Announcement: Wine Tour to Iconic German Wine Regions: Rhein and Mosel - September 2024 Germany by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller

Dear wine friends,

A fantastic wine tour is coming up in early September: we are travelling to the iconic Rhein and Mosel regions and will explore in depths the king of white grapes: Riesling.

Join me as we visit world-famous wineries, meet well-known wine personalities, and taste many of the wines you read about.

This year we start in Wiesbaden, a historic spa town famous for its hot springs. From there we do a side kick visit to the Rheinhessen wine region and will learn that Germany also produces extraordinary Pinot Noir (yes: Germany is the number 3 producer of Pinot Noir world-wide and of course number 1 producer of Riesling). We spend two days in the Rheingau, tasting our way through the different wine estates and terroirs, continue to the romantic Mittelrhein region where we do a cruise on the Rhein to indulge in the wine world’s most spectacular scenery with medieval villages and castles and ruins crowning the top of the hills like pearls on a string, and vineyards clinging to the rocky steep slopes.

This year we very much focus on the Mosel region. We travel the countless bends of the river from head to toe, from the confluence with the Rhein in Koblenz to the border with Luxembourg, visiting iconic wineries and up-and-coming producers already discovered by importers in the US.

Our final day we spend in the Nahe wine region with its many interpretations of the Riesling grape due to its mosaic of terroir.

You can see the detailed program (my web designer is currently working on putting the correct pictures in) here: https://ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/germany-north/germany-north-itinerary

You also find all information on pricing and signing-up for the tour on the website.

Have a great Sunday and Happy Mother's Day for all mothers out there.

And see you in Wiesbaden!

Cheers
Annette

German Wine Society

German Wine Society members,

I’m very pleased to be able to let you know that the German Wine Society’s National website has now been extensively redesigned and updated to bring it into the 21st Century for German wine!  Please check it out - the address remains the same as before, germanwinesociety.org .  Before this, the National website had not been redesigned or significantly updated since the early 2000s, although I had made some corrections to it last year after becoming Secretary for information that was clearly out of date, such as the lists of chapters and National leadership.  But more was needed, and the National leadership agreed to hire a website developer, Ogrelogic, with which I worked to both greatly improve the appearance of the website, and bring all its content up to date with respect to wine regions, grapes, recent National events, and the new German wine law.  In this project, National Director Christian Schiller was also of great assistance, permitting us to use pictures from his wine blog and also authorizing us to use an article about the new German wine law that appears on his blog.   National President Beth Sheligo has been very supportive throughout the project as well, reaching out as needed to our web hosting service and reviewing content.

One important feature of the new website that should be of interest to all chapter and at-large members is the Events page, where we plan going forward to post new event announcements from each of the chapters as these are received.   The Washington, D.C. Capital Chapter continues to maintain its own website as well,  germanwinesocietydc.org ,  and registration and payment for Capital Chapter events will continue to take place through that website.   Other chapters have their own arrangements for registration and payment for events, as indicated in their event notices.  But the new National website will now for the first time allow GWS members to see all of the recent events of the chapters in one place, and will provide another way for the smaller chapters that do not maintain their own websites to reach out to new members and guests beyond those who already receive their email notices.  We hope that this will also provide an incentive for the formation of new chapters who need to find members in their areas.

We hope you all agree that the redesigned National website represents a major step forward for the GWS, and will help to bring our chapters closer as one Society, along with spreading more knowledge and information about the German wines we love!

Château Malartic Lagravière - Grand Cru Classé de Graves: Wine Dinner at Black Salt in Washington DC, with Guillaume Virsolvy and Panos Kakaviatos

In May 2024, Panos Kakaviatos led 2 winemaker dinners in Washington DC, one with Château Brane Cantenac and one with Château Malartic Lagravière, both #worldclass Bordeaux producers. Annette and I attended both dinners.

For the first dinner, see: Château Brane Cantenac, Deuxieme Grand Cru Classe en 1855, Margaux: Winemaker Dinner with Owner Henri Lurton at The Henri in Washington DC, led by Panos Kakaviatos

The Château Malartic Lagravière dinner took place at Black Salt, next to MacArthur Beverages. Brand ambassador Guillaume Virsolvy represented the estate. This was another memorable Bordeaux dinner with Panos Kakaviatos in Washington DC, this time with 14 vintages of the grand vin of Château Malartic-Lagravière - Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Bravo Panos.

We visited Château Malartic Lagravière during the Bordeaux Tour 2017 by ombiasy WineTours and had lunch at the estate.

The next Bordeaux Tour by ombiasy WineTours led by Annette Schiller is scheduled for May 2025.

Invitation by Panos Kakaviatos: Part Two: Château Malartic Lagravière, Pessac-Léognan (Cru Classé de Graves) on Monday 13 May at Black Salt, Washington D.C.

Château Malartic Lagraviere is classified in Graves for both the dry white and red wines it produces, similar to Domaine de Chevalier.

Like Brane, Château Malartic Lagravière has improved quality recently, especially since hiring Eric Boissenot, a consultant known to favor elegance: both the reds and whites have an added dimension of grace, as you will be able to compare since the estate is generously providing 14 vintages of the grand vin, some in magnum formats, as follows:

The evening will begin at 6:30 pm, Monday evening 13 May at Black Salt restaurant

Rather than bringing Champagne, we will have a meet and greet with Le Comte de Malartic white 2019 as well as Malartic Lagraviere reds 2017 and 2019 to taste.

We will then sit down for a four-course meal to include cheese, with three wines per course. The menu will be determined.

Brand ambassador Guillaume Virsolvy will be joining us.

For the whites, 6 vintages
- MLB20 regular format bottles
- MLB19 regular format bottles
- MLB16 regular format bottles
- MLB14 magnums
- MLB06 magnums
- MLB04 magnums

For the reds, another 6 vintages  (will check on the bottle formats)
- MLR16
- MLR14
- MLR10
- MLR07
- MLR04
- MLR98

Price: $250 per person

I strongly encourage participants to take an Uber or taxi, because there will be plenty of wine ...

