Pictures: Raffaele Fazio, Annette Schiller and Christoph Wolber - Winemaker Dinner with Christoph Wolber of New-wave Producer Weingut Wasenhaus, Baden, at Schaumahl, Offenbach/ Frankfurt, 16 Points Gault Millau, Germany

Restaurant SchauMahl in Offenbach, in the greater Frankfurt am Main area, is one of the best restaurants in the region. With Chef Björn Andreas, Restaurant SchauMahl has been at the 16 points Gault Millau rating for a number of years, which was confirmed recently in the Gault Millau Deutschland 2019.

With a charming service, Esra Egner and Raffaele Fazio make sure that you feel good at Restaurant SchauMahl.

Pictures: Arriving at SchauMahl

Restaurant SchauMahl runs an interesting series of winemaker dinners. If I am in town (Frankfurt) I always book immediately, because these dinners sell out very fast.

This time, Winemaker/ Owner Christoph Wolber (with Partner Alexander Götze) of new-wave, minimal intervention producer Weingut Wasenhaus, Baden, was at Schaumahl, Offenbach/ Frankfurt. As usual, Chef Björn Andreas and his team prepared an outstanding menu. The service of Esra Egner and Raffaele Fazio was top.

Interestingly, Weingut Wasenhaus, a small producer, is available in the USA, through Vom Boden in New York City. In fact, roughly half of the (small) output is sent ot the USA.

In the Frankfurt area, Weingut Wasnehaus, is distributed through Cool Climate, Berliner Strasse 20.

Pictures: Welcome

Weingut Wasenhaus (Vom Boden)

I’ve had two mind-blowing “wow” moments with German Pinot Noir. Once with Enderle & Moll, tasting their first release in 2008. And now, with Wasenhaus, tasting their first releases last year (2018).

One revelation every decade, I guess.

Alex Götze and Christoph Wolber, two Germans, were bitten by the same Burgundy-bug and ended up meeting each other in Beaune, both on their own wine-pilgrimage. Alex was born and raised in the area of Dresden and came to wine through architecture. Christoph was raised in Baden and a bottle of Bernard van Berg was so compelling that he ended up just jumping on his motorcycle and heading east.

Picture:Christoph Wolber and Alexander Götze

Over a period of five-plus years, both garnered pretty serious Burgundian credentials, working at Comte Armand, Bernard van Berg, Leflaive, de Montille, Pierre Morey and Domaine de la Vougeraie. Alex, in fact, remains the vineyard manager for de Montille.

How can he work for de Montille and be involved in winemaking in Baden? The holy land of Pinot Noir is only about two-and-a-half hours due south east from Baden y’all, just FYI.

Now, I do not want this to be yet another vague and salesy essay about how Baden can make Burgundian wines; at the same time, the similarity in geography and, in some cases, soil type should also not be ignored. In any event, in this case, the geographical proximity allows Wasenhaus to exist.

Pictures: The Dinner

As for the wines, the measured introduction would be something like: these are among the most talked-about wines in Germany and they deserve this status. Honestly, I’ve had few people taste these wines and not have an eyebrow raise or a jaw drop. They are not only that good, but they are that obviously good.

Similar to Enderle & Moll, the Wasenhaus Pinot Noirs show an uncommon lightness and clarity; a finesse that embarrasses just about all other German Pinot Noirs. While Enderle & Moll tends to present more tense, a bit more structured and wild, the Wasenhaus wines are ultra-fine, with a textural elegance that is second to none. If Enderle & Moll is punk rock; Wasenhaus is chamber music – one isn’t better than the other, but they are very different.

While the Pinot Noirs are showstoppers, the Weissburgunders, for me at least, are revelatory.

The focus at Wasenhaus (thus named after the farm that Christoph grew up at, focusing on horses and not wine) is old vines, old clones, and in general curious parcels that dot the landscape of southern Baden (check out the map, to the right). Alex and Christoph seek out vineyards that have been ignored because they are too hard to work, because the yields are too low, for whatever quirky reason.

The farming is organic with elements of biodynamics woven in. They own very small plots near Staufen (this is where the farm “Wasenhaus” is located) and buy grapes from specific farmers and specific plots in the Kaiserstühl (again, the map may be useful here). The winemaking is low intervention. The white wines are all whole-cluster pressed with a basket press; the élevage is in neutral barrels of varying sizes. The reds are fermented in open-top vats and then aged in neutral barrels as well. Only natural yeasts are used, and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Sulfur is used only at bottling and minimally.

Please keep in mind that Alex and Christoph are farming only around a hectare and a half. I think we got the majority of their production, but this amounted to just over a pallet of wine (50 cases). So while these wines are worth the trouble to find, keep in mind finding them will be some trouble. Our apologies there. Small growers, big problems ya know?

If you’d like to be put on the mailing list to be alerted to when we receive any Wasenhaus wines, please email us at info at vomboden dot com.

Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Château de Pommard in Pommard, Côte de Beaune - Bourgogne (and Champagne) Tour by ombiasy WineTours 2018, France

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Château de Pommard in Pommard, Côte de Beaune

Founded in 1726, Château de Pommard remains one of the most iconic wine estates in Burgundy. To the domaine belongs the monopole site Clos Marey-Monge, at the heart of the domain. In July 2015, UNESCO declared the Clos a World Heritage protected climat of Burgundy. The 20 hectares clay and limestone rich terroir makes it the largest and most interesting monopole in the Côte d’Or.

Etienne Payet, Deputy Onsite Sales Manager, was our host. We toured the Clos Marey-Monge vineyard, visited the winemaking facilities and termined the visit with a tasting.

Following the visit of Château de Pommard we went back to the hotel in Beaune. Time to wind down in the hotel or having a pre-dinner aperitif at one of the many wine bars in Beaune. Annette and I went to our favorite wine bar in Beaune, Bistrot du Coin.

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Château de Pommard in Pommard, Côte de Beaune

Château de Pommard

Château de Pommard's origins began in 1726 when Vivant Micault, a secretary to King Louis XV, began constructing Château Micault, as it is known now, near the ruins of the 11th century fortress of Odo I, Duke of Burgundy. Château Micault, built from Chassagne-Montrachet pink limestone, was designed by Parisian architect, Charles-Étienne Brisseaux, in the Regency style of the era.

In 2003, after almost 80 years of Laplanche Family stewardship, Château de Pommard found itself under new proprietors – this time, the Giraud family, from Haute Savoie. Maurice Giraud transformed Château de Pommard into a 21st century wine tourist destination.

Since 2014, the estate is owned and managed by the Carabello-Baum family from the USA. Michael Baum, innovator, entrepreneur, and pioneer of big data in the Silicon Valley purchased Château de Pommard in 2014 after a nine-year search for the perfect place to make wine. He invested heavily in the vineyards, the cellars, the overall image of the estate, in wine education, and in geological studies of the different climats of the Clos Marey-Monge and other Burgundy climats. Within two years Château de Pommard has undergone a remarkable transformation. With winemaker Emmanuel Sala they started to convert to biodynamic winemaking in 2016.

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Château de Pommard in Pommard, Côte de Beaune

To best describe the philosophy of this estate I quote: “We have three simple ambitions: to always work in harmony with the laws of nature, maintain a hands-off approach and let the vintage do all the talking. That's it. Embracing sustainability and biodynamic viticulture is not just about making succulent and delectable wines, it’s about making a connection with our planet and letting it know that we will do our absolute best to take care of it.”

Portfolio

Simone

Simone’s terroir is the soul of Clos Marey-Monge. Only half a hectare in size, Simone was classified première cuvée by Jules Lavalle in 1855. In 2009, Claude and Lydia Bourguignon’s scientific study confirmed Simone’s soils are, in fact, equal to those of a Grand Cru, and proudly show off one of the highest recorded clay densities in Burgundy.

Clos Marey-Monge Monopole

Each of Clos Marey-Monge's seven plots – Simone, Chantrerie, Les Paules, Grand Champ, 75 Rangs, Micault and Émilie – has its own soil type and microclimate. Simone and Chantrerie contain two of the highest clay density levels recorded in Burgundy.

The south-east facing vines of the vineyard spans 20 hectares in surface area and is enclosed within a two-meter-tall and 2,000-meter-long stone fortress wall, erected in 1812 by Nicolas-Joseph Marey-Monge. With 150 million years of geology forming the fundamental building blocks of its soils Clos Marey-Monge today sits on an alluvial fan known as the Avant-Dheune Valley dejection cone, a geological structure that presents helpful conditions for the notoriously demanding Pinot Noir varietal to flourish.

Clos Marey-Monge was awarded première cuvée status in Professor Jules Lavalle's The History and Statistics of the Great Wines of the Côte d'Or, a comprehensive classification of the region's soils, first published in 1855. Since 2016, and in collaboration with Biodynamic Specialist, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, Clos Marey-Monge is both biodynamically and sustainably farmed.

Vivant

Produced from the youngest vines of Clos Marey-Monge, but born from terroir that has been cultivated for a millennia, Vivant Micault is bursting with energy, yet tamed with elegance. Even our youngest vines are now matured older than 30 years and are now behaving at their very best.

Côte de Nuits

Our Côte de Nuits wines represent the very best of the northern region of the Côte d’Or. From Gevrey-Chambertin to Nuits-Saint-Georges, our signature winemaking technique creates the purest expression of each terroir and vintage.

Côte de Beaune

Côte de Beaune is the southern part of the Côte d’Or and the place we call home. Our friendly relationships with our neighboring appellations enables us to produce wines from the beautiful villages that surround Pommard, including Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet, Ladoix, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay.

Tasting

We termined the visit with a tasting.

Wein-Plus/ Marcus Hofschuster: Germany - Best Collections and Discoveries of the Year (Tasting Season 2018/ 2019)

Picture: Tour and Wine Tasting with Lunch, with Mark Barth at Wein- und Sektgut Barth in Hattenheim, Rheingau– Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015)

Marcus Hofschuster is Editor-in-Chief and Lead Taster of Wein-Plus, a leading European on-line wine guide, based in Germany. Marcus Hofschuster is the man behind the reputation that Wein-Plus has gained over the past 2 decades. All wines are tasted blind. Marcus Hofschuster uses the 100 points scale.

Recently, Marcus Hofschuster summarized his tasting results during the past 12 months by releasing a list of "Kollektionen und Entdeckungen des Jahre"/ "Best Collections and Discoveries of the Year" in the 13 German wine regions.

