Great Germany Map: Wine Country Germany According to "vom Boden", US Importer of German Premium Wine Focusing on Small Growers

$

0

Vom Boden (translated: from the soil) is a leading US importer of German wine with a focus of off-the beaten track, small, innovative winemakers. Recently vom Boden published a map of the German wine regions with the producers that vom Boden import. If I am not mistaken, the map was made for the forthcoming book vom Boden: Ten Years of Hocks & Moselles(To be released November 2023)

I am re-releasing the maps with some pictures vom Boden producers which we visited recently on a ombiasy WineTour by Annette Schiller. Admittedly, the producers we have visited are in the minority. Of course, when people fly over from far away to Germany they are mostly interested in the well-established producers, although Annette always tries to included small, new, innovative winemakes with a view of broadening the perspective of the tour participants. Also, some of the producers do not have the capacity to receive a group of 12 people or so and conduct a proper wine tasting.

Vom Boden

Stephen Bitterolf: Vom Boden is a small company, focusing on small growers, and it will stay that way. The heart of the portfolio is clearly in Germany, though we are proud to represent small estates in Austria, France and the U.S.

All vom Boden winemaker/growers occupy a sort of periphery, either in terms of their geography or how they work in their respective geographies. Vom Boden: the center of the edge.

Our growers work their vineyards in methods that respect their vineyards. This is less a matter of dogma and marketing, less a matter of being organic or biodynamic and more a matter of respect for the land, for doing things the right way (yes, most are working or certified organic and biodynamic).

In all these old world countries, good farming is often part and parcel of preserving sites which have been worked for generations, for the next generation. All in all the growers of vom Boden use rather non-interventionist methods – the clichéd “less is more” thing. The “geek sheets” for each producer (on their respective pages) will give you the details on exactly how each grower works.

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

At Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion in Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, the visit consisted of two parts.

First, Melissa Rion joined us in the bus and took us on a tour of the vineyards of Vosne-Romanée.

Second, we returned to the domaine, where we did a cellar tour and sat down for a tasting with Armelle Rion.

The wines of Domaine Armelle and Bernard Rion are well represented in the Washington DC area via Elite Wines.

Domaine Armelle and Bernard Rion

Domaine Armelle and Bernard Rion was founded in 1880 by Pierre Rion. His son Louis substantially enlarged the domaine. Fourth generation Bernard Rion now manages the Domaine Armelle and Bernard Rion with his wife Armelle and his daughters Alice and Melissa. Alice’s husband Louis is the vineyard manager.

Wine production is very traditional with a high respect for nature. Vineyard management methods rely on natural or very specific products. 'Pheronomes' are diffused around the vineyards to provoke sexual confusion in certain insects eliminating the need to use insecticides. The average vines are over 50 years old and their roots draw nutrition from deep down in the ground.

Bus Tour Through the Vineyards of Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, with Melissa Rion (2023)

Vosne-Romanee Wine (wine searcher)

wine searcher: Vosne-Romanée is a small commune in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits district, known mainly for its red wine from the Pinot Noir grape. Originally named just Vosne, the village took the suffix Romanée in 1866 in honor of its most prized vineyard, La Romanée. It is often grouped together with the neighboring commune of Flagey-Echézeaux; while the villages are entirely separate, their finest vineyards are clustered together immediately north of Vosne-Romanée.

The classic Vosne-Romanée wine is considered by many to have the perfect balance of weight, structure, elegance and longevity. Tasting notes often refer to a combination of tart red fruits (particularly cherries and raspberries) and darker elements of undergrowth, licorice and smoke.

The village has been a known source of quality wines for more than a thousand years, since the arrival of the monks of the Saint-Vivant monastery. Today, it makes wine almost exclusively from Pinot Noir, although up to 15 percent of the local white varieties are permitted, to allow for natural planting variations and mutations. The wines are made under the Vosne-Romanée communal appellation (with about one-third coming from premier cru sites) and six grand cru appellations, each pertaining to a specific vineyard.

The entire surface area of Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru vineyards is only 27 hectares (67 acres – about half the size of the single Clos de Vougeot climat just across the commune boundary). This is divided between six individual sites: La Grand Rue, La Tâche, Richebourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and the most famous, Romanée-Conti. Despite this small surface area, Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru red wines are some of the most respected (and most expensive) in the world.

Vosne-Romanée's best vineyards lie just above the village, on the mid-slopes of the Côte d'Or; this is where the grand cru sites are located. Around these prestigious sites are dotted the Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru vineyards and some entirely unclassified land. The difference between a grand cru vine and one deemed worthy only of the regional Bourgogne appellation is sometimes a matter of a few feet.

Below this mid-slope section the slopes are too shallow to offer any degree of elevation or increased exposure to the sun. On the higher slopes, as the ground rises towards the spine of the Côte d'Or, the mesoclimate cools slightly, reducing the likelihood of the grapes attaining optimum ripeness and complexity.

Vosne-Romanée (Clive Coats)

Clive Coats: Nowhere is wine more noble than in Vosne-Romanée. Between the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru of Boudots to the south and the walls of the Clos de Vougeot at the northern end lie the 240 hectares of Vosne-Romanée vineyard: the most valuable piece of vinous real estate in the world.

Appellation Romanée Conti Grand Cru: The Romanée-Conti vineyard dominates the village, with its wines among the most expensive in the world. It is a monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Around 600 cases are made each year from the vineyard's 1.8 ha.

Appellation La Romanée Grand Cru: La Romanée is a monopole of the Château de Vosne-Romanée. Only 300 cases are made each year from this plot of 0.84 ha.

Appellation La Tâche Grand Cru: La Tâche is Domaine de la Romanée Conti's other monopole, and its 6 ha consist of the vineyards of La Tâche and Les Gaudichots.

Appellation Richebourg Grand Cru: The 8 ha of the Richebourg cru are divided between 10 growers, including Domaine Leroy and Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

Appellation La Grande Rue Grand Cru: The least-renowned of the six grands crus is a monopole of Domaine François Lamarche, and was only promoted from premier cru recently. Its 1.4 hectares lie between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti.

Appellation Romanée Saint Viviant Grand Cru: Domaine de la Romanée Conti owns over half of the area's 9.5 ha.

Although unable to command the same prices as their grand cru neighbors, the village is home to many excellent premier cru wines. Fifty-eight hectares of this is premier cru, and there are 11 of these. Five of them lie just above the grands crus, six on the same altitude or a little further down the slope.

Picture: At Maison Trimbach in Alsace with Hubert Trimbach– Germany-South Wine Tour by ombiasy (2014)

Hubert Trimbach, senior boss of Maison Trimbach, Ribeauvillé, Alsace, France, died earlier this month at age 85.

Annette and I have enjoyed many Trimbach winemaker dinners, mostly with Jean Trimbach, in the Washington DC area and have visited Trimbach in Alsacae several times on wine tours by ombiasy. At one wine tour, the late Hubert Trimbach was our host.

Trimbach

Dear Friends,

It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our brother, uncle and great uncle, Hubert Trimbach.

Did you not know about him? Here is a far too short summary of his involvement in the family field.