Another epic wine dinner in the city @blacksaltdc with wines from my favorite part of the (wine) world, Bordeaux. Twelve vintages (both white & red) plus a couple of bonus bottles @malarticlagraviere and a lovely menu curated for our small group, made for a memorable dinner event. Many thanks @panos_kakaviatos for organizing another successful event! #dinner#winedinner#bordeauxwine#grandcruclasse#frenchwine#finewine#foodiedc#redwine#whitewine#leftbankwines#citydining

Panos Kakaviatos (email)

Dear friends,

I’m at Dulles international airport, just boarding a flight back to “cross the pond”.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in a lovely evening.

Thanks to Guillaume and to Château Malartic Lagraviere for bringing the wines and to Phil for managing their delivery here to Washington D.C.

Thanks to Maria for the bottles prep work and assistance all around.

And thanks to the staff and excellent chef at Black Salt for such a great meal and super service!

Phil had sent a email before with prices for some of the wines, and they are competitively priced.

As well as reflecting the excellence of that vintage, the 2019 both red and white are particularly exciting, reflecting a more refined style, not to mention how yummy the second white wine in 2019 was, what we had at the very beginning.

Cheers, and until next time!

The Return of the German Wine Society (USA) Silver Medallion

$

Carl Willner
National Vice President and Secretary, and Capital Chapter President and Secretary
German Wine Society

German Wine Society members,

many German Wine Society members have our bronze medallions with the ribbons in the colors of the German flag, which any member is entitled to obtain and is worn for festive Society events.   But sometimes you can also see longtime members wearing gold or silver medallions on their ribbons as well.  These medallion colors signify the three classes of German Wine Society membership, as described in our Articles of Incorporation.

The Gold Medallion is available only to graduates of the German Wine Academy, which required travel to Germany for courses that were once offered at the Academy in English.  But the Silver Medallion is not so difficult to obtain.  Under the Articles of Incorporation, it is available to “persons who have considerable knowledge of German wines, based on study and/or professional exposure (but who are not graduates of the German Wine Academy).”  Any Bronze Medallion holders “can progress to the class of Silver Medallion members upon proof of their advanced knowledge of German wines through tastings and/or other examination conducted by Gold Medallion members.”

The German Wine Society still has a limited supply of Silver Medallions available, but our examination for those interested in qualifying for this medallion had been long out of date, with some versions even predating German reunification.

It is time to once again give our members an opportunity to demonstrate their German wine knowledge, and so National Board members Carl Willner and Christian Schiller have collaborated to bring the Silver Medallion examination fully up to date for German wine in the 21st Century, and it has been approved by National President Beth Sheligo, a Gold Medallion holder.  The Silver Medallion examination is a written test, which must be taken under the in-person supervision of an officer of any GWS chapter or a National Board member without use of the Internet or other materials during the exam, and is then sent to be graded by those members of the National Board familiar with the exam’s answers.  President Beth Sheligo will give final approval to all successful candidates, satisfying the requirement in the Articles for examination by Gold Medallion members.  Those interested in taking the examination can request to do so through a chapter officer (or, for at-large members, directly to any National Board member).   Examination forms will not be returned, but the taker of the examination will be advised of the score obtained, and if successful, presented with the Silver Medallion.

It is strongly recommended that members not attempt to take the examination “cold” as it is challenging.  Rather, to prepare for the test, members should familiarize themselves with current information about the GWS, German wines, wine grapes and regions, and the current German wine law, making use of the National website, and the Wines of Germany and VDP websites as well (links to these are available on the National website), as well as other up-to-date sources on German wines and their own wine experience from attending numerous GWS events.  Be cautious about using any older sources to prepare, as much has changed in the world of German wines with the new Wine Law of 2021.  Those who are unsuccessful with the exam and want to try again must wait at least a year before doing so.  We encourage experienced members to demonstrate their wine knowledge, and look forward to welcoming more Silver Medallion members to the German Wine Society!

The German State Department recently drew up a new list of German wines that the 225 diplomatic missions should serve on official occasions.

The list was prepared by a jury of high-ranking employees of the Federal Foreign Office. After an invitation to tender, 420 wines were pre-selected and 59 made it into the final. After a blind tasting, 27 made it onto the order list for embassies and consulates.

This year's range of wines includes 4 sparkling wines, 15 white wines, 4 red wines and 2 rosés, as well as 2 non-alcoholic varieties for the first time. They come from ten different German wine-growing regions and reflect the diversity of flavours in Germany very well.

A supra is a Georgian meal, with an abundance of food, wine and toasts, orchestrated by the tamada - or toastmaster - celebrating life and death with toasts.

I have participated in a number of supras, when Annette and I toured Georgia.

See: Georgia Wine Tour 2019: Discovering the Birthplace of Wine

This time, the supra was in Washington DC at Supra Restaurant, Washington DC's first Georgian restaurant.

The tamada was Mamuka Tsereteli of the Georgian Wine House. The special guest of the supra was Honnef Patrick, Winemaker/ General Manager of Château Mukhrani in Georgia. There was an abundance of food, wine and toasts.

I met Patrick for the first time in Bordeaux, when he was making wine with Count Stefan von Neipperg.

Several years later, on a wine tour in Georgia, we spent an afternoon together at Château Mukhrani, where Patrick has been the General Manager and the Winemaker since 2014.

Now, in Washington DC, where he was spending about a week "to work the market". As for Maryland and Washington DC, the wines of Château Mukhrani are represented by Mamuka Tsereteli/ Georgian Wine House.

I was lucky to show Patrick a bit around in Virginia, where we tasted wines a Stone Tower Winery, Crysalis Vineyards and Boxwood Winery.

Finally, Patrick stayed for a night at our home in McLean, where I introduced Patrick to American oysters. Of course, having spent about a decade in Bordeaux, he knows and loves French oysters. But he had never had American oysters before.

