Annette and I spent the second half of December 2024 in Mexico City, with Katharina and Diego, who have been living there since February 2024.

For an overview, see: 15 Days in Mexico City, at Diego and Katharina's Apartment, December 2024: Daily Facebook Postings

Schiller's Favorite Wine and Other Bars in Mexico City

Si Mon - Roma Norte

We went twice to Si Mon wine bar, which has, arguably, the best selection of Mexican wines in Mexico City.

Restaurant Guru

SI MON it´s an intime wine bar. We focus on national drinks: Mexican wine, craft beer and mezcal. We offer delicious snacks prepared at the moment: pizzetas, focaccias, salads, cheeses, charcuterie and patatas bravas. Our space is honest and unpretentious.

Star Wine List

Si Mon is located in the limits of Colonia Roma, in a small place that looks like a basement, with brick ceilings and walls, and dim light (though enough to see the shelves full of local wine). Si Mon has gone from a closed space dedicated to wine tastings to an open wine bar with a selection of Mexican cheeses and tapas. “Bulk wine” is their catchword as a part of the idea to make wine more approachable.

Artenda Vinos - Narvarte

Artenda Vinos - Narvarte is a small, "natural no intervention wines" bar a block away from Katharina's and Diego's apartment that even carries the wines of Gernot KollmannWeingut Immich-Batterieberg in Germany. But, course, we had a low Intervention Baja California wine from Mexico.

Pulqueria La Antigua Roma - Roma Norte

Katharina took us to her favorite pulqueria, Pulquería La Antigua Roma, a small neighborhood bar, where we had an extraordinary time with the locals. This pulqueria is known for its good jukebox.

Pulque, occasionally known as agave wine, is a mildly alcoholic Aztec brew in its myriad flavors. It is one of Mexico's most popular drink, alongside tequila and mezcal.

Originally, women were not allowed in the main room of pulquerias. Still, today, at Pulquería La Antigua Roma there is a separate entrance with a sign "Departamento para damas". The ladies room is still there.

Second Visit

Before dinner at Limosneros.

Pulqueria Las Duelistas

Katharina introduced us to another pulqueria, the Pulqueria Las Duelistas. Again, guave pulque dispensed straight from the barrel, graffiti-art murals, a juke box, lots of fun and the pissoir in a corner of the tavern.

Over time, the Aztec drink has gone from a quaint rural drink to a mark of Mexican resistance against the beer of the foreign elites.

Local 1 - Roma Norte

Also in the Roma Norte district, the Local 1 has a nice selection of Mexican natural, low intervention wines.

Star Wine List

One of the most recent wine bars in the city, dedicated to art and wine (and some mezcal if you are lucky). This modern bar, developed by the former architect owner, has a small place inside for artists and their expositions which change every month; take a look at their social media to see the current one.

Here, you will only find natural wine from all over the world. The list changes continuously, which makes it a fun place to go to create your own wine flight.

Local 1 is a charming wine bar situated in the heart of Roma Norte, a neighborhood known for its rich cultural heritage and lively ambiance. This venue provides a sanctuary for wine enthusiasts, featuring an impressive selection of wines from both local and international vineyards. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it an ideal spot for both casual gatherings and intimate evenings. Guests can indulge in carefully curated wine tastings that highlight the diverse flavors and nuances of each selection. The knowledgeable staff is always ready to recommend pairings and share insights about the wines, enhancing the overall experience. The design of Local 1 blends modern aesthetics with cozy elements, creating a space where patrons can unwind after a long day of exploring the city. Whether you choose to sit indoors or enjoy the outdoor seating area, the ambiance strikes a perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. The bar also occasionally hosts events, including wine tastings and live music, adding to the vibrant cultural scene of Roma Norte. Visitors to Local 1 will not only savor exquisite wines but also relish the opportunity to connect with fellow wine lovers in a setting that celebrates the art of winemaking. Make sure to visit during the evening hours when the atmosphere is particularly enchanting, and the city’s nightlife begins to buzz. Local 1 is more than just a wine bar; it is a community hub where love for wine is shared and celebrated, making it a standout destination on your Mexico City adventure.

Carlotta Reforma Sky Bar of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel

Katharina took us to the Riz-Carlton Hotel which has a spectacular rooftop bar and restaurant in the 38th floor. The view was breathtaking.

The Riz-Carlton is at the Paseo de la Reforma, one of the city's main avenues with impressive high-rises, quite different from the area where Katharina and Diego live.

Luvina Vegan Bar - Narvarte

Next to Camaron Buchon Narvarte is the small, vegan cocktail bar Luvina Vegan Bar, which could be in Brooklyn. The wine selection is very limited.

Loup Bar - Roma Norte

Condé Nast Traveler

First impression?
From Gaetan Rousset and Joaquín Cardoso, this new spot is in the bottom space of the building that houses the cocktail lounge Artemisia. It's long and low like a wine cellar.

Cool. So who’s there?
Wine geeks, off-duty chefs, hip thirty-somethings, a few foodie tourists. Tuesday nights get packed when the owners invite wine makers to the space for tastings and talks.

How are the drinks?
Loup Bar focuses on the new wave of wines that are biodynamic, natural, and minimally processed. Some are a bit eyebrow-raising at times, but tasting them is always fun.

Worth ordering something to eat, too?
Cardoso is a young talent, having worked in starred kitchens in Europe and as the chef at Mexico City's Hotel Carlota. The braised meat dishes are made with rich purees and are fine matches for whatever you'd like to drink. There are a couple of smaller salads and vegetable dishes to start.

Did the staff do you right?
Attentive and warm, especially if Cardoso or Rousset are in the house.

Wrap it up: what are we coming here for?
When you want a nice meal with great wine. A great date spot that's intimate and low decibel.

Mexico City - Bodegas Henri Lurton

Annette Schiller and I drink the wines of @Henri Lurton - Château Brane-Cantenac in Margaux/ Bordeaux @Grand Cru Classe 1855 - on a regular basis.

We also had the privilege of meeting Henri many times in Margaux/ France and Washington DC/ USA, with Ombiasy Public Relations and Wine Tours. Last time we met Henri at a tasting with Panos Kakaviatos, he told us about his venture in Mexico.

Before dinner at Em we found Henri's wines at the Vino Dcl Contre next door.
