Invitation: German Wine Tasting at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar in Washington DC on March 11, 2025, 7:45 pm, lead by Annette Schiller, ombiasy Wine Tours (March 2025)

Dear wine friends,

I invite you to join me this coming Tuesday, March 11th at 7.45 pm when we do a tour through some German vineyards.

Magnificent Germany: A deep Dive into the rich tapestry of Germany’s wine regions renowned for its historic significance and signature grape “Riesling”.

Plunging into German wines is like a great high dive into a pool of dazzling wines — graceful, complex and utterly delicious. It is the grapes that act as interpreters to translate the spectrum of aromas and flavors provided by the soils where they grow.

Germany with its roughly 250,000 acres under vine belongs to the “cool climate” wine regions and profits tremendously from the shift in taste from over extracted, alcohol-rich wines to leaner, aromatic, lower alcohol wines. Viticulture in Germany has a long tradition, going back to Roman times 2,000 years ago. In the 15th century, the area under vine was four times larger than it is today. Wars, subsequent loss of territory, diseases, overproduction, and competition from beer brewing resulted in land turned over to other agricultural uses. In the 19th century, concentration on terroir and technological progress fostered a tremendous improvement of quality and the prestige of German wines, in particular from the Mosel, Rheingau, and Pfalz regions, resulting in prices above those for first growth Bordeaux wines. Today, all thirteen wine regions in Germany produce outstanding wines. German Rieslings belong to the best white wines in the world and German Pinot Noir grab more and more 1st places at international Pinot Noir wine competitions.

At this wine tasting we travel through 5 of the 13 German wine regions from northern wine regions above 50° of latitude to southern wine regions almost at the latitude of Burgundy. We will learn about the basics of the German wine world; the classification of German wine, the Riesling grape in its different expression depending on where it grows, and we’ll taste Germany`s signature red grape, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) to see how that wine varies between different terroirs. We'll taste 3 Rieslings and 2 Spätburgunder, all five wines are from top-notch producers.

We will taste the following wines:

1) 2023 Riesling dry, Weingut Clemens Busch, Mosel

2) 2020 Riesling dry, Weingut Rudolf Fürst, Franken

3) 2020 Riesling dry, Weingut Weedenborn, Rheinhessen

4) 2022 Spätburgunder, Weingut Dautel, Württemberg

5) 2021 Spätburgunder, Weingut Burg Ravensburg, Baden

As usual we will have two cheeses and baguette from Calvert Woodley.

Please join me for this great tasting. This is a 30$ tasting.

Cheers Annette