He provided short comments on the winners, which I translated into English.

Picture: "Sam" Marcus Hofschuster

Collections and Discoveries of the Year (Tasting Season 2018/2019)

Marcus Hofschuster: The "Collection of the Year" title is no longer awarded to the winemaker who produces the best of wines in the region. This has led to many repetitions in the past and both the readers and the producers themselves slowly and understandably lost interest in their recurring titles. Today, we give this award to winemakers who produce at the highest quality level and have duringt the past 12 months attracted our attention with their wine portfolio.

The "Discovery of the Year" is awarded to those wineries that have recently caught our eye in the respective area due to the greatest leap in quality and that we can only recommend to every wine lover who wants to get to know the new, not yet well-known top winegrowers.

The Winners (2018/2019)

Ahr

Collection of the Year: Weingut Meyer-Näkel

It is always the finesse that distinguishes very good from first class wines. In the Spätburgunder wines of Dörte and Meike Näkel we discover, in addition to the usual force and substance, subtleties as they are not often found in the Ahr valley.

Pictures: Vineyard Walk and Tasting at Weingut Meyer-Näkel in Dernau, Ahr, with Dörte Näkel– Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015)

Baden

Collection of the Year: Weingut Berhard Huber

Everything has changed here - and yet nothing. Julian Huber did not have much time to accept a legacy that was almost larger than life: to guarantee the best Spätburgunder and Chardonnays in the country. It was not too big for him.

Discovery of the Year: Weingut Claus Schneider

A winery that every Burgundian friend should discover, even if he or she has to make a pilgrimage to the south-western corner of Germany: Whether red or white, everything is right from the base to the top. And: do not forget the Gutedel!

Franken

Collection of the Year: Bürgerspital zum Hl. Geist

So independent, full of character and finesse we have not yet experienced the wines of the Bürgerspital. It took a decade, now Robert Halle has made it: the winery is back at the top of Franconia. One can assume that it stays there.

Pictures: Bürgerspital. See: Schiller’s Favorites: 2 Legendary Wine Taverns in Würzburg– Juliusspital and Bürgerspital

Discovery of the Year: Weingut Stefan Bardorf

So far, the winery has been known for its noble sweet wines. In 2015, Stefan Bardorf has started to convert to organic farming and the quality of dry wines has risen dramatically. Randersacker is not short of premium producers. Now it is even less short.

Mosel

Collection of the Year: Weingut Nik Weis - Sankt-Urbans-Hof

Top quality in a bandwidth that you rarely experience. From the Saar to the Middle Mosel, from dry to noble sweet, whether base or noble sweet rarity: Nik Weis presented this year a flawless series.

Picture: Nik and Daniela Weis and Annette and Christian Schiller at Prowein 2014

Nahe

Collection of the Year: Weingut Dönnhoff

Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff are representatives of the softer voices in the German wine world, and this is also reflected in their wines, which need time and attention if you want to experience what they are made of. You do not find this combination of inner peace, depth and complexity often in the world. 2017 may be the most beautiful collection of Dönnhoff wines(you do not want to say it differently that we have seen here so far. It is already hard to stop with the sweet-style wines. The series (dry) Grands Crus then makes you speechless.

Discovery of the Year: Weingut Göttelmann

Götz Blessing's wines are more of a rediscovery. Weingut Göttelmann is rarely mentioned when it comes to the wines of the Nahe. Given his current collection, one wonders why. Here you can buy blind, especially since the increase in prices has not kept up with the impressive increase in quality.

Pfalz

Collection of the Year: Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. v. Bassermann-Jordan

Under Ulrich Mell and Gunther Hauck, Bassermann-Jordan has long been known for top quality. In an area where there is no shortage of first-class producers, the estate stands out above all for its stability. This is all the more astonishing as it offers an enormous range of varieties and styles. Everything is perfect here.

Discovery of the Year: Weingut Martin Georg Fußer

For some time already you hear good things about the wines of the young, now completely organic winery. 2017 is another big leap for the Fußer brothers. Especially the dry Rieslings have become very good.

Rheingau

Collection of the Year: Wein- und Sektgut Barth

Under Mark Barth, the 20-hectare estate has become one of the absolute top producers in the Rheingau. This is not only due to the dry Rieslings, which year after year belong to the best Rieslngs of the region, but also to the high quality of Sekts produced by Barth.

Pictures: Tour and Wine Tasting with Lunch, with Mark Barth at Wein- und Sektgut Barth in Hattenheim, Rheingau– Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015)

Rheinhessen

Collection of the Year: Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller probably does not know where to put all his awards. One can only say that it is his own fault. There is just no way to leave him out when it comes to awards. More does not seem possible. Even the simple basic wines are already extremely good; and the grand cru dry Rieslings have reached the limit that seems possible.

Picture: Annette Schiller,Julia and Klaus Peter Keller at the 2015 Rieslingfeier in New York, see: A German Riesling Feast in New York City: Rieslingfeier 2015, USA

Discovery of the Year: Weingut Hofmann

Not only because of the consistently first-class dry Rieslings, it is worth to discover this estate. Also the Silvaners and Burgundies convince. And of course the Sauvignons, the house specialty.

Pictures: Jürgen Hofmann and Carolin Hofmann (nee Willems) with Annette and Christian Schiller. See: Slate meets Limestone (Schiefer trifft Muschelkalk): Weingut Hofmann in Rheinhessen and Weingut WillemsWillems in the Saar, Germany

Württemberg

Collection of the Year: Weingut Knauß

It is not so long ago that Knaus was our discovery of the year. In the meantime, the estate has made it to the top of Württemberg. Andreas Knaus does not only produce some of the most elegant and finest red wines in the country, the whites are also often outstanding - and that across all grape varieties. And do not make the mistake of overlooking the excellent Sekts!

Discovery of the Year: Weingut G. A. Heinrich

The red wines have always been good here, but in the last years have improved further in terms of fineness and polish. The "Dieb" (formerly: "Wollendieb") has become one of the best red wine cuvées in the country - and not just in the region. Since the whites have also gained noticeable in recent years, it is high time to rediscover the winery!

Weingut Schloss Johannisberg

Weingut Schloss Johannisberg is an iconic estate, one of the most prestigious estates in the world. It was here that the “Spätlese” was accidently discovered.

Wine making in the vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg started long before the castle itself was built, during the reign of Charlemagne. The hill became known as Johannisberg (John's mountain) in the 1100s, when a Romanesque basilica in honor of John the Baptist was built on the hill.

The Chateau that we see today was built in the 1700s by the Prince-Abbot of Fulda who was the owner of the estate for many centuries. In 1720 he planted Riesling vines, making it the oldest Riesling vineyard in the world.

Schloss Johannisberg changed hands several times during the Napoleonic wars and subsequent secularization. In 1816, Austrian Emperor Francis II, gave the estate to his Foreign Minister, Prince von Metternich, as a thank you for his successful negotiations in the reorganization of Europe during the “Congress of Vienna”. The last resident of the Metternich family at Schloss Johannisberg, Tatjana Princess von Metternich was a patron of the arts in the Rheingau and beyond and revived the castle to its former glory after the destructions during World War II. After her death in 2006, the Oetker family (yes, that's the one that produces baking helpers and puddings) bought the estate.

The vineyard surrounding Schloss Johannisberg is a single vineyard designation (Einzellage) in its own right. Like the Steinberg, it is one of a handful historic German vineyards which do not have to display a village name on the label. Thus, the vineyard designation on the label is Schloß Johannisberger. There are currently about 35 hectares of vineyard.

Pictures: Arriving

Long before printed labels were common practice, Schloss Johannisberg had its own system of distinguishing among its bottlings through the use of colored seals. Introduced by Fürst von Metternich in 1820 and in use to this day, the quality of a wine can be identified according to color.

Gelblack (yellow seal): Trocken (dry)
Rotlack (red seal): Kabinett (off-dry)
Grünlack (green seal): Spätlese (fruity-sweet)
Silberlack (silver seal): Großes Gewächs (ultra-premium dry)
Rosalack (pink seal): Auslese (fruity-sweet)
Rosa-Goldlack (pink-gold seal): Beerenauslese (noble-sweet)
Goldlack (gold seal): Trockenbeerenauslese (noble-sweet)
Blaulack (blue seal): Eiswein (moble-sweet)

Virginia's Best Wines: 2019 Virginia Governor's Cup Competition, USA

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam awarded the 2019 Virginia Wineries Association’s (VWA) Governor's Cup to Horton Vineyards for their 2016 Petit Manseng at the 2019 Governor’s Cup Gala. The Gala took place Tuesday evening, February 26, at the Main Street Station in Richmond, Virginia.

All wines competing in the Governor’s Cup competition must be made from 100 percent Virginia fruit. The Petit Manseng marks Horton’s first Governor’s Cup winning wine.

“It is my pleasure to award this honor to Sharon Horton and her entire winery and vineyard team, including winemakers Michael Heny and Andrew Reagan,” said Governor Northam. “Horton Vineyards is among Virginia’s true wine pioneers renowned for first growing many of the varieties that have taken hold in Virginia. In addition to the winning wine, the eleven wines included in the 2019 Governor’s Cup Case highlight the outstanding quality of wines being produced within our Commonwealth.”

Horton Vineyards’ 2016 Petit Manseng is composed of 90 percent Petit Manseng, 5 percent Viognier and 5 percent Rkatsiteli grapes. The wine is 100 percent estate-grown including their Berry Hill vineyard fruit. All fruit was hand-harvested and underwent whole cluster press. Fermentation occurred in 90 percent French oak and 10 percent stainless steel. Tasting notes state that the wine shows intensity and an explosion of flavors across the palate with a lingering acidic finish.

“This year’s case winner is especially exciting for both Horton Vineyards and the Virginia wine industry as a whole,” commented Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bettina Ring. “It is rare for a white wine to win the Governor’s Cup and it is the first time a Petit Manseng has been the overall winner. Also significant is that three of the wines in this year’s case are made with Petit Manseng grapes. This underscores a reoccurring pattern of many outstanding wines in Virginia being produced from lesser known varietals.”

The case is comprised of the top 12 scoring wines chosen from more than 500 entries coming from 102 wineries. The esteemed panel of judges was directed by Jay Youmans – one of only 51 Masters of Wine (MW) in the U.S. The panel diligently ranked each wine according to a unified scoring system.

