Dinner at Rania in Washington DC Downtown: Innovative Indian Cuisine and Excellent Wines, USA/ India/ Germany

Triggered by a review of Tom Sietsema in the Washington Post, Annette, Maureen, Fuad and I had dinner at Rania in Washington DC downtown.

The food was innovative and the 19-page wine list amazing, ranging from decent enty-level wines to premium wines from all major wine regions.

2 of us had the 4-course menu and 2 of us the 3-course menu.

We had 2 bottles, a German Pinot Noir from Weingut Ziereisen, an non-mainstream producer highly regarded by German wine afficiniados but hard to find in the USA and a traditional Chianti Classico.

The restaurant was full with young to middle age people. You saw very few white shirts and ties.

Rania

We are excited to welcome you to Rania, DC's newest, hottest destination for modern Indian food. Tom Sietsema has called our food "some of the most inspired Indian cooking in DC." Here at Rania, we offer homage to the time-honored traditions, rich flavors, and spices of India in an intimate, luxurious setting. We look forward to sharing our vision with you!

Choose between our sophisticated, highly acclaimed 3 or 4-course prix-fixe menu, or a flexible à la carte option (note: à la carte available for dinner Tuesday through Thursday, and Friday & Saturday after 9 PM)

Led by Executive Chef Chetan Shetty—formerly of the critically acclaimed Indian Accent in New York and Delhi (#22 on the prestigious 2022 Asia’s 50 Best list)—RANIA will introduce our guests to a new and unexpected approach to Indian cuisine.

Eater Washington DC

Much of India’s rich history can be observed through the lens of regional cuisine. Influenced by nine major religions, a range of geographic landscapes, trade routes, and colonization, there’s more to India than vindaloo and naan (although those dishes are undeniably popular for good reason). The D.C. area is a hub for Indian immigrants, with many choosing to share their memories and family recipes in professional kitchens.

From nationally lauded, modernized fine dining venues to fast-casual counters, here are over a dozen reliable destinations for Indian food around D.C.

Rania

The palace-like Penn Quarter space that formerly housed Punjab grill reopened this spring as a luxe new Indian restaurant called Rania, which means “Queen” in Hindi and Sanskrit. Chef Chetan Shetty, who recently cooked at acclaimed New Delhi restaurant Indian Accent, guides diners through a multi-course dinner of inventive Indian cuisine that goes way beyond the expected (as in dishes like braised lamb shank accented with spinach, coconut foam, ghoda masala spice blend, and mustard frills). Prix-fixe menus of three ($75) or four courses ($90) join an a la carte menu at the restaurant’s Sundowner Bar.

Rania offers guests the option between a 3 or 4-course prix-fixe menu OR an à la carte menu. The prix-fixe menu is available for either 3 courses ($75) or 4 courses ($95), with the option to add wine pairings and cocktails as desired. The à la carte menu will be available Tuesdays thru Thursdays, and Fridays and Saturdays after 9 pm. The à la carte menu will not apply to our special holiday menus. vv

Le Maximilien

The restaurant sits in the heart of the vineyards in Alsace providing for panoramic views
from the terrace in the summer. Le Maximilien is a renowned dining destination. Chef
Jean-Michel Eblin presents an innovative and contemporary cuisine combining the
flavors of the Alsatian terroir.

Michelin - 1 Star

Jean-Michel Eblin, the chef-patron of this place in the pretty village of Zellenberg, is clear on one thing: he will never sell it! We can understand his almost visceral attachment to this establishment, which is built on a plot of (Pinot Noir) vineyards that belonged to his family. With impressive consistency, he creates cuisine based on solid classical foundations, with the occasional nod to modern innovation for good measure. Might you opt for his turbot, green asparagus and morels or, alternatively, the shredded scallop, truffle and baby lettuce? The produce is fresh and of excellent quality; it is all elevated by a fine wine list: they have ticked all the boxes here.

Gault Millau 15/20

Welcome by Owner-Chef Jean-Michel Eblin

A few days ago, Stephan Reinhardt, who covers Germany for the Robert Parker Wine Advocate, released a list of his 5 favorite wines of 2022 on the Wine Advocate Website

This is a most interesting list, which I am re-releasing here, with the text of Stephan Reinhardt. I have added a few of my pictures.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker Wine Advocate: My 5 Favorite Wines of 2022

I am currently finishing another big Germany report with more than 700 wines that will be published here very soon. Of course, among them are many personal favorites, although that doesn’t mean these are the highest-rated wines. You could easily rank all the tasted wines by scores in our archive and wouldn’t need any further explanation. Yet here, I only recommend what I have personally bought this year or wish I would have bought early enough. 2021 was a very difficult vintage in Germany not only due to a very small crop but also due to the fact that many rainfalls let the grapes ripen only slowly and late. While the dry white wines are most likely not the best ever made, the classic predicates such as Kabinett and Spätlese brought some exceptional Rieslings, namely along the Mosel but also the Nahe and the Rhine. The naturally high but ripe acidity levels were just perfect for Rieslings that did not ferment to fully dry (or weren’t allowed to ferment dry), since the acidity combined with the mineral tension uplifts the sweetness that has rarely tasted that dry in recent years. In fact, I haven’t tasted such lean but dramatic Rieslings as the 2021s in more than 20 years, when global warming or climate change wasn’t yet on everybody’s minds. However, my favorites were not just Rieslings this year, and certainly not just 2021s.

A Wine for The Cellar:2021 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG (Germany, Nahe)

Tim Fröhlich's Rieslings from the Bockenauer Felseneck are among the most impressive wines in Germany. The steep slope is located somewhat off the beaten path, in the valley basin of the Ellerbach, a side valley of the upper Nahe. Fröhlich owns nine hectares in the purely south-facing site, where the vines climb from 250 to 310 meters in elevation up to a high plateau. About 80% of the acreage is planted with vines that are over 40 years old, sending their roots deep into the rocky, easily warmed, but also permeable soil that is dominated by upper red clay, with conglomerates of blue Devonian slate, white-gray quartzite and basalt boulders. Miraculously, the old vines defy summer drought (as they did in 2018 to 2020) but also the abundant rainfall that occurred in 2021. The precision and finesse of the Riesling Grosses Gewächs from the Felseneck was not affected by the 2021 vintage. In any case, the wine is incredibly impressive and expresses the multilayered slate minerality of the Felseneck terroir in a focused yet currently wild and untamed way, reminiscent of crushed flint and slate stones, herbs, green leaves, chamomile, lime zest and iodine. Full-bodied and rich on the palate, this is a pure and crystalline laser sword of a dry Riesling that should be cellared for at least 10 years in order to reach the Mount Everest of German Riesling.

A Wine That's Under the Radar:2017 Weingut Krone Assmannshausen Höllenberg GG (Germany, Rheingau)

The Höllenberg in Assmannshausen, Rheingau, is one of the most famous and best sites for Pinot Noir in Germany and has been for a very, very long time. Ewald Schug, father of Walter Schug, who grew up in the Assmannshausen domaine of the Hessische Staatsweingüter but became famous in Napa Valley and Carneros, produced some of the finest red wines in German history here between 1919 and 1959. Vintages such as 1945, 1947 and 1959 still easily hold their own alongside the most expensive grand crus from Burgundy, as so many tastings have proven. Thank goodness the treasury of the Staatsweingüter is well stocked, so that earlier this year I was again able to taste the Assmannshäuser Pinot Noirs far back into the 19th century (the report will be published in the first quarter of 2023), which once again proved the value of this steep slope on the Rhine. Nevertheless, it is neither the sought-after Höllenberg Pinots of youngster Carsten Saalwächter nor those of doyen August Kesseler or even those of the Staatsweingüter that have remained under the radar for so long, but it is the Pinot Noirs of Krone Assmannshausen belonging to the Weingüter Wegeler. Michael Burgdorf, the most reliable constant at Wegeler for 22 years, has also been responsible for these red wines growing on phyllite slate soils for 15 years. The pinnacle of his cellar master's art is the Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs from the Höllenberg. This juicy, salty and, above all, vital red wine comes on sale late, just as it used to when Assmannshäuser was synonymous with German red wine. Currently, the two vintages 2016 and 2017 are offered. Both vintages are great, but the 2017 is perhaps a touch denser and more dramatic: it is bright red, firm and distinctive, and although it’s no charmer, it is confident and terroir-driven, a rigorous classic of German red wine literature.