Dear wine friends,

I would like to invite you to join me next week on Tuesday, May 28th  at 7.45 pm at St. Patricks Episcopal Church at 4700 Whitehaven Pky, Washington DC, when I take you on a discovery tour to 5 off-the-beaten-path wine regions in France.

France is the country with the most famous wine regions world-wide. Who does not have heard of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Rhône.

France is also one of the largest wine producing countries world-wide and there are many other, overlooked, overshadowed, undiscovered wine regions that showcase excellent quality and value with their indigenous grapes and unique wine styles.

We will explore wines from 5 French wine regions that don’t get the fame and press coverage but deserve all the recognition in the world.

1. Côte de Toul, Moselle

We start with a rosé wine from the Côte de Toul, part of the Moselle wine region situated west of the Vosges mountains. YES, this is the famous Mosel river that later crosses into Germany and that we all know by the famous German Rieslings.

2. Jura

Jura is a tiny region sandwiched between the Swiss border and the world-famous French region of Burgundy. It is also France’s trending pioneer in sustainable viticulture and natural wine.

3: Corsica

We travel to the Mediterranean cost, take a boat in Toulon and visit the island of Corsica, a beautiful island with white-sandy beaches and spectacular mountains in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. This French region is closer to Italy than it is to France. What’s interesting is even with influences from French and Italy, Corsica’s wines have their own sense of individuality.

4. Cahors

This is Malbec country. Malbec is one of the most popular grapes in the world and often associated with Argentina. BUT: Malbec originates in Cahors, a beautiful region with dramatic landscapes. Cahors is one of the moste underrated wine regions.

5: Lot et Garonne

Lot-et-Garonne is a vast region in South-West France, where you find the oldest vineyards.in France. We taste a wine from the AOP Bergerac sub-region, which straddles along the southern bank of the Dordogene river, which further to the west forms together with the Garonne river the Gironde estuary where the famous Bordeaux appellations are situated.

This is a $30 tasting.

As usual 2 cheeses and baguette from Calvert & Woodley will complement the wines.

Join me on this discovery tour when we taste 1 rosé and 4 red wines.

Annette

WHERE & WHEN WE MEET: The Seminar meets at 7:45PM every Tuesday (except for July, August and the weeks of December 25th and January 1st) at St. Patricks Episcopal Church at 4700 Whitehaven Pky, between Foxhall Road and MacArthur Blvd.

No reservations are required.

GERMANY, Rhein and Mosel tour:

We very much focus on the Mosel region.

You can see the detailed program here: https://ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/germany-north/germany-north-itinerary

There are only two slots left for this tour.

RHÔNE VALLEY

Join us as we explore in detail the wines of the Rhône Valley. The Rhône wine region is one of the most ancient wine growing regions in France and the second largest AOP region in France after Bordeaux. There are 28 appellations,15 red grapes and 12 white grapes to explore, and a long fascinating history starting in the 4th century BC.

We start in vibrant, cool, sophisticated Lyon, the capital of Haut Cuisine. We explore the Northern Rhône where only 5% of all Rhône wines come from but where we have 3 world-famous appellations: Côte Rôtie, Hermitage, and Condrieu.

We follow the eponymous Rhône river south to Avignon, the city that was the seat of the papacy for the better part of the 14th century. On the way south we stay at a wine estate at the foot of the ‘Dentelle de Montmirail’ in the heart of the famous Gigondas, Vacqueyras, appellations to soak in the regions’s natural beauty and to discover some great wines of excellent value.

Parts of the southern Rhône belong to Provence. Here we see olive trees, smell the fragrances of the ‘herbs de Provence’ and enjoy the French ‘savoir vivre’. Besides learning about the southern Rhône wines, we visit iconic historic places such as Arles, the city with the magical light that Impressionist artists masterfully captured in their paintings and where we follow the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh.

Our last days in the Rhône Valley we explore in depth the iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine appellation and will taste dark red, fruity, spicy wines from top wine domaines.   http://www.ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/rhone/rhone-introduction

There are four slots left for this tour.

I wish you a great Memorial Day weekend with family and friends - and of course a fantastic glass of wine to celebrate.

Looking forward to seeing you in Wiesbaden or Lyon! AND: do not hesitate to get in touch with me for any question you may have. I am very happy to talk to you.

Cheers

Annette

2024 Loire by ombiasy Wine Tours, led by Annette Schiller, took place from Sunday, June 9 to Thursday June 20, 2024. The tour started in Nantes and ended in Sancerre.

Annette and I left Washington DC (USA) by plane on June 3, spent 3 nights at our German home in Frankfurt, and continued on June 7 to Nantes by train.

See: Announcement: Loire Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours (Sunday, June 09 - Thursday June 20, 2024)

In Frankfurt, on all three evenings we went to Mainlust Desche Otto, a couple of blocks away from our home, where we enjoyed Apfelwein (Hard Cider) as well as Burgundy reds, Hand Cheese (Handkäses), Grüne Sauce (Green Sauce), Bratkartoffeln (Fried Potatoes) as well as Oysters and Steak Tartare.

Zur Mainlust Desche Otto

The apple wine tavern (Apfelweinwirtschaft) is as distinctive a Frankfurt institution as the Bierkeller is of Munich or the Weinstube of Mainz. Many of the best-known establishments are concentrated in Sachsenhausen, but others are dotted all over the city. They are strongly traditional. They offer hearty local cuisine, usually at moderate prices. Mainlust Desche-Otto is a small and cosy apple wine tavern with a lovely garden, run by Claudia and Louie - in walking distance from where we live in Frankfurt am Main. Claudia and Louie's motto is "hard-core Hessian". They strive for the "not so usual", with delicious local fare with a modern touch, over 150 brandies (Louie's passion) and the Kulturpfuhl Schwanheim Program.

The Landwehrstübchen Restaurant is a little gem in Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt - off the beaten track. It has been in existence since 1953. Last year, it was taken over by the young trio Moritz Schengbiers, Eva Ascher-Pothmanns and Peer Fleischers.

