The Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany was released in November 2022.

It contains a most interesting "Next Generation" list with 10 young winemakers who have just taken over their parents' business, work with them or have founded their own winery.

See: Next Generation - Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany 2023 List of 10 Young Winemakers to Watch

The "Wine Personality of the Year" Award went to Gesine Roll. She is the Owner/ Winemaker of Weingut Weedenborn in Rheinhessen, which we visited recently on the Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

Atop one of the highest elevations in Rheinhessen, inspired by the picturesque landscape in their mountain community of Monzernheim, sits this family-owned, 16 hectare vineyard. Outstanding wines are the standard for winemaker Gesine Roll where she cultivates her take on the classic approach to Riesling. Additionally, the winery has directed an increased fascination with and focus on Sauvignon Blanc. But whether it be Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc, the winery's devotion to produce clean and fresh offerings continues to establish their reputation as respected winemakers.

Gesine Roll of Weingut Weedenborn/ Rheinhessen: Wine Personality of the Year - Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany 2023

Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany 2023: "The image often drawn as the 'Queen of Sauvignon' is misleading, because Gesine Roll is more of a clever strategist and a passionate fighter than a feudal lady resting on a throne. With great foresight, the winemaker seized her chance and continued to develop her father's business according to the motto "the early bird catches the worm". In doing so, she developed freely and, with her concentration on Sauvignon Blanc, she not only recognized the potential of the vineyards in the high areas of Rheinhessen, but also recognized the advantages of the cooler climate and exploited them with the greatest dedication. The result is world-class wines, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in Germany in terms of the distinctiveness and diversity of this grape variety.”

Picture: Wilhelm Weil, Gesine Roll, Stuart Pigott, Christian Schiller and Annette Schiller at Gut Hermannsberg in 2019

Cellar Tour and Tasting in the Courtyard with Owner/ Winemaker Gesine Roll at Weingut Weedenborn in Monzenheim, Rheinhessen - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

Weingut Weedenborn is located in Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region, in the village of Monzernheim, about an hour south of Mainz by bus, close to world renowed winemakers KP Keller, Wittmann and Battenfeld-Spanier.

Rheinhessen is a region with gently rolling vine-covered hills as far as your eye can see. It forms a triangle between the Rhein and the Nahe river. Rheinhessen has long been the backwater of the German wine scene in terms of quality. Over the last two decades a generation of young, exquisitely trained, well-travelled, and highly motivated vintners put Rheinhessen back on the map.

We started the visit with a tour of the winemaking facilities and then sat down in the lovely courtyard for a tasting of Gesine's wines.

Weingut Weedenborn is represented in the USA by Weygandt Metzler.

One of those gifted winemakers in Rheinhessen is Gesine Roll, owner of the Weedenborn winery. She trained at the well-knows estate Bassermann-Jordan and at Vergelegen in South Africa. The estate is located in Monzernheim, and sits on the highest elevation in Rheinhessen on a limestone terroir.

The 50 acres winery grows the classic grape Riesling plus some Burgundy varieties; but Gesine’s focus lies particularly on making stellar Sauvignon-Blancs. Vineyard management is done with regard to environmental consciousness. There are no herbicides or insecticides used to strengthen the vines. Biodiversity is observed by using biocompost and planting of special grasses and herbs in the vineyards. I quote Gesine: “Elegance and appeal are particularly important to me when it comes to wines. That the wines are very precise and "easy to drink", not fat or filling. The altitude of the vineyards of our winery with cool nights and lots of wind is ideal for my favorite wine style”.

Weingut Weedenborn/ The Wine Merchant (Norway)

Weingut Weedenborn is located in the village Monzernheim, on the highest elevation of Reinhessen, with a wonderful view above the well-known vineyards Morstein and Kirchspiel in Westhofen. It is a family owned and runned estate, and Gesine Roll, a very talented young winemaker took over the control, after her father, in 2005. Her dedication and focus to achieve her goals for the family winery is impressive, and the estate is getting recognized by both wine press and customers. Just recently the winery achieved four stars in Falstaff wein guide, and one the Sauvignon Blancs from the estate was listed as one of the best German wines by Gault&Millau, regardless of grape or style.

Sauvignon Blanc plays the main role at Weedenborn. Almost 50 percent of the 22 hectares of vineyards are planted with Sauvignon Blanc. The other important focus for them is the Chardonnay. They also produce top quality wines from Weissburgunder, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Precision, purity and freshness is the signature for all Weedenborn wines. The high altitude of the vineyards with cold nights and lots of wind creates perfect conditions for the wines. Some of their best Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are planted on some of the most famous vineyards in Rheinhessen, like Morstein and Kirchspiel, which is very rare.