A Wine for Tonight:2009 J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Auslese Alte Reben (Germany, Rheingau)

Matured Riesling, of course, because this is what Riesling is made for. If you don’t have the chance, Hans-Josef Becker has. His winery in Walluf is something of a Gallic village in the Rheingau, even though Becker is not a rebel, just because he looks like one. Rather, he is a preservationist, a mustachioed patron saint of the authentic. Becker still uses the old German Prädikate (predicates) even for dry wines, which would be forbidden if he was a member of the VDP. The message included behind terms such as Kabinett, Spätlese or Auslese: My wine is naturally pure. Not improved, not sanded down, but naturally beautiful. The Pinot Noirs anyway, but also the vast majority of Rieslings are dry; and if they are not, then nature has arranged it that way, and man, Becker knows how to accept that. After all, he has a spacious cellar and sometimes allows his wines a lot of time. When Becker's wines have matured in the bottle for some years, like the 2009 Auslese from the Walkenberg—which was not fermented completely dry and which he put back on sale in late summer—then one would prefer to drink each bottle on its own. That's a mouthful of Riesling! And while many 2009s are hanging limp and heavy on the ropes today, Becker's Walkenberg knows how to dance, smack and charm. A wine that sings the praises of the Wallufer Walkenberg and, last but to least, of matured Riesling.

A Wine from a Producer That Exemplifies Sustainability: 2020 Adams Wein Chardonnay Lohpfad (Germany, Rheinhessen)

Since 2010, Dr. Simone Adams has been producing her own wines on the chalky weathered soils of Ingelheim am Rhein (Rheinhessen), predominantly from the grape varieties of the Burgundy family—i.e. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir—as well as Chardonnay. In her first 12 years, Adams has developed what she calls "empathic viticulture." It consists of drawing conclusions from close observation in the vineyard as well as in the cellar, which continues to improve and refine the work in the field as well as in the cellar for the sake of the vine and the wine. After a few years of experience, there was no way around ecological work and, as a last consequence, biodynamics. Next year, Adams’s vineyard will be certified biodynamic, but she already tends her 10 hectares of vines like a garden. One almost gets the impression that she is on a first-name basis with every vine and is happy to be able to work and learn in this natural milieu. Adams focuses entirely on the system of soil, plant and light and is highly creative in what she does to bring out "the elegance, the pure, the finesse" in her wines, which come from the 50th latitude and should accordingly be subtle even in times of global warming, leading to certain viticultural measures. Adams’s wines are reflections of their origins, at least as much as possible and a little more each year. In the cellar, Adams can then leave her wines "on a long leash." Overripe, maximum extraction and high alcohol yield are not sought after, nor are French genetics. Simone Adams, a warmly cheerful as well as down-to-earth and obliging person, produces subtle, highly authentic Ingelheim Burgundies. They are certainly not yet the most spectacular in the country, but that is exactly what they are in any case: fine and lively unique Ingelheim wines that are simply a joy to drink. In addition to her Pinot Noirs (which she calls Spätburgunder and not Pinot Noir), the 2020 Chardonnay Lohpfad from the Ingelheim Schlossberg stands out. Grown in clayey marl, the wine is powerful and intense yet pure, complex and full of tension, as the fruit is joined by salt and even iodine notes, as well as lively acidity and fine tannin structure. If there are producers who continue the great Ingelheim Pinot Noir tradition of the 19th century, then it is Simone Adams and also Carsten Saalwächter, from whom we will also have much to report in the coming years.

A Wine That’s Especially Good Value: 2021 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett (Germany, Mosel)

Ever since I have been drinking wine, I have been drinking Rieslings from Willi Schaefer. No Riesling is brighter, finer, more heavenly or more incomprehensible and yet stands with its feet in the slate that produces unmistakable wines of absolute world class in the Graacher Himmelreich and even more so in the Domprobst. One would recognize their smoky spiciness even in one's sleep and immediately want to open a bottle of Kabinett! The 2021 vintage was small in volume, but the qualities were superb! I didn’t study any wines longer this year than the 2021s from Christoph and Andrea Schaefer. Namely, the Kabinett Rieslings from this cool vintage are terrific. Although not dry, I first understood the darker-toned Domprobst in particular as a full-blown food wine, as deep and complex as it is for all its lightness. Great art, distributed over two fuders: AP #1 and AP #3. That is too little for the world, but to never forget the wine again, one sip is enough.

In the Saale-Unstrut region, there are no producers with 5/5, 4.5/5 or 4/5 stars in the Vinum WeinGuide Deutschland/ Germany 2023. There is 1 producer with 3.5/5 and there are 4 producers with 3/5 stars.

Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and I have met 4 of these 5 producers at various occasions over the past years, often at their estate during a Germany wine tour by ombiasy WineTours, which is owned and run by Annette Schiller and based in Washington DC, USA.

Saale Unstrut

(London Wine Competition)

The German wine region of Saale-Unstrut, located almost entirely within the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, is defined primarily by two rivers – the Saale and the Unstrut. It is also the northernmost of all of Germany’s wine regions, meaning that the most popular wines here are those that thrive in cooler climates.

In terms of white and red wines, white grape varietals account for nearly three-quarters (74%) of all wine production in Saale-Unstrut. The most popular white grape varietals include Müller-Thurgau (18.4%), Pinot Blanc (12.1%), Silvaner (8.3%) and Blauer Portugieser (6.7%). Popular red varietals include Dornfelder (7.3%).

Unlike in many of Germany’s other wine regions, Riesling wines do not account for the dominant share of wine production. According to the most recent available estimates, Riesling only accounts for 7.3% of all wines from this region.

Due to the cooler climate and shorter growing season, wines from Saale-Unstrut are known for their acidity, which many wine drinkers describe as refreshing. Many of the most popular vineyards are growing along the hill slopes of the river valleys.

Winemaking in Saale-Unstrut has existed since the 990s, when the Memleben Abbey was a famed producer of white wines. As in other areas of Germany, wine villages along the major river valleys sprung up in response to the demand for wines. Saale-Unstrut, though, has been largely overshadowed by other larger and more popular German wine regions, such as Mosel. In 1993, the Burgenlandkreis district within Saale-Unstrut opened a wine route for tourists to sample the wines of this northern German wine region.

Lunch at Pinasse Café, Cap Ferret, at the Bassin d'Arcachon - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

About an hour away by car from Bordeaux City is the Bassin d'Arcachon.

The Bassin d’Arcachon is one of the most beautiful regions in France. This region is a perfect mix of the earthy traditions of the Landes region and the seaside joys of the Atlantic coast of France. It has a special atmosphere with stunning landscapes and culinary traditions.