Picture: Annette Schiller with Yay Youmans.MW

Alongside Horton Vineyards’ 2016 Petit Manseng, the 11 wines included in the 2019 Governor’s Cup Case are:

Barboursville Vineyards 2017 Vermentino Reserve
Early Mountain Vineyards 2016 Eluvium
Glen Manor Vineyards 2015 Cabernet Franc
King Family Vineyards 2016 Mountain Plains
King Family Vineyards 2016 Meritage
Paradise Springs Winery 2015 Meritage
Virginia Wine Works 2016 Hamlet Vineyards Eltham
Virginia Wine Works 2016 Michael Shaps Petit Manseng
Virginia Wine Works 2016 Michael Shaps Raisin d’Etre White
Virginia Wine Works 2015 Michael Shaps Tannat
Virginia Wine Works 2014 Upper Shirley Zachariah

Within the case, there is wide representation from all parts of the state including Central, Northern, Southern and Eastern Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley. This broad geographical diversity highlights Virginia winemakers’ ability to listen to their land and navigate the state’s varied landscape and conditions.

Virginia winemakers have developed a fluency in reading the signs from their soil and growing distinctive varietals that have found a home in Virginia. A testament to this is the variety of wines in this year’s case: three Petit Mansengs, a Tannat, a Cabernet Franc, a Vermentino and six red blends.

Now in its 36th year, the competition is a result of a partnership among the gubernatorial-appointed Virginia Wine Board (VWB), the Virginia Vineyards Association (VVA), and the VWA, which owns and manages the competition. Any wine made from 100 percent Virginia fruit was eligible for the competition, while ciders and fruit wines had their own category and medalists. All entries included an affidavit with a certification of 100 percent Virginia fruit and vineyard particulars, including grower names and location.

According to a 2017 economic impact study, the Virginia wine industry employs more than 8,200 people and contributes almost $1.37 billion to the Virginia economy on an annual basis. Nationwide, Virginia is in the top six states in number of wineries and wine grape production. More than 2.2 million tourists visited Virginia wineries in 2015.

Wine Producer Virginia

Virginia is the 5th largest wine industry in the US, with nearly 300 wineries and over 3,500 acres of vineyards. In the original charter of the thirteen colonies was a royal commission to pursue three luxury items that England was unable to provide for itself: wine, silk, and olive oil. Every colony made attempts to satisfy the requirements of its charter. Despite many years of failure, the early Americans persisted in their efforts. A big step forward was made in 1740 when a natural cross pollination occurred between a native American grape and a European vitis vinifera. Other successful crossings followed.

In 1762, John Carter, who had 1,800 vines growing at Cleve Plantation, sent 12 bottles to the Royal Society of Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacture and Commerce in London for their evaluation. Minutes of their meeting on the 20th of October 1762 declared Carter’s wines to be “excellent” and a decision was taken to reward Carter’s efforts with a gold medal for his wines. These were the first internationally recognized fine wines produced in America.

Picture: Virginia

Over the past 30 years or so, Virginia wines have experienced a tremendous development - to elegant and balanced, mostly European vinifera-based wines. Recently, Donald Trump as well as AOL founder Steve Case bought a Virginia winery.

Today, the vitis vinifera grapes Chardonnay and Viognier are the leading white varieties. Increasingly they are made without any or with neutral oak, to retain natural acidity and freshness. It appears Viognier is on its way to becoming Virginia’s official “signature grape”.

Picture: Christian Schiller and Frank Morgan of Virginia Live Chat. See: Virginia Wine Chat “Live” with Frank Morgan at Breaux Vineyards, Virginia, USA

For French-American hybrid varieties, Seyval Blanc is still popular, but resembles now the fresh and crisp wines from France’s South West. Vidal has become the backbone of the artificially frozen (cryoextraction), ice wine which I am not a great fan of. Cryoextraction is an approach, developed by the French, which kind of simulates the frost in the vineyard in the wine cellar.

Picture: Annette Schiller and Dave McIntyre of the Washington Post

As far as red wines are concerned, there has been a shift from straight varietal wines to blends, with the blends now being dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Mirroring the Virginia white wines, there is an increasing focus on neutral oak and clean, vibrant fruit.

Tannat, Uruguay’ signature grape from the South West of France, is showing up in more Virginia wines, usually as a blend. The only red French American hybrid which has performed consistently well in Virginia is Chambourcin, which resembles the Gamay grape of Beaujolais.

Finally, Claude Thibault, a native from France, has taken Virginia sparkling wines to a new level. His NV Thibault-Janisson Brut, made from 100 percent Chardonnay, is as close as you can get to Champagne outside of France.

Virginia Wines in Germany

Annette and Christian Schiller already presented 2 Virginia Governor's Cup Cases - 2016 and 2017 - in Germany. Both tastings took place in Frankfurt.

Virginia Governor's Cup Case 2016

The first tasting - of the 2016 case - took place in 2017 and included Riesling and German wine expert Stuart Pigott, star winemaker Uwe Lützkendorf, Wolgang Junglas, President of  FIJEV (International Federation of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Writers), wine retailer Armin Busch, wine tour organizer Annette Schiller and myself. See: Tasting the Best of Virginia Wines in Frankfurt, Germany, with Stuart Pigott: Virginia Governor's Cup Case 2016

Though Stuart Pigott is mostly known as Riesling and German wine expert, the by far most comprehensive assessment of the wines of Virginia recently is the in-depth article by Stuart Pigott on JamesSuckling.com in 2017. For an introduction go to Stuart Pigott's website.

Virginia Governor's Cup Case 2017

The second tasting - of the 2017 case - took place in 2019. By accident, I received 2 cases in Frankfurt. As a result, we decided not to have the tasting at our residence in Frankfurt with a limited group of tasters, as in the year before, but to have it in a restaurant in Frankfurt with a larger group, charge an entrance fee and offer a meal. We capped the attendance at 36, inluding Annette and me.

The tasting was led by Annette Schiller, ombiasy WineTours, with a power-point presentation.

Jürgen Lüttges, President of the Weinfreundeskreis Hochheim, gave a most interesting talk about President Jefferson's wine tours in Europe, when he was Ambassador in Paris.

Paula Sidore of Weinstory (Providing German-English language logistics for and from the wine industry: translation, tasting notes, and copywriting) shared with us her experience from Horton Vineyards, where she worked earlier in her career.

Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine La Martinelle in Lafare, Ventoux, Southern Rhône, with Owner/ Winemaker Corinna Kruse Faravel - Rhône Valley Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

Pictures: Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine La Martinelle in Lafare, Ventoux, Southern Rhône, with Owner/ Winemaker Corinna Kruse Faravel - Rhône Valley Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Culture and History, France

Domaine La Martinelle in Lafare, Ventoux, Southern Rhône, is located on the other side of the Dentelle from Gigondas and Vacqueras. It was founded in 2002 by Corinna Faravel.

Corinna was our host. Following an exciting cellar tour, including a punch-down exercise, if you were up to it, we tasted her wines in the cellar, both from bottle and barrel.

Corinna has been making white wine in Germany’s Nahe region, but was always interested in making red wine, so she came to the Rhône Valley. Love made her stay (she is married to Thierry Faravel of Domaine La Bouissière) and in 2001 she founded Domaine La Martinelle.

Pictures: The Dentelles de Montmirail

Ths domaine has 12 hectares of vineyard holdings on a series of small, terraced hillsides that run from 810 to 900 feet in altitude. Soils are a mix of limestone (like Burgundy, thus finesse), clay (contributes body and volume) and gypsum (good for soil fertilization; probably a result of volcanic activity from the Ventoux). While much of the Ventoux is located on alluvial lowlands, this mountainous eastern corner is widely held as the highest-quality growing area of the entire appellation. The regional ‘mistral,’ or cold northern winds from the Alps, rushes through these valleys in the summer months, keeping temperatures cool. The vineyards’ altitude works to extend the growing season, with harvest often in late September through early October.

Pictures: Cellar Tour and Tasting at Domaine La Martinelle in Lafare, Ventoux, Southern Rhône, with Owner/ Winemaker Corinna Kruse Faravel

Corinna Faravel

Corinna Faravel: In 2002, I purchased the vineyards that would become the heart of my estate in the southern Rhône Valley.

After a rough start – losing two complete vintages – I slowly built up the estate, selling some vineyards and buying new ones, and completing the construction of a cellar, carved into a rocky hillside outside the small hamlet of Lafare. Certain vineyards were replanted, and new, yet traditional, Mediterranean grape varieties introduced. The estate received official organic certification in 2015.

Martinelle wines should reflect the vintage and the land, with flavors that show the power and richness of local grape varieties in harmony with a southern definition of freshness and elegance of which they are inherently capable.

There is not one true way to make wine. For me, it has always been a question of finding balance – a fluid goal that requires regular, careful observation both in the fields and cellar. Nature communicates, and it is our responsibility to listen.

And after all the work is done, wine is to be opened and enjoyed! Martinelle is my way of expressing this essential joie de vivre, with wine the inspiration for bringing people together – a truth I learned as a child from my parents and have carried with me ever since.

Pictures: Cellar Tour

Vineyards at Altitude

Martinelle occupies 11.5 hectares on the eastern slopes of the imposing limestone cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The landscape is marked by steep hills, and vineyards share space with olive and pine trees with aromatic herbs growing among vineyard rows.

All my vines are planted on southeast-facing terraces, which meet the sun the moment it crests over Mount Ventoux, and yet are protected from the afternoon’s intense heat.

Vines are cared for according to organic principles, and the estate was officially certified by Ecocert in 2015.

Pictures: Punshing-down

Ventoux

The Martinelle vineyard is my “monopole,” a contiguous 8.5-hectare plot, the centerpiece of which are terraces that cascade from 300 meters at the summit to 270 meters in altitude.

Decomposed limestone here mixes with subsoils of clay and gypsum, a combination that is rocky and nutrient-poor; the clay helps the soil retain water, preventing hydric stress even in the warmest and driest of years.

Some 5.5 hectares are planted to Grenache, 1.8 hectares to Syrah and Petite Serine, and the rest to Mourvèdre and Counoise. I also have a half-hectare of Clairette here, for my Ventoux Blanc.

Pictures: Tasting at Domaine La Martinelle with Owner/ Winemaker Corinna Kruse Faravel

Beaumes de Venise

The vineyard Bramadou forms a natural “clos,” surrounded entirely by pine, oak and olive trees, at 330 meters in altitude. It totals 2.85 hectares, with 1.4 hectares planted to Grenache and one-hectare to Syrah.