In 1963, Hubert joined his older brother Bernard at his departure from HEC Paris. He sees opportunities abroad, so he begins to travel the world for more than 50 years. Hubert was an extraordinary Great Man, and to this day, his name makes more connoisseurs dream. He promoted Trimbach wines and was a fabulous Ambassador for the region.

He must have traveled thousands of miles, by plane, in Concorde, by train, by boat, by car or even by walking, galloping through the streets of the furthest countries in Alsace to visit clients. He was a tireless traveler.

Fervent passionate about wines, great Ambassador of Alsace, very good singer whenever the occasion came, and admirable dancer, he encouraged dinners or tastings like no one else. Charming and charming, funny, intelligent, charismatic, he was a real orator, he was admired only qualities and talent.

Under his look convinced and sometimes a little strict, he let through great generosity and a big heart.

All of his friends agree he was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who would show motivation. How many chefs, sommeliers, wine people have had his support and kind advice!

He will leave a huge void in our family, the wine world, and among the friendships he built over the years of his career and life.

We hope to live up to continue to pass on what He has built, as humbly as He knew so well, for generations and generations to come.

Trimbach, Grands Vins d'Alsace, Ribeauvillé, Alsace, France

There are so many amazing and emotional comments on Facebook and Instagram. They go straight to our Heart, thank you all, and we are sure Hubert is delighted to see that from where he is. Just a few we love:

« Hubert was a wonderful person & a credit to the wine industry. I had many great times working, traveling & having his great wines with many fine dinners with Hubert. Rest in Peace my old friend. »

« Such a great personality. One of its kind! »

« Le cinéma a ses monstres sacrés, le vin d’Alsace a aussi ses ambassadeurs qui ont su faire rayonner la région sur toute la planète dans la seconde partie du 20e siècle. Hubert Trimbach aura construit et transmis, comme ses pairs. »

« Le prince Hubert comme l'appelait ses confrères, était une personnalité attachante, je me souviens qu'un de mes amis américains lui avait serré la main avec le même effet que si cela avait été le Général De Gaulle... »

Maison Trimbach - wine-searcher

Maison Trimbach is one of the oldest wineries in the French wine region of Alsace. Dating back to 1626, Trimbach is well-known for its Riesling wines. In particular, one made from the small Clos Sainte Hune vineyard, which is considered one of the finest Alsatian expressions of the grape.

Alongside Riesling, Trimbach has a range of classic Alsace varieties within its wine portfolio. These include Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Pinot Noir. The collection covers a range of styles, but dry, ageworthy wines with great minerality are Trimbach's specialty. The house makes a few Vendages Tardives and Selection de Grains Nobles wines, as well as some Eaux-de-Vie in select vintages.

Located in Ribeauville,Trimbach is surrounded by limestone- and fossil-rich vineyards protected by the Vosges Mountains.Trimbach has plots in several grand cru vineyards, including Geisberg and Osterberg.

The most important plot is the walled Clos Sainte Hune vineyard, which lies within the larger Rosacker Grand Cru vineyard of Hunawihr. This plot has been in the family for more than 200 years and produces wine with high minerality and ageability. Even though this wine comes from a grand cru vineyard, it is not labelled as such; Trimbach has shunned the title in favor of the prestigious Clos Sainte Hune name.

The house has been in the Trimbach family for centuries. Frédéric Emile Trimbach received the highest distinction for his wines at the International Wine Fair in Brussels in 1898, this was a pivotal point for the success and notoriety of the brand. In 1920, Frédéric Théodore, his son, moved the family business to Ribeauville to make way for expansion. The house is still located there today under the leadership of the 12th and 13th generations: Hubert Trimbach, his daughter Anne and his nephews Jean and Pierre.

Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.
Following:
"Brettljause" and Wine at Buschenschank Trummer, Weingut Trummer, with Jürgen Trummer - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

we drove a few miles to Weingut Polz, Strass, Südsteiermark. This was a tasting-only visit.
Sommelier Philipp Heidenbauer was our host.

Weingut Polz, Strass, Südsteiermark

The Polz winery was founded by Johann Polz in 1912. Today the 4 th generation is running the estate. Erich jr. takes care of the business side and brother Christoph is responsible for the cellar and vinification.

They farm around 200 acres of vineyards partly in unbelievably steep sites which naturally require manual work. Sustainability has been a focus for more than a decade which led to a conversion of all vineyards to
biological-organic cultivation. Their filet pieces such as the Theresienhöhe, which is characterized by different types of slate, and the Hochgrassnitzberg, which consists of rare shell limestone, give racy, crisp Sauvignon Blancs.

This winery has a special place in my heart. When we lived with the family in Zagreb in the early 90s, Croatia had just come out of a brutal war and some of the goods we and the kids were used to were not available. Hence, we drove to Graz, the closest western city to stock up on items. Before heading home, facing the aspect of being thoroughly checked when crossing two heavily guarded borders, I had to catch my breath for some minutes. We stopped at the Buschenschank at Weingut Polz, had some local cheese and one glass of beautiful Sauvignon Blanc sitting on the bench in front of the house enjoying the tranquility and the stunningly beautiful landscape.

Polz wine estate. Now new since 1912.

It has now been 109 years since our great-grandfather Johann Polz laid the foundation for our winery on Grassnitzberg, since Rilke wrote his Duino Elegies and since the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic. What a year!

Today, we are already the 4th generation of our family dedicated to transferring our idea of excellence into a glass. With our hands. With our soils. With nature.

Since the spring of last year, Erich Polz Jr. has been heading the estate with a crystal-clear vision of guiding all the magnificent potential and valuable know-how inherent to his family's long history and winemaking tradition into a fruitful, robust future. A future for many more generations to come here on the estate. And a delectable future for all lovers of our wines throughout the world.

Erich’s brother Christoph is responsible for the cellar and vinification. Sensitive, calm, with great confidence in every single grape. Because at the Polz wine estate, every single fruit is carefully handpicked as it sets out on the honourable journey to its gratifying destiny. It makes no difference whether we are talking about territory wines typical of the region and variety, full of freshness and liveliness, or about the greatest possible growths of our domain that have aged to perfection. Fact remains: we are passionate about working by hand. And our skills grow directly from our origins in southern Styria, from our terroir.

Sustainability has been a major focus of our work for many years - and in future it will be even more pronounced. This includes gentle grapevine pruning, which we have been practising for more than a decade, the complete avoidance of insecticides and glyphosates, and the conversion of our vineyards to organic farming, which is already being implemented.

In the words of Erich Polz Jr.:  “We have been constantly learning and evolving at the wine estate for 109 years. We work with thriving vines that are planted in healthy soils. We strive for harmony, balance and excellence in our wines with great passion. And we are now also stepping more and more onto paths that have never been travelled before. After all, there is nothing riskier than risking nothing.

Weingut Rudolf May (VDP) in Retzstadt, Franken

The last one, but not least one, in Franken was Weingut Rudolf May. We had established contact with him the wedding of wine journalist Stuart Pigott. it had taken some time until the visit came through.

Rudi May took us to his vineyards, where his son Benjamin may was doing vineyard week on a steep slope. Back at the winery, we visited the winemaking facilities and sat down for a tasting.