On the Bordeaux Tour by ombiasy WineTours, we always spent one day at the Bassin d'Arcachon. Our favorite place for lunch is Pinasse Café, Cap Ferret, with a gorgeous view over the bay, the oyster farms and the village of Arcachon and the Dunes de Pilat, the largest in Europe, in the distance.

The Bassin d'Arcachon

The Bassin d'Arcachon is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest coast of France, located just a few kilometres away from Bordeaux. The bay covers an area of 150 km² at high tide and 40 km² at low tide. Just south of the entrance is the Great Dune of Pyla. Nearly in the middle of the bay is a very particular island: L'île aux Oiseaux (Isle of the Birds).

Cap Ferret is a narrow strip of land between the Bay of Arcachon and the Atlantic Ocean where numerous no frills wooden oyster shacks line the beach (cabanes de pecheurs). The menu simply lists different kinds of oysters and their prices. It’s here that a large part of France’s 130,000-ton oyster harvest is produced. Cap Ferret is a fishing village with numerous oyster and seafood places.

Michelin - Pinasse Café

With its idyllic terrace overlooking the waves, this restaurant is an ode to Arcachon Bay and the Dune du Pilat. Local fish and shellfish take pride of place (oysters above all) and, as for the name, a "pinasse" is the traditional boat of the Arcachon coast.

Oyster Banks in Front of the Pinasse Café

From the Pinasse Café you have a good view of the oyster banks .

When we arrived, it was low tide and we could see the oyster banks. We even could have gone there as we have done before.

During lunch the water came in and the oyster banks disappeared in the water.

Restaurant Chez Hortense

With the group, we always have lunch at Pinasse Café, for a number of reasons, including the more central location and the view of the oyster banks. Another fine seafood place is Restaurant Chez Hortense, closer to the tip of Cap Ferret.

The most visited ancient monument in France, listed a world heritage site by Unesco, the Pont du Gard aqueduct remains one of humankind's great masterpieces. A marvel of Antiquity and a true technical feat, it is also a stupendous site that has regained its unspoiled state since its refurbishment.

We had lunch at Restaurant Les Terrassesat at Pont du Gard and spent about an hour touring the Pont du Gard.

Pont du Gard

Pont du Gard is an impressive ancient Roman aqueduct that served as the main component of the 50km-long canal that carried water between the spring at Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). Created 2000 years ago in the 1st century AD, this aqueduct to this day remains the highest elevated Roman aqueduct of all time, and together with Aqueduct of Segovia one that was best preserved.

Built over the period of just around 15 years in 50AD using 30 million shelly limestones, Pont du Gard aqueduct has the form of three arched bridges placed one atop of other. The top of the bridge features water-carrying channel with a constant gradient of just 2.5cm from one side of the bridge to another. The Roman architects had access to very impressive construction techniques, which enabled them not only to create this 50-kilometer Nîmes aqueduct network in short period but also to have it loose only 17 meters in height over its entire structure that passes via underground passages and through numerous mountains. The overall gradient of the entire Nîmes aqueduct network is just 1 in 18,241, which is much lower than many other Roman aqueducts.

Pont du Gard today stands 48 meters (160 feet) tall and 275-meter-long, but in its original state, it was much longer at 360 meters (1,180 feet). Its three-tiered arched design was revolutionary for its time, managing to span Gardon river below it with a central arch that is 24.5m wide, a record for any structure that was built in 1st century AD. The entire construction featured 64 spans (6 in the lowest section, 11 in mid and 47 in highest), although the top section is today missing 12 of the arches.

The aqueduct was in use between 1st to 4th century AD, with some part of the network remaining operational even to the 6th century. By that point entire structure fell into disuse, and natural clogging and lack of maintenance caused a buildup of natural material that blocked the flow of water. Instead of falling to ruin like the majority of the original Nîmes aqueduct network, Pont du Gard managed to survive due to its ability to be used as a pedestrian bridge. Local lords and bishops were required to preserve the bridge in the operational state, collecting tolls and keeping this structure in the good state.

By 17th century bridge was still operational, but some of its stones were damaged, missing or were looted. By the 18th century, this historic aqueduct started gaining more and more attention from both the local governments and the international community, and it eventually became a popular tourist landmark. After the 18th century, several organized efforts by the French state and local authorities led to restoration and preservation of the Pont du Gard bridge structure. In 2000, Pont du Gard was finally fully transferred into a site of historic heritage, transferring pedestrian traffic from it and into a nearby visitor’s center. The aqueduct and the scenic area immediately surrounding Pont du Gard are protected by French “Monument Historique” (1840), French law (1930) and as UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985), where it was described as a mark of masterpiece of human creation, in the same way as Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China.

Growing Area: Sachsen
Interview: Site, Terroir, Quality, Wooden Barrel. It is Worth the Effort to Push the Envelope in the Steep Sites
Martin Schwarz about his wines ans his wine estate in Meissen

VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Martin Schwarz: We are lateral entrants and the 1st generation as winemakers. Without family tradition, but unbound and free of conventions, we see ourselves as wine pioneers of the East. We began very enthusiastically 20 years ago with just under half a hectare of steep slopes in the MEISSNER KAPITELBERG. After the first few years, we were disillusioned: no vineyards to lease, no affordable building, we had almost emigrated... Then a stroke of luck: we were able to revive a historic vineyard, clear trees, put up dry stone walls and finally plant Chardonnay, Pinot, Riesling and a little Nebbiolo. Today it is our most important and also most beautiful vineyard, the FRIEDSTEIN in Radebeul, where our great growths will be produced in the future. In the meantime, we have been able to expand to 6 hectares and vinify in our own winery, a historic 18th century vineyard in Meißen, beautifully situated directly on the Elbe.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Martin Schwarz: Everything needs time to develop, not only the wine. You have to endure that and still remain in suspense.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Martin Schwarz: Site, terroir, quality, wooden barrel. It is worth the effort to keep pushing the limits of what is possible in the steep sites. Then come finesse, elegance and character. Our favourite grape varieties are the Rieslings, which wonderfully reflect the site characteristics of our granite weathered soils. The Burgundies, which are endowed with minerality and animating freshness in our climate zone.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Martin Schwarz: Due to the initially small vineyard area with many different grape varieties, we started with Cuveés back then, Weiß & Grauburgunder, Riesling & Traminer, Spätburgunder & Portugieser. To this day, they are one of our trademarks, as they show that by combining two grape varieties, independent wines full of character and complexity can be created.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Martin Schwarz: We are particularly proud of our Pinot Noir FRIEDSTEIN, which shows that great red wines can also be produced in Saxony. This is repeatedly confirmed by blind tastings in which we were able to achieve very good rankings.

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Martin Schwarz: The beginning was probably the Château Margaux 1975, which I preferred to Latin back in my school days and drank with a good friend in the Karlsaue in Kassel. Since then, I have been intensively involved with everything concerning winemaking and the wine world. Then, when I read about Geisenheim in "All about Wine" during my electrical engineering studies, it was clear to me that I only wanted to become a winegrower.

VDP: Do you have role models or mentors?

Martin Schwarz: In the 80s, the big wineries in Bordeaux and especially in Burgundy were the icons. That changed in the 90s when I discovered the top Rieslings and top Burgundies of German winemakers. My mentor was undoubtedly Joachim Heger, who had a lasting influence on me.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Martin Schwarz: They are very demanding and essential. To put the business, in which we have invested a lot, on stable feet. To fully exploit the high potential of viticulture in Saxony and to make it better known to the outside world.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Martin Schwarz: "Tradition is yesterday's innovation" hit the nail on the head by a well-known winemaker. However, tradition also contains a lot of well-selected experience that needs to be preserved. And the wheel is always being reinvented anyway... The core elements remain unchanged for us: Steillage, manual labour, low yields, selection, wooden barrel, long yeast storage.