My vines, from 30 to nearly 50 years old, grow on soils from the Triassic geological period, created between 200 to 230 million years ago. These soils bring together decomposed limestone and gypsum, the soil’s high iron content giving it a ruddy, orange-red hue.

Unique in the Rhône Valley, these soils, which are usually found deep below the surface, break through on the eastern side of the Dentelles de Montmirail, exactly where Bramadou is located.

The Wines we Tasted

We tasted 5 wines.

2017 Domaine Martinelle Ventoux Blanc

In the Martinelle vineyard, my Clairette vines (planted in 2007 and 2013) grow at altitude, facing east, on limestone soils. For this late-ripening, native southern grape, a chance to reach its full potential…as a single-varietal wine. Mediterranean-inspired freshness, ripe fruit, herbal notes and balanced alcohol – this is a true southern white wine!

2009 Domaine Martinelle Ventoux Rouge

Martinelle is both the name of my first vineyard and my winery. It also represents what’s most important to me as a winemaker – to create a wine that provides pleasure while telling an interesting story about the land. It is an invitation to explore these northern Provençal hills, amid the scents of lavender and thyme, in good company. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise.

2016 Domaine Martinelle Beaumes de Venise

This small-production cru wine comes from vines grown in a natural oasis of olive and pine trees, spiced with the aromas of wild thyme and rosemary. The ruddy, iron-rich soils at this special site are unique not only in the appellation but in the Rhône Valley. A blend of Grenache and Syrah.

2015 Domaine Martinelle Vin de Table – Le 15ème

My Vin de Table is a tribute to the vibrant character of southern red grapes and their endless potential. This is a wine that talks to me personally, showing me the heights that the soulful combination of Grenache and Syrah can achieve. Just as the top Champagne houses craft vintage wines only in the best years, I bottle my Vin de Table only when I feel the vintage is exceptional. It is a wine that should be cellared and shared in the best company.

Vintage 2015 is an exceptional vintage for the region. After a mild winter and spring, summer was hot and dry; yet a few rainstorms in July and August kept vines from suffering from a lack of water and helped grapes ripen evenly. The harvest was trouble-free, and fruit perfectly healthy. In short, everything a winemaker could ask for! 2015 is marked by its ripeness of fruit, its suave tannins and length; this is a vintage that offers immediate pleasure while at the same time, has resulted in wines that should age with grace for a number of years.

Harvest September 19 and October 1. Yields 25 hl/ha. Blend 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah and 33% Mourvèdre. Vines cared for organically. Grapes sorted in the fields and in the cellar. Lightly crushed, and fed into unlined cement tanks by gravity. Fermented on indigenous yeasts. Gentle extraction, with lees stirring. Aged for ten months in unlined cement egg. Bottled (unfined and unfiltered) in August 2016. 400 bottles (750ml) 120 magnums (1.5L)

Sekt

Germany is one of the largest sparkling wine markets in the world. 500 million of the 2 billion bottles of sparkling wine produced in the world is consumed in Germany. Sparkling wine produced in Germany is called Sekt. Sekt is made in all German wine regions.

All production methods - the méthode champenoise, the transversage method, the charmat method, the méthode ancestrale and the carbonation method - are used.

There are three groups of Sekt makers: (i) large and (ii) smaller Sekt Houses, which only make Sekt and (iii) winemakers, who make predominantly wine, but complement their wine selection by a few Sekts.

The Sekts produced by large Sekt estates tend to be in the demy-sweet and sweet range and made by using the charmat Method, while the Sekts of smaller estates and winemakers are mostly in the brut and extra brut range, made according to the méthode champenoise.

Picture: Tasting at Sekthaus Raumland in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Rheinhessen, with Heide-Rose and Volker Raumland - Germany-South and Alsace 2017 Tour by ombiasy WineTours

At the top, premium and ultra-premium Sekts are made according to the méthode champenoise. To indicate that it is made like Champagne the label says "Traditionelle Flachengährung"/ Traditional Method. One of the requirements is that it has aged on the lees in the bottle for at least 9 months.

On the other side of the quality spectrum, you find just "Sekt" on the label, made at least partially from imported wines from Italy, Spain and France. If it says "Deutscher Sekt", the grapes are all from Germany.

There are also lots of semi-sparkling wines (Perlwein), which can range from really cheap to excellent quality wines.

German production of sparkling wines dates back to the early 1800s, when G. C. Kessler & Co. was founded by Georg Christian Kessler, who had previously worked at the Champagne House Veuve Clicquot. Also, many (French) Champagne Houses have German origins, such as Bollinger, Mumm, Taitinger. See: French Champagne Houses and German Roots

Winzersekt

A Winzersekt is a premium or ultra-premium Sekts made according to the méthode champenoise. To indicate that it is made like Champagne the label says "Traditionelle Flachengährung"/ Traditional Method.

One of the requirements is that it has aged on the lees in the bottle for at least 9 months. Most winemakers far exceed that length.

Uses 100% estate-grown fruit.

Various grape varieties are used, including Riesling, Silvaner and Pinot Noir.

We visit Domaine Joseph Faiveley in Nuits St. Georges. The visit included a tour and a tasting of 7 wines with Mathilde Nicolas, in charge of communications. During the past 2 years, Domaine Joseph Faiveley underwent a major renovation. We were able to tour the new facilities and actually spent quite some time in the new tank cellar, before we sat down with Mathilde Nicolas for an impressive tasting.

During the tour, we met Jérôme Flous, who heads Domaine Faiveley's technical team.

Picture: Jérôme Flous

A few months after the visit of  Domaine Joseph Faiveley in Nuits St. Georges, we enjoyed a fabolous winemaker dinner with Eve Faiveley in Hattenheim, Rheingau.

Picture: Eve Faiveley with Annette and Christian Schiller. See: Dinner with Eve Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley, Nuits St. Georges, Bourgogne and 2-star-Michelin Chef Thomas Kellermann, Relais & Châteaux Park Hotel Egerner Höfe, Tegernsee, at the Rheingau Gourmet und Wein Festival in Hattenheim, Germany

Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Joseph Faiveley is one of the biggest domains in the Bourgogne and, many would argue, one of the best. This illustrious company has been based in Nuits St Georges since the days of Pierre Faiveley who founded the business in 1825. His son Joseph gave his name to the family business, to be followed by (1) the first François, (2) Georges who was instrumental in founding the Chevaliers du Tastevin, (3) Guy who developed the business in the Côte Chalonnaise, (4) François who recently retired and (5) now his children Eve and Erwan.

Pictures: Arriving

Guy Faiveley, a brilliant intellectual who had a collection of diplomas, had the difficult job of succeeding his very colorful father. Yet, with his impetus, the domain doubled in size. François Faiveley took over the domain at the age of 25. He was able to give it a new boost – using a precursor of the sorting table and carrying out cold macerations for example. At the same age as his father, Erwan Faiveley took over the domain in 2007, becoming the seventh generation. Recently, he was joined by his sister Eve.

Initially, the company was a classic négociant, buying and selling wine. Bourgogne wines started to experience greater fame in Louis 14th's reign, when those high up in the King's court and foreign ambassadors in Paris started to take an interest. It was against this background that Pierre Faiveley founded the négociant business in 1825.

But from generation to generation, with a strong commitment to the quality of Burgundy’s patrimony, the Faiveley family has purchased vineyards and is today among the largest owners of classified vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise.

Pictures: In the Tank Cellar

In 2013, Domaine Faiveley acquired 20 hectares of vines previously owned by Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot, which is based in Gevrey-Chambertin. All together, the firm now owns 123 hectares of vineyards among which 12 hectares are grands crus and 27 premiers crus.

Along with this focus, Erwan and Eve Faiveley and General Manager Bernard Hervet have renovated the cellars, which now boast state-of-the-art barrel presses, custom-designed wooden vats and among the finest, air-cured oak casks available in the world. Unlike many wine growers, Domaine Faiveley has united the management of its vineyards and its cellar under the direction of one technical director, Jerome Flous.

The grapes are entirely destemmed and fermented in new custom-designed wooden vats for the finer wines, conical stainless steel tanks for the lesser cuvées. Fermentation is slow and at low temperatures.

Wines mature afterwards in oak barrels in 19th century vault cellars that offer ideal conditions for long ageing. These barrels coming from great coopers have been rigorously selected for their fine grain and light toast. Both premier and grand cru wines may receive two-thirds new wood.

Many of Faiveley's top wines are hand bottled with no filtration. This in turn results in clean, opulent wines that often show Pinot Noir at its best.

Pictures: In the Barrel Cellar

Faiveley’s white wines are both silky and powerful. They bring together purity, tension and minerality. The red wines are the perfect illustration of a successful marriage of elegance, precision and concentration.

This write up is based on what I learnt from Mathilde Nicolas during recent tours and tastings at Domaine Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-Georges and the Faiveley web site, supplemented by the excellent write-ups on the web site of Berry Bros. and Rudd as well as Frederic Wildmann.

Tasting

Les Rouges

2016 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru "Le Clos du Roy"

The climatic conditions were very mixed in 2016. The harvests took place later than usual in order to allow the grapes to reach their optimum ripeness levels. Our wines present fruity aromas. The wines are smooth and fleshy. This promises to be a very distinctive vintage.

2016 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin Mercurey "Vielles Vignes"

The weather conditions in 2015 were outstanding and the vintage is characterised by its rich and very distinctive style. Excellent ageing potential.

The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines are aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (20-30% new oak) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in our hygrometry-controlled cellars at consistent, natural temperatures. The wines are aged in vats for 2 months at the end of the ageing process.

2012 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Porêts St-Georges"

wine-searcher average price in US$: 81

Exceptional weather conditions gave us an exceptional 2012 vintage. The wines are rich and indulgent with a good balance between richness and aromatic intensity. Excellent cellaring potential.

Deep ruby red colour. The nose discloses black fruits, toasty notes and a hint of oak. The smooth, round attack gives way to a powerful and structured mid-palate. A well-balanced and very persistent wine with excellent ageing potential.