Weingut Rudolf May (VDP) in Retzstadt, Franken

Rudolph May cultivates 40 acres of vineyards in the Eberstal, a small side valley of the Main river north of Würzburg.

This is a very young wine estate by German standards: It was only in 1998 that the estate was established from a small, part-time wine grower operation.

60% is planted with Silvaner on barren shell-limestone soils – a very different geological basis than the Iphofen and Rödelsee vineyards. The May family also makes a fantastic Pinot Noir.

Vineyard work is done without machines, and in harmony with nature. Since 2016 the vineyards have been certified organic by Naturland. Rudolph May says about his wines: “We are enthusiastic about the Silvaner, which can develop its character in a unique way in Franken. Barren and skeletal soils make our wines very dry and rich in finesse. That's when you discover their origin and not a lush bouquet of fruit. We work according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. We stay away from anything that could be called manipulative. With 100% grape quality, we can afford to leave the must in the cellar to controlled idleness. Because we want to taste what nature has created.”

About the Producer - Howard.Ripley.com

Rudolf May founded his estate in 1998 with two hectares, and through hard work and focus on quality has grown it to sixteen and a half. His main interest has always been Silvaner, and he is one of only a few growers to demonstrate that this often-overlooked varietal can produce distinctive wines with ageing potential. May’s Silvaners are the finest in Germany, his poor, fossil-rich soils enabling him to make very fine, pure, mineral-driven wines. He believes in minimal intervention, and in 2016 he and his son Benedikt (who apprenticed at Mosbacher), adopted organic methods. They are already noticing that the vines are now more resilient and balanced –needing, for example, to use far less sulphur to stabilise them.

In 2020, they sold off over two hectares of lesser vineyards and purchased one and a half hectares in the Benediktusberg, a 1. Lage (1er cru) site which may soon win recognition as a GG.

Silvaner has a mixed reputation in the UK, deemed a poor second to Riesling, but this is changing, and demand for May wines increasing rapidly, no doubt helped by the fact that Silvaner is a perfect reflector of terroir, particularly adept at showcasing Franken’s shell-limestone soils. We tasted Silvaner GGs the length and breadth of Franken this year: the finest, most balanced, energy-laden and long were made by Rudolf May.

This is an estate firmly established in the top rank.

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting (from Barrel and from Bottle) at Weingut Rudolf Fürst, Franken, with Sebastian Fürst - Germany-East Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Art, Culture, History - Berlin, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg, Franken

“Rudolf Fürst is an acknowledged Pinot magician in Germany, not just with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) but also the earlier-ripening Frühburgunder.”  Jancis Robinson MW, The Financial Times,13th November 2011.

“18 ha estate in Bürgstadt where some of the best Franconian wines are produce, especially the burgundy style Spätburgunders (rightly regarded as the finest in Germany).” Hugh Johnson, Wineguide 2012

Although Germany is closely identified with Riesling, the country is the third-largest producer of Pinot Noir in the world, behind France (Bourgogne) and the United States (Oregon).

The German name for the grape is Spätburgunder - late (spät) ripening pinot (burgunder). It was brought to Germany from Burgundy.

In the past 50 years, Pinot Noir in Germany has increased dramatically, both in terms of quantity and quality. That is the reason why people are talking about the German Pinot Noir miracle and are considering German Pinot Noir as the first alternative to wines from Burgundy.

In an excellent article in the Fallstaff International with the title "The German Pinot Noir Miracle". Ulrich Sauter, who is based in Germany, explains the German Pinot Noir miracle. It is a very well written article about what happened in Germany in terms of Pinot Noir in the past 50 years.

Highly recommended. Go here: "The German Pinot Noir Miracle"

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023. The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

Following:

Bus Tour Through the Vineyards of Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, with Melissa Rion and Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine Rion, Vosne-Romanée- From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

we drove further north for a wine-pairing lunch at Domaine Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits

Domaine Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits

The Trapet family has deep roots in Burgundy and have lived in Gevrey-Chambertin for six generations. They hold 36 acres of excellent plots in well-known Grand and 1ier cru locations. Since Jean-Louis Trapet took over the domain from his father Jean in 1992, wines have been produced here that can rank among the best in Burgundy. Yields have been drastically reduced - almost in half -, winemaking has been completely converted to biodynamic principles and fining and filtration has been stopped entirely. This is how extraordinarily good and very storable wines are created.

The wines are examples of purity, finesse and balance. Trapet is owner of over 7 1⁄2 acres in the Grand Cru vineyards Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin and Latricières-Chambertin and almost 5 acres in the Premier Cru vineyards Petite-Chapelle and Clos Prieur.

We will enjoy a three course meal that is accompanied by 5 wines, going up the quality ladder from a simple Bourgogne red, village, 1er cru, and Grand Cru.

Domaine Louis Trapet -  Berry Bros. & Rudd

Domaine Louis Trapet in Burgundy was actually established by Louis's son Arthur, back in 1870, when he began acquiring vineyards and laying the foundations for the present Domaine. The Trapets now have 12 hectares of vines including 1.9 hectares of the hallowed Chambertin.

The Domaine is currently run by Jean-Louis Trapet, son of Jean and cousin of the Rossignol Trapets. He is married to an Alsacienne, Andrée, and together they maintain links with and make wine from Alsace, though production remains firmly centered on Gevrey-Chambertin. Jean-Louis moved towards biodynamic farming in the mid 1990s, working first with guru Francois Bouchet and now with Pierre Masson. The domaine has been certified by Biodivin since 1998 and Demeter from 2005.

Jean-Louis would rather talk about the philosophy of wine than the detail of winemaking, but the broad brush outline is partial destemming, a cool pre-fermentation maceration before a long fermentation, then the descent by gravity of the wine to the barrel cellar, with 30 to 75% new oak used according to the cuvée. He uses no sulphur at harvest or during the vinification and maturation processes, just adding a small dose at bottling.

The wines are succulent and rounded and make an interesting contrast to the tighter, more precise style of Jean-Louis’s cousins at Domaine Rossignol-Trapet. These are wines that tend more towards elegance and finesse rather than power and extract - the exception being Le Chambertin which displays concentrated fruit and great intensity.

Wine: Germany’s Kaleidoscopic Diversity (GG, Chardonnay, TBA, Spätburgunder) - Stuart Pigott/ James Suckling (August 2023)

Picture: Stuart Pigott, Wilhelm Weil (Weingut Robert Weil) and Gesine Roll (Weingut Weedenborn) with Annette and Christian Schiller (ombiasy WineTours) at Gut Hermannsberg in the Nahe Region.

A few weeks ago, under the heading "Germany's Kaleidoscopic Diversity", Stuart Pigott issued a most interersting article about German wine.

In his article, which I am re-releasing below, Stuart refers to 4 German ultra-premium wines.

First, a Weingut Wittmann Riesling GG, a world-class, bone dry Riesling from Rheinhessen.

Second, a Weingut Weedenborn Chardonnay, also from Rheinhessen, an ultra-premium wine that wine experts not necessarily would associate with Germany.

Third, a Weingut Robert Weil Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the Rheingau, a classic mainsstream world-class German wine.

