Germany: Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc on the Upswing

Germany's wine growing area totals hectares 103.000.

135 grape varieties may be cultivated in Germany, 100 for white wine and 35 for red wine.

Generally, Germany is considered to be a white wine country. Since the 1980s, however, German red wine production has constantly increased. Nowadays, over 35% of the vineyards are cultivated with red grapes.

Out of the 135 grape varieties, only about 20 have a significant market share.

Until the early 20th century, Elbling was Germany's most planted variety, after which it was eclipsed by Silvaner during the middle of the 20th century.

After a few decades in the top spot, in the late 1960s Silvaner was overtaken by the high-yielding Müller-Thurgau, which in turn started to lose ground in the 1980s.

From the mid-1990s, Riesling became the most planted variety.

As for red grape varities, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, there was a downward trend, which was reversed around 1980.

From mid-1990s and during the next decade, there was an almost explosive growth of plantation of red varieties, which, however, has come to a stop. From around 2005, the proportion of red varieties stabilized around 37%, about three times the 1980 level, before declining again in the following years, with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) being stable.

Germany has become the #3 producer of Pinot Noir in the world, after France and the USA.

Today, almost 50% of the total output is accounted for by Riesling, Spätburgunder and Müller-Thurgau. Riesling is on a light upward trend, Spätburgunder is stabil and Müller-Thurgau is on a downward trend.

Among the white grape varieties, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are all on an upward trend. Germany is now the #1 producer for Weissburgunder and the #2 producer for Grauburgunder. Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, and Bacchus are on a decline. Silvaner is also retreating, except for the area of Franken, where it is increasing.

The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association’s mission is to increase awareness of the fine wines of the Atlantic seaboard through trade and consumer education. We liaise with national, state, and regional wine organizations to highlight the wines and winemakers working here. Each year a competition is held to identify award-worthy wines from the seventeen eastern states: all those that touch the Atlantic Ocean plus West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar: This Tuesday, May 9, the class will again be given by member Annette Schiller who has generously presented two prior excellent classes this spring.  Here is Annette's announcement:

Dear All,

I invite you to join me on May 9th for a tour through the Rhône valley. You will taste 5 different wines -all red-, a classic Syrah from the Northern Rhône, 3 wines moving up the quality ladder from the Gigondas area in the Southern Rhône and finishing with a gorgeous Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Rhône Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in France, and the second largest after Bordeaux. The Greeks introduced viticulture in the 4th century BC. Later the Romans came and brought viticulture to a different level. In the 14th century the Papacy moved to Avignon and the clergy had a tremendous influence on the development of the Rhône Valley wines.

Since then the world has discovered Rhône wines and some of the most famous and expensive wines come from the Rhône Valley. Just think Guigal’s La-La-La wines and the world famous Châteuaneuf-du-Pape.

The vineyards are located on both sides of the river. The Rhône Valley is divided into two distinctively different regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The Northern Rhône stretches for 60 miles from Vienne – south of Lyon – to Valence, and produces just 5% of Rhône wines. The region has a continental climate with pronounced seasons. The soils are granitic and schistous and the vineyards are located on very steep terraced slopes. The red grape of the Northern Rhône is 100% Syrah.

Depending on the appellation the red wines are often blended with 5 – 20% of the white varietals Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.

As the Rhône river flows southward and the valley widens the climate changes. It becomes more Mediterranean with long, warm summers and mild winters. Here we find the big brother of the Northern Rhône, the Southern Rhône wine region which accounts for 95% of the production and with Grenache being the principal variety in most red wine blends. There also is Syrah, Mourvèdre, ( “GSM” blends) and a variety of other red and white grapes. The landscape is much flatter than in the north and a variety of soils can be found: alluvial soils, limestone subsoils, sand, gravel, stones. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape region is famous for the “galets roulées”, those large, rounded stones that have been smoothed by both glacial and fluvial actions over time and deposited in the region dominating the character of the soil which gives the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines its distinctive character.

As usual we will have two cheeses and baguette accompanying the wines. This is a 25$ tasting.

No reservations are required.

WHERE & WHEN WE MEET: The Seminar meets at 7:45PM every Tuesday (except for July, August and the weeks of December 25th and January 1st) at St. Patricks Episcopal Church at 4700 Whitehaven Pky, between Foxhall Road and MacArthur Blvd.

Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours - Wine, Culture and History, France

The Rhône Valley Tour 2022 by ombiasy WineTours took place from June 20 - June 29, 2022. The group comprised 10 wine lovers including Annette and Christian Schiller.

Annette Schiller in her Announcement

Join us as we explore in detail the wines of the Rhône Valley. We start in vibrant, cool, sophisticated Lyon, the capital of Haut Cuisine. We stop in the Northern Rhône where names such as Côte Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage make us crave a glass of wine. We follow the eponymous Rhône river south to Avignon, the city that was the seat of the papacy for the better part of the 14th century. We stop in Châteauneuf du Pape. We do a side-kick to the gorgeous Dentelles de Montmirail where we find the wines of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Séguret, and the sweet wines of Rasteau. The southern Rhône belongs to Provence. Provence: this immediately ignites a deep yearning for the fragrance coming from Lavender fields, for the special light the Impressionist artists masterfully captured in their paintings, for a very special "savoir vivre", and for the dark red, fruity, spicy wines. This year we travel during the height of the flowering season and we will experience a sea of purple Lavender fields.