Weedenborn is already a star, but a star that is still rising!

Tasting at Domaine la Bouïssière, Gigondas, Southern Rhône, with Josiane Faravel - Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

Gilles and Thierry Faravel of Domaine la Bouïssière belong to the superstars of Gigondas and are perhaps the whizzards of the Rhône.

Right in the middle of Gigondas, just around the corner of Restaurant L’Oustalet, where we had dinner:

Wine-pairing Dinner at Restaurant L’Oustalet, 1 Star Michelin, in Gigondas, with Owner-chef Laurent Deconinck and Alexandre Fréguin, UK Best Sommelier 2018 - Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

and a block away from Clos de Tourelles, where the tasting of the Beaucastel wines took place:

they have a little tasting room.

Josiane Faravel, the she sister of Gilles and Thierry Faravel, was our host and we were also joined by their mother.

This was a short, tasting-room only event.

Domaine La Bouissiere

The 45 acres of vineyards of this estate are located on some of the highest vineyards in Gigondas. Thierry and Giles’ father Antonin Faravel carved the vineyards out of the stone cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the 60s. He was aware of the hot southern climate and knew that the cooler temperatures of the higher altitude and the rocky soils would produce perfectly ripe grapes that would produce wines with more acidity and a moderate alcohol level. Vineyard work is done according to organic principles. The oldest vines are between 60 and 70 years old. Harvest is performed by hand, and grapes are partially destemmed and lightly crushed, depending on the vintage. Fermentation on indigenous yeasts takes place in unlined cement tanks or stainless steel tanks; wines age in a combination of tank, larger foudre and barrique. Wines are bottled by gravity and are unfined and unfiltered.

Domaine la Bouïssiere

(North  North Berkely Imports)

In the sultry south, altitude matters. Wines from Domaine la Bouïssiere hail from some of the highest vineyards in Gigondas, and thus are markedly more balanced, elegant and age-worthy than wines from the lowlands.

In the 1960s, Antonin Faravel began to carve his vineyards out of the crumbling stone cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail (pictured on the family’s wine labels). He knew that the cooler temperatures and rocky soils would produce perfectly ripe grapes, with better acidic balance and lower alcohol, too. While other winemakers quickly followed Antonin’s lead, Domaine la Bouïssiere without question is the original, high-altitude Gigondas.

Yet it certainly takes more than a mountain to make a world-class red. Antonin’s sons, winemakers Thierry and Giles Faravel, border on the fanatical when it comes to the health of their vines and grapes. Theirs are wines that are intimately tied to and faithfully reflect the rugged, sensual beauty of the Provençal landscape from which they’re born.

Most of the Faravel family’s Gigondas vines are located in a high-altitude, narrow valley between the Dentelles de Montmirail, a row of steep granite cliffs west of Mont Ventoux. Top soils are thin and very rocky; sub-soils are solid rock. (These vineyards are so steep that the Faravels have to use a tractor with caterpillar treads to get up and down.) Vines are cared for according to organic principles as each vintage allows.

Musical Entertainment

There was piano music during the reception, and there was also musical entertainment during the dinner between the entree and dessert courses, with an opportunity for guests to sing along with some of the holiday songs and ring bells provided on the tables. This has been a very enjoyable part of our past holiday dinners in recent years! We had a medley of six traditional German holiday songs with the first verses sung in English and German, followed by two holiday songs in English.

Bye-bye

The dinner concluded by about 9:30 pm, with thanks to staff for their efforts and donation of a bottle of Dr. L Sekt to them, and a number of guests lingered until about 10 pm to continue their discussions and view the holiday decorations in the club.  One couple from Pennsylvania even stayed overnight at Cosmos, with Lisa Olson, our host for the evening and one of several Cosmos members in the GWS, sponsoring them for a room in the club.

Overall, a very enjoyable time was had by all, with many favorable comments on the dinner and entertainment!  We have brought our 2022 45th Anniversary wine year to a fitting conclusion, and can look forward to 2023, with a board meeting to be scheduled for January and a members meeting for February.

Famille Hugel is one of the major producers of Alsace wine and has been an important force in the Alsace wine industry in its developments during the second half of the 20th century. For over 370 years and with 13-family generations the Hugel family has unrivaled experience and knowledge of Alsace vineyards and winemaking. Known today for their passion and modern outlook, the dynamic Hugel family, located in the picture-postcard fortified village of Riquewihr, has earned a worldwide reputation for their Alsace wines.

Owner Jean Frédéric Hugel was our host. We toured the winery, which is situated right in the center of Riquewihr, and then sat down for a tasting.