Fourth, a Weingut Thoerle Spätburgunder, again from Rheinhessen, an example of a wine why people are talking about the German Pinot Noir miracle and are considering German Pinot Noir as the first alternative to wines from Burgundy. See here: Highly Recommended Read: The German Pinot Noir Miracle (Fallstaff International, August 18, 2023)

Annette Schiller and I have visited all 4 producers on recent wine tours by ombiasy. I am adding pictures from these visits.

Germany’s Kaleidoscopic Diversity - Stuart Pigott/ James Suckling (August 2023)

This is a very busy time of year for Senior Editor Stuart Pigott because a swath of single-vineyard dry whites of the new vintage are released each year on Sept. 1, and our policy in most places is to try and taste bottled wines immediately before release so that you don’t miss out on exciting new wines simply because of late reporting.

This meant that Stuart spent the past week zig-zagging across the wine regions of the Rhine Valley and its tributaries tasting mostly 2022s and some late-released 2021s and 2020s. These were mostly rieslings (Germany’s most widely planted grape with just shy of 25 percent of all vineyards), but pinot blanc, pinot gris and chardonnay are also important white grapes for Germany now. In certain places, spatburgunder, or pinot noir, reds have also become very important.

To this complexity must be added the dramatic diversity of terroirs, and this week everything from volcanic porphyry to limestone and slate were represented. The result is a kaleidoscopic diversity way beyond what most consumers associate with Germany. For us, what makes Germany really fascinating is the dynamism of the leading producers. Many of the most sought-after dry wines come from terroirs that were forgotten or unknown just a generation ago.

Of course, the most important moments are when a row of extraordinary wines stand in front of us on the tasting table, as was the case when Stuart tasted at Weingut Wittmann in the Rheinhessen. The wines were the dry rieslings from the 2022 vintage, most important the single-vineyard  GGs – Germany’s equivalent of grand cru.

It was no surprise that the most amazing of these was the Wittmann Riesling Rheinhessen Morstein GG 2022, but the almost supernatural freshness of the wine after the mostly hot and dry 2022 growing season was a revelation. For us it is one of the dry rieslings of the vintage in Germany. How did winemaker Philipp Wittmann achieve that?

“When we were processing the grapes I did everything possible to achieve purity and precision,“ Wittmann said. “We did a lot of whole-cluster pressing, like they do for Champagne, which isn’t normal for us. I think it worked really well.“

He also explained how the drought and the need to remove grapes from young vines and mature ones negatively affected by it had reduced quantities, but they are large enough that we didn’t need to use the words “limited production” for any of the Wittmann wines.

Wittmann was not the only one to move in this radical direction in 2022. Gut Hermannsberg, in Germany’s Nahe region, did the same, and there’s already a controversy raging on the German wine scene about whether they went too far in the razor-sharp direction. You may find they remind you of Australian dry rieslings, due to a flavor profile far removed from traditional German stylesSee Stuart’s tasting notes below for our opinion on the matter.

The strange thing about this discussion is that in the United States, some sommeliers have clearly decided that 2022 is not an interesting vintage for German wines because the vintage is too low in acidity. The truth is that the stylistic diversity of the 2022 dry wines is huge, and sweeping judgments like “2021 is better than 2022“ dumb the whole thing down in a manner we reject as oversimplification.

Tour and Tasting at Weingut Wittmann in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, with Philipp Wittmann - Germany-South and Alsace 2017 Tour by ombiasy WineTours

One of the week’s most exciting wines was a late release, the Weedenborn Rheinhessen Grand Réserve Trocken 2020. This cuvee of 60 percent sauvignon blanc and 40 percent chardonnay melds these two grapes to a seamless whole that doesn’t taste directly of either or very much of the oak casks that the wine was matured in on the lees for 30 months. The concentration and textural complexity are also stunning.

“Right from the beginning this tasted special,“ winemaker Gesine Roll said. “There was never any doubt in my mind that it’s the best vintage so far.“

Not only is it the best Grand Reserve since its launch with the 2017 vintage, it’s also a great innovation. Who even imagines there could be a leading German producer whose main grape variety is sauvignon blanc? Here is the New Germany!

2022 was not an easy vintage for the nobly sweet rieslings for which Germany is famous, because the wet fall encouraged the development of botrytis, but not the shriveling of the affected grapes that’s necessary to achieve the concentration.

“You had to wait a long time and the quantities were small, but in the end it was possible and the results were really good,” explained Wilhelm Weil of the Robert Weil winery in the Rheingau, who has a major reputation for this special category of German wines.

Cellar Tour and Tasting in the Courtyard with Owner/ Winemaker Gesine Roll at Weingut Weedenborn in Monzenheim, Rheinhessen - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

The results of his patience and some extreme selection work are spectacular and also have the special brilliance talked about above. The most amazing among them, but also the most expensive and hard to find, was the Robert Weil Riesling Rheingau Kiedrich Gräfenberg Trockenbeerenauslese 2022. Tasting this feels like staring into a deep abyss of exotic dried fruits and spices. The acidity tastes vibrant enough to wake the dead!

Cellar Tour and Tasting at Weingut Robert Weil in Kiedrich, Rheingau, with Jan Christensen - Germany-North Tour 2019 by ombiasy WineTours: Quintessential Riesling

The new vintage for German spatburgunder is 2021, and like in Burgundy it was a challenging growing season followed by a rather wet fall. Christoph and Johannes Thorle in little-known Saulheim may not (yet) be international stars but have built an excellent reputation among insiders for Burgundy-inspired pinots. Their 2021s are a remarkable group of wines in the context of the vintage globally. The Thörle Spätburgunder Rheinhessen Hölle 2021 has extremely polished tannins and a sensational interplay of savory and earthy character with delicate fruit. Prices for these wines are friendly compared with Burgundy of similar quality.

"I am possibly repeating myself in saying that Armin Tement (supported by brother Stefan and his wife Monika as well as his parents Manfred and Heidi) has made Weingut Tement Austria’s number one wine producer. Although it has been one of the country’s finest wine addresses already during the 1990s and 2000s by Armin’s father Manfred, the son has pushed the limits even farther. In terms of size, sophisticated winemaking and the immense range of high-quality wines, I don’t see anybody else producing wine on this level in Austria...”

Weingut Polz - Tasting at Weingut Polz, Strass, Südsteiermark, with Sommelier Philipp Heidenbauer - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

on the day before, we went - on our way to Graz for a Gustav Mahler concert a the Graz Opera House and eventually to Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental - to Weingut Tement, Ehrenhausen, Südsteiermark.
Sommelier Andy Bodor was our host. He showed us the winemaking facilities and conducted a most impressive tasting of Tement wines.
We also met Manfred and Heidi Tement.
Weingut Tement is represented in the USA by Bowler Wines.

Our drive to the Tement winery took us along the south Styria wine trail. The narrow road straddles along the Austrian - Slovenian border. The houses on one side of the road are Slovenian, the houses on the other side are Austrian. We drove through a very beautiful landscape.

Weingut Tement, Ehrenhausen, Südsteiermark

‘Making wine means understanding how to deal with nature and its peculiarities. In all modesty.’ That is the credo of the Tement family. Even during his lifetime, Manfred Tement has become a legend of the Austrian wine scene. His Sauvignon Blanc Zieregg is one of the hundred cult wines in the world. But the beginnings were very difficult.