VDP: Why should people still visit your winery?

Martin Schwarz: Here, in our region, there is so much to discover: the old town of Meissen with the porcelain manufactory and Albrechtsburg Castle, Moritzburg Castle and Park, of course the baroque city of Dresden, the slopes of the Elbe in Dresden and Saxon Switzerland and much much more...

Weingut Böhme und Töchter
Owner: Familie Böhme
Cellarmaster: Marika & Sandro Sperk
Member: Since 2022
Wine Area:6,56 acres
Grape Varieties:Riesling (17 %), Pinot Blanc (12.5 %), Pinot Noir (7 %), Chardonnay (7 %), Müller-Thurgau (14 %)
Geology: Freyburger Edelacker: The mild microclimate of the south-facing and partly heavily terraced steep slopes is determined by the Unstrut. The overlying shell limestone, which often meets grown limestone after only 50 centimetres, serves as an ideal heat reservoir. Mediterranean plants such as wild thyme and rock sorrel grow here. The wines are characterised by a recognisable minerality and filigree fruitiness, with a small but distinct herbal component. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
Growing Area: Saale Unstrut

Interview: A Great Wine doesn´t grow just Anywhere

Marika & Sandro Sperk about their wines and their wine estate in Gleina

VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Sandro Sperk: "A great wine does not grow just anywhere". – At the end of our years of wandering, we realised: It's still best at home - that's where we belong, that's where we are needed. Our family has been making wine in Gleina since 1986 - and that is why Gleina remains the centre of our work. This is where we live, this is where we press our wine. But the place where our greatest growths mature is the Freyburger Schweigenberg (single vineyard site Freyburger Edelacker). With soils of mineral-rich shell limestone and its steep southern exposure, this mountain is made for the grape varieties that are close to our hearts: Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Here they are at their best.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Sandro Sperk: "The region is in the nature of our wines."– We are curious and want to explore the potential of the Saale-Unstrut region and our vineyards. Because great things can be created through respectful treatment of our nature and manual labour. Böhme & Töchter stands for honest character wines from classic grape varieties and a down-to-earth approach to the craft. The small winery always has its finger on the pulse of the times and leads the way in the community.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Marika Sperk: We value tradition. In addition to working with steel tanks, in the cellar we rely more and more on long maceration periods, spontaneous fermentation, oak barrels - and on our gut feeling. This is rewarded with wines that tell of the microclimate and the soils of our vineyards, and which are a pleasure to drink again. Saale-Unstrut stands for grape variety diversity. Personally, however, we are particularly fond of Burgundy, especially Chardonnay.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Marika Sperk: Our Weißburgunder Ortswein is the perfect "Böhme & Töchter for beginners". A classic Burgundy from Saale-Unstrut: dry, taut and straightforward, paired with fresh chalky minerality and lots of drinking pleasure.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Sandro Sperk: To our Chardonnay from the Freyburger Schweigenberg. With determination and pioneering spirit, we planted the grape variety for the first time in this challenging steep slope in 2008. Since then, we have enjoyed the potential and positive development of the vines with each new vintage. The wine brings the complexity of the site and the terroir to the glass in a special way.

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Marika & Sandro Sperk: In principle, wine has always been a family affair and thus a formative part of our lives. We also feel a strong connection to our homeland. During our professional training in Geisenheim, we recognised the high value of the Saale-Unstrut wine region and our small family winery. Gleina is a diamond in the rough and we see it as our task to further develop the winery and the vineyards through new ideas - with family ties that support us in the process.

VDP: Do you have role models or mentors?

Marika & Sandro Sperk: By nature, we are very curious and enjoy moving forward. However, for every innovation of our own, we also need inspiration. Through the cooperation and constructive exchange with our colleagues from Breitengrad51 over the past years, we have received many impulses and have been able to further sharpen our profile.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Marika Sperk: The careful further development of the winery. In the next few years, this will primarily involve the renovation of the 4-side farm in Gleina and the preservation and promotion of the steep terrace culture in the Saale-Unstrut region.

VDP: Why should people still visit your winery?

Sandro Sperk: Viticulture, culture and history are certainly the most formative building blocks of the Saale-Unstrut region. They are very multifaceted and tangible everywhere. But it is not only that. For us, it is rather the small things that make this region an exciting place. These include, among other things, the special punch of people, the diverse winegrowing businesses or the varied nature, which you should definitely get to know.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Marika Sperk: For us, both belong inseparably together. We like to rely on the tried and tested and experience of the two previous generations and combine these with new ideas and technologies.

Domaine Schoenheitz is located in the valley of Munster, where the famous Munster Cheese come from, south of Colmar.

We were hosted by Adrien Schoenheitz, who I had met and arranged with the tour before the covid period at a winemaker dinner Northern Virginia.

Adrien toured with us the wine cellar before sitting down in the tasting room for a tasting. At the end of the wine tasting we were served some Munster cheese and a Gugelhupf.

Gugelhupf is a yeasted cake dotted with raisins that’s baked in a tall, creased, circular mold with a circular hole in the middle.  The names comes from the old German words gugel (“hood” or “bonnet”) and hupf (“hop” or “jump”).  It is thought that the name refers to the shape of the cake and the rising (or “jumping”) action of the yeast.  It’s a very old, traditional cake that is especially popular in Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria.

Domaine Schoenheitz

Vines have grown in this region of Alsace since medieval times.

In the 1970s, Henri Schoenheitz, passionate about history and love of this land where he was born, undertakes to give new life to this beautiful vineyard, whose legacy was almost forgotten. Slowly, while this is still a mixed farming region, he redraws the original contours of the Wihr-au-Val vineyards and clears and replants the steep hillsides. In 1980, Henri Schoenheitz and his wife Dominque, graduates in viticulture and oenology, vinified their first vintage.

Today they cultivate 45 acres of vineyards which are entirely concentrated on the steep slopes of the magnificent Valley of Munster, at the beginning of the Vosges Mountains and are the highest vineyards in Alsace. The slopes are so steep that using machinery is impossible and everything has to be worked by hand. Granitic soils and extreme conditions of vine growing develop pure and great expression of the noble grape varieties of Alsace.

The Schoenheitz follow a sustainable agriculture respectful to the environment: minimizing the pollution of waters, air and soil, preserving and supporting the long-term balance of soil, planting natural grass between the rows, using no chemical fertilizers, limiting all treatments to those strictly necessary, a strict selection on the vine, and considering the carbon footprint.

Germany's Weingut Künstler #2 on James Suckling's List of the Top 100 Wines of the World (2022)

James Suckling has released his annual list of the Top 100 Wines of the World. See here.

Interestingly, the #2 on this list - covering the whole world - is a white wine from Germany, the 2021 Weingut Künstler, Riesling, Hölle GG.

Even more interestingly, it is not a fruity-sweet Kabinett, Spätlese or Auslese wine, for which the nation has long been famous, but a, ultra-premium dry Riesling.

In fact, 10 of Suckling's Top 100 Wines of the World 2022 are white wines from Germany and all, except for one wine, are ultra-premium dry wines. Even the only wine from the Mosel on the list is not a fruity-sweet or noble-sweet wine, but an ultra-premium wine.

This "...says so much about the radical transformation German wine has undergone during recent years and about what makes high-end offerings from the country such a great choice today" writes Senior Editor Stuart Pigott.