2011 Domaine Faiveley Corton "Clos des Cortons Faiveley" Grand Cru

wine-searcher average price in US$: 112

A rather intense black colour.  The nose is powerful, concentrated, fruity and woody.  The attack is strong and tannic.  The tannins are firm, but well incorporated by the smoothness. We are in the presence of a wine of great volume, with supple tannins and very long-lasting aromas and tastes. This is a fine wine for cellaring.

1998 Domaine Faiveley Corton "Clos des Cortons Faiveley" Grand Cru

wine-searcher average price in US$: 163

"Clos des Cortons Faiveley" has been owned by the Faiveley family as a monopole since 1874. It is the domaine's flagship wine and one of just two Burgundian Grands Crus to bear the name of its owner (Romanée-Conti being the other).

Les Blancs

2015 Domaine Faiveley Montagny

Montagny is the most southern of the Côte Chalonnaise villages and lies at the border of the Mâconnais. The chardonnay vines thrive in this rugged terrain. The vines face east/south-east and are planted on slopes that reach as high as 400 metres above sea level.

2015 Domaine Faiveley Meursault

2015 Domaine Faiveley Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gain"

wine-searcher average price in US$: 75

In 1879, Puligny added its name to that of its more renowned Grand Cru: Montrachet. The exceptional terroirs of Puligny-Montrachet offer optimum conditions for the Chardonnay grape variety. The "Champ Gain" climat covers 10 hectares of vines situated just below "La Garenne" on the upper parts of the hillside. The name of this parcel signifies "land reclamation on the forest". The domaine has owned this climat since the 2014 vintage.

Weingüter Wegeler is comprised of 2 estates, one in Oestrich-Winkel (Rheingau) and one in Bernkastel (Mosel).

We visited the former. Following a cellar tour, we sat down for a most interesting tasting, including some older wines.

Weingüter Wegeler

Weingut Wegeler/ Bernkastel (Mosel)

The Bernkastel Estate was founded by Julius Wegeler in the year 1900. In 1902 and 1903, after having bought a large part of the legendary site 'Bernkasteler Doctor', he had a press house built in the village of Cues on the outskirts of Bernkastel that was designed to use the principle of gravitation. This is based in the concept of processing the grapes on three different levels. Driven by natural gravitation, the wines are allowed to run through the individual manufacturing steps at their own weigth and velocity, to the largest extent free of intervention by pumping, siphoning or any other physical strain. Even today, in the 21st century, this procedure is considered State-Of-The-Art technology.

Pictures: Arriving at Weingut Wegeler in Oestrich-Winkel, Rheingau

Weingut Wegeler/ Oestrich Winkel (Rheingau)

Weingut Wegeler: The history of the Wegeler Estates is closely linked with the history of Riesling. After Geheimrat Julius Wegeler married a Deinhard daughter and after her father August surprisingly died, Wegeler - until then responsible for the export business of the famous sparkling wine producers - was put in charge of the company. The business flourished and therefore in 1882 the decision was taken to purchase a wine-growing estate in the Rheingau. The vineyards in Rüdesheim and Oestrich-Winkel are still owned by the familiy - the same applies to the manor. The vineyards belonging to our Rheingau Estate cover an area of 45 hectares. Over a length of 20 kilometers, they stretch along the river Rhine that weaves through the Rheingau on its way to the north.

Pictures: Cellar Tour

Weingut Wegeler/ Oestrich Winkel (Rheingau) - VDP

VDP: The historical wine estate with its picturesque courtyard is located in the heart of Oestrich. Today’s proprietors, the Wegeler-Drieseberg family, cultivate 44 hectares (ca. 109 acres) of vines in the finest sites between Rüdesheim and Geisenheim. The estate is dedicated 100% to Riesling. Its ambitious goal is to produce dry and lusciouly sweet wines of international standing. One of its banner wines is “Geheimrat J”, vinified as a dry Spätlese as well as a brut sparkling wine. They number among the region’s finest growths. In some years, the lusciously sweet Rieslings are also exemplary of the best the Rheingau has to offer.

The vineyard site Geisenheimer Rothenberg is famous for its highly concentrated noble sweet rarities. In 2007 this vineyard site produced a premium Trockenbeerenauslese with 312° oechsle, the highest value achieved in Germany in this vintage. The Geisenheimer Rothenberg was first mentioned in 1145 by the nobleman Ruthard de Rothenberch. The naming either means "Rodenberg" in the sense of "roden", i.e. land clearing, or it refers to the red colouring of the soil. On the mountain, there is a cross made of sandstone, which was built by Count of the Empire Friedrich von Ingelheim in 1808. Its inscription says " Following old legends, there used to be mill, powered by the wind, where now these vines are".

After the

and before the

Cellar Tour and Tasting, including from Barrel, at Domaine Marcel Richaud in Cairanne, Southern Rhône, with Owner/ Winemaker Claire Richaud

we had lunch at Lunch at Restaurant Le Mesclun in Séguret, Southern Rhône.

Before lunch, we had time to wander around. Séguret literally hugs the hillside topped by the ruins of its feudal château. Séguret is one of the official "most beautiful villages in France", and thoroughly deserves this distinction. You cannot withstand the charm of this medieval atmosphere and the historical treasures of this village.

Séguret

Séguret could be described as “vertically challenged”! Classified “most beautiful village in France”, it demands strong legs and a good pair of lungs. Narrow alleys, little stone houses, tiny sun-drenched squares… it is a place that has preserved all its ancient charm. Séguret in fact means “safe” or “secure” in Provencal. And there is another reason for which this village, which has enjoyed appellation status since 1967, wins the hearts of its admirers: its wines.

Less powerful than those of its close neighbours at Cairanne, Rasteau, or even Plan de Dieu, the appeal of its reds lies in their elegance and freshness, qualities much appreciated in these southern vineyards. Most Séguret wines include grapes from the three terroirs associated with the appellation: the fertile terraces of the valley of the Ouvèze, the clayey-limestone slopes around the village itself and, behind the village, the poorer arid soils of the steeper hillsides. This diversity of soils is exploited by the wine-growers to produce wines with the complexity and balance required by the canons of the appellation. The rosés and whites also have a distinctive freshness, with notes of exotic fruits and white blossom.

Séguret AOC red wines are made from a minimum of 70% Grenache grapes, together with Syrah and Mourvèdre (making up at least 20% of the blend). These are sombre, deep-red wines, which sparkle in the light. The bouquet is redolent of vanilla and mocha, followed by the aromas of jam and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is initially smooth and concentrated, the tannins persisting with hints of roasted coffee.

The main constituent of rosé blends is the Grenache grape, associated with Syrah and Mourvèdre (more than 20% of the blend), with other varieties permitted by the appellation (Cinsault…) restricted to 20%. The resulting wines are non-sparkling, a light pink in colour. The nose is a cheerful combination of peardrop and crushed strawberry, while in the mouth the wine is mellow with notes of red-berry fruits.

The appellation’s whites are made mainly from Roussanne and Marsanne grapes. They are an attractive straw colour with a gentle, very floral nose suggestive of peach, pear and citrus fruits. The attack is full-bodied, developing delightfully subtle flavours.

Signs of the Roman colonisation at Séguret provide the earliest evidence of viticulture in the region. The archaeological finds include an altar to Silvanus, represented with a cooper’s mallet. The presence of vineyards in the region is first documented in the founding charter of the Monastery of Prébayon (611).

Séguret’s vocation as a wine-growing area developed, from the 10th century, under the authority of the counts of Toulouse, then the princes of Orange. In the 13th century, the County became papal territory. Writings of the period mention wine from Séguret as being much in demand, a sign of its growing reputation.

The first wine-growers’ confraternity headed by a woman, the ‘baylesse’, was founded at Séguret in 1685. The local wine-growers revived this association in 1985 as the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Gouste-Séguret Compagnons de Saint-Vincent!

The area was granted its Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret appellation in 1967.

We enjoyed the gorgeous view from the restaurant’s terrace to the vineyard covered valley below and the fabolous lunch.

Service souriant.

Touring the Vineyards of Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, with Armelle Rion, Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion – Bourgogne (and Champagne) Tour by ombiasy WineTours 2018, France

Picture: Touring the Vineyards of Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, with Armelle Rion, Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion – Bourgogne (and Champagne) Tour by ombiasy WineTours 2018, France

We visited Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion in Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits. The visit consisted of two parts.

First, Armelle Rion joined us in the bus and took us on a tour of the vineyards of Vosne-Romanée.

Seond, we returned to the domaine, where we did a cellar tour and sat down for a tasting with Armelle Rion.

This posting covers the vineyard tour. A second posting will cover the cellar visit and tasting.

Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion is a family affair and we also met Bernhard Rion as well as Melissa and Alice Rion and Alice's husband Louis Rion. With the latter two we recently enjoyed a winemaker dinner at the French Embassy in Washington DC, USA. Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion is well represented in the Washington DC area via Elite Wines.

Domaine Rion was founded in 1880 by Pierre Rion. His son Louis substantially enlarged the domaine. Forth generation Bernard Rion now manages the Domaine Rion with his wife Armelle and his daughter Alice. Wine production is very traditional with a high respect for nature. Vineyard management methods rely on natural or very specific products. 'Pheronomes' are diffused around the vineyards to provoke sexual confusion in certain insects eliminating the need to use insecticides. The average vines are over 50 years old and their roots draw nutrition from deep down in the ground.

Vosne-Romanee Wine (wine searcher)

wine searcher: Vosne-Romanée is a small commune in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits district, known mainly for its red wine from the Pinot Noir grape. Originally named just Vosne, the village took the suffix Romanée in 1866 in honor of its most prized vineyard, La Romanée. It is often grouped together with the neighboring commune of Flagey-Echézeaux; while the villages are entirely separate, their finest vineyards are clustered together immediately north of Vosne-Romanée.

The classic Vosne-Romanée wine is considered by many to have the perfect balance of weight, structure, elegance and longevity. Tasting notes often refer to a combination of tart red fruits (particularly cherries and raspberries) and darker elements of undergrowth, licorice and smoke.

The village has been a known source of quality wines for more than a thousand years, since the arrival of the monks of the Saint-Vivant monastery. Today, it makes wine almost exclusively from Pinot Noir, although up to 15 percent of the local white varieties are permitted, to allow for natural planting variations and mutations. The wines are made under the Vosne-Romanée communal appellation (with about one-third coming from premier cru sites) and six grand cru appellations, each pertaining to a specific vineyard.