The winery was founded by Manfred Tement’s father in 1959 with just 5 acres. The money came from a “Buschenschank”. When Manfred was 16, his father suddenly died but he absolutely wanted to continue the winery, studied enology at Klosterneuburg and helped his mother over the weekend to make ends meet.

The breakthrough came in 1991. The Tement winery was finally able to support itself financially through the sale of wine, since Manfred Tement had continuously acquired additional vineyards over the years. Finally the Buschenschank was no longer financially necessary.

The almost even greater success in 1991 came from a different angle: the German important food and wine magazine "Der Feinschmecker" chose a Sauvignon Blanc from the Tement winery as the "best Sauvignon Blanc in the world" during a panel tasting. A phenomenal praise for a wine from a then fairly unknown region and that put winery Tement and the Sauvignon Blanc of the Südsteiermark on the map.

Manfred Tement not only gradually expanded his winery, he also increasingly focused on extraordinary quality. And that meant: the smallest yields, extremely strict selection and meticulously gentle vinification.

Today the winery farms 250 acres and the third generation, brothers Armin and Stefan, work hand in hand with father Manfred.

With Slovenia's accession to the EU, the winery’s top vineyard Zieregg could also be planted with new vines on the Slovenian side. The microclimatic conditions of the Ciringa (Slovenian for Zieregg) site are ideal for long-lived, elegant, mineral Sauvignon Blancs.

Both wineries, the Tement wine estate in Austria and the Domaine Ciringa in Slovenia, are certified organic, and in the process of converting to biodynamic principles which should be finalized in 2023.

Weingut Tement - Bowler

Armin Tement happily joined his family winery in Sudsteiermark (South Styria) in 2005. His father, Manfred Tement, had over time, firmly established Weingut Tement as a benchmark producer for Styrian Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon. Manfred was one of the founders of STK (Styrian Terroir and Klassik Wine growers association) in 1986. STK was established because there were no government regulations established at the time for making fine wine in the region. Manfred preferred Sauvignon Blanc to the most widely planted and highly productive Welschriesling. It was a big step to prioritize quality over quantity and eventually in 1991, Tement was recognized by the German magazine, Der Feinschmecker, for making the ‘world’s best Sauvignon Blanc’, essentially putting Tement and this small winegrowing region on the international wine map.

When Armin joined in 2005, his goal was not only to make an unequivocal Styrian wine, but also a wine that expresses, in his words, ‘Tement’s own style”. With the support of the family, Armin began following organic agriculture, eventually converting all eighty hectares over the next ten years and becoming certified organic in the 2018 vintage. South Styria gets a lot of rain and incredibly, Armin, Stefan, and Manfred have converted all of their sites to biodynamic agriculture, 2022 is the first vintage certified biodynamic by both Demeter and Respekt. There are three main weather influences that are a part of the terroir here: the Adriatic Sea to the south brings storms and rain, the Pannonian Plain brings hot and dry weather, and the Alps bring cool air at night.

Styria is one of the three major growing regions in Austria and it’s the smallest with 4,633 hectares planted. The subregion of Sudsteiermark, or South Styria, covers 2,563 hectares and it lies on the border with Slovenia. Styria is quite different from the rest of Austria as the main white varietal is neither Grüner nor Riesling, but Sauvignon Blanc! Other white varieties also do well here, notably Gelber Muskateller, Pinot Blanc, and Morillon, the local name for Chardonnay. In Sudsteiermark, the wines are categorized by quality level, with regional wines at the entry level, village wines are a step up in quality and represent the terroir of the village, and the single vineyard wines are the pinnacle. All of the wines are labeled “Sudsteiermark DAC”. Tement makes wines from three villages, Ehrenhausen, Gamlitz, and Kitzeck-Sausal. And the highest quality wines are single vineyard sites which are designated either Erste Lagen or Grosse Lagen, the equivalent of premier cru or grand cru. The most famous site in Sudsteiermark is Zieregg where both Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon are planted.

Tement is specialized in making exceptional single-vineyard wines, but the flagship is the regional Sudsteiermark Sauvignon Blanc “Kalk & Kreide”. It is a blend from fifty sites and the name describes the main terroir, limestone and clay. Like all of their wines, the grapes are harvested by hand, undergo a maceration of twelve to twenty-four hours and then fermentation happens spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. “Kalk & Kreide” is aged on the lees for six months before release. All of the wines are spontaneously fermented and are made without any sulfur during vinification or aging. They only get a little sulfur one month before bottling, allowing the wines to get a full expression of their site. The single-vineyard wines are fermented and aged in large neutral oak barrels for eighteen to twenty-four months and are bottled without filtration. Some wines do not get sulfur for more than 24 months, and yet the single-vineyard wines are incredibly precise and express their terroir brilliantly.

Over the last fifteen years, the gradual changes taking place have garnered a lot of attention, but it’s worth noting that the whole family is involved. Armin works with his brother, Stefan, who joined him in 2010. His father is still working as well, although Armin officially took the reins in 2008. Armin’s wife, Monika is also involved in keeping everything running smoothly. And Armin’s mother runs the recently established B and B. All that Weingut Tement has accomplished in the last fifty years is incredibly impressive and it's made it not only one of the most important wineries in South Styria, but also in Austria. Tement has become an icon in South Styria and Austria and the accolades are well deserved. Bowler is incredibly honored to represent the Tement wines in the United States.

Michelin Adds 10 Restaurants to its Forthcoming Washington DC Guide, October 2023

Michelin just announced that it has added 10 restaurants to its forthcoming Michelin Guide Washington DC. It did not say if any of these additions will be awarded one or more stars, a Bib Gourmand, which honors high-end, more affordable restaurants, or will be just included in the guide without any special award. Still, being included in the Michelin Guide is already a huge success.

Michelin Adds 10 Restaurants to its Forthcoming Washington DC Guide

Beloved BBQ at Love, Makoto

Capital Crossing

“This Japanese steakhouse is undeniably striking with dark walls, a neon hallway and large tables with central circular grills. Chef Makoto Okuwa and an Executive Chef/butcher Takeshi Omae focus on the Japanese style of barbecue instead of the more familiar Korean.”

Chang Chang

Dupont Circle

“Pork soup dumplings are comfort in a bowl, but here they’re precise with superb broth and tender meat. Even something as simple as snow pea shoots with garlic is crafted with care.”

Dear Sushi at Love, Makoto

Capital Crossing

“This is omakase minus the sticker shock, but the price point isn’t the only thing that delights diners. Opening snacks, handrolls, nigiri prepared in traditional and new ways—it’s all here and it’s all delectable.”

Grazie Nonna

Dupont Circle

“Chef Gerald Addison and Casey Patten are behind this spot that’s long on nostalgia and short on shortcuts. This is hearty food that uses quality ingredients while channeling the memories of Mr. Patten’s nonna’s cooking.”

Kappo

Palisades

“An eight course Kappo-style tasting menu with a focus on Wagyu woven with seafood is the main event…Go ahead and add caviar and uni if you’re feeling flush, but you won’t need them to feel well taken care of here.”

