"Jean-Luc Colombo has become one of the stars of Cornas. Well-known as an oenologist for dozens of Rhone Valley clients, Colombo has had a positive influence in the Rhone, undoubtedly improving the quality of many estate's wines. As for his own wines, there are usually three cuvees of Cornas. Visit of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo

This was a wine tasting only. We were joined by Anne Colombo, the wife of Jean Luc, herself an oenologists, who moved with Jean-Luc to Cornas in 1982.

I had met Jean-Luc Colombo in Washington DC, a few months before our visit and had established contact with Jean Luc. Jean Luc was not there when we visited the estate and the visit was a tasting only event.

Vins Jean-Luc Colombo

This is a relatively young winery by French standards, established in 1987. Today Jean-Luc Colombo is one of the most progressive and influential winemakers of his generation and is nicknamed “The Winemaking Wizard of the Rhone.” 

Jean-Luc, a native of Marseille, moved with his wife Anne to Cornas in 1982 to set up a pharmacy and oenology lab. Both are oenologists and they created the “Centre of Oenology of Côtes du Rhône” in Cornas in 1984. Jean-Luc has ever since been a consulting winemaker for some 100 of the best “Domaines” in the Rhône Valley, Provence and Bordeaux. 

In 1993 Anne and Jean-Luc sold the pharmacy to focus only on wine. They purchased more vineyards and started to work as négociants in the region. The Domaine now has 30 acres of vineyard holdings in Cornas. The bulk of the entire production is through the négociant business, with around 30 wines, the biggest line being the Côte de Rhône.

Palm Bay International: What happens when you combine a creative, adventurous spirit with an unbridled passion for wines of quality and character? For lovers of fine wines from France's Rhône Valley, the answer is simple: Jean-Luc Colombo.

1984: A devotee of the Syrah grape, Jean-Luc was convinced that the northern Rhône appellation of Cornas offered enormous potential for producing stellar quality Syrah. Following his conviction, he opened his own wine laboratory in Cornas and developed a thriving reputation as a wine consultant, breathing new life into the then-obscure wines of Cornas.

JLC Vineyard: Shortly after, Colombo began purchasing his own vineyards first in Cornas then throughout the Rhône Valley and Languedoc - leading to the establishment in 1994 of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo. In 2003, Colombo enhanced his ventures by returning to his roots near Marseille and purchasing vineyards to produce the now highly-successful Cape Bleue Rosé.

Jean-Luc Colombo is one of the most progressive and influential winemakers of his generation and is nicknamed “The Winemaking Wizard of the Rhone.”

Based in The Rhône Valley: In addition to running Vins Jean-Luc Colombo, Colombo continues his consulting practice, advising approximately 100 producers throughout the Rhône Valley, Switzerland and southern France. His wife, Anne, who is closely involved in the production of the Cornas wines, manages the consulting practice.

In 2010, Laure Colombo, Anne and Jean-Luc's daughter, joined the family business. An avid world traveler, Laure studied viticulture in Bordeaux and also holds a Masters degree in Oenology from Montpellier University. She now works alongside her parents and is already making a name for herself as one of the Rhône's rising stars.





Wine Spectator/ Winemaker Talk: Jean-Luc Colombo (2007)

Wine Spectator: Winemaker Jean-Luc Colombo, 50, jokes that he's a bit of a Rhône outcast since he relies on modern techniques in one of France's most traditional wine regions. At the same time, it's hard to imagine where the Rhône would be without him, since Colombo was among the first to travel outside the area and not only aggressively market his own wines, but also tell the story of the entire region. Colombo grew up in a family of cooks, so he knew about food and wine early on, but at first he chose to be a pharmacist instead. It was a short-lived career move; he purchased his parcels of vines in the 247-acre Cornas region in 1986. From that humble start, he now makes his small-production, sought-after Cornas cuvées (Terres Brûlées, Les Ruchets and La Louvée), as well as a range of other wines, mostly from purchased grapes, reaching all the way down the valley to a $9 Côtes du Rhône.

Colombo has even begun to make wines from the Côte Bleue, near Marseilles, from old and neglected vines he found in a national park. The project is near to his heart since it brings him back closer to where he grew up. In addition, Colombo remains in high demand as a consultant, in and out of the Rhône Valley. But wherever he works, his focus remains squarely on making wines that work well with food. He took a quick break between tastings and consulting appointments to talk about his inspirations and his own influence on Rhône winemaking.

Wine Spectator: How did you first get interested in winemaking?

Jean-Luc Colombo: I was first interested in the taste of wine. My mother was a chef--I grew up in a kitchen environment, with a grandmother and a mother who were great promoters of the culinary tradition of Marseille. Not all winemakers have a passion for food, but because everyone in the family was a chef, all we talked about was food. Then, I really discovered enology during my pharmaceutical studies. I got a pharmacy license, and decided to open a lab. The lab was [similar] to winemaking.

WS: What makes Cornas so different from the rest of the Rhône Valley?

JLC: Cornas is part of the Northern Rhône hillsides, which is where Syrah comes from, and where Syrah gives its greatest expression. At the same time, the hills of Cornas benefit from Mediterranean influences, which bring a lot of character to the wine.

WS: And your wines from Côte Bleue?

JLC: That's very different from Cornas. Cornas is the best landscape and soils for Syrah--it's very porous. So we can have a good Syrah with a lot of aromas of flowers like lilac and iris. With the fruit it's black currant or licorice. But the Côte Bleue is more for Mourvèdre and Syrah because the land is chalk. It's also a peninsula--almost like an island. You have the huge Lake of Berre, maybe a 30-mile circle, and then south is the sea. It's almost like Long Island. When you're there it's always cool. Not cold, not hot. So the Côte Bleue is a very good terroir to grow Syrah and Mourvèdre. The taste of the grape is never too mature--it's always 13.5 percent alcohol. We never get 15 percent. There is no residual sugar, and we don't use irrigation, because we have the humidity on the leaves.

WS: You've joked sometimes that you're the most hated and loved winemaker in the Rhône. Why?

JLC: Well, when I arrived in the Northern Rhône, techniques were very old-fashioned, and I shook some habits (I use new oak, destemming, green harvest). Obviously, this did not please a few narrow-minded winemakers. Conversely, I did get credit because I contributed to improving today's wine quality and also because I myself invested a great deal to promote the wines of the area.

WS: Who have been some of your greatest influences?

JLC: When I discovered enology I read Le Gout du Vin, by the great Bordeaux enologist Emile Peynaud. In the early years of my career, I also got to meet Michel Rolland, who showed me the importance of the role of the consultant, when most enologists were only interested in analysis.

WS: What would you say is the main difference between someone like you and Rolland?

JLC: We share common ideas, but we have always worked in different wine regions, either different by size or notoriety. I'm very close to the thinking of Michel Rolland--I work like him, he works like me--and we are very close. He's a good friend.

But maybe the difference is I think more about the food [that goes with the wine]. The food 40 years ago and 20 years ago and five years ago is different. But the wine [has always been] the same. I love the fruit of the grape. When you eat the grape in September, the taste is of blueberry, blackberry and strawberry, and I like to find the taste of the grape in the wine, in the glass. I try to have the fruit in the bottle, in that glass of wine.

WS: How do you get that?

JLC: We need to be very clean. Clean cellar, clean barrel. You need to wash your hands, wash the baskets. Simple, but in fact, it's very difficult to be clean.

WS: What are some of your favorite things to cook and eat with your wines?

JLC: Very simple things. Like a truffle with a T-bone and marrow. Maybe not in summer … but very good in winter or autumn. Cornas is also much better with venison. And of course, Lièvre à la Royale, which is stuffed and braised rabbit. There is a very famous recipe--it's cooked for a long, long, long time, maybe 18 hours. The stuffing is truffle, foie gras, a lot of spice and good fleur de sel. Usually the hare is like a big sausage. You cut the hare in slices. It's the best! In the U.S. it's very difficult to find, but one chef who cooks it very well is Didier Virot at Aix. It's wonderful. It's a food to dream, because it takes so long to make.

WS: What is your favorite non-European wine?

JLC: Ridge, by winemaker Paul Draper. Usually you have to like the wine and drink it and you get pleasure, and that's it. The winemaking is good when you get pleasure in the glass. But when you know the guy--and we enjoy sharing food and wine with him--or the philosophy of the person, it is much better. I like him very much because he's very knowledgeable and he knows food and wine.

The American Wine Society 2022 National Conference took place in Bellevue/ Seattle, Washington State between October 27, 2022 and October 29, 2022.

Title: The End of the “Großlage”in Germany

Abstract: Did you ever complain about the difficulty to understand the label of a bottle of German wine? Those days are finally over since, on January 27, 2021, the German parliament passed a new German wine law. The most important point of the new wine law is that a new hierarchy to determine the quality of the wine was introduced. The emphasis shifted from the sugar level of grapes at point of harvest as quality measure to the wine’s geographic origin and how narrowly it is defined. This concept follows the “terroir” principle, well-known from the classification in Burgundy.

The visit of Weingut Sven Nieger was quite extensive and intensive. 

We met at the house, where Sven lives with his family and where everything started in the garage. Sven joined us on our bus and we drove to his vineyards. From there, we continued to his new winemaking facilities, where we also had a tasting from tank. The tour ended in the tasting room of Sven`s home with a tasting of his wines.