Pregaming: Austria Wine Dinner - Chef Jacques Cooks for Klaus and his Austrian Wines at La Côte D'Or Café in Arlington, Virginia, USA

Annette's Austria Wine Tour by ombiasy starts on May 28, 2023, in Vienna - in a bit more than 2 weeks.

See: Announcement: Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours - 12 Days: May 28 - June 08, 2023

On the tour, we will visit and taste the wines of a sizable number of Austrian wine producers, including some that are brought to the USA by Klaus Wittauer.

Against this background, Annette an I enjoyed very much the Austrian Wine Dinner at La Côte D'Or Café in Arlington, Virginia: Chef Jacques cooks for Klaus and his Austrian wines.

Chef Jacques prepared French classic modern cuisine for the outstanding wines of Klaus from Austria.

The focus of the dinner was on two wineries, Weingut Steininger in Langenlois in the Kamptal and Weingut Steindorfer in Aptelon at Lake Neusiedle, both of which we will visit on the tour.

Invitation by Chain Bridge Cellars

Sitting in the bar of La Cote d’Or Restaurant a few weeks ago with importer Klaus Wittauer and Chef Jacques Imperato, it was fun to watch Chef taste, react to, and describe the half-dozen Klaus was pouring. But – as one look at the menu below shows – it will be even more fun to taste the dishes Chef Jacques has dreamed up to complement each offering.

Which you can do by joining us, Klaus and Jacques for dinner celebrating the season and Austrian wines on Tuesday, May 2 and Wednesday, May 3. You’ll enjoy a sparkling welcome Grüner Veltliner, a still GV with asparagus, crisp, dry, Riesling with seafood, two bold oak-aged Austrian reds and a very sweet treat to complete the meal. All for $110 per person including everything – tax, tip, and even parking (free in the hotel lot next to the restaurant).

Here’s the full menu and wine list:

While Gathering

Grüner Veltliner Sekt 2018

Asparagus, Brussels sprout hash, white pepper sabayon, kale chips

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Ried Loisium 2018

Salmon, bay scallops’ mousseline in brick dough, leek spinach, tropical beurre blanc

Steininger Riesling Kamptal DAC 2021

Venison Medallion sautéed, blueberry, balsamic vinegar sauce

Mushroom stuffed with parmesan cheese, potato darphin

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge 2020

Steindorfer St Laurent Reserve 2019

Coconut crème caramel, mango, Britany butter cookie

Steindorfer Beerenauslese Cuvee Klaus 2018

Are any of these dishes “Austrian”? Nope! But will they all complement and intensify the delicious flavors of a great set of Austrian wines? You bet!

And it certainly is a great set of Austrian wines, as we’ve come to count on from any bottle Klaus Wittauer imports. With a lifetime of experience in Austrian wine, a portfolio of top producers in each major region, and boatloads of enthusiasm and good humor, Klaus is the perfect guide to the wines of Austria. You’ll enjoy classics like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from Kamptal’s Steininger family and a pair of rich (but highly drinkable!) reds from Burgenland’s Steindorfer. And the grand finale sweet wine made by Ernst Steindorfer just for Klaus is not only delicious – it’s the finest value in luxury dessert wine we know of!

A not-to-be-missed Wine & Culture Tour to Austria by ombiasy WineTours: May 28 - June 08, 2023

Annette's Austria Wine Tour by ombiasy starts on May 28, 2023, in Vienna - in a bit more than 2 weeks.

See: Announcement: Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours - 12 Days: May 28 - June 08, 2023

The tour is fully booked. Annette and I went to Austria earlier this year on a pre-tour trip. The photos below are from this tour.

Annette Schiller: I am still over the moon after this trip: I always loved Austria but this time I scrutinized the country with a sharper eye and mind. And yes: Austria is breathtakingly beautiful, the wines are sooo gorgeous, people are friendly and welcoming, the Austrian dialect suggests old school gallantry, Austria’s history is still so alive and its location at the junction between Western and Eastern European countries makes it so interesting, diverse, and unique. For many centuries Austria was one of the three powers in Europe next to the English Royalty in London and the Romanovs in Sankt Petersburg, Russia. Austria’s Habsburg dynasty ruled over half of Europe for many centuries. Despite the fact that Austria has become a fairly small country after WWII - slighter small than Maine - you still feel the power of the past. Vienna is one of the most beautiful capitals with its majestic buildings, huge palaces, thousand year old cathedrals and monasteries, the mighty Danube river, the unique coffee houses where still today the major daily papers are available to feed your train of thought, the world-famous Burgtheater, Opera House, and Vienna Philharmonics, and with the still very present glamour of its famous musicians Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt , Franz Schubert - just to name a few.

Austria is a mostly mountainous country in the Middle / Eastern Alps. In the southernmost Austrian wine region, the Südsteiermark (Southern Styria), you have a truly alpine feeling with vineyards on extremely steep slopes and a view towards stunning mountain peaks. The only flat area is the Pannonian plains east of Lake Neusiedl at the border with Hungary.

We will visit all wine regions in Austria, from the famous Wachau to Styria, and will visit many of the most famous wine estates. Small but beautiful - that is Austrian’s 2000 year old viticulture in an international comparison. Austria is, with France, Italy, Spain, Germany, considered one of the best wine-growing countries in Europe. Austrian wine does one thing better than a lot of other wines: expresses history, site, climate, and vintage. We will taste delicious wines made from international grape varieties as well as grapes deeply rooted in Austria’s viticultural history.