The entire surface area of Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru vineyards is only 27 hectares (67 acres – about half the size of the single Clos de Vougeot climat just across the commune boundary). This is divided between six individual sites: La Grand Rue, La Tâche, Richebourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and the most famous, Romanée-Conti. Despite this small surface area, Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru red wines are some of the most respected (and most expensive) in the world.

Vosne-Romanée's best vineyards lie just above the village, on the mid-slopes of the Côte d'Or; this is where the grand cru sites are located. Around these prestigious sites are dotted the Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru vineyards and some entirely unclassified land. The difference between a grand cru vine and one deemed worthy only of the regional Bourgogne appellation is sometimes a matter of a few feet.

Below this mid-slope section the slopes are too shallow to offer any degree of elevation or increased exposure to the sun. On the higher slopes, as the ground rises towards the spine of the Côte d'Or, the mesoclimate cools slightly, reducing the likelihood of the grapes attaining optimum ripeness and complexity.

Vosne-Romanée (Clive Coats)

Clive Coats: Nowhere is wine more noble than in Vosne-Romanée. Between the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru of Boudots to the south and the walls of the Clos de Vougeot at the northern end lie the 240 hectares of Vosne-Romanée vineyard: the most valuable piece of vinous real estate in the world.

Appellation Romanée Conti Grand Cru: The Romanée-Conti vineyard dominates the village, with its wines among the most expensive in the world. It is a monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Around 600 cases are made each year from the vineyard's 1.8 ha.

Appellation La Romanée Grand Cru: La Romanée is a monopole of the Château de Vosne-Romanée. Only 300 cases are made each year from this plot of 0.84 ha.

Appellation La Tâche Grand Cru: La Tâche is Domaine de la Romanée Conti's other monopole, and its 6 ha consist of the vineyards of La Tâche and Les Gaudichots.

Appellation Richebourg Grand Cru: The 8 ha of the Richebourg cru are divided between 10 growers, including Domaine Leroy and Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

Appellation La Grande Rue Grand Cru: The least-renowned of the six grands crus is a monopole of Domaine François Lamarche, and was only promoted from premier cru recently. Its 1.4 hectares lie between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti.

Appellation Romanée Saint Viviant Grand Cru: Domaine de la Romanée Conti owns over half of the area's 9.5 ha.

Although unable to command the same prices as their grand cru neighbors, the village is home to many excellent premier cru wines. Fifty-eight hectares of this is premier cru, and there are 11 of these. Five of them lie just above the grands crus, six on the same altitude or a little further down the slope.

Back at Domaine Armelle et Bernhard Rion in Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits

The tour of the vineyards of Vosne-Romanée ended at the domaine, where we did a cellar tour and sat down for a tasting with Armelle Rion. This will be covered in a separate posting.

Germany's Greatest Wines: 50 Exceptional German Wines - Falstaff/ Ulrich Sauter

Falstaff, a leading German wine and food journal, issued a list of 50 exceptional German wines. The list was put togather by Ulrich Sauter, who is in charge of wines at Falstaff. He took into account a number of factors, but at the end of the day it is a personal list of somebody who really knows German wine,

01 Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese, Egon Müller-Scharzhof

Already in terms of auction proceeds a world record: At the auction of the Großer Ring in 2015 buyers paid Euro 12,000 plus surcharge for a 0.75-liter bottle. And also otherwise this is a wine of extreme: It brings the highest possible grape maturity from the coolest possible top vineyard in the glass. And: Anyone who puts such a bottle in the cellar still does good to his or her grandchildren and great-grandchildren - these wines are still fresh after 80 years.

Pictures: Annette and Christian Schiller with Egon Müller, Weingut Egon Müller, at the Rieslingfeier 2015 in New York City, USA, see: The 11 Winemakers: Rieslingfeier 2015 in New York City, USA

02 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, J. J. Prüm

If you want to understand classic Mosel wine at its core and enjoy it in its pointed form, you can not ignore this label. Of course, typically Dr. Manfred Prüm and his daughter Dr. Katharina climb up the predicate ladder much higher than the "normal" Auslese. But this wine marks a maximum of its own kind: more drinking pleasure with such a combination of longevity and minerality is hard to imagine.

03 Niederhausen Hermannshöhle Riesling GG, Dönnhoff

Far beyond the borders of the Nahe Region - and especially internationally - the Hermannshöhle is the epitome of a dry German sinlge vineyard Riesling with depth and ripeness: What Helmut Dönnhoff has created in three decades in terms of profile and reputation, but above all in terms of qualitative reliability, is now being continued by his son Cornelius.

VDP: Wilhelm Weil, the fourth generation of the founding family, runs the estate founded by his great-grandfather in 1875. Since then, the hillside sites of the 90-hectare (222-acre) estate – Kiedrich Klosterberg, Kiedrich Turmberg, and Kiedrich Gräfenberg – have been cultivated exclusively with the precious Riesling grape. These practices ensure the production of individualistic, exceptional wines: cultivation of Riesling on a continuous basis; quality-oriented vineyard management aimed at reducing yields; selective harvesting by hand; and extremely gentle processing in the cellar. Today, many observers of the international wine world regard at estate Robert Weil, with its “château character”, as a worldwide symbol of German Riesling culture. Here, where tradition and contemporary oenological know-how are in harmony, the finest grapes yield tremendous wines, year after year.

Jan Christensen, Wilhelm Weil's Assistant, was our host. We first took a look at the vineyards from the tasting room and then toured the celler before sitting down with Jan in the chateau building for a formal tasting.

The Weingut Robert Weil wines are represented in the USA by Loosen Bros. USA.

Robert Weil - Peerless, Uncompromising Rieslings from the Rheingau

(Loosen Bros. USA): Founded in 1875, Weingut Robert Weil is considered to be one of the Rheingau’s younger wine estates. It is located in the heart of Kiedrich, a village first documented in the year 950. Kiedrich Turmberg and Kiedrich Gräfenberg, the estate’s top vineyards, are among the finest sites in the Rheingau.

Pictures: Arriving

The estate cultivates 90 hectares (222 acres) of vineyards, of which 100 percent are planted with Riesling. Today, Wilhelm Weil, the great-grandson of the estate’s founder, carries on the tradition of uncompromising, quality-oriented vineyard and cellar practices – a tradition that has been the hallmark of the winery for four generations.

Pictures: Looking at the Vineyards

The Vineyards

Kiedrich Turmberg and Kiedrich Gräfenberg are situated on a southwest-facing ridge and a steep cliff with inclines of up to 60 percent. Their soils consist of deep and medium-deep stony, fragmented phyllite partially mixed with loess and loam. This combination of barren stony soils, an ideal microclimate, steep inclination and southwestern exposure allows the grapes to hang on the vine for a very long time. The resulting wines are complex and rich in minerals, with great elegance and finesse.

The vineyards are cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner: organic fertilizer is used as needed; green cover is planted in alternating rows to optimize the humus content of the soil; herbicides are never used, and other protective measures are used only sparingly and with respect for habitat.

Grapes are harvested by hand, with an extremely critical selection that involves up to 17 rounds through the vineyards. The goal of this meticulous attention is to reap the finest fruit possible for wines in every Prädikat level.

Pictures: In the Cellar

The Wines

The character of Robert Weil Rieslings is marked by the mineral-rich soils of the vineyards. These elegant, complex wines offer pronounced fruitiness with nuanced flavors and aromas. They embody a perfect interplay of fine yet firm acidity with natural sweetness and extract.

The Wines Jan Poured

2018 Weingut Robert Weil Rheingau Riesling Trocken VDP.Gutswein

Made with the same exacting standards and meticulous attention to detail as the single-vineyard wines, the estate cuvées from Robert Weil are the starting point for the vinous journey into the best of the Rheingau. Sourced from vineyards neighboring their top hillside sites, these wines are classic Rheingau Rieslings that reflect the unique terroir of the region, as well as the distinctive, ultra-classy style of this legendary estate. The Rheingau Riesling Trocken is pure and intense, with a stony richness and a lively, well-balanced structure.

2018 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken VDP.Ortswein

The Village Wine (VDP.Ortswein) classification level, as the name implies, is used for wines that come entirely from vineyard sites in the same village. For Robert Weil, that village is Kiedrich, where the majority of their vineyards are located. The Kiedricher Riesling Trocken is produced from parcels of younger vines in the estate’s three hillside sites in the village of Kiedrich. It is lively and effusive, with balanced acidity and a stately Baroque body. Charming stone fruit aromas and citrus flavors are woven into a refined minerality giving it the versatility to accompany a wide variety of cuisine.

2018 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling Trocken VDP.Erste Lage

2018 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Turmberg Riesling Trocken VDP.Erste Lage

Kiedrich Turmberg (“tower hill”), a separate slope adjacent to the Gräfenberg vineyard, is rated as premier cru. The German wine law of 1971 had incorporated Turmberg into the Gräfenberg, but in 2005 it was reinstated as an individual, classified site. The steep, southwest-facing site has a slate base with a thin topsoil layer composed of stony, gritty phyllite mixed with loess and loam. It produces very fine, elegant wines that are less massive than their counterparts from the Gräfenberg. Turmberg is wholly owned by Weingut Robert Weil. The Turmberg Trocken (dry) is bright and pure, with a lovely herbal tone that is characteristic of this site. It has a finely focused mineral structure and a juicy grip on the palate.

2017 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Trocken GG VDP.Grosse Lage

The deep to medium-deep stony soil of the Gräfenberg hillside is made up of phyllite interspersed with loess and loam. The Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a perfect specimen of this mineral-rich terroir, displaying distinctive character and complexity. A full-bodied, dry-style wine, it offers a provocative balance of fruit, spice and flintiness. Fermented naturally in large wooden casks, the Kiedrich Gräfenberg Erstes Gewächs has a full, stony fruit aroma. It is weighty and complex on the palate, yet still quite elegant, with extraordinary length to the finish.

The Grosses Gewächs (“great growth”) designation is used only for the finest dry wine from a VDP.Grosse Lage (“grand cru”) classified vineyard. GG wines express the unique character of the vineyard and, being full-bodied dry wines, have great versatility with food.

2018 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese VDP.Grosse Lage

The outstanding quality of the Gräfenberg (“hill of the counts”) site was first documented in the late 12th century. It is a steep, southwest-facing slope in a sheltered side valley, with deep to medium-deep stony soil made up of phyllite interspersed with water-retaining layers of loess and loam. Yields are very low, resulting in wines with extraordinary concentration.