Annette and I enjoyed a wonderful evening there with our friends Christine and Johnny. Annette: I love this place: cosy, homey, small but exquisite wine list, small menu as well: one of the traditional German dishes: Wiener Schnitzel and 4 inventive Fish, Seafood, Vegetarian dishes. Excellently executed.

See: Stopover in Frankfurt: 3 Nights at Zur Mainlust Desche Otto in Frankfurt/ Schwanheim - From Washington DC (USA) to Nantes (France) for 2024 Loire by ombiasy WineTours, led by Annette Schiller

In Paris, we had to transfer from the Gare de L'Est to the Gare de Monteparnasse. Just opposite of the Gare de Monteparnasse is Le Petit Sommelier, which is famous for its amazing wine list. Run and owned by the sommelier Pierre Vila Palleja, who also writes for the t advertises itself as "Restaurant à Vin. Service Nonstop". Our window was too short for lunch but large enough for a glass of wine with cheese. Annette chose a Champagne and I a red Bourgogne.

Gault&Millau's review - 10.5/20

Standard fare, but an astonishing cellar with over a thousand references, just opposite the Montparnasse train station. The brasserie is a popular reference in the neighborhood, with its unchanged decor reinforcing habits. On the menu, to accompany the finest bottles, mayo eggs, escargots de Bourgogne en persillade, grilled octopus a la plancha, fennel confit with orange and smoked paprika, boeuf bourguignon, meats from the Metzger brothers, a baba au rhum agricole ambré.

Decanter - Best for Aged Wine at Low Prices

From the outside, Le Petit Sommelier may look like your average stuffy, white-tablecloth-bearing French restaurant. However, this unassuming restaurant offers much more than meets the eye. Truth be told, many of the spots on our list are located on the Right Bank, as these northerly neighbourhoods tend to be hotter spots for wine drinking. However, Le Petit Sommelier is worth the trek across the river. Located a hop, skip and a jump away from the Gare Montparnasse, this restaurant is home to one of the most epic wine lists in the entire city – and in terms of finding old wine at insane prices, it’s unbeatable.

Although the food is nothing to write home about, the carte des vins promises a night to remember. Home to over 750 references, Le Petit Sommelier’s cellar is laden with back vintages of DRC and classic Loire Valley producers, many of which can be found hovering around the €100 mark. Picks from the United States, Italy and Australia are also widely available. Over 20 wines are available by the glass at all times, with frequent 10 to 15-year-old pours offered for just over €10 a pop. On the food front, expect traditional meat-heavy bistro fare (steak tartare, rib eye, homemade foie gras) served up in a Belle Epoque reminiscent dining room.

Gayot - Le Petit Sommelier Restaurant Review

Just off the Montparnasse train station, this lively brasserie boasts an impressive wine list, thanks to owner Pierre Vila Palleja, who previously worked as a sommelier at Lasserre. Up to 700 vintages are suggested, including foreign items. Chef Nicolas Bouillier, who honed his craft at the now-defunct Christian Le Squer restaurant, Etc., cooks up hearty and creative fare. The menu at €35 offers great value for the money, with such items as sea bream tartare with lemon, cucumber milk and beetroot cream, and the delicious Iberian pork filet and crusty pork chest topped with sweet-and-sour sauce and accompanied by sweet potatoes purée. It’s too bad that the dessert, a commonplace cheesecake perfumed with mango and passion fruit with a shortbread biscuit, is not on par with the rest.

Dear Wine Lovers,

HAPPY JULY 4th to everybody.

Time flies and the wine tour to Germany’s beautiful, romantic wine regions is around the corner. I just came back from an inspection trip to the Rhein and Mosel regions. I have visited these regions many, many times but every time I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the romantic Rhein between Wiesbaden and Koblenz, the many castles, fortresses towering over the rivers, the Mosel river with its countless bends and turns, the sheer vastness of unbelievable steep vineyards and the many incredibly picturesque villages and towns dotting the river banks. And of course: the world class Rieslings and Pinot Noirs made by vintners of the 6th, 10th, 18th or so generation winemaking families, many well-known around the globe, which I tasted during this trip. There are things in this world that never get old!

During this trip we travel through unique wine region and I can offer a very special treat: there finally is a brand new, exquisite hotel in Bernkastel-Kues, and I could get executive rooms with a view over the Mosel river for the group. We will stay there for three consecutive nights to indulge in the spectacular Mosel region.

It is not too late to come along: there is one room still available for the tour, but you need to make the decision pretty soon since I have to release this room by July 12th.

Do not hesitate to get in touch with me for any questions you may have. I am currently in the US and I am available via my US phone number or via email.

Have fun watching the fireworks later this evening.

CHEERS
Annette

2024 Loire by ombiasy Wine Tours, led by Annette Schiller, took place from Sunday, June 9 to Thursday June 20, 2024. The tour started in Nantes and ended in Sancerre.

Annette and I arrived 2 days early in Nantes. On the first night, we went with others, who had also arrived ahead of the tour, to L'Océanide, which has a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide.

Michelin Guide - Bib Gourmand

Roasted scallops with cabbage and crunchy buckwheat, red mullet in a shellfish jus... L'Océanide certainly maintains close ties to the sea, although the menu also features duck foie gras simply ‘cuit au naturel’ and veal kidneys sautéed with shallots. Chef David Garrec sources his produce from the famous Talensac Market next-door, hence the unmistakable freshness of the fish! The authentic 1950s vintage interior oozes old-fashioned charm by the bucket load.

Gault&Millau 11.5/20

A timeless classic that doesn't seek to surprise, but rather to comfort a loyal clientele who appreciate a pure marine tradition, to be tasted in particular in the good "Menu du Marché" at €35, which offers choice and variety: langoustine ravioli in a Thai broth, roasted scallops with smoked bacon, filet of red mullet pan-fried in olive oil with shellfish jus, duck breast on acidic gastrique skin. The hand is sure, the desserts in the same spirit (chocolate bar with red fruit sorbet), the cellar rather well informed about the region (Bretaudeau, Guiberteau...).

