Annette and I spent the second half of December 2024 in Mexico City, with Katharina and Diego, who have been living there since February 2024.

For an overview, see: 15 Days in Mexico City, at Diego and Katharina's Apartment, December 2024: Daily Facebook Postings

On Monday December 30, 2024,  after fruit shopping in the street market of Katharina and Diego's Narvarte neighborhood, we went to the POLANCO CDMX neighborhood, one of the wealthiest districts of Mexico City, known for high rents, designer clothing stores, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim's (the richest man in the work a few years ago) futuristic Museo Soumaya and Pujol Restaurant, Polanco (which Wolfgang Faßbender reviewed in the NZZ Neue Zürcher Zeitung recently). Many embassies are there, including the @Deutsche Botschaft Mexico City Embajada de Alemania en México and, again, as in many other parts of Mexico City, a large number of impressive skyscrapers.

For dinner, we went back to the Historic District, Mexico City, where Katharina had managed to get a 9 pm reservation at Limosneros on short notice.

We took our pre-dinner drinks at the very basic Pulquería La Antigua Roma with the locals...

and then went over to the high-end MICHELIN Guide listed Limosneros

to dine with mostly expats and tourists, but also with a few Mexicans.

We chose the 10-course tasting menu for about US$100. It was excellent. At Michelin star level, as you frequently read in social media? The votes at our table were split. But we all agreed that it was well above the food at ROSETTA and well below at Em, both Michelin-starred.

As for wines, the 4 of us had 3 bottles of wine, including a red Mexican wine and 2 dry Rieslings from Germany - from Weingut Künstler and Peter Jakob Kühn, both German winemakers close to our hearts.
The selection of German wines at Limosneros was surprisingly good. I do not know any restaurant in the Washington DC area that offers a selection of German wines, including dry white and red, at that level.
Limosneros is owned by Pablo Juan Ballesteros. Chef Atzin Santos has been heading the kitchen team for many years. He is a well-known Mexican chef, who defines his style as "experimental with Mexican products". Recently, he settled in Houston, Texas, and is shuttling between Houston and Mexico City. His sous-chef who was in charge on Monday came by for pictures at the end of this memorable meal.

Limosneros/ Michelin

Taking its name from the "limosneros walls" built in ancient times, this centrally located spot is perfectly poised for downtown dwellers and visitors. From the remnants of an old fountain in the entrance hall to the walls hung with mirrors from Tlayacapan, Puebla talavera, and Huichol embroidery, this place is loaded with charm.

This kitchen has a clear respect for tradition, even reviving old recipes, but it's all done with an infusion of contemporary flair. Opt for the tasting menu and you'll be rewarded with a tour of their flavorful, well-prepared cuisine, or choose the unusual-but-intriguing taco tasting, which also includes a sweet offering.

Limosneros/ New Worlder

Lesser-known that some of the other spots on this list is restaurateur Juan Pablo Ballesteros’ lovingly restored bi-level colonial, which is helping to reinvigorate Centro’s fine dining scene. Great grandson of the family behind landmark Café Tacuba next door, Ballesteros’ resulting dining room is a bright space with stone and brick walls accented by blown glass from Tonalá, Talavera plates from Puebla, Huichol art from Nayarit, agave plants from Jalisco, and aged wood from Morelosá. Serving boundary-pushing dishes like cocopache, Mexican beetles, over zucchini flower raviolis and an upscale pancita, or tripe soup which is typically used to cure hangovers, the tasting menu offers a different look at Mexico’s bounty from lesser-known chefs. Fans of Mexican wine should be sure to check out the impressive and extensive Mexican wine list. limosneros.com.mx

Limosneros/ The Getaway

Culinary creativity and distinctive decor are the top attractions at Limosneros in the Historic Center. Chef Atzin Santos merges modern cuisine and classic Mexican dishes, incorporating seasonal ingredients. From the lomito limosnero to the chiles en nogada, each dish is carefully crafted. The food presentation is stunning, and there's a stand-out six-course taco-tasting menu. A rustic rope ceiling, stone walls, and vintage chandeliers create a fun vibe for enjoyable dining.

Limosneros: For the last 12 years, the chefs at Limosneros we have collected recipes and memories, we have learned techniques, teetering on the stilts of creativity and tradition.

We took on the task of rescuing and planting endemic and dusty seeds in our Ome garden; in a tireless search for ingredients and possibilities.

Today, our experiences and discoveries converge with the passion we feel for our culture, to capture a small part of the wealth of our country on your tables.

Limosneros it is for us, a tribute to Mexican gastronomy and the most noble way to express our identity.