Always stunning, the Spätlese (“late picked”) from Kiedrich Gräfenberg is a massive wine of bewildering depth and complexity, with many layers of gorgeous fruit that unfold on the palate. It is a stately wine with power, harmony and impeccable balance.

TAG 2: Donnerstag, 20. Juni

09.00 Check-out.

09.15 Abfahrt

20.00 3-Gänge Abendmenu im Restaurant Au Lion d’Or in Kaysersberg.

TAG 3: Freitag, 21. Juni

TAG 5: Sonntag, 23. Juni

09.00 Check-out.

09.15 Abfahrt

10.00 Stadttour in Colmar.

Anna Lee Iijima - annaleeiijima on Instagram (Contributing editor at Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Reviews wines from Germany and the Rhône Valley. annaleeiijima (Instagram): A visit to Domaine Marcel Richaud in Cairanne was a highlight of yesterday's itinerary. The domaine is one of the benchmark producers in this still underrated Southern Rhône Cru. Marcel cites the winemaking of Marcel Lapierre in Morgon and Yann Rohel as a key influences. His daughter Claire, who worked with Lapierre after oenology school, now makes wine with her father and brother. Their wines are unacidified yet remarkable fresh and intently mineral. They undergo no fining or filtration and receive just a small SO2 addition at bottling. .

Claire Richaud was our host. We first sat down for a tasting and toured the cellar, before leaving, where we tasted from barrel.

Domaine Richaud
(Louis/Dressner)

Cairanne produces many of the best wines made in the vast Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages area due to a group of talented and dedicated winemakers and good terroir. Situated atop a range of low hills, with perfect exposure, looking east over the plain between the Aigues and Ouvèze rivers, the elevation ensures slightly cooler temperatures than on the Plan de Dieu, (as the plain below is known), where the summer heat is usually extreme.

Marie and Marcel Richaud run Domaine Marcel Richaud, with Marcel as winemaker and Marie as manager. Marcel tends 40 hectares of vines, his own or his neighbors’, and vinifies the grapes of about half this surface. His estate is made up of plots inherited from his parents and of rented parcels, so some grapes are sold to the local coop or to négociants. There are less Grenache vines than on most estates of the area, just 25% of the varietals grown, and the same amount of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The remainder of the estate is 10% Cinsault and 15% various local varietals. This mix is one of the reasons why Richaud’s wines have such great balance and finesse. Mourvèdre especially plays an important role in toning down the alcohol degree that Grenache easily reaches in a warm year: it requires more sun and later picking, and in Cairanne it is at the northern edge of its growing region. As is often the case, a varietal gives its best and most nuanced in such “border” territory, witness red Burgundies and red Touraines from Cabernet Franc.

The focus is on harvesting a healthy and ripe crop, and the wines are made in large capacity cement vats, each varietal vinified apart until a blend is done, about 8 months later. In 2000, a bottle and barrel cellar was built of yellow sandstone blocks (from the Pont du Gard quarry), and Marcel is taking great pleasure in experimenting with new and not so new casks on small cuvées.

Interview with Marcel Richaud
(Louis/Dressner)

This interview with Marcel Richaud took place in Bordeaux in June 2011.

Tell us about your estate.

From a very young age I was passionate about viticulture and winemaking, and dropped out of high school at 17 to study viticulture. I've always felt a very special energy in the vineyard, that my life was here in Cairanne, that wine from the region could be something special, and that I was destined to make it.

The estate was already in the family when I took over. When I first started I was working 14 hectares of my aunt's vines and I eventually inherited my father's land when he retired, an additional 15 hectares. This gave me a chance to save up a little money, and my first investment was to build a proper cellar. Once the cellar was finished, I then purchased some parcels with different terroirs than the parcels I already owned. One example would be L' Ebrescade, a clay terroir at the border of Rasteau. Over the years I've purchased about 20 hectares of vines, so I now find myself with around 55 hectares.

I own most of these but choose only to farm others. The vines I've inherited from father, for example, were also inherited by my three siblings, so I refuse to buy these because they are as much a part of them as they are a part of me. The same goes with my aunt's land that I started with. I prefer buying nice Cairanne terroirs that have no family tie so that I can carve out my own independence.

When you were first started, did you follow in your father's footsteps or use your own approach?

My father sold all of his grapes to a cave cooperative. The rules and politics of production meant high yields, mechanization and none of the work I do today: choosing to work with specific parcels and varietals, working organically and biodynamically, etc… So you could say that I fundamentally changed everything about the estate.

After deciding to break off from the cooperative, I was able to make my own wine that I could sell because of its high quality and production value. I also became heavily involved in what is now referred to as natural wine in France and abroad. As an advocate and member of the A.V.N (Association des Vins Naturels),I've believed for a long time that real wine is wine that sees no chemical treatment, no filtering, no commercial yeasts and no other technique that would specifically alter a wine.

I took over from my father at 20 and I've worked organically since day one. That was 37 years ago. At the time, I wasn't thinking about marketing or selling wine. What I was doing was accomplishing a childhood dream: to make a wine the way I wanted to make it with my name on the bottle.

In my early years, my father would often tell me: "You'll come back to selling to the cooperative when you're done having your fun." It took him a very long time to understand what I was doing and why I was doing it; for the first ten years, my family was very worried that I wasn't making wine like everyone else, that it was too much of a risk and that it could never work economically.

What's the work in the vines like?

We work organically so no chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. We work the soils. For me the vines are an entity that you cultivate, that you guide like you would a friend or fellow human being. Some people treat and heal others. My job is to treat and heal the earth and the vines. You need to take care of both because healthy soils lead to healthy vines.

And in the cellar?

The cellar is the accumulation and the payoff of what we've been doing all year in the vines. My grandfather used to say something that I find very simple and beautiful: "The Earth only gives you what you make." He was right. You can't treat the earth like an entrepreneur. You have to work with it, to learn to love it.

In the 37 years of winemaking, I've tried everything. Pigeage, remontage, carbonic maceration, oak, cement, stainless steel… you name it. And through years of constant experimentation, putting myself in question and trying new things, I've come to the conclusion that what really matters are the yields, the age of the vines and the terroir. If you want to make wines that express their terroir, wines that offer the customer a taste of a region, then you need to have excellent quality grapes, but you also need to make sure that the expression of those grapes that won't get altered with sophisticated vinification techniques.

Pictures: Tasting from Barrel

How do you feel about the AOC system?

I am personally convinced that the AOC system is a very beautiful thing. The original idea of the AOC was a system that would highlight the culture and history of a region's agriculture, and I believe in its virtues. The problem is the way that most AOC's are run. The heads of the the AOCs are technicians that confuse the vigneron's work as a fittimg within a category. In cases like mine, when you work with native yeasts, low sulfur and higher acidities you will often be penalized for deviating from a certain path, when in fact they should be encouraging us for making something you couldn't find anywhere else!

You mentioned earlier how you are part of the natural wine movement. As a vigneron who's been making wines in this style decades before there was even a term to describe it, how do you feel about the current climate of "natural wine"?

It's a movement I defend, but in no way am I a radical or an extremist. I acknowledge that nature does not always give us all the elements to respect the criteria of natural wine. On the other hand, the philosophy of working this way is a virtuous one worth defending. What we have with natural winemaking is artisanal winemaking as opposed to industrial winemaking. I think that customers are really starting to notice that compared to standard industrial wine, natural wines are original, rich and full of character.

I believe that in the future, we should be forced to put sulfur amounts on bottles. The customer has the right to know! And not just sulfur, but everything that goes into a bottle of wine. After all, we are obliged to list ingredients for every single nutritional product in the world. Wine is the only exception. This is no coincidence: a lot of people don't want you to know what goes into their bottles.

If you use the legal limit of sulfur in my appellation, 190 mg per liter, you can make wine with rotten grapes. And why are we allowed to do this? Because this ensures that vignerons can continue to machine harvest, not worry about the quality of their grapes and keep big businesses running. So that's why I defend natural wine.

We visited Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion in Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits. The visit consisted of two parts.

First, Armelle Rion joined us in the bus and took us on a tour of the vineyards of Vosne-Romanée.

Seond, we returned to the domaine, where we did a cellar tour and sat down for a tasting with Armelle Rion.

I already reported about the vineyard tour: Touring the Vineyards of Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, with Armelle Rion, Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion– Bourgogne (and Champagne) Tour by ombiasy WineTours 2018, France

This posting covers the cellar visit and tasting.

Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion is a family affair and we also met Bernhard Rion as well as Melissa and Alice Rion and Alice's husband Louis Rion. With the latter two we recently enjoyed a winemaker dinner at the French Embassy in Washington DC, USA. Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion is well represented in the Washington DC area via Elite Wines.

Vosne-Romanée

Picture: Annette and Christian Schiller at Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion in Vosne-Romanée with Bernard Rion and Alice Rion at a Previous Visit. See: Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion in Vosne-Romanée: Wine Tasting in the Cellar with Bernard Rion and Alice Rion – Bourgogne Tour by ombiasy WineTours (2015), France

Domaine Rion

Domaine Rion is in Vosne Romanée, on the Route National. Domaine Rion was founded in 1880 by Pierre Rion. His son Louis substantially enlarged the domaine. In 1952, the domaine was divided between his 2 sons. The older one, Marcel, stayed in Vosne Romanée. Bernard Rion has helped his father Marcel since 1973 and now manages the Domaine Rion with his wife Armelle and his daughter Alice.

Winemaking Philosophy

Armelle talked a lot about the winemaking philosophy of Domaine Rion, which is summarized on the web site of Domaine Rion:

Fertilizer: Organic fertilizer is used exclusively on the sandy slopes in order to maintain the structure of the soil. On average our vines are over 50 years old and their roots draw their nutrition from deep down in the ground.

Cultivation: The vineyards are ploughed in winter and hoed in the spring. Grass is then left to grow naturally between the rows and a light tractor,(limiting soil compaction), is used to hold it back from invading the vines.

Pruning: A preliminary pruning is carried out in autumn, followed-up by a thorough pruning in March. The canes are burnt to prevent any risk of infection.

Treatments: Curative only. We use rational management methods relying on natural or very specific products. 'Pheronomes' are diffused around the vineyards to provoke sexual confusion in certain insects eliminating the need to use insecticides.

Pictures: Cellar Tour

Grape Harvest: Picking is manual, de-stemming is very gentle and there is no crushing.