Gilles Pudlowsky

Inspection Trip to the Rhein and Mosel Regions ahead of Rhein + Mosel 2024 by ombiasy WineTours (August 28 to September 6, 2024)

Rhein + Mosel 2024 by ombiasy WineTours will take place in late August/ early September. It will start on August 28, 2024 and end on September 6, 2024.

Back in Frankfurt, Germany, for a couple of days, following Loire Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours, Annette and I went for 3 days to the Rhein and the Mosel in order to check, confirm, and verify a number of items. The last tour to the Rhein and Mosel took place in 2019.

Annette Schiller: Germany - Rhein and Mosel 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

We very much focus on the Mosel region.

You can see the detailed program here: https://ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/germany-north/germany-north-itinerary

There are only two slots left for this tour.

Hotel Schwarzer Bock Radisson Blue in Wiesbaden

Hotel Schwarzer Bock, a newly renovated hotel with a history dating back to 1486. Even German poet Goethe was a guest here. Rest and relaxation can also be found in the historic bathhouse, a symbiosis of traditional architecture and modern spa facilities.

This is were the group will meet on August 28.

Eberbach Monastery

The Staatsweingut Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau has the same roots as Château du Clos de Vougeot in Bourgogne. Both monasteries were founded by Cistercian monks about 900 years ago.

Weingut August Kesseler

It will be a bit tricky to get to Weingut August Kesseler with our bus. #worldclass winemaker August Kesseler will sit down with us for an extensive tasting.

Kaub

We will cross the Rhein River by ferry boat in Kaub.

Weingut Lanius-Knab in Oberwesel

Member of the VDP, the association of about 200 elite winemakers in Germany. It has been family-owned for the last 250 years. Tour, tasting and lunch.

Koblenz: Deutsches Eck and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

You find the Deutsches Eck right where the Mosel flows into the Rhine. On the other side is the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. A few years ago the Deutsches Eck and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress were connected by a cable car system, which we will use when we are there.

Hotel Moselblick in Winningen

Right on the banks of the Mosel river. One night.

Terrassenmosel

visitmosel.de: In the lower course of the Moselle, the almost 100-kilometer-long lower valley section between Pünderich and its confluence with the Rhine in Koblenz, is called the Lower Moselle or also the Terrace Moselle.

The region is characterized by steep terraced vineyards and is distinguished from the Middle and Upper Moselle by a mostly narrow valley with sometimes high and steep vineyards. Vineyards are often small parcelled, terraced steep slopes. Well known far beyond the Mosel are he Winninger Uhlen and the steepest vineyard in Europe, the Bremmer Calmont. Up to 29 terraces, one above the other, and many kilometers of dry stone walls run through the Uhlen, Hamm, Röttgen and Brückstück vineyards in Winningen. The spanning arches and scissor staircases embedded in the walls are impressive. The cultivation of such extreme steep slopes is a real challenge for the local wineries. The preferred grape variety is Riesling. The slate terraces of the Lower Moselle store the heat and thus allow the cultivation of Riesling white wines of special quality.

Weingut Knebel in Winningen

Schatziwines.com (US Importer): “We want every vineyard, every site, each vintage, and even each cask to be allowed to show its own character and to observe its development. That means accepting what we have been given. In this way, we’re committed to the ideas of natural wine.” — Matthias Knebel

If you reach the Mosel Terraces by train, you’ll find your face involuntarily pressed to the window, staring in disbelief as you make the slow bend around the base of an impossibly sheer wall of slate and vines, rising almost from the track edge itself. This is where the Knebel family has been growing grapes since 1642. And over the centuries, it hasn’t gotten measurably easier to do so. Today, Matthias Knebel’s fidelity to painstaking, handwrought viticulture is yielding extraordinary results across his range, from a ridiculously undervalued village bottling to the magnificent GGs. The wines deliver the unadulterated intensity of these warm, slate-packed terraces, with an emphasis on texture, minerality, purity, and supreme finesse.

Region

The Mosel Terraces are distinctly warmer and even more formidable than the Middle Mosel just a few river bends away. Here the river valley narrows and the terraces climb, chiseled step-like into the slate and quartzite banks. The terraces make it possible for grapes to grow where it would otherwise be too sheer and stony to farm, while their form helps ensure the vines’ development by guiding their root systems into the slope. However, they are also quick-drying heat traps. This aspect was once a vital asset, but these days, they pose a danger of encouraging excessive ripeness. Ripeness can lead to the roundness and high alcohol levels that are anathema to Mosel riesling. Matthias and an influx of younger producers are countering this, in part with a serious commitment to sensitive farming wherever possible. It’s a movement that is transforming the region from almost moribund to kinetic right before our eyes. “Respect for a wine culture that has melded the slate, the steep slope, the river landscape, and the grape variety into a single entity in a centuries-long process,” says Matthias, and it is this philosophy  that sets the Knebel wines apart.

Matthias Knebel

As a child, there was no doubt in Matthias’ mind that he would become a winegrower like his father, Rheinhard. But as a teenager, Matthias had second thoughts. He saw first hand just how grinding the work could be. Ultimately, he was convinced by the magic of wine itself and made the decision to follow family tradition. Rheinhard passed away unexpectedly in 2004, just as Matthias was to begin his studies at Germany’s top wine school, Geisenheim. These were sad, difficult times for his mother, Beate, for Matthias, and for everyone who had known Rheinhard. Being the strong woman that she is, Beate carried on in Rheinhard’s absence and took charge of the estate for the next four years. In 2008, Matthias returned from his studies and, together with interns and temporary staff, began carrying out Rheinhard’s legacy. By 2016, his work and vision had earned the estate VDP membership.

The total focus at Knebel is riesling. And the particular joy of the wines comes from Matthias’ feel for allowing the grape to translate the specific idioms of each of his parcels. Within these sites, every terrace has its own microterroir, influenced by a high variation in soil composition, exposition, and vine age. From Hamm come wines of herbal spiciness; Brückstück, concentration and elegance, Röttgen, fruity forcefulness, and Uhlen, succulent density. These sites are legendary among lovers of steep-slope riesling. From vintage to vintage, the wines have vaulted in complexity and finesse, resonance and vibrance as Matthias attunes himself to the character of each parcel and the demands of farming these sites in a warming world.