Crozes Hermitage Wine Dinner at Restaurant 2941 with Chef Bertrand Chemel, Winemaker Maxime Graillot and Importer Laurent Givry, Northern Virginia, USA

Annette and I enjoyed an outstanding winemaker dinner at 2941 Restaurant in Northern Virginia, with with the food of Chef Bertrand Chemel, the Crozes Hermitage and other wines of Maxime Graillot and importer/ distributer Laurent Givry, founder/ owner of Elite Wines.

Sitting with Maxime Graillot at the same table, Annette arranged arranged a visit of the estate of Maxime Graillot on the next Rhône Valley Tour from Lyon to the Mediterranean Sea by ombiasy WineTours, scheduled for 2024.

Thanks again Laurent, Maxime and Bertrand for a wonderful evening.

Maxime Graillot

Maxime is involved in a number of wine projects, with his brother Antoine Graillot and with another winemaker, Thomas Schmittel. He also imports wine into France, including the wines of Weingut Rebholz, Pfalz, Germany.

Domaine Alain Graillot (Elite Wines)

In the space of 20 years Alain Graillot has established a reputation for making his Crozes Hermitage the most sought after of the appellation. In spite of only 20 hectares of vineyards, his wines are sold world wide on an allocation basis only. They are a special favourite with the most prestigious restaurants in France and elsewhere. Alain has a passion for the Syrah grape from which he makes hand crafted wines of great distinction and enormous elegance. His son Maxime has taken over direction of the estate with his father remaining in the not too distant background.

Domaine des Lises (Elite Wines)

Maxime Graillot is Alain’s son. Armed with a winemaking master’s degree, plus practical experience gained in Burgundy and South Africa, as well as with his father, Maxime has now established his own estate – the Domaine des Lises.

The winery is located next to Alain’s, but Maxime has his own vineyards, and is developing his own style. He practices 100% destemming, hand pigeage, and malolactic in barrel, but otherwise intervenes as little as possible to allow the wine to develop richness and complexity during its 12 months in cask. When questioned, Maxime sums up his philosophy as “succinct” !

Equis (Elite Wines)

Maxime Graillot and his winemaker and associate Thomas Schmittel are amongst the leading lights in the Crozes Hermitage appellation today. In 2003 the young and determined Maxime grasped the gem of an opportunity and purchased 7 hectares of Crozes Hermitage in Beaumont-Monteux (in the warmer, dryer south-east sector of the appellation) in the form of Domaine des Lises. In 2004 he produced just 6000 bottles of Crozes. Enter friend and winemaker Thomas Schmittel who teamed up with Maxime in 2006 to establish a small negoce company Equis. Domaine de Fa (Skurnik Wines)

The legendary Graillot family has a long history of making wine in the Northern Rhone, where their ability to produce some of the most age-worthy and delicious Syrah is matched by only a select few producers. Owner and winemakers for both Domaine des Lises and Domaine Alain Graillot, Maxime and Antoine Graillot, decided to look North for new challenges that extend beyond the dramatic slopes of the Rhone Valley. Their love of Gamay led them to the bucolic vistas of Beaujolais. The two brothers struck gold in 2013 when they purchased prime, organically farmed, sites in Fleurie and Saint Amour. With these pristine Granite vineyards, the Graillot family has announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with in a region that is experiencing a vinicultural Renaissance.

Syrocco - Morocco (Skurnik Wines)

Syrocco is produced by legendary Rhône vigneron Alain Graillot and his sons, Maxime and Antoine. He stumbled upon these vineyards and the Thalvin winery while bicycling in the Zenata region of Morocco between Casablanca and Rabat. This gorgeous area is an organic dream, with cool winds blowing off the Atlantic and no polluting industries whatsoever. The Thalvin winery has been around since the 1920’s, and when Alain found their gorgeous property, he formed a partnership with them to provide Syrah and Cinsault vines for his own Moroccan wines. Alain crafts these two wines as a fruit-forward and juicy, yet they are made in an Old- World style with soft extraction, excellent balance, and complex aromatics.

Invitation

The Tasting

At the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar, we always have 5 wines, 2 cheeses and fresh baguette. We sit at up to 10 tables of 8. Each table of 8 gets one bottle. We always buy a case of each wine. The The left-over wines are sold at the price we bought the wines.

The evening starts at 7:45 pm with an introduction to the tasting of up to 25 minutes.

This time, 64 people participated.

Passing of George Marling, German Wine Society Chairman Emeritus, Washington DC, USA

Dear German Wine Society Members,

With great sadness, I must announce that we have learned from the family of George L. Marling that he passed away on May 8, 2023.   George was the Executive Chairman of the German Wine Society for many years until 2022, when he became Chairman Emeritus.  One of the most significant and longest-serving members of our Society, George had been active in the GWS for more than 40 years, and previously also served as National Vice President, as well as the Chair of our Capital Chapter from 1987-89.  As indicated by the multiple GWS medallion ribbons George is wearing in our photo, he had earned all the levels of medallions available to members of the Society, including the Silver as well as the Gold level for which wine study and examination in Germany were required.  George last spoke to members in person at our 40th Anniversary reception at the German Embassy in 2017, and also sent remarks for the 45th Anniversary in 2022.  He continued to attend events for as long as he was able, last joining us in person for an Austrian wine luncheon with Klaus Wittauer at Bazins in Vienna, VA in 2019.  Many of our longtime members will remember the various roles that George had in our Society over the years, and his love of German wines and promoting knowledge of them in the United States, as well as his service to his country and other diverse interests.  On a personal note, my wife Nina and I were pleased to count George as one of our earliest friends in the Society and always found his company delightful.