Sven Nieger belongs to the young generation of winemakers who are excellently educated and well travelled. They are the „enfants terribles“ of the wine scene since they follow their very own ideas that sometimes clash with the etablishment and wine laws.




This is a very new winery.

Sven – who did not have the advantage of growing up in a winemaking family - came home to Baden-Baden after earning his degree in oenology from the prestiges Geisenheim university, and after working abroad in Austria and in New-Zealand at Framingham, one of the best producers in New Zealand. 

He founded his own winery and in May 2012 his winery was officially inaugarated. He leased some vineyards, bought some deserted vineyards on very steep slopes, and was lucky enough to get some vineyards with sixty year old vines.

Sven Nieger currently has around 26 acres, among them are prestigious plots such as Mauerberg, Klosterbergfelsen und Stich den Buben.



Sven Nieger makes wines with a unique taste profile, and he loves making cuvées, which does not sit well with the authorities who assign the AP numbers (The official examination number -AP nr.- is the officially assigned number for the individual labeling of wines or brandys that meet certain quality and taste profiles.) As a result Sven does not present his wines anymore to the regulatory board and hence his wines are all in the „Landwein“ category, and not in the „Qualitätswein“ category. 

But wine critics love his wines. I quote the wineguide Falstaff 2018: „Sven Nieger was a sensation with his impressive single vineyard Rieslings from Baden-Baden, but his wines are often denied an AP number. The white wine cuvée „Unbeschwert“ (easy going) tastes as it is called, and the powerful 2015 Riesling will get even better with maturity. Nieger shows a sensitive touch for the Pinot variety and a fine judgement when dealing with the barrique.“





Sven Nieger : a welcome rebel in Baden

During a recent stop over in Baden-Baden, I had time to visit only one winery. The wine region Baden is mainly known for Pinot Noir, or Spätburgunder in German. It is also known as the hottest wine region of Germany. Everything is relative of course  if you think of summers in the south of Europe, but still, there is a clear difference between the Spätburgunders of the Ahr, situated further north, and those of Baden, the latter being richer and more full-bodied. Not being a huge fan of big and bold wines, I looked for wine makers who dare to go off the beaten track. When I read about Sven Nieger, I knew that he was my man.

Sven Nieger is a relative newcomer in Baden. He only started in 2010 and did not have the advantage of being born in a family of winemakers. He did, however, Go to the Geisenheim institute and worked in other wineries in Germany and New-Zealand before he started on his own. When he came back to Baden, he had to start from scratch, having no land and no winery. Nieger was able to buy vineyards, amongst which three Grosse Gewächse (grand cru), from older colleagues who had no successors and sold off their lands. He showed me a few pictures of the early days, when he was literally making garage wine. He now has a new space with more professional facilities. “But it was more fun working in the garage”, he laughed.

Despite Baden being a red wine region, Nieger focuses on riesling. “Many people don’t like riesling because it’s too sour, but I want to prove that riesling can also be a wine they like”. That is also why he doesn’t mention the grape on his labels. He wants people to judge the wine without any prejudices they might have about riesling. I told him I’m surprised that he is confronted with such opinions on riesling, the grape after all being the nec plus ultra for certain wine drinkers. “We are in Baden”, he reminded me. “People here are used to wines that are round, creamy, and more full-bodied”.  And this is also the second reason why he has rather unconventional labels. The 2014 vintage was not an easy one, producing wines with very high acidity, his rieslings fetching 9g/l instead of the 5,5-6g/l he has in other years. We tasted the Underdog 2014 and indeed the acidity here was high, but not higher than you’d expect in riesling. And then there is Nieger’s rosé : it is bone dry! Again not very much in the tradition of Baden’s wines. The committee judging the region’s wines on their typicity didn’t think much of Nieger’s wines. Eight times he had to send in a bottle. Not wanting to play that game anymore, Nieger decided from then on to declare his wines as Badischer Landwein. And that was the end of that. And of his ambitions to join the VDP at some stage, a German group of top wine makers. When I tasted the 2014 Underdog, it was simply amazing, enormously complex. I think Baden will regret having lost Sven Nieger.

Anyhow, he seems very happy with the path he has chosen. Also no lack of ambitions : “When people drink my wine, I want them to say: This is a Nieger wine.” And so far, things have lifted off quite fast for him, being chosen “newcomer of the year” by Falstaff magazine and getting good press in Germany and abroad.

We started off with his 2016s. His Riesling range consists of three Grosse Gewächse (Grand Crus), one wine that is a blend of grapes of these three vineyards, and one entry level Riesling. Because of the fact his wines are now declared as Badischer Landwein, he cannot mention the names of the vineyards on his labels, and for sure not call them Grosse Gewächse. So he gave them other names : Ungeschminkt (without make up), Underdog, Unbestechlich (incorruptible), Ungeniert (unashamed), and Ungezähmt (untamed). The message is quite clear.

The entry-level Ungeschminkt was already a nice starter, with lots of fruit and refreshing acidity. The Underdog is  a step up, being the blend of the three Grosse Gewächse. The grapes come from the foot of the hills, where there is more loam. The wine was still a bit shy though, and still needs to develop a bit further. Of the three Grosse Gewächse, the Unbestechlich was my favorite. Here the vineyard is based on granite soil. Slate or schist are probably the types of terroir that are most associated with Riesling, but granite is not unusual either. Alsace’s Charles Baur describes the acidity in riesling from granite soils as “delicate”. And that’s the perfect word to descibe the acidity in Nieger’s Unbestechlich. It is perfectly integrated, leaving the front stage for a beguiling mix of saffran, summer blossom, green herbs, and orange peel. The saffran very much reminded me of the 2014 Rieslings of Mosel’s Markus Molitor. But whereas most of Molitor’s Rieslings are sweet, semi-sweet or have at least some residual sugar, this Unbestechlich is completely dry. The Ungeniert, also from granite soil, was similar to the Unbestechlich but more timid at this stage, and will benefit from further ageing. The Ungezähmt, finally, does have some sweetness, but also a mineral touch and sufficient acidity to keep it nicely balanced.

It became clear during the tasting how passionate Nieger is about his wines. Even though the 2017s were not on sale yet, I could still taste the whole range. I could also taste the 2015s and certain 2014s. What I thought would be a one hour visit, turned into a three hour one, but time passed as if it were only one hour. Tasting through all these Rieslings was very interesting and clearly showed the differences from one year to another, the 2014s being very fresh and dry, while the 2015s were richer and riper. Nieger decides every year whether he will make the Rieslings dry, off-dry or semi-sweet, letting the vintage decide. While that is probably the best for the wines, that might make it harder for the consumer in terms of knowing what you will get. His experiments do not help to make that any easier, his 2017s having aged in oak barrels, again not a very typical thing to do with Riesling. The oak is not very present, however, only adding a hint of smoke here and there. I’m very curious how the 2017s will evolve, as they were rather shy when I tasted them. Nieger agreed that they are still too young, but is convinced that they will open up with further ageing. That is also why he will put the 2018s on the market before the 2017s, as the 2018s will be more straight-forward and easier to drink, a consequence of the hot vintage.

19 bottles further, aroma’s of homely cooking started entering the room. I visited Sven Nieger because I wanted something different, and not only did I get a fantastic overview of his wines, I also felt the passion and ambition of an untamed wine maker. I am convinced that that will take him very far.

Château de Candale: A Saint-Émilion Gastronomic Escape

A little castle with its turret sits seemingly suspended on the famed Saint-Émilion slope overlooking the Dordogne. It’s the charming Château de Candale, which is family-run with its 13 hectares on the southern slope and a sea of vineyards in every direction. With a charming visit to taste the wines from three of the family-owned Saint-Émilion wineries and an onsite restaurant that is among the best in Saint-Émilion, Château de Candale is a must-stop in the Bordeaux wine region.

The History of Château de Candale

Château de Candale has been a fixture of the Saint-Émilion landscape for centuries. It was originally founded by Lady Margaret, Countess of Kendal, sometime in the 1400s. Lady Margaret was a descendant of Edward III, who was King of England and Duke of Aquitaine. She married the Castelnau-de-Médoc born Jean de Foix, whom became the Earl of Kendal. Their titles in the French form were Comte de Candale and Comtesse de Candale, which gave the name to the château.

As with so many Bordeaux châteaux, Château de Candale would change hands many times throughout the centuries. In modern history, the Adams family and owners of neighboring Chateau Fonplegade sold Château de Candale to Jean Louis Vicard in 2010.

The Vicards are well known in the Bordeaux wine region and Cognac for their barrel making company, Cooperage Vicard, which was founded in 1875. But in this venture into wine-making at Château de Candale, Jean Louis increased the size of the vineyards to the current 13 hectares.

It was only recently purchased by Magali and Thibaut Decoster in 2017. Not new to producing wine, Château de Candale is one of four Saint-Émilion châteaux owned by the Decoster family.

The Decosters weren’t always a wine producing family, though. It was Thibaut that developed a passion for wine and dreamed of owning a château. His family encouraged him to go work in the vineyards to realize the level of work involved. And Thibaut did just that, working in Léognan for more than three years.

He and Magali purchased their first château, Clos des Jacobins in 2014. And over the course of more than 15 years in the wine industry, they have also purchased Château La Commanderie and Château Roc de Candale.

With their total of four Saint-Émilion châteaux, two of which are prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estates, and a restaurant added in the venture, we’d say Thibaut’s experiment has been a sheer success.