And he goes on: "At first these new substantial dry wines looked pretty radical, but as the 1990s progressed the trend away from light-bodied wines with obvious unfermented grape sweetness toward serious dry wines took hold in Germany. Together with the achievements of winemakers like Kunstler, that laid the foundations for the German wines of the 21st century.

This ... showcases the fruits of this transformation and celebrates the way most high-end German white wines remain excellent value for money. The contrast to the often astronomical prices for the white wines of Burgundy could hardly be more extreme. In Germany, the Holle GG 2021 typically costs just under 40 euros, but there are a bunch of places around Planet Wine where it won’t cost you much more than that. Yet it is a world-class dry white!"

Weingut Künstler

Here is a posting on schiller-wine about Weingut Künstler, which I released 3 years ago: Weingut Franz Kuenstler, Hochheim, Rheingau, Joins Terry Theise Portfolio, USA/Germany

Picture: Gunter Kuenstler and Christian G.E. Schiller at Restaurant Kronenschloesschen in the Rheingau (2013)

Last year, at one of the larger wine tastings in Germany, Gunter Kuenstler, Weingut Franz Kuenstler in Hochheim, Rheingau, told me that he was in the process of changing his American importer. He had already terminated the contract and was looking for a new importer. We talked a bit about his motives and options. This year, at the Weinboerse in Mainz, Gunter told me that he had decided to join the portfolio of Terry Theise.

Picture: Christian G.E. Schiller at Weingut Kuenstler in Hochheim (2013)

The German Terry Theise Portfolio

Terry Theise is one of the leading importers, if not the leading importer of German wine in America. He has a large portfolio, comprising 40 German winemakers or so, including Doennhoff, Kruger-Rumpf, Diel, Selbach-Oster, Mueller-Catoir, Von Winning, to name a few.

Among the vast number of his followers, he has gained something like a cult status. He publishes a thick catalogue once a year with extensive comments. In addition to the compendium of exciting wine reviews, the Terry Theise’s annual catalogue is a very good introduction to German wine, both to the basics and to the current trends and issues.

Pictures: The late Franz Kuenstler with Annette Schiller at a Weinfreundeskreis Hochheim Tasting (2009)

His wines are imported by Michael Skurnik, an importer and distributor of fine wines based in Syosset, New York. Terry also imports Austrian wine and Champagnes, including excellent grower Champagnes.

Picture: Annette and Christian G.E. Schiller with Gunter Kuenstler at Weingut Franz Kuenstler (2009)

If you want to learn more about Terry, the Washington Post carried an excellent article about him some time ago. See here.

2008 James Beard Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional
2005 Food & Wine Magazine Importer of the Year

A few comments on the German Portfolio of Terry Theise: First, there are no red wines, although they now account for 1/3 of the German wine output. Terry is clearly focusing on Germany’s white wines. Second, nor have I seen a category for sparkling wines; for sparklers, you have to go to his excellent portfolio of Champagnes, including many grower Champagnes. Third, Terry is known for having a preference for sweet-style wines, as far as German white wines are concerned, although his portfolio also includes dry wines. Remember, Terry also imports Austrian white wines and they are all dry. Fourth, his portfolio does not include any noble-sweet wines (Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, Eiswein).

Weingut Franz Kuenstler

Weingut Franz Kuenstler is one of Germany’s world class wine producers. It has 5 F’s (out of 5) in the Feinschmecker WeinGuide ranking. The Wine Estate is currently run by Gunter Kuenstler, who took over from his father Franz a number of years ago. Basically, until the late 1980s Franz was in charge and from the early 1990s on, the Kuenstler wines were made by Gunter. Before founding his own winery in 1965, Franz Kuenstler worked for other wineries in Hochheim for 15 years.

Pictures: Gunter Kuenstler and Gregor Breuer at Weinboerse in Mainz, Germany (2014). See also: 2014 Weinboerse in Mainz– The VDP Producers of the 2014 ombiasy Germany North Tour

The wine growing tradition of the Künstler family can be traced back to Southern Moravia in 1648. After the Second World War, the Künstlers had to leave their home in what is now the Czech Republic and the head of the family, Franz Künstler, laid the foundations in Hochheim for what was to become one of the most successful family businesses in the Rheingau.

I remember very well the small row house in Hochheim that was the initial home of the Kuenstler winery. And I remember very well the wonderful tastings we had at the Kuenstler estate. All my life I have been buying Kuenstler wines and there is quite a number of Kuenstler bottles in my wine cellar in McLean, Virginia.

Gunter Künstler bought the Geheimrat Aschrott'sche Erben wine estate in Hochheim in 1996 and in doing so acquired a major share in the very best vineyard locations in Hochheim (12 hectares). A few years ago, as another giant leap, the Kuenstler estate moved into the former Burgeff Sektkellerei, just at the entrance of Hochheim, when you come from Mainz. It is very impressive.

Pictures: Annette and Monika Kuenstler (2013)

Most recently, Gunter Kuenstler started a cooperation with a winemaker in Ruedesheim and began to offer wines from vineyards in Ruedesheim. This cooperation, however, is coming to an end. In the future, you will not see any wines from Ruedesheim in the Kuenstler portfolio.

Picture: Annette and Gunter Kuenstler in Wiesbaden (2013)

The vineyard area totals 37 hectares in the Domdechaney, Herrnberg, Hölle, Kirchenstück, Reichestal, Stein and Stielweg (Hochheim) as well as Weiß Erd (Kostheim), excluding vineyards in Ruedesheim. Riesling accounts for the bulk of it (29 hectares) but there is also Spätburgunder, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

After lunch at Pinasse Café, Cap Ferret, with a gorgeous view over the bay, the oyster farms, the village of Arcachon, and the Dunes de Pilat, the largest sand dune in Europe, in the distance

See: Lunch at Pinasse Café, Cap Ferret, at the Bassin d'Arcachon - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

we drove on the small strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the Bassin d'Arcachon to the North (with Pauillac being the final destination) and stopped twice.

First, we stopped shortly after Cap Ferret and went to the beach of the Atlantic Ocean.

Second, after a few miles, we stopped at L'Herbe for a visit of an oyster farmer and an oyster tasting. Unfortunately, the rendezvous with the oyster farmer did not take place. Instead, we walked around in L'Herbe and sat down at La Baraque à Huîtres and had some fresh oysters and white wine.

L'Herbe - André Rebsomen (1870 - 1963)

".… we arrive at L’Herbe, the first of the picturesque little fishing and oyster farming villages that we will encounter on our way. We will notice in the middle of the small huts, old pontoons which serve as henhouses, bonfires or even dwellings and which look like stranded whales. In the streets of this peculiar hamlet grow trellises laden with grapes or various plants with bright flowers. If you want to enjoy a superb view of the Basin, you will climb the low dune which dominates it.”

Almost 100 years later, the description still fits. Not much has changed and you feel that the time stands still here.

Sachsen

(London Wine Competition)

Saxony, the third-smallest German wine region, is primarily located along the banks of the Elbe River. It is also one of only two German wine regions located within the boundaries of former East Germany. Officially located within the German federal state of Saxony, this wine region is sometimes referred to as “the Elbe Valley.”

Geographically, Saxony is located in southeastern Germany, near the border with the Czech Republic. It has a relatively temperate climate (especially for Germany), thanks primarily to the moderating influence of the Elbe. In terms of soil quality for wine grapes, Saxony is most similar to Austria’s Wachau region. The microclimate, however, is decidedly northern, and that has largely dictated which grape varietals to plant along the hillsides of the Elbe Valley.