George is survived by his wife Laura D. Marling, as well as several children and grandchildren.  His family is planning a remembrance Celebration of Life service to be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 11 am.   The location will be Westminster at Lake Ridge, 12191 Clipper Drive, Lake Ridge, VA 22192.  Lake Ridge is also Woodbridge, the community where George spent his final years.  It is near Occoquan, off Route 94 South or 123.

The family has requested, instead of flowers, that those wishing to contribute gifts do so, in care of the address shown above, to either: (1) the Westminster Supporting Fund, which helps residents to remain in the Woodbridge community when their funds have been exhausted, or (2) the Kreider Fund for Employee Education and Citizenship, which helps the community’s employees with tuition to continue their education or pay the citizenship fee for them to become citizens.  I will be pleased to pass on to the family any questions about these opportunities to contribute or about the Celebration of Life service.

Ultra-premium Sekt: "Rohkost 2023" with 28 German Elite Producers of Sparkling Wine, Bensheim, Germany

$

Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl recently pointed to three revolutions in terms of German wine: "People forget the doldrums of German wine, especially from about 1985 to 1995. If you were cool in Germany then, you didn’t drink German wine. But it has changed this century. It happened with dry Riesling first, then Pinot’, she said, adding about German sparkling wine, ‘and now it’s finally happening with Sekt."

First, dry Riesling, then Pinot Noir and now Sekt.

Following the example of "Le Printemps des Champagnes", "Rohkost 2023"was the event to attend if you wanted to understand what is going on in Germany with the regard to sparkling wines.

28 leading German Sekt producers presented their sparklers at Griesel & Compagnie in Bensheim, Hessische Bergstrasse, on May 22, 2023. This was the third "Rohkost" tasting.

Each of the 28 Sekt producers at the event poured 2 sparkling wines, at 3 different stages of the production process of Sekt, which can last a decade or even longer.

First, early stage - base wine (after first fermentation, before second fermentation, without bubbles). All base wines were vintage 2022.

Second, intermediate stage - base Sekt (after second fermentation, before aging on the lees, with bubbles).  The base Sekts were vintage 2018/19/20.

Third, the final product - Sekt ready to be consumed. The Sekts ready for consumtion were, depending on the aging period on the lees, were vintage 2014/15716/17/18. The longest on the lees were those of Schlossgut Diel and Sekthaus Raumland,

The sparkling wines poured at the event were all at par with the best sparkling wines from around the world. No wonder that people are talking now about a Sekt revolution in Germany, following the dry white wine revolution 3 decades ago and the Pinot Noir revolution more recently.

The producers present at "Rohkost" are all at the forefront of this revolution.

Dinner at an Iconic Beisl in Vienna: Griechenbeisl - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

Griechenbeisl: Those who love Vienna dine at the Griechenbeisl, the oldest Inn in town. Enjoy traditional Viennese dining in a cosy historical ambiance. Find yourself in the same room in which famous guests like Mark Twain, Beethoven, Mozart, Luciano Pavarotti and Johnny Cash enjoyed their dinner.
Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.
Coming by train from Munich, Annette and I arrived in Vienna on the day before the tour started. For dinner, we went to the Griechenbeisl, close to the Mercure Wien Zentrum, where the group stayed for the first night. We bumped into Bruce and Vicky and joined them at their table.

Beisl

As the Heurige and the Vienna Coffee House, the Beisl is a Viennese institution. This is where I eat my Vienna Schnitzel and have a couple of glasses of good Austrian wine. Expect to share a table with other customers. The term 'Beisl' probably comes from the Yiddish word 'bajiss', meaning 'house'.

Griechenbeisl

The Griechenbeisl (Beisl of the Greeks) is the oldest restauraunt in town. The first documentary mention of the Griechenbeisl dates back to 1447.

The restaurant derives its name from the Levantine merchants who lived in the quarter where the Griechenbeisl is located. Regardless of its name, the food that was served in the Griechenbeisl has always been traditional Viennese cuisine.

Historically important is the year 1852 when the host Leopold Schmied decided to bring the completely new Pilsener Urquell from Pilsen in Bohemia to Vienna for the first time. Until today, the Griechenbeisl is the place to go if you want a Pilsener Urquell in Vienna.

For many centuries the Griechenbeisl was a meeting place for artists, scholars and politicians many of whom are immortalized by their signatures on the walls the famous ‘Mark Twain Room’. In this room you will find signatures from the likes of Karl Lueger, Graf Bismarck, Egon Schiele or Johnny Weissmüller.

The ground floor consists of 5 guest rooms (Rundes Zimmer, Zitherstüberl, Karlsbader and Mark Twain room). On the 1st floor are 3 more guest rooms (Jagdzimmer, Kerzenzimmer and Biedermeier room).

In addition to the names mentioned above, among the many prominent guests that the Griechenbeisl has seen over the centuries are: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, Mark Twain, Johnny Cash, Phil Collins, Luciano Pavarotti and Barry Manilow, to name a few.

Dinner

Annette had a Griechenbeisl Trilogie and a Kaiserschmarrn.

I had a Leberknödelsuppe and Steak Tartare.

Wine: 2021 Weingut Wieninger, Gemischter Satz.

Klosterneuburg is an incredibly beautiful and very special place, not just in Austria, but on the planet. It has been Austria’s most important religious, cultural, and enological center for more than 900 years.