The current project is to expand the wine making facilities at Château de Candale, so you’ll find a bit of construction happening when you visit in 2020.

Atelier de Candale

Château de Candale is one of just a dozen or so Bordeaux châteaux that have their own onsite restaurant. And they combine a visit of the château with a pre-fixe menu du jour for either lunch or dinner with the Prestige Visit.

No matter if you come for the Presitge Visit or just come for a meal, there’s just something about dining in the vineyards. Château de Candale’s restaurant is one not to be missed and undoubtedly among the best restaurants in Saint-Émilion.

With the surrounding rolling vineyard hills and a view stretching all the way back to the forest, the ambiance of Atelier de Candale is only the beginning. In cooler weather like a winter visit, you can dine inside while still enjoying the views from the restaurant’s floor to ceiling greenhouse windows. In summer, you can dine outside on the terrace practically within reach of the vines.

The menu changes seasonally to showcase the fresh, local produce and products of the season. The bistronomique menu, a pre-fixe menu that includes the choice of starter, choice on main and choice of dessert, changes weekly. It’s the bistronomique menu included with the Prestige Visit, which also includes one glass of wine, water and a coffee to finish.

Of course, anyone can make a reservation with or without visiting the château and its a popular spot even among locals. You can choose to order a la carte, or choose the bistronomique or gastronomic tasting menus available.

I had arranged this visit at Domaine du Tunnel with owner/ winemaker Stéphane Robert in Washington DC, at La Paulée by Elite Wines at Restaurant 2941 in Northern Virginia: Celebrating 20 Years of Elite Wines with 40 Producers and 4 Chefs, Washington DC, USA


While we were there, they were in the process of bottling. Still, Stéphane Robert gave us some time for a tasting and a visit of the "tunnel", i.e. the winemaking facilities. We started by tasting 5 wines and then moved to the tunnel. 

It was in 1994 when Stéphane Robert founded the Domaine du Tunnel with just 6 acres of vineyards in Saint-Peray and Cornas. This is an area in the southern tip of the right bank of the Northern Rhône wine region, famous through history and in France for making particularly excellent white wines and of course red wines. 

Since then Stéphane Robert has forged a reputation as one of the leading wine producers of this region. Today he farms about 30 acres in several right bank municipalities as far north as Chavanay. The vineyards are located on hillsides or terraces on granite soils. This requires that all of the work in the vineyards and the harvest are done manually. 

The estate has been certified as “High Environmental Value” work in the Rhône. The name of the Domaine refers to an old train tunnel that the owner refurbished, and which is used as facility for winemaking and maturation.










Domaine du Tunnel

Stéphane Robert is regarded as a rising star in Cornas amongst Rhône producers and wine critics alike. He started his domaine in 1996, when he was in his mid-twenties, and has added parcels over the years. He now holds 13 hectares of Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier vines split across Cornas, Saint-Péray, Saint-Joseph and more recently, Condrieu. He named his domaine after his quirky cellar, which lies in a 170m long converted railway tunnel which was once used by steam trains and is now home to this increasingly important Cornas domaine. As it spans two levels, much of the work can be accomplished by gravity, reflecting Stéphane’s winemaking ethos. Everything is done sensitively, with the aim of expressing the fine terroir of his vineyards. Grapes are hand harvested, he vinifies parcels separately and uses oak sparingly. In the case of his superb Pur Noir, a single parcel made only in the best years, the parcel changes each time according to Stéphane’s preference.




Domaine du Tunnel

A rising star in Rhône wines, Stéphane Robert of Domaine du Tunnel may be soft-spoken, but his wines shout excellence. Although he only began his domaine in 1994, he has already won numerous awards and has been written up in prestigious wine-connoisseur magazines such as Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, Decanter, etc.

After training at Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat, a domaine known for its Saint-Josephs, Stéphane Robert and his wife, Sandrine, purchased their own domaine, which spans Saint-Joseph, Saint-Péray, and Cornas. They named it “du Tunnel”, after the 500-foot stone tunnel that runs beneath the land.

 Work in the vineyards is done by hand, with occasional help from a horse and a winch. Harvests are carefully hand-sorted for quality, then taken for vinification.

Nearly all Robert’s wines — red and white — are vinified in stainless steel vats, then raised for 14-month in oak barrels. Interventions are kept to a minimum during vinification, to better express the characteristic intensity and fruit of the vines.

 Robert’s vinification of Cornas is unique, and includes keeping the stems on 10-50% of the grapes (instead of completely destemming), before subjecting the grapes to fermentation and punch-downs.

According to Decanter Magazine, thanks to Robert’s process, “no Cornas seemed to evoke the undergrowth and wild plants up on the hill better than this one”.

We first met Stéphane Robert at the wine fair in Chavannay in December 2012 — little did we know his wines are quietly becoming a reference for their appellations! Robert’s wines are strong and full-bodied, good for long cellaring. And their stunning complexity literally took our breath away.

It was such a pleasure to travel with other wine aficionados to the Rhône, Bordeaux, the Southern German wine regions and Alsace this year after having been in travel hiatus during the two Covid years.

I would like to give you a heads up of the wine tour schedule in 2023 so that you can plan ahead.

AUSTRIA: Sunday, May 28 - Thursday June 08, 2023 - The tour starts and ends in Vienna.

During this wine tour we discover an often overlooked European wine region and one of the world’s best kept secrets of ultra-premium wine production. We start the tour in Imperial Vienna and will discover that Vienna is not only the breathtakingly beautiful capital of Austria, but also a wine region that is famous for its “Heurige” and “Gemischter Satz” (field blend). We then travel to the easternmost wine region - the Burgenland - where more and more red wine is produced and where the late-ripening “Blaufränkisch” grape is king in some appellations. The southernmost wine region - Styria – is a mountain region. The vineyards in this magnificent, hilly landscape alternate with forests, idyllic orchards, and flower meadows. We finish the tour with a visit to the romantic Lower Austria wine region where we do an in-depth exploration of Austria’s most widespread variety “Grüner Veltliner”.

GERMANY- the easternmost wine regions: Monday, June 19 - Thursday, June 19, 2023 - The tour starts in Berlin and ends in Frankfurt.

Discover Germany’s wine regions east of Frankfurt and Germany’s intellectual and cultural cradle in “Mitteldeutschland”. Spend ten days touring the Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg, and Franken wine regions, discover the phenomenal red wines of Germany, in particular Lemberger and Pinot Noir that gain more and more international recognition, as well as Württembergs great Rieslings, so different from the Rheingau and Mosel Rieslings. Discover Franken’s signature grape, Silvaner. Find out that Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen, the wine regions in the former GDR, produce outstanding wines and learn about the transition from a divided Germany to a unified country. Attend performances at the world-renowned concert and opera houses, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and the Semper Opera in Dresden.

BURGUNDY / CHAMPAGNE: Friday, July 07 - Tuesday, July 18, 2023: The tour starts in Lyon and ends in Paris.

What comes to your mind, when you hear ‘Burgundy’? First class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; Côte d’Or; Puligny-Montrachet; ancient history; world-renowned vineyards; Cistercian monks; 1000 year old abbeys; quaint small wine villages; the Hospice de Beaune; good cuisine. Yes, we do all this starting in vibrant Lyon, France’s second largest city, and the world’s culinary center. One stop in the Beaujolais region on our way from Lyon to Burgundy shows you that the Gamay grape can produce very good wines. Just north of Chablis we cross into the Champagne region, and we will spend the last two night in the world's capital of bubblies - Épernay. In Paris we have a farewell lunch before we all head into different directions.

GERMANY: the classic Rhein and Mosel regions: Tuesday, September 05 - Thursday, September 14, 2023

We travel along the main wine arteries of Germany: the Rhine river, the Mosel river, and the much smaller Ahr and Nahe rivers. Roman, medieval, and modern history accompany us all the way and will help us to understand what German wine is all about. The beauty of the landscape, the steep vineyards, the romantic Rhine valley, the quaint villages, the stories behind the wineries and their families, and the gorgeous wines we will taste at world-renowned estates will give us a renewed understanding of German wines. This is Riesling country and the spot on the planet where the Riesling grape developed tausend years ago, and subsequently morphed into the best white wine grape for producing crisp, fruity, elegant, delicious wines. There is one exception: the tiny Ahr valley where Pinot Noir always was and still is king. If you are a Riesling fan, this is the ultimate tour for you.

It took us a while to find this place. The beautiful drive ttook us through the densly wooded Black Forest and our GPS stopped working. So, we had to go back to the old method and had to ask people for direction.

Waldgasthof Scherrhof

The historic Scherrhof is a unique place with a very cosy ambiance. It sits in the middle of the woods and you feel like being in a Hänsel and Gretel forest. 

The freshness of the food is outstandig. You will not find any convenience food - everything is made from scratch with local ingrediences – local Badenser cuisine at its best. 

Waldgasthof Scherrhof: Fresh, regional and healthy cuisine. Endless silence, pure nature and fresh forest air are companions of our regional & seasonal, down-to-earth and daily fresh cuisine.

Tripadvisor: Charming with Great Food

We stopped here after a walk through the Black Forest. It's a family run restaurant which has a great menu, friendly service, and great ambiance. It's so out of the way that the customers seem to be mostly hikers and bikers. Without question the food equaled or bettered that of many restaurants in Baden-Baden town. Well worth a visit.