While Riesling is a popular white grape varietal in Saxony, it is not the most popular. That honor goes to Müller-Thurgau, which accounts for 18.4% of all wine production, as compared to 14.5% for Riesling. Other popular grape varietals include Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), at 11.9%, and Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), at 8.1%. Nearly all wines (90%) from this region are characterized and labeled as dry wines.

The winemaking tradition in Saxony dates back to 1161, when winemakers gathered in the city of Meissen. For nearly 1,000 years, then, the wine has been part of the unique cultural and socio-economic life of Saxony. Wines from this region might not be well known internationally, but they have a ready domestic market for German wine drinkers who are fans of Riesling and Müller-Thurgau wines.

Tasting at Domaine de la Solitude in Châteauneuf-du Pape with Owner/ Winemaker Florent Lançon - Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

We visited Domaine de la Solitude in Châteauneuf-du Pape. Although we had planned a more substantial visit of Domaine de la Solitude, because of the covid situation, the people of Domaine de la Solitude limited the visit to a tasting-only visit in the courtyard of the estate.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was the first estate we visited in the world-famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region over a period of 2 days.

In the 13th century, during their stay in Avignon, the Popes – especially Pope John XXII- built a papal summer castle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They found out that the area had exceptional soils, and they established vineyards on the slopes surrounding the summer palace.

I found a nice article in the Los Angeles Time: “Popes throughout history have liked their juice, and when the papal sea moved to Avignon in the 13th century, that juice was Châteauneuf-du-Pape ("the pope's new castle") made from grapes grown nearby in the Southern Rhône. The castle is a ruin now, the papal court long gone back to Rome, but the wines that bear the pope's coat of arms emblazoned on the bottles are still produced more or less according to the long-standing recipe. Not every winemaker uses all 13 of the grapes in the prescribed blend, though.”

The wines grow on a soil that is a mixture of large quartz stones (galets roulés) and sandy red clay. The large sun-warmed galets roulés reflect the sunlight and diffuse a gentle, provençal heat that helps the grapes to mature and their juice to concentrate.

A very strong southern wind - the Mistral - whips up through the Rhône valley from the Mediterranean Sea and creates a welcome cooling effect, since the region can be pretty hot and dry.

With more than 8,000 acres under vine, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest appellation in the Rhône. It was the first wine region in France to gain AOC (today AOP) status in 1923.

Domaine de La Solitude

Domaine de La Solitude belongs to one of the most ancient families native to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

This classic domaine, owned by the Lançon family, dates back to 1535.

The first member of the family came from Italy in 1264 to serve the Pope in Avignon. His name was Barberini - the name today of the special cuvées.

Over the centuries, the Lançons had two Bishops and even one Pope in their family. The three hats on the label refer to this. The medal on the label refers to a medal that one family member received from Napoleon after the battle of Waterloo. The three bees on the label is a family crest from the Middle Ages.

Today, Florent Lançon is in charge of the domaine. It is a large, 92 acres, property. The regular cuvée of the Domaine de La Solitude is a very traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Barberini and Réserve Secrète are more modern-style Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines.

20 acres are planted with white varieties: 30% Roussanne, 50% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette and 5% Bourboulenc. 75 acres are planeted with red varities: 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault and 10% other. 11.00 am Departure.

History

Roman era

The site of Domaine Solitude was occupied as far back as the Gallo-Roman period, as evidenced by the presence of coins from the time.

1264
François Barberini, the first family member to arrive from Italy to the region, is born. He went on to spend time living in Provence as well as the region.

1400s
The Domaine Solitude family made Châteauneuf-du-Pape their home in the 15th century, making them one of the oldest families in the region.

1604
Jean Barberini changes his name to Barberin in order to sound more French. Later, his daughter marries vineyard owner Claude Martin and so the winemaking dynasty begins.

1623-1644
François’ ancestor, Maffeo Barberini, serves as the Pope in Rome under the name Urban VIII. Other family members go on to become Cardinals before settling in Avignon.

La Solitude labels today feature three hats, signifying the two bishops and a Pope in the family’s history.

Middle-Ages
Current wine labels exhibit a number of other links to the family’s history including three bees, a reference to the family in the Middle-Ages.

1815
Another of the family’s ancestors is awarded a medal by Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo, the medal still features on labels today, giving another nod to the family’s history on current bottles.

1970s
Michel and Jean Lançon begin working at the Domaine under the guidance of their father, Pierre Lançon.

1980s
Following time working under Pierre’s expert instruction, Michel and Jean take over the management of the Domaine.

1999
Jean and Michel begin creating Prestige Cuvee wines to showcase the very best of the vineyards and region.

Today…

Florent Lançon, Michel’s son, now manages the day to day running of La Solitude. His focus is on a perfect balance of tradition and continuous improvement, and he is passionate about innovation. His range of wines includes both traditional styles and more modern interpretations. Careful attention is paid in the vineyard, where the harvest is carried out by hand, and only the best grapes are carefully selected. No fertilisers are used and the vineyards are farmed sustainably.

Florent also balances tradition and innovation in the winery, where tulip-shaped concrete tanks are now used alongside more familiar oak and stainless steel. He believes that using a blend of grapes creates a longer lived wine and expertly utilises the particular strengths of each grape variety to create wines with poise and complexity.

The Eichelmann WeinGuide Deutschland/ Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine is one of Germany's leading wine guides. The Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine 2023 was released in late 2022.

Picture: Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine 2023

The Eichelmann guide uses stars to rate winemakers. The best producers get 5 stars in the Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine.

Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine 2022: 5/5 Stars

36 producers received the maximum of 5 out of 5 stars in the Eichelmann Deutschlands Weine 2022 (Weltklasse/ world class).

Interestingly, the list of winemakers from Baden is relatively long in the Eichelmann ranking and the list of winemakers from the Pfalz extremely short. The following wine regions do not appear in the list below, i.e. there is no winemaker with 5 stars: Mittelrhein, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Hessische Bergstrasse.

Further, elsewhere regarded as superstars, Weingut Zilliken, Weingut JJ Prüm and Weingut Egon Müller from the Mosel region, known for their ultra-premium sweet-style wines, are not in Eichelmann's 5 stars group of winemakers.

Lunch in Wihr-au-Val/Alsace at the 1-star Michelin Restaurant La Nouvelle Auberge, with Chef Bernard Leray, Directeur de Salle Martine Leray and Sommelière Charlotte Leray - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

After spending the morning at a most interesting winery in Wihr-au-Val:

Cellar Tour and Tasting with Adrien Schoenheitz at Vins Schoenheitz in Wihr-au-Val, Alsace - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

we had lunch in Wihr-au-Val at a most interesting restaurant: The 1-star Michelin Restaurant La Nouvelle Auberge of Chef Bernard Leray, Directeur de Salle Martine Leray and Sommelière Charlotte Leray.

The Nouvelle Auberge is elegant and endearing at the same time. The owners offer a delicious culinary duet. The gastronomy upstairs offers classic recipes with modern interpretation perfectly prepared by Chef Bernard Leray.

La Nouvelle Auberge

Michelin (1 Star)

On the doorstep of Munster valley, this “new inn” is a fully refurbished former posthouse. On the ground-floor, an Alsace bistro regales diners on weekday lunchtimes. Upstairs, the gourmet restaurant sports a suitably rustic, half-timbered dining room.