We spent a whole afternoon there. First, we toured the monastery and palace Klosterneuburg. Then, we went to that part of the monaster/ palace where the wine making facilities are located and enjoyed a tour with the same guide. Finally, we tasted 4 wines in the wine cellar.

Weingut Stift Klosterneuburg wines are available in the USA.

Guided Tour of the Monastery and Palace Klosterneuburg

Klosterneuburg is an incredibly beautiful and very special place, not just in Austria, but on the planet. It has been Austria’s most important religious, cultural, and enological center for more than 900 years. Markgraf Leopold III laid the foundation stone in 1114. In 1133 Bishop Hartmann and thirty Augustinian Canons founded the monastery and worked fields and vineyards to sustain their living. The mighty Monastery and Palace Klosterneuburg - visible from afar - is breathtakingly beautiful: the location on the banks of the Danube river and its appearance that mostly goes back to the Baroque period. We saw the monastery as well as the famous Imperial Appartments.

Tour of Weingut Stift Klosterneuburg, Wagram

Stift Klosterneuburg is one of the oldest continuously operated wine estates of the world. Since 1133, except for four years during WWII, Augustinian monks made wine at Stift Klosterneuburg. Today Stift Klosterneuburg is Austria’s oldest and largest privately owned wine estate with 225 acres of vineyards in top sites around Klosterneuburg. In 1860 the monks founded the first enological school which still today has a stellar reputation, and most of the top winemakers in Austria studied here. Stift Kosterneuburg is also Austria’s only carbon-neutral winery.

We did do a tour through the cellar, ending with a tasting of the Klosterneuburg wines.

Stift Kloserneuburg

Terroirwines.com

The Klosterneuburg is one of the world’s oldest wine estates, tracing its lineage back to the 12th century, when the monastery was founded by Margrave Leopold III of Babenberg (now Saint Leopold, Patron Saint of Vienna and Austria).  In 1133 the Margrave summoned the Order of St. Augustine to Klosterneuburg, where they were to spend centuries developing the monastery into a center of religious life, culture and scholarship. To this day the Augustinian Canons work in this spirit following closely the monastic Rule of Saint Augustine. In 2014 Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery celebrated its 900th anniversary, and continues to serve as Leopold’s final resting place.

The Wine Estate

Stift Klosterneuburg owns a total vineyard area of 108 hectares, making it one of the largest and most famous wineries in the country.  With nearly ten centuries of experience, Stift Klosterneuburg is dedicated to producing authentic wines of character, wines with a sense of place. Specialization in indigenous grape varieties, conscientious handling of the fruits and gentle vinification serve this goal.

The Vineyards

The legendary vineyards are the heart of the estate.  Located in Vienna, and in the villages of Klosterneuburg (Wagram), and Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf (both in Thermenregion), they are part of a vital ecological system and home to numerous species of flora and fauna. Sowing a diversity of plants between vine rows attracts an abundance of beneficial animals and insects. The soil is given great attention in the vineyards. Fertilization is with the estate’s own compost, and the living soil is worked entirely by hand.  Each vine is given individual attention by placing shoots and pruning leaves to ensure optimal sun exposure and ripening. The estate is currently experimenting with keeping chickens between the rows to loosen the soil, provide light fertilization and reduce weeds.

The Cellar

An extensive cellar from the Baroque period delves deep under the monastery. The vaulted cellar extends over four levels to a depth of 36 meters (118 feet). State-of- the-art technologies are put to work for the production of absolute top-quality wines in this historic venue. Prolonged, temperature-controlled white wine vinification highlights classic varietal aromas and fresh, crisp fruit. Red wines are fermented warmer for optimal extraction of color and tannin. Minimal intervention is practiced to preserve the varietal, vintage, and site character of the wines. Maturation and storage take place in the four story vaulted cellar directly under the monastery.

Carbon Neutral

Conscientious use of the natural resources has always been a central concern for Stift Klosterneuburg. The estate has been certified as the first carbon neutral winery in Austria by the environmental protection pioneer “ClimatePartner.”  Sustainable cultivation and production methods employed at the winery result in significant reductions in emissions. The deep double-walled cellar of Stift Klosterneuburg does not require any additional air-conditioning for wine storage. The warmth created during fermentation and other processes is recycled, and the estate’s own biomass power plant satisfies all heating needs and delivers surplus energy into the network. Relying on local energy providers whenever possible helps reduce transportation needs. Stift Klosterneuburg is in the process of converting all of its tractors to biofuel. Winery manager Wolfgang Hamm keeps a close on our production methods and says “Environmental protection is a permanent process in our winery.”

Tasting

We tasted 5 wines.

Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna.
Following a trip to the Klosterneuburg complex (visit of the monastery and palace Klosterneuburg and a tour and tasting at Weingut Kloster Neuburg), about 45 minutes away from Vienna downtown, we returned to our hotel in Vienna and went out to Plachutta in der Wollzeile for dinner.
This is Vienna’s most famous and best place to have Austria’s signature dishes: Vienna Schnitzel and Tafelspitz at its best. Plachutta is more than a restaurant: it is a Vienna institution.

Plachutta in der Wollzeile has 12/20 Points in the Gault&Millau Österreich.

Plachutta in der Wollzeile

offbeatbudapest.com

Plachutta, the Viennese high temple of boiled beef, hardly needs introduction. Enter this oversized downtown restaurant any time of day, and you'll find elegant local Viennese of all ages (and tourists, too) sitting around tables set with white linen. 13 cuts are available, as are helpful charts of a cow showing where each comes from. Most famous is Tafelspitz, once the favorite of Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph, from the upper part of the rear leg of a young ox (also known as top round).