Little Vietnam

Petworth

“From cumin lamb dumplings lashed in chili oil to duck fat rice to an off-menu chicken Caesar rice wrap stuffed with chicken skin, the tightly curated menu is as tasteful as it is inspired.”

Petite Cerise

Shaw

“French bistro dining practically mandates dessert; a single profiterole with a delicious chocolate ganache sauce fits the bill.”

Rania

Penn Quarter

“This fine dining concept seems fit for a queen, and good thing too, since Rania translates to ‘queen’ in Hindi and Sanskrit. Chef Chetan Shetty, formerly of Indian Accent in New York, delivers something entirely new here.”

The Saga

West End

“This restaurant is minimalist to the max with a cream and beige palette, glass walls and light wood. Stylish all the same, they’re saving the drama for the food, which is a blend of Spanish classics with updated, Latin American-influenced twists.”

Yellow

Georgetown

“It’s always humming here, where long lines form for pastries, breakfast sandwiches or shakshuka in the morning and pita sandwiches, spreads and sides…Just try not finishing the batata tots.”

Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours took place from Monday, June 19, 2023 to Thursday, June 29, 2023.

In Württemberg, the last of the 4 regions we went to, we visited:

Weingut Fürst Hohenlohe-Öhringen (VDP) in Öhringen-Verrenberg, Württemberg, with the New Managing Director Carl-Julius Cromme

Weingut Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein (VDP) in Beilstein, Württemberg

Weingut Beurer (VDP) in Kernen, Württemberg, with Jochen Beurer

Weingut Schnaitmann (VDP) in Fellbach, Württemberg, with Rainer Schnaitmann

Weingut Lassak in Hessigheim, Würrtemberg, with Stefanie and Fabian Lassak

Weingut Graf Neipperg (VDP) in Schwaigern, Württemberg

Weingut Dautel (VDP) in Bönnigheim, Württemberg, with Ernst and Christian Dautel

At Weingut Fürst Hohenlohe-Öhringen we were received by the New Managing Director, Carl-Julius Cromme, with a glass of Sekt. We toured the cellar and sat down for a tasting of the wines of Weingut Fürst Hohenlohe-Öhringen. Before leaving, we took a short walk to the vineyards.

Carl-Julius Cromme took over as MD of Weingut Fürst Hohenlohe-Öhringen just a few weeks before our visit. He graduated with an Master (Weinwirtschaft) from the University of Giessen in 2018. Until 2021, he was the MD of Weingut Steintal (VDP) in Franken and then worked at Weingut Korell (Nahe).

Weingut Fürst Hohenlohe-Öhringen (VDP) in Öhringen-Verrenberg, Württemberg

As Germany’s oldest family-owned winery, the Hohenlohe-Öhringen family can look back to the year 1253 as the founding year of their viticulture history. The 27th generation is now at the helm and today they manage 42 acres of the solely owned site Verrenberger Verrenberg.

The vineyard is planted with the traditional Württemberg varietals Lemberger and Riesling, and also with Spätburgunder, some Weissburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Franc. Since 2008 the vineyards have been cultivated according to organic guidelines.

The goal is to produce distinctive wines that not only express varietal character, but also that of their origin. Their 2013 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards.

This estate was the pioneer in creating cuvées in Württemberg. More than 20 years ago Siegfried Röll, their winemaker in those days, toured Bordeaux and on the long drive back home he began wondering why they did not produce a Bordeaux type blend at home. He blended the local variety Lemberger with traditional Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and voilà - this cuvée came out beautifully. This was in 1986. They named the cuvée "Ex Flammis Orior" after the inscription on the family coat
of arms.

The German wine magazine “Fine” held a wide-ranging tasting with 100 ultra-premium dry Rieslings from the current 2021 vintage recently. This was a blind-tasting with a jury made up of industry professionals, wine collectors and journalists.

The top-ten wines come from the Mosel (4), Rheinhessen (2), Rheingau (2), Franken (1) and Pfalz (1).

This posting is based on an article in the Neue Züricher Zeitung: Die zehn besten Rieslinge 2021 aus Deutschland

We have visited 6 of the producers on a Germany tour by ombiasy WineTours.

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting (from Barrel and from Bottle) at Weingut Rudolf Fürst, Franken, with Sebastian Fürst - Germany-East Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Art, Culture, History - Berlin, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg, Franken

Nieder-Flörsheimer Frauenberg Riesling GG 2021, Arno Göhring, Rheinhessen

Eine wilde Aromenmischung: tropische Früchte, Holznoten, Eisenkraut und Fenchel. Tiefgründig und vielschichtig, cremige Anmutung. Sehr hohes Niveau. Kein Schweizer Importeur.

Forster Ungeheuer Riesling GG 2021, Weingut Georg Mosbacher, Pfalz

Vibrierende Aromen gelber Früchte, Trockenkräuter, Fülle und Dichte des Rieslings vom Buntsandstein, straffe, eingebundene Säure, cremig, schlank, neue Klassik von der Mittelhardt in der Pfalz.

Scharzhofberger Riesling GG 2021, Vereinigte Hospitien, Mosel

Der Wein hat alles: konzentrierte limonen- und holunderbetonte Früchte, fokussierte Säure, schöne Textur, etwas Salzigkeit, Substanz, pure, harmonische Art.

Schlossberg Riesling GG 2021, Schloss Vollrads, Rheingau

Picture: Schloss Vollrads in the Rheingau: Tour and Tasting - Germany-North Tour 2017 by ombiasy WineTours

Scharzhofberger Riesling GG 2021, Weingut Van Volxem, Mosel

Hintergründiger Gigant von der Saar. Saftige Früchte, aber auch dunkle Noten, grosser aromatischer Reichtum im Gaumen, fast buttrige Crèmigkeit, feine Säure.

Picture: With Roman Niewodniczanski at Weingut Van Volxem. See. Lunch, Tasting and Vineyard Walk at Weingut Van Volxem with Owner Roman Niewodniczanski – Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015)

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG 2021, Weingut Wegeler, Mosel

Quintessenz eines grossen trockenen Rieslings. Dezente Reduktionsnoten, Pfirsich, Wiesenkräuter, vielschichtige, gut strukturierte Fruchtdichte im Gaumen, feine Salzigkeit, ausgezeichnete Länge, strahlender Wein von enormer Frische.

Pictures: Cellar Visit and Tasting at Weingut Wegeler in Oestrich-Winkel, Rheingau - Germany-North Tour 2019 by ombiasy WineTours: Quintessential Riesling

Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling GG 2021, Weingut Weil, Rheingau

Klassiker aus dem Rheingau, Bouquet von reifen, exotischen Früchten, leicht reduktiv, im Gaumen intensiv, sehr klar, komplex, ausbalanciert, schöne Säure, belebende Spannung.

Pictures: Cellar Tour and Tasting at Weingut Robert Weil in Kiedrich, Rheingau, with Jan Christensen - Germany-North Tour 2019 by ombiasy WineTours: Quintessential Riesling

Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling GG 2021, Weingut St. Urbanshof, Nik Weis, Mosel

Picture: Tasting at Weingut St. Urbans-Hof in Leiwen, Mosel, with Nik Weis– Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015)

Dittelsheimer Kloppberg Riesling GG 2021, Weingut Winter, Rheinhessen

Ein «New World Riesling», Aromatik von Kräutern, Pfirsich und Haselnüssen, harmonisches und komplexes Mundgefühl. Terroir-Wein oder ein Riesling geprägt durch den Kellermeister?