Following the visit of Hugel, we stayed on in Riquewihr for a couple of hours to have lunch and for sightseeing.

With André Hugel and Marc-André Hugel in Riquewihr

A few months before our visit, Jean Frédéric Hugel`s grandfather, Alsace wine industry titan André Hugel, had passed away at the age of 92 following Covid-related complications.

The last time Annette and I had seen André Hugel was during the Alsace Tour 2019 with the Weinfreundeskreis Hochheim. In 2019, Marc-André Hugel was our host and the late André Hugel paid us a visit.

Famille Hugel

The Hugel family have been winegrowers since 1639. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family gained an enviable reputation for their winegrowing skills and for the meticulous way in which they cultivated their vineyards. In 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel left the old family property and established himself in premises in the center of Riquewihr which still form the heart of the family business. The Hugel family have been instrumental for the official recognition for Alsace late-harvest "Vendange Tardive" and "Sélection de Grains Nobles" wines. They also introduced the “Gentil” wines, a blend like the “Edelzwicker” but only allowed for blending the four noble grapes of Alsace: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Gewürztraminer.

Hugel et Fils have three principal wine lines:

(i) Hugel Maison: Wines made from grapes purchased from winegrowers under long-term contract, in a dozen of vineyards around Riquewihr.

(ii) Hugel Tradition: Wines are also made from grapes purchased, but with a stricter selection of grapes.

(iii) Hugel Jubilee: These wines come exclusively from the vineyards in the "Hugel" estates and are made in only the very best vintages.

Pfalz

(London Wine Competition)

Palatinate is the second-largest of the 13 German wine regions. Prior to the early 1990s, it was known officially as Rhine Palatinate. The wine region of Palatinate and the federal state of Palatinate overlap, but the wine region accounts for only 5% of the total area of the much larger federal state. The region of Palatinate consists of an 80-kilometer stretch of wine growing land.

Overall, 45 different types of white grapes and 22 different types of red grapes are grown in Palatinate. The mix between white wine varietals and red wine varietals is 61/39. By far, the most popular varietal is Riesling, which accounts for 23.2% of all wine produced in Palatinate. In addition, Dornfelder (13.5%), Müller-Thurgau (9.8%), Blauer-Portugieser (9.3%) , and Spatburgunder (6.8%) are popular wine varieties.

Wine grapes have been grown in Palatinate since the ancient Roman era. In fact, some Roman landhouses having been discovered in the region. It is only since the 1980s, however, that Palatinate has started to appear on the radar of international wine enthusiasts.

In terms of climate, Palatinate is known as one of the warmest, driest and sunniest German wine regions. By way of comparison, the local microclimate is similar to Alsace in France (located to the south) and Baden in Germany (located to the east).

A popular wine drink in Palatinate consists of local wines mixed with sparkling water to form “schorle.” This wine drink is typically consumed in a special glass known as the dubbeglas that hold either 1/2-liter or 1/4-liter of liquid. Each wine-producing city or village in Palatinate typically hosts a wine festival each year, where both wine and “schorle” are consumed.

Today we explored the Fronsac appellation.

Clive Coates, Master of Wine, one of the world’s leading wine authority, writes: “Of all the non-classic areas of Bordeaux—outside the areas of Haut-Médoc, Médoc, Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol—Fronsac wines have the most definition, the most personality.... A good Fronsac wine will usually cost less than a Médoc cru bourgeois, or a minor Saint-Émilion grand cru classé and is normally a better wine. So the area has value for money, too, on its side.“

We had lunch at Restaurant Le Bord d’Eau in Fronsac. The restaurant literally sits on the Dordogne river. The view is gorgeous and the food is recommended by the Michelin guide.

After lunch, we went to Château de la Rivière, Appellation Canon-Fronsac.

Is Germany becoming a Red Wine Country?

$
0
0

In 2021, according to the Bundesinformationszentrum Landwirtschaft, red grapes accounted for about 33.000 hectares of the German vineyard area of a bit more than 100.000 hectares.

40 years earlier, the vineyards planted with red grapes accounted for about 1/3 of that size, i.e. 11.000 hectares.

Within the period of 40 years, the red wine produced by Germany has grown dramatically, increasing by 300 percent overall, or on average about 8 percent per year.

With this trend continuing, Germany would soon be a predminantly red wine producing country.

However, the last 5 years have seen a reversal of this trend and red wine production has declined in Germany.

Currently, in terms of hectares, 68 percent of German wine production is white and 32 percent is red, down from 37 percent in 2006.

Still, Germany has become a serious red wine producer, due to a number of reasons, including climate change, within a time span of 40 years.