Philipponnat (The Rare Wine Co.)

The corporate changes that have swept through Champagne in recent years seem sure to rob many old houses of their connection to the past. But one small jewel of a house is moving ever closer to its roots: Philipponnat.

It is one of the last houses to be run by a member of its founding family. And Charles Philipponnat is a true Champenois, descended from winemakers, cellarmasters and growers dating back nearly 600 years.

Champagne is in Charles’ blood, which helps to explain Philipponnat’s recent resurgence. Twenty years ago, the house was known largely for one wine: the iconic Clos des Goisses, which in the 1930s became the region’s first important single-vineyard Champagne.

But under Charles, Philipponnat has created a whole portfolio of great wines. These range from two of Champagne’s finest non-vintage bruts—Royale Réserve and Reserve Rosé—to an expanding number of exceptional Champagnes de terroir. And, of course, the offerings culminate in the towering Clos des Goisses. These make for a portfolio that is, as Peter Liem has written, “one of the finest in Champagne.” 

A Philosophical Rebirth

Charles was born to make Champagne. His family grew grapes here as early as 1522, and his father René was chef de caves at Moët from 1949 to 1977—responsible for 1961 Dom Pérignon among other legends.

Since taking over in 1999, Charles has returned Philipponnat to its last Golden Age, 1913-1962, when Louis Boland was chef de caves. Bolands wines were the essence of Pinot Noir from the houses vineyards in the Montagne de Reims. Charles Champagnes also fully exploit these prized vineyards, and the resulting wines revel in their Pinot-infused glory.

Under Charles, Philipponnat’s wines aren’t just more intense, they’re also fresher (due to using only first-pressing Chardonnay). And for more depth and complexity, Charles has gradually increased the amount of wine aging in neutral wood. To maximize their character, the non-vintage wines age for 3 years en tirage, while the vintage cuvées spend from 5 to 10 years on the lees.

Through great vision, technical skill, and perfectionist attention to detail–and the pride of five centuries of tradition–Charles has created a range of Champagnes with few peers for quality and character. This ranges from the towering Clos des Goisses to the superb non-vintage Royale Réserve Brut, Non-Dosé, and Rosé; three of the finest non-vintage Champagnes on the market today. 

Clos des Goisses

Until Krug’s Clos du Mesnil was first made in 1979, Clos des Goisses was the region’s only great single-vineyard wine. From its first vintage in 1935, it was unchallenged as the beacon of terroir in Champagne. It was the sole argument that great Champagne could be made from a single site, rather than a blend of vineyards as had been done for centuries.

Even today, Peter Liem calls Clos des Goisses “arguably the greatest vineyard site in all of Champagne.” British Champagne expert Tom Stevenson says that “there can be no doubt that Clos des Goisses boasts the most climatically distinct, naturally occurring and expressive terroir in Champagne.”

No other Champagne vineyard can match its gifts: an unbroken 30- to 45-degree, fully southfacing slope of pure chalk, backed by a small plateau directly above the Marne River. In warm years the plateau assures balance; in cool years the steep southern slope guarantees ripeness. Charles makes the most of this singularly great terroir, consistently fashioning transcendent wines that are among Champagne’s most coveted cuvées.

And in 1999 Charles produced the first-ever rosé from this hallowed site, Juste Rosé, a cuvée de prestige rosé of unmatched power and depth. Extraordinary from the first release, it has become even deeper and more refined following the decision in 2006 to make it using the saignée method, macerating a portion of the Pinot Noir for color, perfume, and structure.

Cuvée 1522

In 2000, Charles created Cuvée 1522, conceived as a blend of top vineyards representing the soul of the house. Its name commemorates the year that Charles’ family became growers in Aÿ and showcases the Pinot Noir from one of the village’s most-prized vineyards, Le Léon.

This sun-drenched site has, for centuries, produced great Pinot Noir. But, for this prestige cuvée—and, based on his experience making Clos des Goisses—Charles believed that an even greater wine would be made by marrying the richness of approximately 60% Pinot Noir from Le Léon with the minerality of 40% Chardonnay from great Côte des Blancs terroirs. Its profound richness and complexity have quickly placed Cuvée 1522 among Champagne’s elite tête de cuvées. 

More Terroir Magic

Charles’ exploration of Philipponnat’s extraordinary Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir holdings has resulted in three site-specific cuvées of pure Pinot Noir: Le Léon; Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, sourced from two lieux-dits above Clos des Goisses; and Les Cintres, from the warmest plot in the heart of Clos des Goisses. Made in painfully small quantities, with flexible use of fermentation in barrel and long aging en tirage, each is among the region’s most profoundly exciting wines.

Finally, Philipponnat’s vintage blancs de blancs and blanc de noirs are exceptional. Grand Blanc—pure Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, including a small part from Clos des Goisses—beautifully combines minerality and richness. And, the riveting Blanc de Noirs is pure Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims, completing what is today one of Champagne’s the most extraordinary array of wines.

we went to Tertre Rôteboeuf in Saint Emilion, just a stone throw away from the restaurant.

Owner and Winemaker François Mitjavile was our host at Tertre Rôteboeuf. We started the tour in the garden of Tertre Rôteboeuf, with a magnificient view of the vineyards of Tertre Rôteboeuf. We then went down into the tiny cellar of Tertre Rôteboeuf for a tasting from barrel. We finished the visit with a tasting from bottle in the backyard of Tertre Rôteboeuf; François got this bottle from his library. 

We tasted in the cellar: 2021 Tertre Rôteboeuf from barrel and 1994 Roc des Cambes from bottle. We tasted in the backyard: 1995 Tertre Rôteboeuf from bottle.

François Mitjavile is a very articulate and eloquent winemaker, a very cultivated person and a passionate communicator, who likes to illustrate what he wants to say about his wine with parallels from music, art and philosophy. 

François Mitjavile is a maverick, whose wines have become very expensive; unusually in this price category, he does not sell his wines through the “Place de Bordeaux” system.

A recent major article the Vigneron provided an excellent portrait of François Mitjavile.

Tertre-Rôtebœuf

Tertre-Rôtebœuf on the southern edge of Saint-Émilion lies in form of an amphitheater on the pure limestone plateau with phantastic panoramic views of the vineyards in the Dordogne valley. 

We were received by François Mitjavile, the owner of Château Tertre-Rôteboeuf. He is the grand master of fruit expression and delicacy and always one of the best Saint-Émilion producers of recent decades. He is always someone who harvests particularly late, he can deal with terroir like no other.

He never vinifies against the year. At Tertre-Rôtebœuf the ratio is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet-Franc. François Mitjavile is an absolute advocate of ripe fruit, but he never has overripe fruit in the cellar despite the fact that he only harvests in mid-October, much later than other winegrowers. This can only work if you can work well with the foliage and François is the master to keep photosynthesis running at full steam. 

The wines at Tertre-Rôtebœuf always show the character of the Bordeaux vintage. Here the style is lush, plentiful, generous yet fresh. François is an exceptional winemaker, often unconventional in his views with regard to the mainstream wine scene in France. He is a maverick and refuses to take part in any classification system. His wines are brilliant, unique, and simply phenomenal. Since Robert Parker discovered these wines, prices very often exceed the prices of the wines from the premier grand cru classé estates.

Saint-Émilion

Saint-Émilion with around 14,500 acres under vine is the largest winegrowing region of top-notch wines in France. There are two appellations: AOC Saint-Émilion and AOC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru which was only awarded to 85 châteaux (71 Grands Crus and 14 Premiers Grands Crus). In terms of terroir, Saint Émilion is anything but homogeneous. 

As soon as you enter the village, the limestone slopes, the “Côtes”, come into view. The foothills of the Côtes are interspersed with larger portions of sand and gravel. Once at the top you reach the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, with the village prominently sitting in the center of it and visible from afar. With the châteaux Beau-Séjour Bécot, La Mondotte, Troplong-Mondot, Tertre Rôtebœuf, Clos Fourtet, among others, here you find the top wines with the distinguished Saint-Émilion taste profile.



Tertre Rôteboeuf

Tertre Rôteboeuf is one of the finest châteaux in Saint-Emilion. Yet, relatively unknown. Why? First, it is not in the prestigious group of classified châteaux, although its wines are clearly in the same league as those wines that are made by châteauxx that are classified. And, François Mitjavile does not sell his wines through the Place de Bordeaux, but has his own distribution channels. Nor is he a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB). This is as far as I know unique for a Bordeaux producer who is able to sell his wines at a price level at which François Mitjavile does. Obviously, François Mitjavile is far away from St. Emilion mainstream. He does not bother to be included in the prestigious Saint-Emilion classification, he does not sell his wines through the Place de Bordeaux nor does he care about a UGCB membership.

25 years ago, Tertre Rôteboeuf was unknown. But since then, Tertre Rôteboeuf has become a cult wine producer in St. Emilion and the price of Tertre Rôteboeuf has gone up significantly.

Tertre Rôteboeuf looks a bit garagiste - a small estate with a vigneron house build in the 18th century lovingly tended by Miloute and François Mitjavile, two kilometers south-east of the village of Saint-Emilion, not far from Château Troplong Mondot and Château Larcis Ducasse.






History

The origins of Tertre Rôteboeuf lie with a vineyard named Le Tertre that was owned by François Mitjavile's late father-in-law. After he passed away in 1961, the property was inherited by his daughter Miloute. She leased it to her cousins, who owned Château Bellefond-Belcier.

