Main White Wine Grape Varieties in Germany, 1960-2023

Recently, the American Association of Wine Economists, of which I am a member, released 2 interesting charts with regard to white wine in Germany.

In the 1990s, white wine accounted to almost 90% of total wine production in Germany. In the following years, until 2005, the share of white wine fell to 65%, but has been increasing since then, with the share surpassing 70% in the last years.

Within that overall development, since 1960, there has been:

a steady rise of Riesling,

an initial rise, followed by a fall, of Mueller Thurgau and Kerner,

a demise of Silvaner (except in Franken), 

an steady increase, from a low level, of Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) and Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder).