Vineyards and farming

Blessed with a collection of old vines, some un-grafted, Matthias relies on fewer canes, natural competition, lower yields, and rigorous selection. In 2012, he gave up all chemical herbicides in the terraces and the estate hasn’t used fertilizer in decades. “My parents did a great job, so I didn’t need to reinvent the wheel,” says Matthias. Because holdings in Winningen tend to be smaller and more scattered even than elsewhere in the Mosel Terraces, the handwork these sites demand is monumental — easily double the number of man hours needed to tend flatter vineyards.

In the cellar

Matthias’ objective — “deep Mosel rieslings with fine elegance and powerful expression” — is realized across the range: even his basic riesling is sourced entirely from the terraces. Only perfectly healthy, ripe grapes are used for the top wines. This serious selection process is the reason hardly any wine was made in the 2013 vintage, for instance. Preferment skin contact is occasionally employed depending on the site and quality of the vintage. All of the wines are fermented spontaneously.

Matthias prefers stainless steel as the primary vessel for vinification and aging as he feels it best expresses his nuanced terroirs (and for a guy working on his own, are, helpfully, very easy to clean). Generally speaking, malolactic fermentation is avoided, but much like maceration, is determined on a case-by-case basis. Extended lees aging completes the depth and balance of the wines.

“We see ourselves as accompanists to our wines,” says Matthias. “Accompanying an idea, an objective, a concept of style. But we like to allow singularities, edginess, particularities to come through. We want every vineyard, every site, each vintage, and even each cask to be allowed to show its own character, to observe its development. That means accepting what we have been given: not making a big vintage leaner or a lean one heavier. In this way we’re committed to the ideas of natural wine.”

Bremmer Calmund Vineyard

With a gradient of up to 60%, the Calmont is the steepest sloped vineyard in all of Europe and counted among the steepest classified single sites found anywhere in the world. The sun shines almost horizontally here to the ground.

Reiler-Hof: Lunch

Weingut Melsheimer

In the village of Reil/ Mittelmosel, Annette and I stopped at Weingut Melsheimer (represented in the US by Daniel Hubbard at M.S. Walker), where we discussed with Steffi Melsheimer the visit during the 2024 tour. Thorsten Melsheimer is a fifth generation, Demeter USA, non-mainstream winemaker. We had a outstanding Melsheimer orange Riesling in the evening for dinner at Restaurant Dian im Deinhard's.

Weingut Willi Schaefer

Skurnik Wines (US Importer): Weingut Willi Schaefer (4.2 hectares)
Graach / Mosel / Germany

If you’re new to all this, there’s a reason these wines are so beloved. Part of it is that they’re so scarce; the estate is all of 4.2 hectares with no desire to grow. Part of is the wines themselves; they’re silly delicious. You cannot be unhappy drinking these perfect ur-Mosel Rieslings.  And as crystalline as they are, as ethereally complex and limpidly clear, they have a quality of calm; they don’t fuss at you with how amazing they are. Since 2015, Christoph Schaefer and his wife Andrea run this storied family winery in Graach, the pair met while studying enology at Geisenheim. Their winemaking philosophy is not much different than that of Christoph’s father or grandfather. The focus is not on numbers or analytics, but on how the grapes taste. From harvesting each plot to the fermentations with natural yeast, all the way through bottling, everything is done by taste and feel.

In the village of Graach, with south-to-southwest exposition, the vines have great sun exposure all day as well as natural spring that runs through the hillside, guaranteeing good water supply even in warm vintages. The Romans already knew the benefits of Graach’s sites and cultivated vines here. In the Prussian classification of the Mosel vineyards from 1816 to 1832, Graach’s vineyards had the highest ratings. Compared to the wines just slightly northwest in Zeltingen, the wines from Graach show cooler green and white tones rather Wehlen and Zeltingen’s more orange and red flavors. These wines perfectly reflect this unique terroir and show the distinct differences between these two sites right next to each other. Domprobst is more mineral, smokier, shadowy, and takes longer to emerge while Himmelreich is buoyant, more floral, lighter in texture, and is open from day one.

Schaefer is absolutely, without question, one of the greatest producers in Germany. This is a benchmark for the Mosel and the wines are coveted not just by collectors, but by other growers.

Hotel Deinhard in Bernkastel-Kues

Annette Schiller. During this trip we travel through unique wine regions and I can offer a very special treat: there finally is a brand new, exquisite hotel in Bernkastel-Kues, and I could get executive rooms with a view over the Mosel river for the group. We will stay there for three consecutive nights to indulge in the spectacular Mosel region.

Bernkasteler Doctor Vineyard

Bernkasteler Doctor is one of the most famous vineyard names in the world, although the wines that are currently made there do not have the reputation any more that they used to have. The Doctor is a small (3.3 hectares) plot – south-facing, and with an extremely steep slope of between 45% and 60%.

The Berncasteler Doctor was owned by Count von der Leyen until 1760, and in 1794, under French rule, declared community property. During most of the 19th century, the Doctor was leased to the Thanisch family and it eventually became the property of Dr. Hugo Thanisch and his wife Katharina.

As part of the 1971 German Wine Law, the Bernkasteler Doctor’s boundaries were extended. The owners of the original vineyard understandably objected, and the matter was not settled in court until 1984.  As a result, the vineyard boundary remained extended to the west, encompassing what was once part of the adjacent Graben vineyard, but not to the east. By way of appeasement, this land was renamed Alte Badstube am Doctorberg.