Fermentation: Natural fermentation is long, lasting from 2 to 3 weeks. The cap is punched manually and a stainless steel pneumatic press presses out at low pressure (2kg/cm2), ensuring fine lees on which the wine will mature for 18 months removing the need for filtration. New oak and oak barrels under 5 years old are used for the maturing process.

Bottling: Bottling takes place on the estate with the assistance of a specialized bottling company. New bottles are sterilized and the wine introduced under air-tight conditions. Top quality corks from Portugal are then used.

Conclusion: As one can see from the above description, every effort goes into producing wines to lie down which will develop and be enhanced over the decades provided they are laid down in a cellar maintained at a constant temperature.

Picture: Tasting with Armelle Rion

Tasting

We tasted 7 wines.

Armelle Rion: These balanced and complete wines are traditionally vinified. Totally de-stemmed, with a long vinification (2 to 3 weeks in open vats), and they are then aged for 18 months (half in new oak barrels). They are pleasant and fruity for the young vintages, but well-structured enough to ensure good ageing.

2014 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Cuvée Dame Marguerite Nuits Saint Georges Euro 34

Elite Wines: This blend comes from little plots in the north of A.O.C Nuits – Saint - Georges all located in the border of the A.O.C Vosne - Romanée. For this field, and in all the exploitation, the Domaine Rion makes a sustainable and rational agriculture, by working the soil without insecticides. Marguerite Rion worked all her life in the vineyard of the familial domain with her husband Louis Rion. In its first years, the cuvée Dame Marguerite is really round with a multitude of red and black fruits. With ageing, you will taste forest aromas.

Elite Wines:  Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru « Les Murgers » is a powerful, rich and complex wine. The mouth is very round with a velvet finish. When young, you will find many red berry fruit flavors and after few years of maturity, the flavors will change to earthy, forest and mushrooms. It will match well with red meats, grilled or in sauce, game and lamb.

2016 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Bernard Héritage Euro 48

2016 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes Euro 55

Elite Wines:  An elegant wine, its mellowness is dominant, sustained by subtle tannins. Fleshy, very aromatic, with perfume of cherry, strawberry, and underbrush. Excellent pairing with roasted red meats and all the fine cheeses. You can age it for 5 years or more, and you should serve it in carafe.

2013 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Elite Wines:  Harmonious and elegant, this wine has a deep red color. You may get some red fruit aromas (cherry, black currant) in its youth and with age you will find some bark, tobacco, earthy taste. This wine is perfect with duck, roasted or in sauce and with fine cheese like Reblochon, Comté, Brillat-Savarin.

Happy 4th of July -> 4th of September: Bordeaux Tour by ombiasy: 1 Room Left, France/ USA

Dear wine friends,

first of all I wish everyone a wonderful 4th of July celebration. Enjoy being together with family and friends and watching the awesome fireworks in the evening.

Now in the dead of summer it may be difficult to think about drinking Bordeaux wines — but fall will eventually come and I have a wonderful trip to Bordeaux to offer:

Join me from September 3rd - September 12th when I travel with a small group (12 people) through the Bordeaux wine region.

Besides doing Châteaux hopping, I will also show you other aspects of “Bordeaux” that the usual wine tours to the Bordelais do not do: we will be introduced to the “Place de Bordeaux” buying and selling system unique in Bordeaux by visiting a négociant house, a wine merchant; we will visit a cooper to see from A to Z how a barrique is being made; we go to the basin d’Arcachon to see how an oyster is raised - and of course we will taste the oysters; we will experience the big bodies of water so important for the Bordeaux climate: the mighty Gironde estuary and the Atlantic ocean; instead of sitting for 2 -3 hours in traffic every day going back and forth to Bordeaux city we will travel around, spending nights in the heart of the Left Bank in Pauillac and in the heart of the Right Bank in Saint-Émilion to “feel” the vineyards; and of course we will spend some time in the vibrant, hip, cultural, cool city of Bordeaux.
Our Châteaux tour takes us to: Sauternes, Pessac-Léognan, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Médoc, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Blaye. We will visit well-known classified Châteaux - among them the prestigious Château Lafite-Rothschild - , classified under the radar Châteaux, and so-called “Petits-Châteaux” producing phenomenal wines. We will not only taste gorgeous Bordeaux wines, we will also have the privilege to enjoy many meals perfectly paired with the respective Châteaux wines right at the Châteaux with the owner / manager / winemaker.
This tour is basically a wine seminar on the ground: you will get a thorough understanding what “Bordeaux” is all about - and of course the tour is also lots of laughter and fun.

This tour is 90% booked, I only have 1 ONE!!! room left (sgl or dbl occupancy). Before I cancel the room to avoid being charged a penalty, I like to give you the opportunity to grab the last room. You can sign up here:  https://ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/bordeaux/bordeaux-registration

You find the detailed itinerary here: https://ombiasypr.com/index.php/wine-tours/bordeaux/bordeaux-itinerary. However a few appointments have recently changed from what you see on the website. I included a visit to Château Lafite-Rothschild and some time slots have switched around. But the general layout of the tour has not changed.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have further questions (if you want to call me: I am currently in Europe and only my German cellphone works!). You can also leave me a phone number via email and I can call you back. I am more than happy to answer all your queries.

CHEERS and HAPPY JULY 4th!🍷
Annette

BEST OF Deutscher Spätburgunder (Markus Hofschuster, Wein-Plus), Germany

Marcus Hofschuster is Editor-in-Chief and Lead Taster of Wein-Plus, a leading European on-line wine guide, based in Germany. Marcus Hofschuster is the man behind the reputation that Wein-Plus has gained over the past 2 decades. All wines are tasted blind. Marcus Hofschuster uses the 100 points scale.

From time to time, Marcus Hofschuster summarizes his tasting results in a "BEST OF" list. This time, he published a list summarizing his tasting results with regard to German Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from the 2016 vintage.

Picture: "Sam" Hofschuster (Wein-Plus).

Introduction

Marcus Hofschuster provided an introduction in German, which I translate into English:

Marcus Hosschuster: No, we are not yet at the top of the world with our Pinot Nois in Germany, even if this regularly stated by some journalists. This is an exaggeration and in fact hinders a serious appreciation of the actual achievements of German Pinot Noir producers.

Because the development in recent years is really remarkable. The main thing is not better wines at the top. Here progress naturally becomes more difficult. Outstanding Pinot Noir can only be made in exceptional vineyards with the best material at the right age. Even the most dedicated winemaker cannot do anything to change the fact that such conditions - especially in exactly this combination - are not available in abundance in Germany.

What stands out rather is the growing number of producers of good Pinot Noir in the country. Every year, new names appear on our list. We must emphasize that it is not just the top part of our BEST OF Spätburgunder list that deserves our readers' attention. Especially with the so-called smaller/ entry-level wines - those wines that most wine lovers drink regularly - you get today from our winemakers quite an amazing level of quality. Here the Pinot Noir producers in Germany are indeed already world class.

We tasted almost 500 German Spätburgunder red wines for this BEST OF list.

Revamped Weingarten in Bockenheim, with Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hofmann - A Place to Watch in Frankfurt, Germany

Pictures: Revamped Weingarten in Bockenheim, with Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hofmann - A Place to Watch in Frankfurt, Germany

In Frankfurt, Annette and I are members of a group of wine and food aficiniados that meets about once a month in a top restaurant. In late June, we had dinner at the Weingarten in Bockenheim. Weinsinn.

There were eight of us. We had 10 bottles of wine. Almost all of us had 4 course. We spent Euro 150 including tax and tip per person.

Pictures: Revamped Weingarten in Bockenheim, with Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hofmann - A Place to Watch in Frankfurt, Germany

Revamped Weingarten

Since Weingarten was opened in 2007 by Ulrich Karbiersch, who also used to run a wine store, it was a popular place for wine afficionados in Frankfurt. Ulrich poured interesting wines and served delicious wine bar snack food. This has not changed since Ulrich handed over Weingarten to his son Lars earlier this year. But Lars upgraded the place substantially by adding a bistro section to it. It is now a wine bar cum bistro. In terms of the latter, Lars hired Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hoffmann and is now also offering top bistro food at Weingarten. When we were there, some people just had a glass of wine with a snack as in the old days while others, like us, had a meal. In terms of the latter, we had a full meal with 4 courses, while others just had one, two or three course(s).

Dirk Eisel: Fabulous dinner with friends at the recently relaunched and re-opened Weingarten wine bar and bistro in Frankfurt, Germany, which now also offers à la carte dishes cooked by Jan Hoffmann, who was awarded a Michelin Star at Seven Swans Restaurant in 2015, turned it into a exclusively vegetarian restaurant in 2017, retaining the Michelin Star in the process, and took a one-year sabbatical in early 2018. Now he is back with a relaxed bistronomics concept showcasing his skill for inventive, flavourful dishes. The Weingarten also has a great wine list with bottles that you rarely come across in Frankfurt, if at all. Absolute recommendation for wine and food lover

Pictures: Revamped Weingarten in Bockenheim, with Michelin-starred Chef Jan Hofmann - A Place to Watch in Frankfurt, Germany

Sommelier Nicolas Buchberger

The sommelier, Nicolas Buchberger, borne in Lyon and raised in Lyon and Paris, impressed us with a deep knowledge of French and German wine. Nicolas has a Bachelor in Philosophy and a Bachelor in International Wine Business from the University of Geisenheim. He worked at wineries in Piedmont, Italy, and the Rhône Valley before joining Weingarten earlier this year.

Chef Jan Hoffmann

When Jan Hoffmann turned 15 he began his apprentice-ship to become a chef in Neuwied, Germany. He received national attention in 2016 when he was awarded a Michelin star as the Executive Chef of Seven Swans in Frankfurt, then turned it into a vegetarian restaurant and defended the star in the following year. At the time, Seven Swans was one of 4 Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe that served only vegetarian cuisine. The way from apprentice-ship in Neuwied to the Michelin star in Frankfurt included stops with Juan Amador, now a 3-star Michelin Chef in Vienna, and Villa Merton in Frankfurt with Chef Matthias Schmidt. Following a sabatical, Jan Hoffmann is now back as chef of the small kitchen of Weingarten with a most interesting bistronomics cuisine.

The Food

The Wines

We had 10 bottles of wine.

Bye-bye

Thanks Lars, Nicolas and Jan for a most enjoyable evening. We will be back!