Meanwhile, François Mitjavile was working at his family's successful haulage business. He decided to change course in life and try his hand at winemaking.

Between 1975 and 1977, he went through the school of Château Figeac. When he returned to Le Tertre after the 2 year apprenticeship, he suffixed Rôteboeuf (its literal translation is the unsavory "hill of the belching beef").

1978 was the first vintage that François Mitjavile made entirely by himself. His breakthrough on the wine scene was with the 1985 vintage. Since the 1994 vintage, he removed the word “Châteaux” from the label of his wines.

The Wines

The limestone based vineyards of Tertre Rôteboeuf (5.7 ha) are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot vines are on average 45 years old, while the Cabernet Franc ones are 5 years older.

François Mitjavile's winemaking approach: He picks the grapes as late as possible and maintains low yields. The wine stays on the skins for a long time and is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. The very late harvest combined with long alcoholic fermentation and extraction at 35°C results in a voluptuous, full-bodied, and very complex wine. Super-ripe Merlot is the key.










Roc des Cambes in Cotes de Bourg

Roc de Cambes is a Côtes de Bourg estate and one of the finest producer in the appellation today. François Mitjavile bought it in 1988.

There are 12 hectares of vines, planted with 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. The soil is a blend of chalk and clay. Vines are on average 50 years old. The grapes are harvested as late as possible, and are then vinified in temperature controlled cement vats.

When François Mitjavile bought Roc de Cambes, it was in quite bad shape. But in just a few years, François Mitjavile made Roc de Cambes one of the top producers of the Côtes de Bourg. The second wine labeled - Domaine de Combes - comes under the basic Bordeaux appellation.

Domaine de l’Aurage

Domaine de l’Aurage is the most recent addition of the Mitjavile family. Francois’s son Louis Mitjavile is completely in charge (with his wife Caroline Mitjavile) of the estate. The vineyard area totals 18 hectares, with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Annual production is around 7,500 cases.

Battenfeld-Spanier

Weingut Kühling-Gillot and Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier are jointly owned and run by Carolin Spanier-Gillot and H.O. Spanier. While H.O. Spanier is focussing more on the vineyard and cellar work, Carolin Spanier-Gillot is focussing more on the marketing and administrative work for both estates.

Battenfeld-Spanier (drinkOKwines)

Battenfield-Spanier is co-owned by Carolin Spanier-Gillot and her husband H.O. Spanier. They are located in the Rheinhessen - in northern Germany close to the Rheingau. The Rheinhessen is the largest region in Germany and has over 24,000 hectares (65,000+ acres) and there are tons of different terroirs; historically, it has been more notorious for making wine that is more about quantity than quality.

But that is changing and Carolin & H.O. are leading the charge, from H.O.:

"When I founded my wine estate at the age of 20, restoring soil vitality was one of my most important goals.

The grape vine is an interpreter of the relationship between light and earth. I thought that I could do little to influence light processes, therefore I focused on the soil. The conversion of my vineyards in 1993 to ecological cultivation represented a natural and logical step. To my mind, wine should communicate a direct impression of the soil characteristics of the southern Wonnegau: marled chalk and chalk pebbles, all the way to solid limestone. One should be able to experience and taste the rock.

Riesling is my vision. In the Wonnegau, no grape is able to translate light and soil into wine as precisely or succulently. I judge Riesling’s superficial fruitiness to be only a pretense. It is merely an intermediate phase, before the metamorphosis to a true stone wine begins. In reality, a natural Riesling wine is less fruit, and rather much more herbs, spices, saltiness, and flint. That’s why my primary slogan is LIQUID EARTH."

Kühling-Gillot

Weingut Kühling-Gillot and Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier are jointly owned and run by Carolin Spanier-Gillot and H.O. Spanier. While H.O. Spanier is focussing more on the vineyard and cellar work, Carolin Spanier-Gillot is focussing more on the marketing and administrative work for both estates.

Kühling-Gillot (Howard Ripley)

When Oliver Spanier of Battenfeld-Spanier married Carolin Gillot of Kühling-Gillot in 2016, it brought together two of Rheinhessen’s leading estates, and created its most glamorous couple. The wines are marketed separately, but he is the winemaker for both.

Kühling-Gillot’s prime holdings are on the Roter Hang (red slope), an iron-rich strip between Nierstein and Nackenheim along the Rhine, which includes the vineyards of Hipping, Pettenthal, Ölberg, Rothenberg, and Orbel. There are further vineyards in Oppenheim and Bodenheim.

Battenfeld-Spanier lies in the southern-most part of Rheinhessen, and the vines are grown on limestone, which gives them a lifted, citrus character. The estate converted to organic viticulture in 1992, and biodynamic in 1995. Both of them are now farmed biodynamically. If Prüm made wines in Rheinhessen, this is what they would be like: beautifully pure, restrained, and with the promise of a long life.

In late 2019 Battenfeld- Spanier was given the coveted 5-grape-cluster award by the Gault-Millau guide, while Kühling-Gillot was promoted to 4-grape cluster. They are now amongst the most highly regarded producers in Germany, a fantastic achievement.

Aldinger

Württemberg is a region even more obscure outside Germany than Baden, but it enjoys tremendous renown at home. The first and only producer in Württemberg to be given five stars by Vinum, the family has been established in Fellbach since 1492, both as coopers and wine-growers. In the sure hands of brothers Hansjörg and Matthias Aldinger, they have been propelled into the stratosphere of quality and acclaim.

Aldinger (The Wine Barn)

Around 28% of Aldinger's vineyards are planted with Riesling, followed by a diverse range of both German and international varieties. The family’s flagship vineyard is Untertürkheimer Gips, a former gypsum mine which was converted to viticulture by the family in 1974. Marienglas is a small vineyard-within-a-vineyard, a tiny parcel in Untertürkheimer Gips with an unusually high proportion of a rare form of gypsum known as Marienglas. Aldinger's Rieslings and Spätburgunders that are grown there are elegant and juicy.

Weingut Aldinger (VDP)

The roots of this Fellbach estate stretch back to the 15th century, with each successive generation building seamlessly onto the long winegrowing tradition. The Aldinger family's particular joie de vivre perhaps reflects that long historical perspective. 

Gert Aldinger assumed the helm in 1992, with all the responsibility that comes with 500 years of winegrowing tradition. 15 years later, the estate was already counted among Württemberg's finest, with sons Hansjörg and Matthias beginning their chapter at the forefront. "Working together with nature is the only way to achieve world-class quality. We listen carefully to the needs of our soil, vines and skies," Hansjörg Aldinger proclaims. The grapes and fermenting must are treated as gently as possible throughout the entire vinification. The guiding philosophy of "less is more" has kept them on their ideal path: terroir-driven wines that thrill in the glass.

The restaurant is right at the pedestrian bridge between Tain-l’Hermitage and Tournon-sur-Tain-l’Hermitage.

We all had the menu du jours.  

It was a lovely lunch.

Weingut Schloss Neuweier/ Robert Schätzle is one of the most impressvie wine estates in all of Germany.

Wine has been produced at this 13 th century castle for more than 700 years. About 100 years ago Riesling became the dominant grape and passion. Still today, winemaking takes place in the vaulted cellars that date back to the 17 th century. In 2012 the Schätzle family bought the estate and continues to produce wines of uncompromising quality. Robert Schätzle, the winemaker, studied oenology and comes from a family with a long tradition of winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl region to the south.

The Rieslings grow in the steep (60%) vineyards Schlossberg and Mauerberg which were already terraced in historical times. The narrow terraces only accommodate two rows of vines and have man-high retaining walls of natural stones. This situation makes for a perfect heat storage and shields the cool winds from the Black Forest. This very special microclimate is the basis for the fresh, minerally, racy wines with excellent aromas of citrus and exotic fruit. 

Robert Schätzle was our host. When we arrived, Robert suggested to walk over to the vineyards first. While walking there, he introduced us to the rich history of Schloss Neuweier. We then sat down with Robert for a tasting of the Weingut Schloss Neuweier portfolio.

History

The castle belongs to the few historic buildings from the 12th century that still exist. Die Ritter von Bach were the first who started planting vines and producing wine. All subsequent owners showed interested in winemaking.

Its current shape took the castle, when it was owned by Philipp Kämmerer von Worms, called von Dalberg. During 1548 to 1549, this gentleman created the castle as you can see it today. To remind everyone of his creation he put in the entry portal: Zeyt bryngt Rosen – Time brings Roses.

In 1615, the castle was passed onto the second daughter of Philipp von Dalberg, whose husband was Wolf von Eltz and Knebel von Katzenellenbogen. Katzenellenbogen was a high ranking knight who fought under the rule of the Archbishop of Mainz. He also was an important person in terms of winemaking at Weingut Schloss Neuweier. He brought his knowledge from the Franken area, the Bocksbeutel bottles and the Niersteiner and the Laubenheimer grape varities, which replaced the traditional Elblinger and Ortlieber.

During the 19th century the castle changed its owners quiet frequently. From 1869, the Rößler family from Baden-Baden became the owner of the castle. The Rößler family is responsible for the Mauerberg vineyard gaining international recognition.

The Joos family bought the estate including all the buildings and the vineyard in 1992. With great enthusiasm and financial investments they brought the castle and all the attached buildings back to the full bloom, which you can still admire today. The renovations were completed in 2009.