The tender meat arrives in pretty copper plates, submerged in a flavorful broth alongside bone marrow, carrots, and thin noodles. Spoon up some of the liquid, slather the marrow on toast, then settle yourself in for the main prize. Don't forget about the sides: horseradish slicked applesauce, chive-laced sour cream, and rösti (shredded and fried potatoes).

The Plachutta family owns several restaurants, but this one, in the city center, is best known.

Dinner

We all had a 3-course dinner, with soup, Tafelspitz or Wiener Schnitzel, and dessert.

The Wines

Annette ordered a 2021 Weingut Christ, Vienna, Gemischter Satz, and a 2021 Weingut Zahel, Vienna, Gemischter Satz as well as 2020 Weingut Ybi, Hortischon, Burgenland, Blaufränkisch (Selection Plachutta).

City Tours: Berlin and Potsdam - Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours

Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours took place from Monday, June 19, 2023 to Thursday, June 29, 2023.

The tour started in Berlin and ended in Frankfurt.

The group stayed at the Titanic Hotel in Berlin, a 4-star hotel in Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin’s most prestigious central district, close to the main artery: the Unter den Linden Boulevard, the Museum Island, the Berlin Opera, the government offices, and the Brandenburg Gate.

Annette and I arrived a day early (by train from Frankfurt) and went with other members of the group to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden to see Sleepless, Opera Ballad in zwei Akten (2021) by Peter Eötvös, who was at the performance.

In Berlin, the focus of Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours was on history and culture, not on wine.

We did a 2 1/2 hour city tour of Berlin and a 2 1/2 hour city tour of Potsdam, had lunch at an Italian Restaurant right next to the Brandenburg Gate and dinner at Restaurant Borchardt

Borchardt near Gendarmenmarkt is a Berliner institution in which celebrities regularly meet. Named after a Huguenot wine merchant who opened a delicatessen on the premises in the mid-19th century (he even supplied the Kaiser himself with imported goodies), the restaurant was reopened as a Parisian-style brasserie in 1992. Nicknamed “Promi-lokal” (“celebrity joint”) or “canteen of the Republic” by the German press, for the past 3 decades Borchardt has been ‘ground zero’ for the new German capital’s political, cultural, media and business elite. The juicy Wiener Schnitzel counts as a highlight.

Berlin

The “Berlinflüsterer - Berlin whisperer” Arvid Zemkus gave us a thorough insider tour of Berlin: Germany’s largest city, its historic and new capital, a divided city for 45 years and today a vibrant, hip, artsy, spontaneous, lively city along the Spree River that is a food-lovers paradise.

We had lunch at Mama Trattoria. This Italian eatery is right next to the Brandenburg Gate at the Pariser Platz next to the American Embassy, the French Embassy, and the famous Hotel Adlon.

We had some time to walk around Berlin’s most famous city square.

Potsdam

Potsdam - a 1000 year old city - is now the capital city of the state of Brandenburg and famous for its palaces, gardens, and cultural and historic significance. In former times it was the residence city of the Prussian Kings and later of the German Emperor.

We all know about Frederick the Great, arguable the most important and beloved King of Prussia. To escape the formal ceremonies and pomp of the Berlin court he built a summer palace “Sanssouci” - basically more like a large, single-story villa than a palace - in Potsdam, outside of Berlin. Frederick the Great was very modern in his thinking and embodied the ideas of the “Age of Enlightenment”. He built beautiful gardens and a vineyard “Königlicher Klausberg” on the slopes of the hill Sanssouci sits on. There was varied success in harvesting good grapes and after 1945 most of the buildings and gardens were destroyed by the Russian Army.

After reunification in 1989, besides restoring historical buildings in Potsdam, the focus also shifted to the gardens and the vineyard. In his will Frederick the Great wrote that he wanted to be buried in the vineyard of Sanssouci, but through twists and turns of history his final resting place was in Hohenzollern Castle in Württemberg.

On August 17, 1991 (the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 made it possible) on the 250th anniversary of his death, Frederick's casket lay in state in the court of honor at Sanssouci, covered by a Prussian flag and escorted by a Bundeswehr (German Army) guard of honor. After nightfall, Frederick's body was finally laid to rest in the terrace of the vineyard of Sanssouci – in the still existing crypt he had built there – without pomp, in accordance with his will.

Potsdam is also home of the film studio “Babelsberg” which was founded in 1912 and is the oldest large-scale film studio in the world.

“Potsdam” is a synonym for every politically interested person since world history was written here. It was here at the “Cecilienhof Palace” that the Potsdam Conference took place after WWII when President Harry S. Truman of the USA, General Secretary Joseph Stalin of the USSR, and Prime Minsters Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee of the UK decided on the future world order and the division of Germany which lasted for the following 45 years.

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023.

The tour started in Lyon and ended in Paris.

We met at Grand Hotel des Terreaux in Lyon, a 4-star beautiful hotel in the heart of Old Lyon, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It combines the atmosphere of an old-fashioned 19th century town house with a contemporary interior. We stayed there one night.

Annette and I took the TGV from Frankfurt to Lyon and arrived there in the late afternoon of Saturday, July1, 2023.