Steffen Schindler of the Deutsches Weininstitut argues that the reason for the decrease in red wine production in the last couple of years is demand-driven: People drink more and more white wine because it suits many trends in modern cuisine better: nordic, asian, vegetarian, vegan, more poultry, fish, salads, vegetables.

Steffen Schindler: "The German Dream Team Riesling & Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are now the two most widely planted varieties in Germany. This is due to the fact that Spätburgunder has been very stable over the past years, while Müller-Thurgau lost a lot of surface and has finally dropped to third place in 2021. Needless to say that Riesling is by far the most widely planted variety, and still growing slightly! The other big winner in recent years has been Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris/Grigio) to the effect that in 2021 it has climbed to forth place, pushing Dornfelder back to number 5. PINOT PARADISE GERMANY: Taken together, the various pinot varieties now cover 29.8 % of all vineyards in Germany!

On the way to Les Baux de Provence, where we would spend the night, we had lunch at Restaurant La Maison de Celou in Châteauneuf-de-Cadagne, which has a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Annette had selected the Menu Gourmand. We had a table on the terrace with a fantastic view of the Luberon area.

La Maison de Celou

Michelin Bib Gourmand

Clinging to the ramparts of the historic village, this lovely house embodies the art de vivre of Provence. The chef crafts spot-on dishes, steeped in originality, illustrated by scallops on toast with spinach and confit of tomatoes. The decadent desserts are fiendishly tempting, even addictive. Superlative sweeping view over Mont Ventoux and the Luberon range from the terrace.

Germany's Best Wines - 12th Focus-Magazin Wine Competition (2022)

Picture: Tasting at Weingut Krebs in Freinsheim, Pfalz, with Jürgen Krebs and Ann-Kathrin Müller - Germany-South and Alsace 2017 Tour by ombiasy WineTours

For the 12th time, the FOCUS-Magazin, a leading German weekly paper, with the support of the German Wine Institute (DWI), organized a wine competition.

All wines were tasted blindly by a jury of leading German winemakers, sommeliers, wine journalists and a Minister of the Federal Government, Mr. Wissing, who is from the Pfalz and used to be Minister of Agriculture (including wine) in the Government of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Interestingly, the focus was on what the Germans call "Burgunderreben/ burgundy grapes": Pinot varieties and Chardonnay. Germany's signature grape Riesling was on the backburner and only part of the competition in its sparkling form. There were no categories for neither fruity-sweet nor noble-sweet or dry Riesling still wines.

See here for the article and the results: FOCUS-Magazin, Ausgabe 48 vom 26. November 2022

Following the visit of Hugel

Cellar Tour and Tasting with Frédéric Hugel at Domaine Hugel & Fils in Riquewhir, Alsace - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

we stayed on in Riquewihr for a couple of hours to have lunch and for sightseeing.

Riquewihr

Riquewihr is a medieval town right in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards. It is basically an open air museum. The magnificent half-timbered houses dating back to the 15 th – 18 th centuries, the intact city wall, the Dolder-a 13 th century defensive city gate, the Thieves’ tower-the former prison of Riquewihr, they all make up an exceptional architectural whole. There are numerous wistubs, restaurants, cafés to get a bite for lunch.

Rheingau

(London Wine Competition)

Rheingau is one of the 13 German wine-growing regions, notable primarily for its superior Riesling wines. Overall, Rheingau is the German wine-growing region that has the highest proportion of Riesling production (78.8%) as a percentage of all wine produced. Other wines play only a minimal role in the region’s wine culture, including Spatburgunder (12.2%) and Müller-Thurgau (1.6%).

In addition to being such a prominent Riesling producer, Rheingau is also known for being the birthplace of many German winemaking traditions and innovations. It is the home to famous winemakers such as Schloss Johannisberg, as well as the original site where the German form of the “noble rot” was discovered.

In terms of total area, Rheingau extends for a 50-kilometer stretch along the Rhine River. The region is officially located in the German state of Hesse. Despite the region’s prominence in German wine-making lore, Rheingau only accounts for less than 5% of all German vineyard acreage under cultivation.  Vineyards are primarily located on the river’s right bank. Leading wine-producing villages of the Rheingau include Hochheim am Main, Walluf, Eltville, Rauenthal, Kiedrich, Hattenheim, Oestrich, Winkel, Johannisberg, and Rudesheim.

The history of winemaking in Rheingau extends back to the 900s and the reign of Charlemagne, who ordered vineyards to be planted in the region. Recently, there has been new evidence discovered of a winemaking tradition stretching all the way back to the Roman era. Given the long history of winemaking in Rheingau, it has acquired a special place in the overall tradition of German winemaking.