The vineyard is planted exclusively with Riesling vines, about 45% of which are ungrafted. Today, the Bernkasteler Doctor is divided up among the following owners:

Weingüter Geheimrat J. Wegeler - Gutshaus Bernkastel
Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – Erben Thanisch
Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – Erben Müller-Burggraef
Patrick Lauerburg
Weingut Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt (0,06 hectare leased from Wegeler)
Heilig-Geist-Stiftung (owns 0,26 hectare, leased for 10 years in 2006 by  Weingüter Wegeler and Weingut Witwe Dr. Thanisch – Erben Müller-Burggraef)

Dinner at Restaurant Dian im Deinhard`s

Annette and I had dinner at Restaurant Dian im Deinhard's. It's motto is "Asia meets Riesling". We chose a Weingut Melsheimer orange Riesling of Thorsten Melsheimer to go with our Asian food. Excellent! We will go there for dinner during the tour on one evening.

Breakfast at Hotel Deinhard`s with a Deinhard Sekt Brut

We finished the inspection trip with a German Sekt Brut from Deinhard, which has its roots in a wine merchant company founded in Bernkastel Kues by Johann Friedrich Deinhard in 1794. Peter Mertes, the largest German wine producer and owner of Deinhard's Hotel, bought the Deinhard Wein und Sekthaus in 2020, after it had been part of the Henkell portfolio for 23 years.

Deinhard`s is a new hotel in Bernkastel-Kues, right at the Mosel bridge from Bernkastel to Kues. It is owned by Peter Mertes, the giant German wine producer located in Bernkastel-Kues. It is a posh, high-end hotel with ultra-modern rooms.

The restaurant of the hotel is DIAN, which offers Asian food. Accordingly, the focus of the extensive wine list is on fruity sweet wines. There are several pages of wines under the heading "feinherb". Not a single wine of the about 200 bottles listed is not from the Mosel. The list of ultra-premium dry wines is short, given the focus on fruity-sweet wines.

Annette and I had dinner there on our June inspection trip for Rhein + Mosel 2024 by ombiasy WineTours. We will be back during the tour for dinner on one of three evenings we will spend in Bernkastel-Kues.

See: Dinner at L'Océanide (Bib Gourmand Michelin) in Nantes - Loire Valley 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

On the second night, we went to  L'Instinct Gourmand, which had a Bib Gourmand Michelin until last year.

L'Instinct Gourmand

Gault&Millau's review (10.5/20):L'Instinct Gourmand is located in Nantes' old town and is one of the city's liveliest streets, with a steady stream of new addresses. The restaurant's good instincts, tight prices and professional welcome keep it going. Few banalities, even at lunchtime in a formula priced at €20.90: gyozas chicken ginger coriander kaeshi sauce, fish of the day with marjoram butter fennel seeds roasted parsnips salsify, moelleux with lime and fresh blueberries. The same care has been taken to offer a small wine list with a fairly classic selection and well-priced wines.

Michelin Guide:

Oceania l’Hôtel de France in Nantes is a stately, 4-star true Nantes institution in an 18 th century mansion perfectly situated right in the city center in the pedestrian area next to the Opera House of Nantes. The hotel has recently been completely renovated and very tastefully combines old world charm with contemporary off-beat twist.

Guided Tour of Old Town Nantes

Today Nantes is France’s sixth largest city with a population of about 320.000 in Nantes proper and roughly 1 million in the metropolitan area. The ancient gallo-roman city of Namnetus, founded at a narrowing of the Loire and the confluence of the Erdre and Sèvre Nantaise, owes its rise to its extremely favorable geographical location.

Located at the mouth of the river, Nantes was not vulnerable to attacks from the sea and was considered one of the safest seaports when overseas trade began. Nantes took on the status of an industrial and commercial metropolis.

Nantes was conquered by the Bretons in 851 and was the capital of an independent Brittany for hundreds of years. In 1207 a fortress and château - the Château des Ducs de Bretagne - was built which served as the residence of the kings of Brittany and the center of the historical province of Brittany. In 1446 the last Duke of an independent Brittany François II rebuilt the castle and this is the architecture as we see it today.

After Brittany was annexed to France in 1532 - Anne of Brittany married the king of France - the Château des Ducs de Bretagne was used by the kings of France when they visited the region. After centuries of being the home to dukes and hosting kings and their courts, the castle, gradually abandoned, was put to use as both a barracks and a prison.

In 1915, the City of Nantes acquired the building and had a museum added in 1924. In Nantes a mile-stone of French history was written: in 1598 the “Edict of Nantes” was issued which legalized Protestantism to put an end to the religious wars and to unify France.

La Cigalle

This brasserie across from the opera house of Nantes, displaces all the images of the classic, voluptuous style of the late 19th century: an intoxication of ornamental decoration and on top of it a superb meal is served. On 1 April 1895, the brasserie was opened for business by its first owner, Mrs. Calado.

This brasserie was once the headquarters for the Surrealists. The Surrealists Jacques Prévert and André Breton were regular patrons. Scenes from several films have been shot here, including Jacques Demy's 1961 film Lola.

Dinner

We had a 3-course menu with 4 wines - one sparkling, one white and two red wine(s).

2024 Loire by ombiasy Wine Tours, led by Annette Schiller, took place from Sunday, June 9 to Thursday June 20, 2024. The tour started in Nantes and ended in Sancerre.

We started off exploring the Loire Valley wines in the Atlantic region of the Pays Nantais or Lower Loire, the easternmost and last Loire Valley wine region before the Loire River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wine-growing region is located on a southern slope, at the confluence of the rivers Sèvre and Maine. The soils are mainly different types of schist. This region is almost exclusively devoted to white wine, the “Muscadet” - made from the “Melon de Bourgogne”grape - with crackling acidity and sleek citrus fruit. These are sea-side wines with an emphasis on freshness and the perfect pairing with all sorts of seafood. I quote Flatiron Wines: “Oysters and Melon de Bourgogne: a magical pairing, the two together really are more than the sum of two.”

Our first stop was at Vignobles Günther Chéreau, Château du Coing, in Saint Fiacre-sur-Maine, AOP Muscadet Sèvre et Maine.

Our visit comprised a vineyard tour, cellar tour, tasting and light lunch at the winery. Our hosts were Aurore Günther-Chéreau. Most of the time, her huge dog was also with us.