Wine-pairing Lunch at Domaine Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits - From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

we went back to Beaune for a tour of the ancient cellars and and tasting at Maison Joseph Drouhin.

The most ancient vaulted cellars of Beaune belong to Drouhin. We visited the historic cellars of about 2.5 acres under the center of Beaune. These cellars once belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and later to the Kings of France. You walk on history much older than the Kingdom of France, since already the Romans built wine cellars in Beaune and we saw bricks, paths and walls nearly 2000 years old.

The tour ended with a tasting of 6 wines.

Maison Joseph Drouhin

Originally from the Yonne department, Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company which bears his name in 1880. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards including the famous Beaune Clos des Mouches. Maurice Drouhin was a significant personality in Beaune, sitting on the INAO committee and acting as Deputy Administrator of the Hospices de Beaune, including during the troubled period of World War II.

His successor was his nephew and adopted heir Robert Jeausset-Drouhin who took charge in 1957.

Today, the fourth generation is at the helm. Robert Jeausset-Drouhin Drouhin now retains a surveillance role while his children Frédéric (managing director), Laurent (export markets), Philippe (vineyards) and Véronique (oenology and Domaine Drouhin Oregon) run the business.

With its 73 hectares, the Joseph Drouhin Domaine is one of the largest estates in the region. It owns vineyards all over Burgundy: Chablis (38 hectares), Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, (32 hectares), Côte Chalonnaise (3 hectares). It is comprised of a majority of Premier and Grand Crus. With close to 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating array of Burgundy terroirs.

Twenty years after Philippe Drouhin first began introducing organic practices, Maison Joseph Drouhin was awarded organic certification for all vineyards it owns, beginning with the 2009 vintage.

Long-time oenologist Laurence Jobard, engaged by Robert Drouhin in 1973, retired after the 2005 vintage and was replaced by Jérome Faure-Brac, a trained oenologist previously with Bichot, while Véronique Drouhin remains on hand to provide continuity of style.

A balance of tradition and modern techniques characterizes Maison Joseph Drouhin’s winemaking and vineyard management: on site nursery, plowing, leaf removal, 100% hand harvesting, open fermenters, fermenting and aging in oak.

The red wines are pre-macerated at 13-15º Celsius, with a very light punching down at the start followed by alternating punching down and pumping over, depending also on the needs of the vintage. The aim is to privilege the fruit in the wine, and to this end bottling is earlier than for most producers.

Joseph Drouhin - wine-searcher.com

Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers. Founded in Beaune in 1880, the domaine has expanded throughout the 20th Century to include vineyards in Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise, making everything from simple, village-level cuvées to highly priced grand cru and premier cru wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The domaine was started by the eponymous Drouhin, who established the company's headquarters in the city of Beaune in the late 19th Century. His son, Maurice, began to acquire vineyards in the early 20th Century, starting with the now-iconic Clos des Mouches vineyard. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Joseph Drouhin began to expand its land holdings in Chablis and, in 1988, the domaine established a vineyard in Oregon, in the United States.

Domaine Joseph Drouhin makes several grand cru wines in the Côte d'Or and in Chablis, including ones from Musigny, Corton-Charlemagne and Les Clos, as well as the Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet Grand Cru. It also has land in some of the Côte d'Or's most famous premier cru vineyards, including Chambolle-Musigny's Les Amoureuses vineyard and in Beaune's Clos des Mouches.

Joseph Drouhin makes a range of village-level and regional wines. Grapes for these are sourced from growers in the area, as well as from the domaine's own vineyards.

Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl recently pointed to three revolutions in terms of German wine: "People forget the doldrums of German wine, especially from about 1985 to 1995. If you were cool in Germany then, you didn’t drink German wine. But it has changed this century. It happened with dry Riesling first, then Pinot’, she said, adding about German sparkling wine, ‘and now it’s finally happening with Sekt."

First, dry Riesling, then Pinot Noir and now Sekt.

Recently, a jury of 5 Sekt-experts tasted the best German sparkling wines at the China Club in Berlin. The jury consisted of: Yvonne Heistermann (Präsidentin Sommelier Union Deutschland), Oliver Lausberg (CHINA CLUB BERLIN), Ben Weidenberg (GRACE), Anton Stefanov (Take Time for Wine) and Nikolas Rechenberg (Herausgeber GOURMETWELTEN). This was a blind tasting using the 100-point scale.

We have visited many of the listed Sekt producers on a recent Germany tour by ombiasy WineTours.

The Hungries in Frankfurt, "Germany's most Underrated Foodie City" (Dirk Eisel), Germany , 2023

Picture: Frankfurt at Night

I could only watch it from a distance: On the weekend of October 6 - 8, 2023, Dirk Eisel took a group of "Hungries" on a most exciting food and wine tour in Frankfurt downtown and the greater Frankfurt area. Knowing Dirk quite well, I was not at all suprised by his choices - all excellent, if not world-class.

I have added a few pictures of the restaurants and wineries were Dirk took the group from my blog Schiller-Wine, with links to my postings.

The Hungries

What are the Hungries?

The Hungries: Our community of international food lovers is made up of hundreds of members, based all over the world – in Scandinavia, Europe, North America, and even in Asia. Chat with us daily on our online forum, ask for travel tips and recommendations, and hear industry rumors and restaurant news before anyone else. VIP members also have access to discounts and perks from restaurant, shop & hotel partners, and get first access to all events we host.

Join The Hungries and meet people who are as food-obsessed as you are. No matter where you’re traveling, you’ll always have a local to give you the best recommendations in town, and maybe even meet you for a meal!

The Hungries in Frankfurt

The Hungries on X-Twitter: We have a tradition in The Hungries of naming the first member in a city our “mayor” – especially if the person is very active and acts as an ambassador for their city. Few mayors can live up to the enthusiasm of @dirkeisel, our passionate Frankfurt commander. Recently, he had a bunch of Hungries in town visiting him, and he arranged the most amazing food & winery tour for them! In Dirk’s own words:

Ever since I joined The Hungries, I have been lobbying for people to come to my hometown of Frankfurt. […] Last weekend, a fearless group comprising @sabrinavidal_, @svein_mathisen, @nghial, @vsgarberg, @norusuku, and @_henrikdam kindly trusted me and arrived for a tour of Germany’s most underrated foodie city.