Winery Tour and Tasting at Château de la Rivière, Appellation Canon-Fronsac - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

We spent the day in the Fronsac region.

Following lunch

Lunch at the Dordogne River at Restaurant Le Bord d’Eau in Fronsac - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

we visited Château de la Rivière. After a tour of the impressive underground cellars, we sat down for an extensive wine tasting.

Château de la Rivière

The beginnings of Château de la Rivière go back to the 8th century when emperor Charlemagne gave the order to construct a fort on this strategic location. It is impossible to overlook this fairytale Château, which it is now after being converted from a fort into a château in the 16-hundreds, when driving through the Fronsac region.

It sits on a commanding hillside position overlooking the vineyards below. Château de la Rivière was owned by the same family for more than 500 years.

In 1995 Jean Leprince purchased the estate and undertook major modernisations. He was killed in a helicopter crash in 2002 and James Grégoire, the wealthy owner of a grape harvesting machine manufacturer, bought the château. In December of 2013 the wine world was shocked to learn that James Grégoire also died in a helicopter crash. He was flying over the vineyards with Chinese billionaire Lam Kok a day after he had signed a deal to sell him Château de la Rivière. Today it is the widow of Lam Kok, who owns the estate.

Château de la Rivière is the largest winemaking estate in the Canon-Fronsac appellation with about 150 acres of vineyard. 80% is planted with Merlot, 12% with Cabernet-Franc, 6% with Cabernet-Sauvignon, and 2 & with old Malbec vines. In addition to the red wine the Château produces a dry white wine made from 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Sauvignon Gris.

The terroir is predominantly limestone, similar to the Saint-Émilion appellation. Agricultural engineer and enologist Xavier Buffo is the executive director of Château de la Rivière. He has been working there since 1997, guaranteeing continuation and consistency and he is determined to make sure that the wines of Château de la Rivière are among the leading names in the appellation.

Dinner like in Madrid in Washington DC Downtown: Taberna Del Alabardero

Back again at Taberna Del Alabardero in Washington DC after an interruption of several years due to covid.

The Taberna del Alabardero is a renowned Basque restaurant in Madrid owned by Luis Lesama - a Madrid classic. The Taberna Del Alabardero in Washington DC (opened in 1989) is his only venture abroad (after Luis Lesama closed Seattle); it is arguably the best Spanish restaurant on the East Coast of the US. In addition to the superb menu and wine list, the decor is impressive and almost screams you will be treated like royalty.

Annette and I were regulars there mostly for wine dinners but also for Happy Hour at the bar. This time, it was a private dinner in one of the private rooms that feature dark walls, gold embellishments, a pretty chandelier and a large painting.

Memories of many very nice evenings at Taberna del Alabardero came back.

The Wines

Taberna Del Alabardero

This piece of Spain, just steps from The White House, will transport you to an elegant and royal atmosphere surrounded by friendly faces, an engaging menu and world-renowned wines.

Taberna Del Alabardero opened its doors in 1989, becoming one of the first Spanish restaurants in DC, and celebrated its 30 Anniversary with the 2019 Honorary RAMMY award. Spanish Chef Oscar Ordoñez brings back the authentic Spanish Cuisine and introduces new dishes with traditional ingredients.

Taberna’s seasonal menu features classic tapas, luscious paellas, refreshing sangria, and delicious desserts, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Eater Washington DC

Taberna del Alabardero feels more like a Spanish castle than a downtown dining room. The walls are ornately decorated in rich red wallpaper and there are old-school portraits hanging everywhere. Whether it’s lunch, brunch, or dinner, this is one of Washington’s oldest institutions for classic Spanish cuisine.

Washington Post

The red interior with the high ceilings and the glittering chandeliers couldn’t be more regal than if the king of Spain were sitting next to you. Yet the trick to ordering well at Taberna del Alabardero is to focus on the basics (and the tapas list): anchovies shimmering in vinegar, tender baby squid served with rice and a tomato-bread sauce, molten ham croquettes dispensed in a little fry basket. Conversation is put on hold as everyone watches cod carpaccio and marinated salmon get unleashed from a glass cloche filled with smoke, part of a mosaic completed with olives and tomato balls. But the fun is more in the show than in the flavors. And hen soup with thin noodles, a quail egg and a cracker sail seems lost in translation. The paella — grace mine with lobster, mussels and calamari, por favor — is as grand as the room in which it’s presented. Come dessert, rice pudding bests the flan. As expense-account places go, this one, near the city’s corridors of power, impresses as much with overheard conversations (“As the prime minister told me ...”), many in Spanish, as anything else.