Bernard Leray, who hails from Rennes in Brittany, has taken to Alsace like a stork to its nest. After honing his skills at Bernard Loiseau, Leray puts a delicate new spin on local produce. All his dishes demonstrate his painstaking work and consummate technique, such as Bresse poultry, a gutsy stock of black truffles and melt-in-the-mouth vegetable pie.

Gault&Millau (15/20)

The gourmet restaurant La Nouvelle Auberge is located on the second floor of a beautiful quaint building in Wihr-au-Val, and is not to be confused with the typical Alsatian brasserie on the building’s first floor that serves regional specialties.

La Nouvelle Auberge’s head chef Bernard Leray delights guests with his modern take on Alsatian-French cuisine. He tastefully combines traditional and innovative elements to prepare inventive dishes full of surprising, subtle flavors that use fresh, seasonal ingredients! One of La Nouvelle Auberge’s best features is its child-friendliness, with the restaurant offering a special kids’ menu, highchairs, toys, and a playground for its youngest visitors.

elitetravelor.com

La Nouvelle Auberge is a contemporary restaurant in Wihr-au-Val, France. Bernard Leray has earned one Michelin Star with a unique take on French cuisine. The restaurant sources a large proportion of its ingredients locally. The restaurant's style can be described as country/artisan. Charlotte Leray oversees the wine list and food pairings. The restaurant offers a tasting menu.

Gault Milla - Charlotte Leray

Winery Tour and Vertical Tasting at Château Cos d’Estournel, 2ième Grand Cru Classé, Appellation Saint-Estèphe - Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France

Château Cos d’Estournel was the first left bank château we visited on the Bordeaux Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours, France. The visit was quite extensive - lasting 3 hours - and intensive - including a verticale tasting of 5 vintages.

We started out with a general introduction in front of the château. We then went to a vineyard, where we also could see the set-up for the fruit reception during harvest. We then toured the tank and the barrel cellars. The visit ended with a verticale tasting of 5 vintages.

From Château Cos d’Estournel we went to Maison Cos d’Estournel, a Michelin-rated restaurant belonging to Château Cos d’Estournel, were we had lunch.

Château Cos d’Estournel boasts of one of most impressive architecture in all of Médoc.

In 1791 Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited holdings in Saint-Estèphe upon the death of his father. Over the years he added more land to his holdings, and bought several vineyards in the commune of Saint-Estèphe. The potential of Saint-Estèphe in those days was not fully recognized compared with the appellations further south (Pauillac, Saint-Julien, etc.), which were already fully exploited. Louis Gaspard was enthusiastic about his wines but there was no reputation for this appellation at this time. He ran into financial difficulties and the estate was acquired by a debt collector in 1811. He remained on board as manager and was able to buy it back in 1821. In the meantime recognition for Saint-Estèphe wines was on the rise and in the decades that followed Louis Gaspard was able to buy the best plots off neighboring estates.

Settled in, and seemingly financially secure, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel started to build new cellars and a “châteaux”. His taste reflected his many travels to the Orient, and he constructed tall pagodas, and an imposing arch decorated with lions and unicorns. The doorway was sent over from the Palace of Zanzibar. In 1852 – one year before his death - he again had to sell and the châteaux changed hands many times since then.

Current owner is industrialist Michel Reybier, who acquired Cos d’Estournel in 2000. He kept Jean-Guillaume Prats, descendant of the Ginestet-Prats family, owners from 1917 till 1998, as Managing Director. He was a divisive figure. He was one of the influential persons in Bordeaux pushing for a “new” Bordeaux style.

From 2013 to 2017 Aymeric de Gironde was Managing Director. He shifted to a fresher, more elegant and poised style of the Cos d’Estournel wines.

Today owner Michel Reybier manages the estate himself and winemaking is in the hands of Dominique Arangoïts who also has a keen awareness of balance and freshness.

Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, and I have met 5 of these 7 producers at various occasions over the past years, often at their estate during a Germany wine tour by ombiasy WineTours, which is owned and run by Annette Schiller and based in Washington DC, USA.

Württemberg

(London Wine Competition)

Located in southwestern Germany, Württemberg is officially part of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. However, in terms of wine classification, Baden and Württemberg are considered to be two separate and distinct wine regions. Württemberg is the fourth-largest of Germany’s 13 wine regions.

The real distinguishing point about Württemberg is that it is primarily known for its red, not white, wines. In fact, red wines account for 71% of all wine production in this German wine region. Interestingly, these red wines do not include the most popular red varietals grown throughout Europe, either.

For example, by far the most popular red grape varietal is Trollinger, accounting for 21.2% of all wine production. These grapes produce a light red, slightly sweet wine that is uncommon even for Germany. In fact, 98% of all Trollinger grape production takes place within Württemberg. Other popular grape varietals grown in this region include Schwarzriesling (15.1%), Lemberger (13.9%) and Spatburgunder (11.1%). As might be expected, Riesling production is also important in this region, accounting for 18.1% of all wine production.

Another distinguishing feature of Württemberg wine production is that many of the most popular wines are made by winemaking cooperatives. There are nearly 70 cooperatives, accounting for nearly 75% of all production. The most popular and famous vineyards are located along the Neckar River and its four tributaries. There are many vineyards located near Stuttgart, and also near Lake Constance.

As in other parts of Germany, steep terraced vineyards are the norm along river banks of the Neckar. One of the most famous vineyards is Cannstatter Zuckerle, located near Stuttgart, which boasts some impressive steep terraced vineyards.

We spent half a day at Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Hélène Jaume was our host.

First, we toured with her the vineyards and the wine cellar of Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume.

Second, Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume has started to offer wine-pairing lunches. We sat down in the dining room of Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume and had a 5-course lunch with 9 wines covering the whole Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume. The lunch will be covered in a separate posting.

Domaine Grand Veneur/ Maison Alain Jaume

The Jaume family first planted vines in 1826. Five generations later, in 1979, Alain Jaume took over and in 1996 he created Domaine Grand Veneur to bottle and age the wines under their own label.

Today his two sons, Sébastien and Christophe, and his daughter Hélène also work at the estate, hence the 6th generation is maintaining the traditions that made the estate one of the greatest in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The family produces estate wines and négociant wines.

The estate wines comprise 225 acres: “Domaine Grand Veneur” (15 acres Châteauneuf-du-Pape), “Château Mazane” (35 acres in Vacqueyras), “Clos de Sixte” (80 acres in Lirac), and “Domaine de la Grangette Saint Joseph (95 acres in the Vaucluse, Côte de Rhône appellation. These estate wines are farmed with certified organic agricultural practices.

The négociant wines are labeled “Alain Jaume” and are from purchased grapes and wines from winegrowing partners in several Southern Rhône appellations. The estate wines of the Jaume family are regarded as belonging to the upper echelon of Southern Rhône wines. The same attention to detail is paid to the winemaking of the négociant wines. The négociant wines are simply great wines at great prices with strength, complexity, and finesse.

The Jaume family holds five brands. The acquisition of Domaine de la Grangette Saint Joseph in 2015 took the total area owned by Alain Jaume to over 200 hectares:

Domaine Grand Veneur in Châteauneuf du Pape
Domaine du Clos de Sixte in Lirac
Chateau Mazane Vacqueyras
Domaine de la Grangette Saint Joseph at Jonquières in the Vaucluse (Côte du Rhône Appellation)
Alain Jaume (Négociant)

Hélène Jaume in Washington DC

Hélène regularly comes to Washington DC and we have met her a couple of times in Washington DC.

New Year`s Eve and New Year's Day 2022/23 the Washington DC Area

Initially, Annette and I had planned to fly to Frankfurt on December 2022, but for a number of reasons we pushed the flight back into late January 2023. Thus, we spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in the Washington DC area.