In 2012, the estate was sold to the family of Robert Schaetzle; they come from a traditional vintners background in the Kaiserstuhl area near Freiburg.


The Vineyards

The heart of the vineyard area (15 hectares) of Weingut Schloss Neuweier are two very steep monopoly sites: Schlossberg and Goldenes Loch.

Robert Schätzle: Schlossberg - This is a monopoly site of 3 hectares of south-facing slopes with up to 55°incline, entirely Riesling. The soil is very special, made up of ground granite, schist, shale and slate. Due to being close to an extinct volcano you also find quartz crystals on the surface. The climate is defined by being on the lower slopes of the Black Forrest Mountains and close to the Rhine plateau and in combination with the soil is ideal growing grounds for Riesling. The Riesling grown here gets a lot of sun during the day and at night the release of the heat that was accumulated during the day in the soil.

Goldenes Loch - Another monopoly site of 1 hectare south-west facing cauldron between the Schlossberg and the Mauerberg. The name was established because of the foliage glowing golden in the autumn sun due to the concave mirror effect caused by the cauldron, catching the last rays of the day. The extreme incline of 60° or more was the main reason it was left alone but in 1993 the land was reclaimed by using small diagonal terraces. The grapes grown here produce exquisite Riesling wines.

Mauerberg: This is a south facing site. Historically, 60% of the Mauerberg was terraced, with each terrace large enough for one or two vines. The man-high natural stone walls contribute to the micro climate for the vines by keeping the warmth during the day as well as being dried be the wind from the Black Forest.

Heiligenstein: The name seems to originate from the Celtic culture stating a magical powerful place, which it is still today. The foundation is full of granite being enjoyed by our young Pinot Noir vines. Here is where we get our very clean, clear classical red wines from.


Robert Schätzle

Robert Schätzle is a very interesting and charming fellow, with curly, almost Afro-style hair and a strong regional southern Baden accent. He lives at the castle with his French wife and one son, if I remember correctly.

Robert did not appeared out of nowhere. He has put in time at serious wineries over the years – at Franz Keller and Dr. Heger in Baden, across the Rhine in Alsace with Zind-Humbrecht and Marc Kreydenweiss, and in Bordeaux at La Tour de By. Before turning to wine, Robert was in academia. He studied at Université Bordeaux Segalen in France.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot has the most beautiful underground cellars of the entire appellation. It is a dream how these cellars were carved into the limestone. 

However, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is in the process of constructing a new wine cellar. As result, our winery tour did not include the wine making facilities and focussed instead on the vineyards. Indeed, our host, Sommelier Loïc Riva, drove us in a golf cart through the vineyards. 

The visit ended with a seated tasting of 3 wines.










Château Beau-Séjour Bécot sits on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. Its history can be traced back to the Middle Ages when the monks of neighboring Saint Martin Abbey were farming the land before the vineyard was divided. After several ownership changes throughout the centuries, Michel Bécot, who came from an old winegrowing family in the area, bought the estate in 1969. In 1985 his sons Gérard and Dominique took over, and since 2014 Gérard’s daughter Juliette and Julien Barthe are at the helm of the château. 

The 44 acres of vineyards are planted with 65% Merlot, 33% Cabernet-Franc, and a tiny amount of Cabernet-Sauvignon. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks ranging in size from 80 to 100 hectoliters following a four day cold maceration. The wines are aged in a combination of used and new barriques. Today some 25% is aged in clay amphora.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot has the most beautiful underground cellars of the entire appellation. It is a dream how these cellars were carved into the limestone. 

This what James Suckling says about the recent vintage: “this wine has a fantastic finish with crushed blackberries and raspberries and salt undertones. It’s full-bodied, yet really racy and polished with such fine, intense tannins. Love the length to this. Very distinguished and toned. Excellent energy. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon.“

we spent the afternoon at Paul Jaboulet Aîné.

We met at the Paul Jaboulet Aîné Restaurant in Tain-Hermitage and went from there to the foot of the Hermitage Hill to take a look at the world-famous Hermiatge hill. 

After the vineyard walk, we enjoyed a high-end tasting at the Paul Jaboulet Aîné Restaurant/ Tasting Room.

Hermitage/ Wine-searcher

Hermitage is a small appellation with 140 hectares (345 acres) of vineyards, responsible for France's most enduringly prestigious wines. These are on a par with those from the Côte Rôtie (30 miles/45km to the north), and Châteauneuf-du-Pape (70 miles/110km to the south). Both red and white Hermitage wines are long-lived and full-bodied.

The red wines, which may be aged for 30 years or more, are often produced exclusively from Syrah, tough regulations permit up to 15 percent of the white grape varieties Marsanne and Roussanne. They are known for their robustness and rich aromas of leather, coffee and red berries.

The whites are less famous than the reds, but do account for about one third of AOC Hermitage's annual production. They can usually be cellared for about 15 years, have aromas of honeysuckle, tropical fruit and earthy minerals. They are made predominantly from Marsanne, with limited use of Roussanne.

The whole of the granite hillside where the Hermitage vineyards are planted faces south, overlooking a short section where the river Rhône flows west to east, not north to south. This orientation means that the grapes benefit from the maximum amount of sunlight throughout the day. The town of Tain l'Hermitage sits between the vineyard slopes and the water.

The Hermitage zone is bordered to the north by the vineyards of AOC Crozes-Hermitage. These vines are sited in flatter areas, with varying exposures, and the north-facing side of the hill of Hermitage.

The topsoil on the slopes is relatively thin compared to that of the valley floor. There are a wide variety of soil types – ranging from sandy gravel in the west, to rockier areas higher up and limestone in the center. As intense Rhône sunshine warms the hillside during the day, the granite bedrock stores this heat, encouraging the grapes to ripen more fully than those in less-exposed sites. The effect of the local terroir is most pronounced on the western side of the hill; it is steeper than the east and enjoys prolonged exposure to afternoon sunshine.

The appellation is divided into a number of vineyards. Les Bessards is at the western end, while Bessards, Le Méal, Les Greffieux and Murets lie to the east. L'Hermite and La Chapelle take up the top of the slope. The latter is named after a chapel built in honor of Saint Christopher which is owned by the negociant firm Paul Jaboulet Aîné, whose top cuvée is La Chapelle. The appellation takes its name from the legend of the crusading knight Gaspard de Stérimberg, who returned home, wounded, from the Albigensian Crusade in 1224. He was allowed by the Queen of France to build a small refuge on the hillside, where he lived as a hermit.

Jaboulet is one of four producers who rather dominate the appellation in terms of vineyard ownership. Two are also negociant firms; Delas Frères (now owned by Louis Roederer) and M. Chapoutier. The other is Domaine Jean-Louis Chave.

The prestige of Hermitage (sometimes Ermitage) wine can be clearly traced back to the 17th Century, when it was an official wine in the French courts of King Louis XIII and his successor Louis XIV, the "Sun King". Not just the monarchs' preferred wine, it was also used as a gift for visiting dignitaries and foreign royalty. It was no less respected across the English Channel, as confirmed by Thomas Shadwell's comedy of 1680, 'The Woman-Captain'. In the play's opening scene, the wealthy Sir Humphrey and his friend Bellamy cite 'Champaign and Burgundy...and Hermitage' wines as superior to those of 'Langoon and Burdeaux' which they deem suitable only for 'porters and carriers'. Sir Humphrey later boasts 'I do confess I am an epicurean'. The wine's high status remained untouched for a full two centuries after this. It peaked in the mid-19th Century, just as the famous wines of Bordeaux's Médoc were beginning their rise to stardom.

Before the name "Hermitage" was granted international legal protection, it was used by wineries in various regions around the world, valued for its connotations of high quality. A high-profile example is Australia's famous 'Penfolds Bin 95 Grange', which was labeled as 'Grange Hermitage' right up until 1989.








High-end Tasting at Paul Jaboulet Aîné

After the vineyard walk, we enjoyed a high-end tasting at the Paul Jaboulet Aîné Restaurant/ Tasting Room.

Paul Jaboulet Aîné is the smallest of the big négociants businesses of the Rhône region. Jaboulet is a great old name and one of the historic estates in the Rhône. Exactly 100 years before the AOC system was established, in 1834 Antoine Jaboulet began to transform a sleepy region into one of the most important wine regions of the world and Jaboulet has since become a benchmark in the Northern Rhône. The iconic vineyard site “La Chapelle”, visible from afar because of the chapel in the middle of the vineyard high on the Hermitage hill, belongs to Jaboulet. 

In 2006 the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in the Médoc, acquired Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Since then the Freys have started a forceful expansion, increasing the domaine vineyard sites to almost 300 acres with purchases in the Northern Rhône as well as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 

Winemaker Caroline Frey also started converting the domaine vineyards to biodynamic principles and encouraged the growers they buy grapes from to convert to organic or sustainable vineyard management. Jaboulet wines belong once again to the best of the Rhône Valley wines.vv

Paul Jaboulet Aîné/ FICOFI

The firm of Jaboulet was founded in 1834, and today it owns 114.20 hectares of vines in the best appellations of the Rhône Valley, principally in the northern Rhône in Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Joseph and Condrieu, and since 2006 in Côte-Rôtie.

Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné was created through the magical conjunction of a fertile land on a hillside by the Rhone and a family with a passion for winemaking. In 1834, when Antoine Jaboulet set up his business in Tain l’Hermitage with the aim of producing great wines, he saw his future profession as limited to cultivating the vineyards and maintaining the quality of the land. It was with this mindset that he quickly acquired his first vineyards on the Hermitage slopes and the Crozes-Hermitage plains. The six generations who followed him, including his sons Paul and Henry and, later, the celebrated Gérard, adopted an identical approach. Over the years, Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aîné thereby took ownership of the finest appellations of the northern Rhone Valley. These included Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage, of course, but also Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In 2006, the Freys, a family of long standing in the Champagne region and owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux, took over Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Caroline, the eldest daughter of the family, who has a degree in oenology from Bordeaux, works with her team in a single-minded quest for perfection. Their cutting-edge winemaking, combined with the scrupulous care given to vines grown in exceptional terroirs, encourages one to believe that the greatest vintages are yet to come. The vineyards acquired in the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are following in the historic Jaboulet tradition.

Under Caroline’s leadership, in 2006, the vineyards earned Sustainable Farming status while Jaboulet's winegrowing is slowly but surely progressing towards biodynamic certification. Horses, winches, cultivators and pickaxes are now used to dig over each plot, however steep. This enables the roots to delve as deeply as possible into the rock. The grapes are rigorously inspected and every last detail is subject to scrupulous examination. Quality is the sole criterion for Caroline and her team of winegrowers.

In this quest for perfection, a new gravity-operated cellar has been set up for the 2010 vintage. Here the grapes are handled with the utmost care. Hand-picked and placed in little crates, two lifts are used to raise the grape bunches. The Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc white grapes are poured manually into the presses, which then allow the juice to flow naturally through gravity into small stainless steel vats. The fermenting must is then sent to the air-conditioned, humidified white wine store for storage in casks or in enormous 16hl concrete eggs. Meanwhile, the Syrah and Grenache grapes, which are less vulnerable to oxidation, are painstakingly selected on multiple sorting tables (sorting of bunches and then individual grapes) before slipping as gently as possible down to the vats, via lightly sloping stainless steel shafts. When alcoholic and malolactic fermentation is complete, the wines are improved in the spectacular red wine store. Syrah wines gain in complexity in French oak barrels (20% new wood) whereas Grenache is better suited to aging in truncated cone-shaped 80hl vats.

The jewel in the Jaboulet collection has always been the legendary ‘La Chapelle’ Hermitage, a great red wine made purely from Syrah, which owes its name to the famous little Saint Christophe chapel, which overlooks the Hermitage vineyards. ‘La Chapelle’, which has been solely owned by Paul Jaboulet Aîné since 1919, is made by blending grapes from the best terroirs in the appellation (Méal, les Bessards, les Rocoules etc.). ‘La Chapelle’ Hermitage 1961 has been ranked among the twelve greatest wines of the 20th century and it racked up the third highest price ever recorded worldwide for a 12-bottle lot sold by Christie’s.

Abstract: Most wine regions have strict regulations with regard to acidity levels, residual sugar, alcohol levels, and in particular, desired tasting profiles of the finished wine. The resulting certification is without doubt a very important orientation instrument for the consumer. There are more and more wine artists around the globe who have the passion to create a wine in freedom, independent of agricultural industry aids and recommendations from a laboratory. Today we explored the Kaiserstuhl region. It is a very special place in the German wine regions landscape. We visited 3 producers: Weingut Dr. Bercher, Weingut Höfflin and Weingut Dr. Heger, before moving on to Alsace.

Kaiserstuhl Region

Importer Schatzi Wines: The Kaiserstuhl (named for its resemblance to an emperor’s throne) is a compact zone of some 10,000 acres of vines planted around the stump of an extinct volcano. It rises above the Rhine river valley, just east of Alsace. Geologically speaking, it is a rare place indeed. Volcanoes formed here during the late Tertiary period, at the end of a long succession of eruptions, starting in the Cretaceous. Heavily eroded volcanic vents mark the landscape and the rocks that remain are of the Miocene, dating 16 to 19 million years before the present. These volcanic rocks are of alkali-carbonate structure and contain elements of magnesium iron silicate, which can be found here as the gem peridot, a crystalline material that weathers slowly and provides good drainage.

We started the day with a visit of Weingut Bercher (VDP) in Burkheim, Kaiserstuhl, Baden. Martin Bercher was our host. He showed us the wine cellar and led a seated tasting.



Weingut Bercher

The history of the Bercher family in the Kaiserstuhl region can be traced back to 1457 when the family moved from Switzerland to Burkheim after the end of the Thirty Year War. In 1756 Franz-Michael Bercher built the manor house with the vaulted underground cellar which has since been the seat of the winery. Today it is the 10 th generation of the Bercher family, brothers Martin (vineyard manager) and Arne (winemaking) that is at the helm of the estate. 

The 62 acres of vineyards are planted mostly with Burgundy grapes: 40% Pinot Noir, 23% Pinot Gris, 17% Pinot Blanc, some Chardonnay and also some Rieslings. 

The Kaiserstuhl region is the warmest grape growing area in Germany and the soils consist of mineral-rich, chalky loess on top of volcanic subsoils. 

Weingut Bercher belongs to the top estates in Germany with 4 stars (out of 5) in the 2018 Vinum wine guide for Germany. They also have an eclectic portfolio of grape varieties including pinot noir, pinot gris, pinot blanc, chenin blanc, scheurebe, riesling, muscat and chardonnay.

VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Martin Bercher: Certainly the long family tradition. We are the tenth generation of winegrowers here. And the history of the Berchers can be traced back even further, to 1457 to be precise. The coat of arms you see on our labels also dates from this period. The family was then based in Switzerland, and after the Thirty Years' War they moved to Kaiserstuhl in Burkheim. Apropos Burkheim: The location of our winery in Burkheimer Mittelstadt is something I would definitely call something special. Such a well-preserved historical town centre is not very common in Germany, but the small town has remained very small and lies very picturesquely in the cultural landscape of the Kaiserstuhl. Right in the middle of the middle town is our main building, which was built in 1756. It has an imposing wooden barrel cellar with a three-volute cross vault in which we still work.

Arne Bercher: Well, and certainly the Kaiserstuhl itself must also be one of our specialities. This is truly a unique landscape, which is not only beautiful, but also has a very special climate and flora and fauna. And of course the western Kaiserstuhl has the volcanic soils to which our winery owes its top sites, the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Burkheimer Feuerberg as well as the VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® HASLEN and the KESSELBERG. Many who know our wines will certainly think of the Feuerberg at Bercher.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy? Which wine style do you aim for?

Martin Bercher: For us, the artisanal approach to wine making is important. To make a good wine, it takes a lot of careful manual work. To this end, we try to combine what previous generations have given us in terms of knowledge with modern technology. As a result, the wines should taste, simply put, "like Kaiserstuhl". Soil embossing therefore plays a major role. We strive for a good storability according to the classification level and always see good wines as a food companion. We therefore make sure that the wines are not too powerful, but always retain their elegance.

Arne Bercher: The drinking flow is also important, so the wine should not only impress at the first sip, but also give pleasure at the second or third glass ... I think that this style can be tasted very well from our Pinot Gris. The Pinot Gris also makes the race as our favourite grape variety.

"THE FLOW OF THE DRINK IS IMPORTANT, SO THE WINE SHOULD NOT ONLY IMPRESS AT THE FIRST SIP, BUT ALSO GIVE JOY AT THE SECOND OR THIRD GLASS."

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery - as an introduction, so to speak?

Arne Bercher: When it comes to demonstrating our basic approach with a wine, I would say: The Burkheimer Feuerberg Grauburgunder VDP.ERSTE LAGE®. For me, this is the prototype of a Pinot Gris from the volcanic weathered soil of the Kaiserstuhl.

VDP: Which wine are you particularly proud of?

Martin Bercher: Hm, good question ... This will probably be a photo finish between the HASLEN Pinot Gris GG and the KESSELBERG Pinot Noir GG. They have been fighting for first place for quite some time ...

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Arne Bercher: The most important impulse certainly came from the generation before us, who lived the profession with passion. All energy was put into getting the best out of the vineyard and the cellar. This intensive and even successful work has already been very impressive. Of course, later there were still very important suggestions and encounters in the training companies, during studies or during stays abroad. Besides, this job is just fun. At the end of the winegrowing year there is a product that has a lot to do with the person who is responsible for it. You have the opportunity to develop your own style and perhaps also yourself, you can try out many things and are in a stimulating exchange with good colleagues.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Martin Bercher: The old is not good simply because it is old, and the same applies to the new. A conscious cultivation of tradition can certainly protect you from simply following every new trend. This gives the work a certain stability and continuity. But of course there is nothing that cannot be improved. At the same time, change must not be made simply for the sake of change. Both tradition and innovation must therefore always be questioned anew, neither has its justification in itself. The one can thus serve as a corrective for the other, so to speak. Among the traditions worth preserving are certainly the selective hand-picking and the ageing in large wooden barrels.

Domaine G&J Bott

We first encountered the young Kiwi, Graeme Bott, in the days when he and Julie were both working for the great Stéphane Ogier. We have kept in touch and 8 years later we are delighted that he and Julie are now married and have set up on their own. 2018 is their second vintage release and we could not be more excited.

Graeme's talents as a winemaker were never in doubt. To have become Chef de Cave for Stéphane Ogier is no mean feat, especially for someone from the 'outside' and New Zealand is a long way from Ampuis! This natural ability combined with relentless energy and creativity from them both has resulted in Domaine Bott.

