Carlos step by step. We had the Paella Tradicinal, with chicken and seafood. It was outstanding.

Paella

Paella is a rice dish originally from Valencia. Paella is regarded as one of Valencia's identifying symbols. It is one of the best-known dishes in Spanish cuisine.

The dish takes its name from the wide, shallow traditional pan used to cook the dish on an open fire, paella being the word for a frying pan in Valencian/Catalan language. As a dish, it may have ancient roots, but in its modern form, it is traced back to the mid-19th century, in the rural area around the Albufera lagoon adjacent to the city of Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

Paella valenciana is the traditional paella of the Valencia region, believed to be the original recipe, and consists of round-grain rice, bajoqueta and tavella (varieties of green beans), rabbit, chicken, sometimes duck, and garrofó (a variety of lima or butter bean), cooked in olive oil and chicken broth. The dish is sometimes seasoned with whole rosemary branches. Traditionally, the yellow color comes from saffron, but turmeric and Calendula can be used as substitutes. Artichoke hearts and stems may be used as seasonal ingredients. Most paella cooks use bomba rice, but Valencians tend to use a cultivar known as senia.

Paella de marisco (seafood paella) replaces meat with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables, while paella mixta (mixed paella) combines meat from livestock, seafood, vegetables, and sometimes beans, with the traditional rice.

History

Muslims in Al-Andalus began rice cultivation around the 10th century. Consequently, eastern Iberian Peninsula locals often made casseroles of rice, fish, and spices for family gatherings and religious feasts, thus establishing the custom of eating rice in Spain. This led to rice becoming a staple by the 15th century. Afterward, it became customary for cooks to combine rice with vegetables, beans, and dry cod, providing an acceptable meal for Lent. Along Spain's Mediterranean coast, rice was predominantly eaten with fish.

Spanish food historian Lourdes March notes that the dish "symbolizes the union and heritage of two important cultures, the Roman, which gives us the utensil and the Arab which brought us the basic food of humanity for centuries: rice."

Weingut Juliusspital (VDP) in Würzburg, Franken

Weingut Rudolf May (VDP) in Retzstadt, Franken

This time, we did not visit Weingut Juliusspital, but only had dinner at the Weinstube Juliusspital, the iconic Juliusspital wine tavern, with wines from Weingut Juliusspital.

During earlier tours, we had also visited the winery Weingut Juliusspital. See: Tour and Tasting at the Historic Weingut Juliusspital in Würzburg, Franken – Germany-North Wine Tour by ombiasy (2014)

After the dinner, some of us went to the "Alte Main Brücke for a "one for the road" glass of wine.

Bürgerspital and Juliusspital

Spital is an archaic term formerly used to mean “hospital” in German and makes up part of the name of the other two big Würzburg wine estates. The Bürgerspital and the Juliusspital were both once hospitals. One of them, the Juliusspital, is still one today. Funding for the hospitals came from wine produced from donated vineyards.

On the 23rd of June, in the year 1319, Johann von Steren established the Bürgerspital zum Heilige Geist to care for the sick and needy citizens of Würzburg. At the same time, he designated certain of his vineyards to provide the necessary financial support.

A couple of centuries later, Prince Bishop Julius Echter followed suit and founded the Juliusspital with the same general goals in mind and a similar motivation: to acquire divine salvation through the mortal and the eternal through the transient.

Today these two institutions are among the oldest and largest wine estates in Germany, with 140 and 170 hectares respectively, and still provide the major source of income for their charities.

Weingut Juliusspital

Weingut Juliusspital is Germany’s second largest winery with 177 hectares under vines.

At the center of the Juliusspital Foundation are a hospital, an assisted living home for elderly people and a hospice. This has been so for more than 400 years. Today, the buildings of the Juliusspital Foundation comprise many modern buildings but also very impressive and well maintained historical buildings.

As to the latter, the Fürstenbau, a palatial building, designed by the architect Antonio Petrini built in the Barock style with its historical cellar vaults, its garden pavilion and the fountain statues of Jacob van der Auvera, make the Juliusspital a unique monument of art and culture at the heart of the city of Würzburg. The historical cellars, which we had the opportunity to visit, with the old traditional wooden casks, are still in use for fermentation and aging.

Since its establishment, the profits of the Weingut Juliusspital have contributed to the financing of the social services of the Juliusspital Foundation. In addition to the vineyard land, the Juliusspital Foundation also owns farm land and forests.

The iconic Juliusspital tavern is part of the Juliusspital complex. It is large. The food is similar to the food at the Bürgerspital tavern. The wines are those of Weingut Bürgerspital. The last time I ate their I had “Nürnberger Bratwürste”.

Visit 2023

After-dinner Drinks on the Alte Mainbrücke

You will not find a wine estate at the Alte Mainbrücke, a stunning 500-year-old stone bridge, but you will find—especially on a sunny day—hundreds of wine drinkers. The bridge crosses the River Main and motor traffic is banned. It has become quite common for the Würzburg citizens, as well as visitors, to stroll across bridge, relax against one of its balustrades, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the amazing view.

On the left bank, you will see the imposing fortress—Festung Marienberg—standing guard over the city from and the Käppele, a beautiful baroque chapel. Along the steep banks of the Main, you can make out the Würzburger Stein. Where do you get your wine?