New Year's Eve

Johanna, Viggo and Leo

Johanna, Viggo and Leo spent the night of December 30/31 with us in McLean and were picked up by Dorothea at 4pm.

Dinner

With the New Year's Eve Party invitation for 9pm and only snacks expecting (which was a mistake), Fuad and Maureen joined Annette and me for a pre-party dinner at our house.

The highlight was a 1983 Château Talbot Saint-Julien 4ème Grand Cru Classé. I would rate it at 91/100. The 1982 sells at around US$400 accdoring to wine-searcher and the 1987 at about half the price. The wine-searcher does not provide a price for the vintage we had.

To finish, we had a sip from the 1952 Armagnac Laubade, which also was a treat.

An then off to the Castellis.

New Year's Eve Party hosted by Stephanie and Brian Castelli

Contrary to what had been expected, there was much more than small bites - Stephanie and Brian had prepared a full dinner. And, as expected, the food was delicious. In terms of drinks, Champagne dominated the event.

Frankfurt Party

As mentioned, we missed the party at our residence in Frankfurt.

    oder
    Das Haus, das Freunde macht!
    Pst!
    Komm mal näher!
    Noch n bisschen!
Halt!
    Wo sonst!
Junior hab ich gleich ne Challenge gegeben: Such den Pool!
    What??
Ach, was frag ich so blöd... Raucherbalkon! Klar!
Also Treppe ruff, Treppe wieder nunder!
    What a FUCKING COOL PARTY!
    Ever!
Unfassbier!

Ja frag doch net so blöd, wo!

New Year's Day in Lovettsville Hosted by Jennifer and Rex

On New Year's Day, we drove about an hour to Lovettsville for the New Year's Day party hosted by Jennifer and Rex. For me, the stand-outs were the 20 years-plus old Brunello di Montalcino and the Barolo. I also enjoyed the 3 Oregon Pinot Noirs. In terms of food, I loved the very tasty pulled pork.

Tasting with Rémy Gresser at Domaine Rémy Gresser in Andlau, Alsace - Germany-South and Alsace 2022 by ombiasy WineTours

The tasting at Domaine Rémy Gresser in Andlau with Rémy Gresser was our last stop in Alsace. Following the tasting we drove up to the north to visit estates in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions.

Andlau is halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar at the foot of the Sainte Odile mountain. The vineyard area is thinning out in this northern Alsatian wine region. However the prestigious slopes of the Sainte Odile hill produce first-class wines.

Domaine Rémy Gresser

The Domaine Rémy Gresser can look back on a long history. As early as 1520, Thiébaut Gresser is mentioned in the Andlau annals as the winegrower and magistrate of Andlau, which proves the family's connection to viticulture. Since then, the domain has passed from father to son.

Rémy Gresser now cultivates 35 acres of vineyards with extremely complex geology. Rémy produces exciting wines of great purity and expression due to the soil from which they come.

His three Grands Crus, for example, are very different in style.

Wiebelsberg is the largest Grand Cru, and its sandstone gives very floral, lively Rieslings.

Moenchberg, on granite and fossil limestone, produces succulent wines.

And Kastelberg, a unique terroir on Steige schist, produces some of Alsace’s most exciting
wines, loaded with minerality.

His other crus are Brandhof (limestone), Duttenberg (clay-marne) and Kritt (gravelly soil).

Tradition and nature are very important to him, hence long ago he converted to biodynamic winemaking practices. Rémy creates his wines in a dry style. His wines are extremely terroir-expressive and elegant.

Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

Austria is such a beautiful and charming country, no matter where you go.

We start the tour in Imperial Vienna and will discover that Vienna is not only the breathtakingly beautiful capital of Austria, but also a wine region that is famous for its “Heurige” and “Gemischter Satz” (field blend).

We then travel south to the Carnuntum region, where wine was made more than 2000 years ago and is famous for its red wine produced from the Zweigelt grape.

The Burgenland is the easternmost Austrian wine region and shares a 240 miles long border with Hungary. Burgenland’s history is closely intertwined with that of Hungary and we sometimes cross borders to reach our next destination. More and more red wine is produced in Burgenland where “Zweigelt” and the late-ripening “Blaufränkisch” grapes are kings in some appellations.

The southernmost wine region – Steiermark, Styria – is a mountain region. Fantastic Sauvignon-Blanc is king here. In a recent blind tasting in London of Sauvignon-Blanc wines from around the world, an Austrian wine won the first spot. The vineyards in this magnificent, hilly landscape alternate with forests, idyllic orchards, and flower meadows.

We will spend one night in Graz, where we will attend a performance at the beautiful Opera House. Graz is Austria’s second largest city and capital of the Steiermark region. The historic Renaissance and Baroque city center of Graz is one of the best preserved in Central Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On our way to Lower Austria we stop in Eisenstadt, the capital of the Burgenland region west of lake Neusiedl. Here we visit the famous Eszerházy palace and the house where composer Joseph Haydn lived.

We finish the tour with another highlight: the Wachau, the Kremstal, and the Kamptal, appellations in the romantic

Lower Austria wine region right on the banks of the Danube river where we do an in-depth exploration of Austria’s most widespread variety “Grüner Veltliner”.

  • We will visit a total of 20 wineries in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) with its eight subregions, in the Burgenland with its six subregions, in the Steiermark (Styria) with its three subregions and of course in Vienna, Austria’s capital that is not just a city but also a wine region.
  • We will get intimate insights into a selection of Austria’s best of the best wineries, normally not open to visitors.
  • We will learn how to read the label on Austrian wine bottles.
  • We will get to know the classification of Austrian wines including the relatively new DAC classification.
  • We will learn about Austrian grape varietals.
  • We will enjoy typical Austrian restaurants with lots of "Gemütlichkeit".
  • We will enjoy exquisite, refined meals at top rated restaurants in Austria.
  • We will experience the charm of Austrian hospitality.
  • We will journey through the turbulent and opulent history of the Austrian empire.
  • We will travel through stunningly beautiful viticultural landscapes.
  • We will get the "inside track".

Wine Country Austria

Small but beautiful - that is Austrian viticulture on the global stage. Austria is, with France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, considered one of the best wine-growing countries in Europe.

With 112,500 acres under vine, the wine production is considerably lower than in the other four countries. Slightly smaller than the US State of Maine, Austria is a landlocked country in the Eastern part of central Europe. It borders Slovenia to the south, Italy to the south-west, Switzerland to the west, Germany to the north-west, Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the north-east, and Hungary to the east.

Austria can be divided into two parts: the ski lovers paradise in the westerly part of the country with the 12,500 feet high Großglockner being the highest mountain in the Austrian Alpine region. The moderately hilly, sometimes flat easterly part is the wine lovers paradise.

There are four main wine regions, going from north to south: Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) with 70,000 acres, Wien (Vienna) with 1,600 acres, Burgenland with 33,500 acres, and Steiermark (Styria) with 11,500 acres.

Wine has been cultivated in Austria for more than two thousand years. The monastery Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria was one of the earliest wine producing estates and is the oldest viticultural college and research center in the world. Austria’s centuries-old winegrowing tradition, the strive for top quality, its 40 approved grape varieties - among them brilliant indigenous varieties - , ideal climatic and geological conditions lets Austrian wine do one thing better than a lot of other wines: express history, site, climate, and vintage.

Come along and explore Austria with us. You will discover the charming and historically fascinating Austrian culture, the wide variety of styles, aromas, and terroir of Austrian wines.