We checked in at Grand Hotel des Terreaux, a 4-star beautiful hotel in the heart of Old Lyon, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It combines the atmosphere of an old-fashioned 19th century town house with a contemporary interior.

After unpacking, we headed to the corner and Le Broc’Bar, our go-to bar under a big tree, when in Lyon.

The next day, on Sunday, July 2, the group met in the bar area of the Grand Hotel des Terreaux in Lyon after lunch. We spent the afternoon walking through Lyon before having our first group dinner at the Restaurant Le Grand Café des Négociants, a few blocks away from our hotel.

Dinner at Restaurant Le Grand Café des Négociants

Created in 1864, the « Grand Café des Négociants » settles in Lyon’s History.

It keeps throughout time its Second Empire decor characterized by its moulded and painted ceilings, its splendid opulent curtains and its numerous mirrors, all in burgundy and mahogany monochrome that give it a warm ambiance.

Formerly a place of negotiation for diamond merchants, silk merchants and wholesale butchers that used numerous mirrors to communicate discretely through signs, the brasserie has remained the meeting place for politicians, artists, business travelers…

Located on the Peninsula (classified at World Heritage by Unesco), between place Bellecour and the Town Hall, steps from the Palais de la Bourse, the Célestins theater and the Opera, in the heart of the golden square where are located luxury boutiques, the Grand Café des Négociants welcomes you daily throughout the year.

Guided Sightseeing Tour of Lyon

Lyon is France’s second largest city with around two million people, and a chic, sharp, savvy, historic, bustling city. It was founded by the Romans in 34 BC, and has been a commercial, industrial, and banking powerhouse for the last five hundred years. In the 15th century it became Europe’s publishing center, by the mid 18 hundreds it had become Europe’s silk-weaving center, at the dawn of the 20th century it became France’s cineastic center, and today it is a sophisticated city with a dynamic cultural life, a thriving university scene, and France’s gourmet capital. The city center lies on the peninsular at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers, the oldest Renaissance part of Lyon is sandwiched
between the Saône river and the hillside to the west. The city is classified as UNESCO world heritage site. Very special are the “Bouchon” simple, very typical Lyonnais restaurants and the “Traboules” interior passageways between houses being established during the “silk” period of Lyon.

We took the funicular to go up the hill above the Renaissance part of Lyon from where we had a fantastic view on the entire city. Our English-speaking guide took us on a leisurely walk down to the Saône river showing us and explaining the history of Lyon and contemporary Lyon.

After a wonderful evening at Plachutta in der Wollzeile
See: Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz at Plachutta in der Wollzeile, Vienna. Plachutta is more than a Restaurant: it is a Vienna Institution - Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours
we walked back to our Hotel Mercure Wien Zentrum.
Four of us stopped at Vis-a-Vis Wine Bar, which is just oppositee of Restaurant Figlmüller, famous for its Wiener Schnitzel, for an after-dinner glass of wine.
Vis-a-Vis offers over 300 wines, both domestic and international, with a strong emphasis on the former. It is also a good place to discover talented Austrian newcomers.
The food served is Heurigen-style, with delicious little snacks and antipasti. If you want Wiener Schnitzel, you have to go to Figlmüller, vis a vis.

I blogged about Vis-a-Vis Wine Bar more than 10 years ago. See: Vis-a-Vis Wine Bar in Vienna, Austria.

Steak Tartare at Restaurant Borchardt, Berlin-Mitte - Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours

In Berlin, the focus of Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours was on history and culture, not on wine.

We did a 2 1/2 hour city tour of Berlin and a 2 1/2 hour city tour of Potsdam, had lunch at an Italian Restaurant right next to the Brandenburg Gate and dinner at Restaurant Borchardt.

See here:  City Tours: Berlin and Potsdam - Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours

Borchardt

The Steak Tartare counts as highlight.

Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine Chermette in Saint-Vérand, Beaujolais, with Martine and Jean-Etienne Chermette - From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours

From Lyon to Paris: Total Immersion in Burgundy and Champagne 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, July 02 - Thursday, July 13, 2023.

After spending Sunday, July 02 in Lyon, on Monday, July 03 we left Lyon in the morning and started our to the North, eventually arriving in Paris 12 days later.

Monday, July 03 was our Beaujolais day. We drove through the beautiful Beaujolais region and visited  two very different Beaujolais wine producers which are regarded as in the very top of their league.

Our first stop was at Domaine Chermette in Saint-Vérand, Beaujolais

We were received by Martine Chermette and her son Jean-Etienne Chermette, who is now in charge and responsible for the operation.

Jean-Etienne showed us the winemaking facilities and took us on a vineyard tour before presneting his wines at a tasting in the barrel cellar.

The wines of Domaine Chermette are availabe in the USA through Peter Weygandt.

Domaine Chermette in Saint-Vérand, Beaujolais

Annette Schiller: One of France's hottest Beaujolais vineyards, owned by Pierre-Marie Chermette, located in Saint-Vérand. The former name "Vissoux" is not only a district but also his mother's maiden name. He took over the family business from his father in 1982. Until then, the family always sold the juice, but already then they had a remarkable reputation regarding the quality. With the generational change, Pierre-Marie immediately decided to bottle and market his own wine. In the mid-1980s, he became a pioneer in the region for a Cuvée Traditionnelle, vinified with grapes from old vines. He works in a completely classic Beaujolais style. The grapes are not destemmed and fermented as a whole cluster with CO2 pressure as Macération Carbonique. The residual fermentation then takes place after pressing in large wooden vats. The simple Beaujolais wines remain in this for about six to seven months, the others up to 10 months.