'Les Kiwis d'Ampuis' have been resourceful in finding plots for vineyards. As newcomers they were never really in the market for buying existing, established vineyards. Prices here are now stratospheric. So, they got creative. First of all, their garden! This plot of land is within the Condrieu appellation, so they quickly planted vines and have a parcel here. In other zones they have studied the geology and history of the slopes in the northern Rhone. Identifying areas of rough land that were once vineyards, pre-phylloxera, but have since never been replanted. These plots were affordable, so the couple planted all the vines themselves and rebuilt the old stone walls. Today the estate has grown to 6HA through this resourcefulness and sheer hard work.

Their vineyards are now spread between Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Seyssuel - and they have recently moved production from their two garages to a winery in Ampuis.

They want to make wines they want to drink and love finesse and poise. This means early picking of the white grapes to retain brightness and acidity and only 3 or 4-year-old barrels are used for the élévage.

Vineyard work on the reds is intensive - Graeme believes that wines are mostly 'made' before the harvest, on the vines. For the Botts, it’s all about the purity of the fruit and transmitting that sense of place. In the cellar they have an artisan approach, very gentle maceration - more of an infusion with a gentle single pump over each day, no punching down or effort to extract more grip or colour or flavour. The wines are a delight. There is a sleek feel and a softness that belies the smart intensity. They have lift and poise. Never over-bearing but they make you sit up and take note.

On this first UK release of these wines you can see the sheer class of what they are doing here. These are impressive, very likeable wines made on a small scale by a passionate and very skilled couple - it is no wonder they are already turning heads.

Domaine Bott

Julie Bott was born in the Northern Rhône Valley and Graeme Bott is from New Zealand. They met in the small village of Ampuis while working for Stephane Ogier, a producer in Côte-Rôtie. Their passion for wine was the motivation behind the decision to create their own wine estate in the Northern Rhône Valley and together they planted Viognier and Syrah vines in the appellations of CONDRIEU, CÔTE-RÔTIE, SAINT-JOSEPH and SEYSSUEL.

Initially Graeme and Julie transformed their own garage into a cellar to make their first three vintages, but have now expanded to a cellar in Ampuis, where their goal is to let the terroir of schist and granite express itself fully in their work. Graeme and Julie produce only micro-volumes of wine and favor quality over quantity.

In 2019, Graeme and Julie were named Winemakers & Terroirs of the Future ("Vignerons et Terroirs d'Avenir") by the AdVini Group, in partnership with the Montpellier SupAgro Foundation. This award includes a monetary investment as well as training sessions with AdVini experts.

Graeme and Julie are fiercely passionate about preserving and honoring the incredible terroir they call home and have made a commitment to growing their grapes using sustainable and organic farming practices.





Et Voila

Right along MacArthur Boulevard in the Palisades gleams one of DC’s jewels, the Belgian eatery Et Voila! It’s a saucy, sassy bistro with solid cooking and elegant pastries, all put together by the Belgian and French partners. The place is a labor of love, one that they re-created from the ground up from a former drab restaurant. A once small setting was subsequently expanded, and includes a counter for take-out treats. Crowds pack in, and they don’t mind long waits to enjoy the onion soup, the various versions of moules (curry; beer and corn; garlic and white wine; tomatoes, saffron and Ricard liquor), the rich carbonnade à la flamande (in luscious dark beer) or hanger steak with green peppercorn sauce. Some dishes come with the requisite frites, but if not, these are worth a side order along with the braised endives. Hearty fare it is, but classic desserts merit a few extra calories. Don’t miss the chocolate mousse or the Alex Cake. Choose from a selection of heady Belgian beers.

When we visited Château Dassault, they were in the middle of the harvest and we spent some time watching the reception of the fruit at the estate. Managing Director Romain Depons then took us on a tour of the wine making facilties. The visit ended with a tasting.








The origins of Château Dassault go back to 1850 when a member of the Fourcaud family founded the wine estate in Saint-Émilion and named it Château Couperi. The Fourcaud family is best known for creating Chateau Cheval Blanc. 

In 1955 Marcel Dassault purchased the estate and renamed it Château Dassault. Over the years tremendous investments have been undertaken to completely renovate the buildings and the drainage system, to improve methods and equipment necessary for vinification and ageing, and we well as revamping the vineyards. 

The improvement in the quality of the wines was rewarded in 1969 with the classification as a Grand Cru Classé. The family fortune comes from the airline industry, they are the owners of Dassault aviation. The Dassault family continues to own and manage Chateau Dassault. The family maintains a strong relationship with Château Lafite-Rothschild, as their wines are aided in their distribution by Lafite Rothschild. 

Today it is Laurent Dassault, grandson of Marcel, who manages the estate with the support of Managing Director Romain Depons, who hosted us. 

The vineyards in the northern part of Saint-Émilion with their sand, clay, and chalk soils are planted with Merlot, Cabernet-Franc, and Cabernet-Sauvignon. The vineyards and the cellars are treated with respect for nature. The guidelines of the Système de Management Environnemental (SME) in Bordeaux have been in force since 2013. Château Dassault is classified as HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale).

In 2002, the dassault family became owner of its closest neighbour, Château La Fleur, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Annette and I attended an "Discover Oltrepò Pavese" wine luncheon at Cafe Milano in Georgetown/ Washington DC. We enjoyed the excellent food and wines.

Every town, no matter its size, has a bar or restaurant where the powerful gather to hold court. Washington has Cafe Milano. It has been a destination for high-ranking members of media and of governments around the world since it opened in November 1992, on the same day Bill Clinton, now a Cafe Milano regular, was first elected president. It is a place where diners can enjoy relative privacy as they dine on grilled calamari and velvety burrata.

Oltrepò Pavese

Oltrepo Pavese DOC (meaning Pavia across the Po) is perhaps the most traditional wine zone in Italy’s northernmost region, Lombardy. It is located in close proximity to Milan, and borders the regions Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont. Similar to Piedmont, this area was for centuries under the rule of the House of Savoy. Evidence of its viticultural heritage goes back at least 3000 years – a dated imprint of a cluster of grapes was once found on a sandstone rock in the district. 

The vineyards of the Oltrepo zone sit among the foothills between the Apennines and the river Po in the provinces of Alessandria, Genoa and Piacenza. The vines benefit from an excellent microclimate (thanks to its proximity to the Po), well-drained soils rich in clay and calcareous marl, and a terroir often compared to that of Barolo. 

Oltrepo produces more than half of the wine coming from Lombardy and is not far behind Asti and Chianti in terms of volume of production. The area is also considered the Pinot Noir capital of Italy, as there are almost 9880 acres (4000ha) of this variety under vine. Although the climate here can lead to this grape ripening too early, it is well suited to the Pinot Noir needed for the sparkling wines; picked at the early stages of skin ripeness, Pinot Noir displays a good balance of acidity and sugar required for these wines. 

There are 20 wines under this classification, using both traditional and innovative methods. On the traditional side are the rosso (also as a riserva), rosato, Buttafuoco and the frizzante semi-sweet Sangue di Guida, meaning Judas's Blood (legend has it that the friars from this area believed this local wine to be a 'naughty' wine because of its aphrodisiacal effects). All these styles are produced from a traditional blend of Barbera and Croatina (locally known as Uva Rara or Bonarda). 

The white protagonists are Malvasia and Moscato, which are produced as sweet and sparkling versions, with a minor role played by Cortese. Moscato also plays a role in the liquoroso and passito. On the innovative side are the spumante and still wines made from non-native grapes. The leading varieties for the reds are Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Nero; the wines are often barrel matured in small barriques (French barrels). The whites favor Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling Italico, Riesling and Pinot Nero. 

The spumante is made in the traditional method (metodo classico) or fermented in an autoclave (an Italian method) whereby Pinot Nero is vinified as a white, with the possible additions of up to 30% Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. Sparkling Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico was awarded its own DOCG classification in 2007.

Domaine Les Bruyères has been in the Reynaud family since the 18th century. In 1955, Georges Reynaud planted vines on a gentle slope along the Isère River –a Rhône tributary - in the southern sector of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The grapes were sold to the cooperative. 

In 2003 George’s grandson David took over. He constructed modern wine making facilities, and produced his first vintage. He also bought new vineyards bringing the domaine up to 50 acres under vine. Before his ownership in 2003 David already controlled the domaine and had started to farm organically, so the domaine was certified by Ecocert the same year as his first harvest. He then converted slowly to biodynamic principles and Domaine Les Bruyères received its Biodyvin certification in 2005. 

David Reynaud and his wife were our hosts. A major construction project is currently going on at Domaine Les Bruyères. We started the visit with a quite extensive tasting of the  Domaine Les Bruyères portfolio and then toured the wine cellar.

From time to time, David comes to Washington to promote his wines. In particular, I remember a very lively winemaker dinner with him at BToo a few years ago.

The Crozes Hermitage vineyard, in the North of Rhone Valley, territory of the Syrah grape variety, is among of the rare homogeneous appellations; the winegrowers stay grouped and continue to well progress above the minimum quality level. It is quite rare for the French AOC. We can note that the newcomers, like Marceline and David Reynaud, join the group with the same demand from their first vintage. Organic vineyards certified by ECOCERT, modern winery and functional cellar are the main elements that help David Reynaud to make products of quality.