Bye-bye

In Les Baux de Provence: Visit of the Olive Oil Mill Moulin Castelas and Dinner at the Pool and Overnight Stay at Hôtel Le Mas de l’Oulivier - Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

The Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France began in Lyon and ended 10 days later in Avignon. The most southern point we reached on the tour was the UNESCO World Heritage Village Les Baux de Provence.

There, we were deep in the provence. We stayed one night at Hôtel Le Mas de l’Oulivier in Les Baux de Provence. We visited an oil mill and enjoyed a couple of hours in the afternoon at the pool and went back there for a lovely cocktail dinner.

Les Baux de Provence

The site of Les Baux-de-Provence lies 15 km from Arles and 25 km from Avignon. The small village and its ruined medieval castle are the stars of the Alpilles. Set atop a rocky spur, it displays panoramic views over the Crau plain, the Camargue and the city of Arles.

Moulin Castelas

Moulin Castelas produces award-winning olive oils from olives produced organically in their 110 acres of AOP groves on the sun-drenched footslopes of Les Alpilles in the Valley des Baux de Provence and 160 acres on the Plaine de Crau since 1997. We learned how olive oil is produced and tasted the different award winning olive oils that embody the exceptional character of the Provence terroir.

Hôtel Le Mas de l’Oulivier in Les Baux de Provence

Hôtel Le Mas de L’Ouliviés in Les Baux is a 4 star traditional Provençal country house style hotel sitting in the center of an olive grove at the foot of the rocky, steep slopes of the village of Les Baux de Provence. The beautifully landscaped pool invites for a relaxing swim.

Gorgeous Garden

We enjoyed the beautiful setting, relaxed in the gorgeous garden, took a dip in the pool and got a feel for a provençal lifestyle.

He also is the Co-author of Understanding Wine Technology (4th edition) and he was named as one of the 2022 wine industry leaders by Wine Business Monthly.

Nicolas regularly shares his thoughts on his linkedin account. Recently, he provided in a most interesting 3-part series a concise overview of German wine, including a review of German labeling regulations.

I am re-releasing Nicolas Quillé's "German Wine" linkedin posts below as published on his linkedin account. Comments are welcome, in particular with regard to the section on the German labeling regulations, which were modified substantially recently. Please use the Institute of Masters of Wine page of Nicolas Quillé for your comments.

I met Nicolas in 2011 at a wine conference in Oregon (Oregon Pinot Gris Symposium at Oak Knoll Winery in Hillsboro), when he was running the Pacific Rim Estate, founded by icon Randall Grahm, and since then we have stayed in touch.

Overview of German Wines: Part 1

#Germany represents 3% of the world's #wine production fermenting 9 million hectoliters (Hl) yearly. It is a serious wine consumer (20 million Hl) thus making it the largest net wine importer in volume. The German wine landscape is fast evolving, and it is finishing its pivot from an entry level sweetish wine producer to a terroir and variety-based business. The two contributors to this evolution have been the success of mid-sized, quality-oriented producers and the commercial momentum of Riesling wines. Today, Germany is well positioned to sell wines that have vibrant aromatics, a sense of purity and a cool climate mouthfeel supported by the high natural acidities from its northerly latitude.

The vast majority of German's vineyard land is sheltered in the continental southwest, away from the cold and wet North and Baltic seas and along the Rhine River or one of its tributaries. The northern latitude is often mitigated by planting on steep south and southeast facing slopes in an attempt to capture every possible ray of sunshine.

German vineyards are planted with 2/3 white grapes and 1/3 reds grapes but be aware that there is a strong movement towards more red grapes, and especially Pinot Noir. Germany is the home of the Riesling grape (35% of global production) and it accounts for 24% of all German plantings. The other varieties that Germany can claim global leadership include Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Muller Thurgau, and Silvaner. Other quintessential northern European varieties planted in Germany includes Pinot Gris (Grauerburgunder), Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder), Trollinger (aka Schiava Grossa) & Lemberger. Germany has an historical interest in grape hybridization (many developed domestically) and among the most popular are red grapes that were planted because of their high yields during cooler times such as Dornfelder (complex cross of Pinot Noir, Trollinger, Blaufrankish: dark and floral), as well as productive white crosses such as Muller Thurgau (Riesling x Madeleine Royale), Bacchus (Silvaner, Riesling, Muller) and Scheurebe. Finally, a few French international varieties are starting also to be planted such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

Of all German wines, it is Riesling that captures the attention. Its great versatility allows for the making of different wine styles, from dry to sweet, from still to sparkling. Riesling’s intense aromatic (citrus, jasmine) and polarizing balance of high acid and residual sugars create some of the most exquisite wines in the world: There cannot be a serious German wine tasting without a Riesling! Sparkling wines (Sekt) are also a very important category; Germans are the number one consumers of sparkling wines in the world and the third largest producer. Sekt styles range from entry level tank fermented wines to glorious Methode Traditionelle. As mentioned, red wines are on the rise and there are serious Pinot Noir to be found.