Vignobles Günther Chéreau is represented in the USA by Williams Corner.

Vignobles Günther Chéreau, Château du Coing, in Saint Fiacre-sur-Maine

There is evidence that the lands in this region have been cultivated since Roman times. One can see cellars, hewn from the ground and built up with schist and sandstone. The origins of the Château du Coing go back to the 15 th century. In 1973 the domaine was acquired by Bernard Chéreau and his wife Edmonde Carré. In 1990 their daughter Véronique Günther-Chéreau, a trained pharmacist, took over.

Today her daughter Aurore takes on more and more responsibilities. They cultivate 110 acres of vineyards,
almost all are planted with the Melon-de-Bourgogne grape and with a small percentage of Chardonnay. 60 acres are planted with vines that are over 80 years old. Winemaking is according to “Lutte Raisonée”. The yields are kept down to 50 hl/ha and spontaneous fermentation is the rule. I quote Chris Kissack, The Winedoctor: “All the same, these are wines of considerable polish, depth and substance at the upper level. I’m impressed.”

Vignobles Günther Chéreau (Estate Website)

A family with winegrowing savoir-faire

The running of the estate has been a family affair for several generations. Today, the mother and daughter team Véronique & Aurore manage this prestigious estate, producing highly acclaimed terroir-driven Muscadets across 75 hectares of vineyards in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation.

Véronique has been at the estate since 1989 when she took over from her father. The estate’s different terroirs and the ageing potential of its Muscadets fascinated her and are aspects she has constantly striven to promote. Aurore, a qualified winemaker, joined the estate in 2011, and has converted some of the vineyards to certified organic winegrowing methods.

An extraordinary location at the confluence of the rivers Sèvre and Maine

We have vineyards covering 75 hectares within the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, in three different places:

The name Château du Coing comes from the estate’s location at the ‘corner’ of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. This location gives the vineyard south-facing slopes with a cool microclimate created by the two rivers. This wine estate has a long history, of which the first written record dates back to 1536.

Our transition to organic winegrowing

Since 2010, we have gradually been converting our vineyard to organic agriculture. We are keen to produce wines that reflect and reveal the potential of the terroir and are now tilling the soil more, with mechanical assistance.

Unique grape varieties

We grow two main varieties: Melon B. and Folle Blanche. These unique varieties have long been grown in the area. Their subtle varietal aromas allow the character of the terroirs to show through in the wines.

Lees-ageing provides richness and complexity

We typically use the traditional techniques of the Vignoble Nantais to make our wines, in other words, they are matured in underground vats and on lees. The lees are the natural deposit that nourishes the wine, bringing it complexity and ageing ability. The wines are left on their lees for months or even years in some cases.

Terroirs are our source of excellence

Our terroirs are our key source of inspiration. The Muscadet region is the largest dry white wine making region in Europe.

There are, however, many diverse styles of Muscadet due to the region’s differing terroirs.

Beneath our vineyard plots, we find various rocks, including two-mica gneiss, gabbro and micaschist.

A section of gneiss slopes down to the micaschist of Saint Fiacre (Château du Coing) towards Monnières (Grand Fief de la Cormeraie). Due to the confluence, the vines of Château du Coing grow on south-facing slopes, which is rare in the Muscadet region. Micaschist is a type of weathered rock that we find in Monnières.

The wines of Château du Coingshow floral and fruity notes like lily, wild carnation, pear, and peach and have very nice minerality, which gives them an elegant style.

The wines of our Cormeraievineyard are driven by ripe fruit aromas, like peach and apricot.

In Gorges, our Château de la Gravelle has a subsoil of weathered gabbro and clay with quartz. The grapes here are late ripening. The wines shows smokiness and notes of gunflint, giving them very nice minerality.

Careful plot selections

Separate wines are made from each plot with no blending of wines.

This allows us to bring out the best of each terroir and to produce diverse styles of Muscadet.

We have always been a strong advocate for the recognition of Crus Communaux (village cru wines). The national appellations office, INAO, has selected a number of eligible plots within our vineyards. The grapes from these vineyards are subject to strong controls and low yield requirements. Our Monnières Saint Fiacre and Gorges crus are among some of our finest wines.

Muscadet that can age

Known and recognised for several generations for our age-worthy Muscadets, we invite you to travel through time for a unique discovery of the wide-ranging tastes of Muscadet vintages.

Quick facts:

  • Today, Château du Coing is run by mother-and-daughter team Véronique and Aurore.
  • It’s a historic property: the first written record of the estate goes back to 1536.
  • Véronique was an early proponent of the “Crus Communaux,” and the estate continues to vinify and bottle individual plots separately to showcase the diversity and ageability of Muscadet.

Véronique Gunther-Chereau has headed Château du Coing since taking over for her father in 1989. The property dates to the 15th century, and the family have been inheritors of the estate for three generations. Originally called Château du Coin (“castle of the corner”) in reference to its location at the joining of the Sevre and Maine rivers, the name was changed to “castle of the quince” to sound more regal, or at least palatable. The proximity of the two rivers creates a cooler microclimate in the area, and closer to the confluence, the vineyards are planted on south-facing hillsides, a rarity in the region.

Since Véronique’s ascendancy, the Gunther-Chereaus consolidated their vineyard holdings and enlarged the acreage under vine. Her daughter, Aurore, joined her mother at the wineryin 2011 after completing her studies in oenology, bringing fresh energy and new perspectives. They recently began converting to organic viticulture, building on their longstanding practice of limiting inputs and favoring mechanical work of the soils.

Véronique has always been a proponent of the Cru Communaux and ageability in the wines of Muscadet. She was an early pioneer of long aging on the lees in large volume without stirring to give Melon de Bourgogne structure and character. The wines are aged in large underground glass tanks, as is traditional in the Nantes region. Each plot is vinified separately in order to showcase the diversity between the different terroirs.

Château du Coing has been a part of WCW since the beginning and feels like an old friend, with wines of freshness, subtlety, and intrigue.