The stops included:
- dinner at @bidlabu_ffm, Frankfurt’s latest one-Michelin-starred restaurant which offers rather classical, but enjoyable bistronomy cuisine and wines
- lunch at @ramen_muku_frankfurt, which not only serves the eponymous soup, but also a broad selection of “Japanese tapas”
- sausages at legendary 83-year old Ilse Schreiber’s market stall in @kleinmarkthalle_frankfurt food market
- natural wines at @coolclimate wine store just around the corner from Kleinmarkthalle
- dinner at @emmametzler_restaurant where chef @anton_de_bruyn serves modern nose-to-tail dishes from locally-sourced produce.
- lunch at the newly-opened, excellent @ciccione.pizza, which serves Roman-style pizza al taglio and also has a nice wine list
- winery visit at @kaischaetzel in Nierstein, in the midst of harvest.
- dinner at @restaurant_gustav, one of two restaurants in Frankfurt that have been awarded two Michelin stars
- winery visit at @oekonomieratrebholz, one of the best wineries in Germany
- lunch at the @weingutbernhardkoch winery Wine Pavillon
- winery visit at Rings winery where brothers Steffen and Andy Rings have turned their parents’ fruit farm which sold wine in bulk into one of Germany’s finest producers of Riesling and Pinot Noir
- dinner at Dirk’s culinary living room in Frankfurt, @chairsffm.

Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours took place from Monday, June 19, 2023 to Thursday, June 29, 2023.

The focus of the visit of Weingut Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein was on the vineyard. There, we also met Eberhard Dippon doing vineyard work. Following the vineyard walk we sat down for a tasting.

Weingut Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein (VDP) in Beilstein, Württemberg

Winery Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein, surrounded by steep, terraced vineyards, is beautifully situated in the idyllic Bottwartal with a fantastic view of the castle hill of Hohenbeilstein. In 1959 the winery was acquired by Eberhard Dippon, who began organic farming in 1987. In 1991 son Hartmann Dippon took over after a viticultural training in Franken, working experiences in France, New Zealand, California, and passing the exam for wine technician at the viticultural school in Weinsberg.

The vineyards cover 35 acres of vineyards, mainly in the solely-owned site Schlosswengert. Since 1994, the winery has been completely converted to organic viticulture. In 2002, the estate was the only winery in Württemberg to be appointed a demonstration farm as role model for organic farming.

Special attention is paid to the red wine variety Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), which is matured in barriques, and Riesling. They also started working with Piwis (= fungus-resistant grape variety). The white grape variety Cabernet Blanc is undoubtedly one of the most successful new breeds of the Piwis. As a fungus-tolerant variety of the new generation, the Swiss vine breeder Valentin Blattner succeeded in crossing Cabernet Sauvignon and resistance partners. Cabernet Blanc found a"second father" in Volker Freytag, who selected the variety in the Palatinate and, after a few years of experimental expansion, registered it for variety protection in 1994 and for classification in 2010. With its very good cultivation properties, high resistance to fungi and, last but not least, the catchy name of the variety, Cabernet Blanc helped the Piwis to achieve a recognized and promising status alongside the classic grape varieties in the minds of  winegrowers and consumers. Cabernet Blanc has shown the strongest growth among the Piwi grape varieties in Germany in recent years.

“NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE MADE NEW, BUT MANY THINGS CAN BE RETHOUGHT.”

JUNIOR AND WINEMAKER JOSCHA DIPPON SPEAKS ABOUT HIS WINES AND WINE ESTATE.

VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Joscha Dippon: The special thing about our organic wine estate is definitely the monopole vineyard SCHLOSSWENGERT on Hohenbeilstein. This is where our VDP.GROSSE GEWÄCHS® wines are produced. The SCHLOSSWENGERT consists of approximately six hectares of vineyard on the castle’s own mountain. The wine estate comprises a total of around 16 hectares. Healthy grapes grow on these partially terraced slopes, which are vinified into fine wines. Our superb quality is confirmed each year through numerous awards and prizes.

The history of the winery goes back to the beginnings of the 20th century with the founder, Robert Vollmöller. Since my grandfather Eberhard Dippon acquired the winery in 1959, it has been family-owned. My parents, my wife Silke and I currently work at the winery. We are indeed a real family business, especially when it comes to our events at the wine estate. Our siblings and their families as well as friends and acquaintances help out. The fantastic view from our park over the Bottwartal to Stuttgart is also very special.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Joscha Dippon: My father, Hartmann Dippon, had already decided in favour of organic winegrowing in 1993. He is thus regarded as one of the pioneers and lateral thinkers of the organic wine scene. It is important for us to work in harmony with nature according to his credo: “Good wine comes from an intact landscape. Great wines are created when the potential of the ecosystem can be used optimally.” Together we want to raise consumer awareness for high-quality organic wines.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Joscha Dippon: I like complex and multi-layered Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). My goal is to produce Spätburgunder with playful fruit yet good structure. My Edition J has exactly these attributes thanks to semi-carbonic maceration. By the way, our red wines are almost exclusively matured in French barriques.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Joscha Dippon: There is no such thing as one good entry-level wine, as individual tastes are as diverse as our wine selection. The best way for us to find the right wine for someone is to speak with them personally.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Joscha Dippon: Our red wine blend “Robert Vollmöller” has been on the market for 20 years and still lives up to its name today. It is very popular with our customers due to its powerful structure and harmonious maturation in barriques. If you ask me, it is our wine with the best price-performance ratio!

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Joscha Dippon: There is no other profession that is more versatile than that of a vintner! I am proud to accompany and be responsible for my wines from the development of the idea through production and sales. I love and live the winegrowing profession!

VDP: Do you have role models?

Joscha Dippon: I don’t have such a definite role model. Of course, my father’s experience has a great influence on our work, but at the same time I go my own way.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Joscha Dippon: With the takeover of the winery on 1 July 2019, my family and I are the third generation to herald the new era of the estate.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Joscha Dippon: Of course, I stick to traditions that have proven their value over many years. Not everything has to be made new, but many things can be rethought. There will certainly be change and innovation under my name – let us surprise you!

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Joscha Dippon: Counter question: why would you want to miss the view, the atmospheric events and a personal insight into the winery? This is the only way to truly experience wine. We would also be very pleased to talk to you and get to know you as friends of our wines.

Arriving

we went to Meursault to conclude the day with wine and music at the "De Bach à Bacchus Festival de Meursault".

We were very much in for a treat this evening. Five very prestigious domaines opened their doors, organized concerts in their gardens and offered their prestigious wines. Meursault is a small village and with a wine glass in our hands, we walked from domaine to domaine, listening to music and sipping wine. The domaines were: Maison Wambergue, Clos Saint-Jacques, Domaine Pierre Morey, Château de Cîteaux.

De Bach à Bacchus

Imagine… strolling through the streets of a medieval village, glass in hand, to the music of Chopin, Mozart or Schuman. A movie scene? Even better! A unique experience at the Festival Musical des Grands Crus de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in Meursault.

Created in 1986 by Yves Henry, the Bach à Bacchus festival ambles its visitors, who come to applaud the talented artists as they perform in Meursault’s emblematic venues. In addition to classical music concerts, the event will delight lovers of wine and Burgundian gastronomy, offering tastings in the company of singers and musicians.

Outdoors, in cellars or Murisaltiens’ homes… Fanfare, organ, jazz, piano and unusual ensembles resonate during your tastings. In tribute to the nobility of Burgundy wines, the festival combines vines and music for a refined cultural marriage.

A Burgundy wine enthusiast and music lover, this musical and oenological journey is for you! On the program each year: concerts, wine tasting and places to discover…for a magical weekend in Côte-d’Or.