Part of the tradition is also that Martine and Pierre-Marie decided to bring the old Burgundy bottles back to the Beaujolais region. The couple's aim is to grow ripe and healthy grapes as naturally as possible. Pierre-Marie Chermette intervenes as little as possible in the process. He wants the terroir to be able to express itself in each of his wines. And he does it in a wonderful way. At Chermette you get incredibly dense, concentrated and focused, almost Burgundian wines.

Peter Weygandt: I search out wines as naturally made as possible, but only if this contributes to the wine being better. Domaine du Vissoux may just be the most perfect expression in my whole portfolio of what I seek, for this very ability to be natural and great, at once.

A masterful 5th generation grower, Pierre has maintained the strict traditions of his ancestors and of the region, with more tenacity than most. Despite fashions changing, Pierre has, for his entire life, adhered only to the classic methods handed down from his family. This means farming in as sustainable a manner as possible, only using indigenous yeasts for every wine, long fermentations and making whole-cluster (semi-carbonic) wines in the old foudres built by his great-grandfather. Pierre Chermette's yields are so low and the grapes so naturally ripe that he does not chaptalise. The wines are bottled with little or no filtration and the addition of no sulfur or very little depending on the cuvée.

Given the life Pierre imbues upon the wines, they are as stable as Premier Cru Burgundy and age for nearly as long in many cases. They are, nevertheless, utterly "glugable" upon release. The wines of Vissoux are a fascinating study in terroir, tradition and talent, with the pricing more befitting a wine half as great.

Guided Private Tour of the Schönbrunn Imperial Palace

Schönbrunn Palace on the outskirts of the city of Vienna is one of Europe's most beautiful Baroque castles and has been in the possession of the Habsburg dynasty since 1569. For centuries it was the summer home of the ruling Habsburg family. A visit to Schönbrunn Palace is the most authentic experience of imperial heritage. This UNESCO world heritage site shows centuries of Austrian history and culture.

We had the Grand Tour through 40 spectacular rooms where famous emperors such as Empress Maria Theresia and Empress Sisi lived. Photos are not allowed. Still, I took a few.

Fiaker Sightseeing Tour of Vienna

A “Fiaker” is the Austrian word for “horse-drawn carriage”. What can be more romantic than enjoying a city tour in a Fiaker. Lean back, let the trot of the horses make you totally relaxed, and learn about the city of Vienna from our English-speaking coachman.

After a day and a night in Berlin, we moved to Saale-Unstut and visited 6 wineries during the following days. Weingut Born in Salzatal-Höhnstedt was our first producer.

This was the second visit of Weingut Born by an ombiasy WineTours group:

Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Weingut Born in Salzatal, Saale-Unstrut, with Elisabeth Born - Germany-East Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Art, Culture, History - Berlin, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg, Franken

Saale-Unstrut

The Saale-Unstrut wine region sits on 51st latitude and is Germany’s northernmost accredited wine region, located in the valleys of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, an area of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). The landscape is characterized by steep terraces, stone walls, orchards, and river meadows. This is a historic wine producing region. Cistercian monks came from Burgundy and planted the first vines more than 1000 years ago. The oldest record of viticulture dates back to the year 998 during the reign of Emperor Otto III, a grandson of Charlemagne.

Despite its northern situation, due to the river valleys heat islands are generated whose microclimate allows the grapes to flourish beautifully, along with the 1,600 hours average of sunshine a year. However, there is only around 500 mm of annual rainfall, making it one of the driest regions in Germany. These climatic conditions lead to a kind of natural reduction in yield, so the harvest amount at Saale-Unstrut averages only 50 hectolitres per hectare.

Saale-Unstrut is one of the smaller wine regions with 2000 acres of vineyards. Traditionally dry wines with typical, finely nuanced fruitiness and liveliness are the hallmarks of the area. 75 % of the vineyards are planted with white varieties. Silvaner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc are the classics here. Pinot Noir and Zweigelt account for the majority of red grapes.

Our first stops in this region were wineries in the northern area of Saale-Unstrut, the Mansfeld lake area. Copper ore was mined in this area since the 900s which over the centuries transformed the landscape and created several lakes. An important city in this area is Eisleben, the hometown of Martin Luther - the German theologian and religious reformer who catalyzed the 16th century Protestant Reformation - who was born here in 1483 and died here in 1546.

Weingut Born in Salzatal-Höhnstedt, Saale-Unstrut

Weingut Born is located in the northernmost tip of the Saale-Unstrut region in the Mansfeld lake area. The protective Harz mountains and the heat reflective surface of the water produce a fantastic microclimate. The colored sandstone soil with its layers of loess-loam serves as a heat reservoir. The viticultural history of the Born family goes back to the mid 19th century. In 1990, shortly after reunification, private land ownership again became possible and Günter Born founded one of the first privately owned wineries in this region.

Today the winery has 20 acres of vineyards and is managed by his daughter Elisabeth and her husband Jochen. Elisabeth and Jochen both studied enology at the famous Geisenheim enological university and gained experiences in New Zealand and South Africa.

In 2011 Elisabeth served as the German Wine Princess.

We were received by Elisabeth and Günter Born.

Elisabeth tasted with us a sparkling wine in the wine cellar, presented her wine portfolio in the new tasting room and at the end of the visit took us to the vineyards.

The wines of Weingut Born are predominantly sold in the Saale-Unstrut region and are not available in the USA.