Overview of German Wines: Part 2

The German grape growing core area is made of the five regions: Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Mosel, Baden and Wurttemberg - together they represent 85% of all German wines:

-         Rheinhessen (26% of vineyards): A warm and dry region that is the workhorse of Germany. The area along the Rhine between Oppenheim and Nackenheim or near Worms produce the top wines of the region
-         Pfalz (23%): The northern continuation of Alsace. It is the driest region of Germany. Expect full body wines with ripe aromatics and the highest ABV of Germany.
-         Baden (15%): A spread out region that is split in several areas. The main region is on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Alsace. The star variety of the region is Spatburgunder (half of all German Spats are planted in Baden) – some of the Spats may have shown lots of new oak in the past, but this is fortunately disappearing.
-         Wurttemberg (12%): Most of the wines from this region are sold and drunk domestically. They are many light reds made in the region from Trollinger, Lemberger (some styles may be bold and oaky), and Schwarzriesling.
-         Mosel (9%): This is white wine heaven in Germany. 60% of the region is planted with Riesling that are highly sought after. The Rieslings from this regions are light in body, high in acid and often have residual sugars - delightful!

The rest of Germany:

-         Franken (6%): Along the river Main, this area is driven by its continental climate. The most distinctive wines of the area are made from the Silvaner grape. The region has its own bottle shape: the “bocksbeutel”.
-         Nahe (4%): A white wine region with wines that are less vibrant than the Mosel but with higher acidities than the warmer Rheinhessen.
-         Rheingau (3%): A small but renowned region with extremely high quality and mostly Trocken wines. The vineyards are on a beautiful south facing slope above the Rhine river which is especially wide in that area. 86% of the area is planted with Riesling. There are excellent Spatburgunder vineyards planted on the western side of the area.
-         Other regions include the eastern vineyards of Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen, the Ahr Valley which produce highly priced Spatburgunders plus Mittelrhein and Hessiche Bergstrasse.

Overview of German Wine: Part 3

German wine labeling rules take into account a mix of ripeness levels (based on sugar concentration at harvest), grape origin and vineyard yields (and a few other technical parameters). Based on yields and specific growing areas there are four basic levels at the federal level:

- Deutscher Wein (4% of production)
- Landwein (almost never found but there are 26 of them if you must know)
- Qualitätswein (64%)
- Pradikätswein (32%).

For European law initiates, Landwein is a PGI and the latter two are PDO. Pradikätswein can be further divided into different ripeness levels (from least to most): Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein, and Trockenbeerenauslese. The ripeness level is estimated with the help of a must density measurement at harvest delivered in Oechsle units. Sugar being heavier than water, the must density goes up as sugar concentration increases. For example, a juice with a density of 1.090 (9% heavier than pure water at 20C) will clock 90-degree Oechsle in Germany (different juice sweetness units are used elsewhere, based on my previous example you may find: 1,090 density in France, 12% potential alcohol (or Baumé), and 21.6 Brix in Anglo-Saxon countries). Another well-defined area is residual sugar at bottling, and it is appropriate to use these terms when describing the style and sweetness of German wines:

-         Trocken < 4g/L (or up to <9g/L if the TA is no more than 2g/L apart)
-         Halbtrocken between 4 and 12 g/L (or up to 18 g/L is RS is no more than 10 g/L away)
-         Lieblich between 12 and 45 g/L
-         Suss above 45 g/L.

As far as geographies, the Federal labelling was redefined in 2021, with significant changes for Qualitätswein and Pradikätswein quality levels. It follows a familiar russian doll model going from the large region (using the European PDO format - matching the previous "Bereich") to the Village (Ortswein), to the individual vineyard (Einzellage). Individual vineyards are further differentiated between "normal", premier sites (Erstes Gewachs), and grand sites (Grosses Gewachs), Grosses Gewachs must also be “trocken”. The vineyard site must appear alongside the village name (conjunctive labelling of sort).

The VDP (3% of total German production, 5% of vineyards planted) have created a private and more stringent set of rules for its members. The Federal government has somewhat aligned its revised 2021 rules to the VDP - to the great pleasure of frustrated German wine consumers like myself! All VDP wines must qualify as Pradikätswein  and then the designation of origin follows a Burgundian model of regional wines (Gutswein), village (Ortswein), Premier Cru (Erste Lage) and Grand Cru (Grosse Lagen). Dry VDP Erste Lagen wines can be labelled Erstes Gewachs (1G for short) while dry VDP Grosse Lagen wines can be labelled Grosses Gewachs (GG for short).

Domaine Weinbach is one of the most prominent estates in Alsace.

Owners Eddy Leiber-Faller was our host. He took a look at the vineyards, toured the wine cellar and sat down in the kitchen for a seated tasting, where we also joined by his mother, Catherine Faller.

Domaine Weinbach

Domaine Weinbach is beautifully situated at the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill within the 12.5 acres large Clos des Capucines, the former Capuchin monastery still today completly surrounded by a high stone wall.

Today, 73 acres of vineyards belong to Domaine Weinbach. The Capuchin monks started making wine in 1612 and established the Domaine Weinbach. During the French revolution it became a national property. In 1898 the domaine was acquired by the Faller brothers.

Théo Faller, the next generation, developed the estate into one of the best wineries in Alsace. His unrelenting commitment to delivering excellence and his focus on the incomparable terroirs and grape varieties produced wines of the highest quality.

After Théo’s death in 1979, the winery was managed by his widow Colette and their two daughters, Laurence and Catherine, who continued the commitment to quality.

In 1998 they started the process of converting to biodynamic winemaking. I quote the Fallers: “The main motivation is to increase soil activity and thus stimulate soil/root/aerial system exchanges with the objective of producing better quality, terroir driven and aromatically complex grapes and wines. Biodynamics helps us care for and protect our vines not only for now but also for future generations.”

In 2014 Laurence died at age 47 and in February 2016 Colette passed away.

Catherine Faller is now the sole manager of the estate.

Annette already provided similar presentations, with different sparkling wines, at the National Convention of the American Wines Society in 2021 and at the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter). See the two postings below. Both postings contain the powerpoint presentations Annette used at the tastings.

Abstract - National Convention of the American Wines Society in 2021

The market of sparkling wine has seen the fastest-growing trend over the last decade, with world-wide consumption up 56%. It can be confusing to see all the different labels, with prices vacillating between just a few dollars per bottle to close to one hundred.

There is Champagne, Cava, Crémant, Prosecco, Sekt, and recent trendy additions, such as Pet-Nat, to name just a few. But they all have one thing in common: they have significant levels of carbon dioxide in the bottle to make them fizzy. We will taste six sparkling wines from around the globe and will evaluate the difference in the various methods of how the CO2 gets into the bottle.

Rheinhessen

(London Wine Competition)

Rheinhessen is the largest of the 13 German wine regions, occupying the left bank of the Rhine between Worms and Bingen. It is officially located in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, although prior to World War II, it was located in the federal state of Hesse.

Of the wines produced in Rheinhessen, 69% are white and 31% are red. The most popular grape varietals include Riesling (16.4%), Müller-Thurgau (16.0%), Dornfelder (13.3%) and Silvaner (8.8%). Rheinhessen is also known as the home of the famous Liebfraumilch, a semi-sweet wine style that was once a German export legend.

Geographically, natural landmarks help to mark the boundaries of Rheinhessen. To the north and east, there is the Rhine River. To the west, there is the Nahe River. And to the south there are the Haardt Mountains. The region, which includes the famous German towns of Mainz, Worms, Bingen and Alzey, is sometimes referred to as “the land of the thousand hills,” for all the rolling hills and orchards in the area.

The most popular area for growing white wines in Rheinhessen is known as the Rhine Terrace, located between Oppenheim and Nackenheim. The most popular area for growing red wines in Rheinhessen is Ingelheim. The area of the Rhine Terrace is so massive that it dwarfs the size of the Rheingau, a nearby German wine region.

As in other German wine regions, the history of winemaking in Rheinhessen can be traced back to the era of Charlemagne. For nearly 1,000 years, the tradition of viticulture has thrived in this German wine region.

We spent a morning in Arles, touring the town. Tour Guide François Carré gave us a fantastic city tour and explained the Roman history of Arles as well as the van Gogh era.

When visiting the Southern Rhône a sightseeing tour to Arles is a “must”. Arles exists since 800 BC but it became an important city much later when it came under Roman influence in 123 BC. During the Late Roman Empire Arles was the cultural and religious center and the city reached its peak of influence during the 4th and 5th centuries, when Roman Emperors frequently used it as their headquarters during military campaigns.

Arles is also knows as the city of van Gogh. It was here where he produced some of his most famous paintings and we will pass by some of the locations we will recognize from his paintings.
