The new Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland – for 2024 – was published
in November 2023. This was the 36. release of this wineguide. It reviews more than 2.000
wines of more than 600 producers.
Its rating symbol for winemakers is a grape and Germany’s best
winemakers are awarded 1 to 5 grapes, red or black. 5 red grapes is
better than 5 black grapes (= 4.5 grapes). The wines are rated using the
1 to 100 points scale.
This is the first in a series of postings which I am releasing with regard to the Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland 2024:

Szene.“

Collection of the Year: Martin Waßmer, Bad Krozingen, Baden
Cellar Master of the Year: Nicolas Frauer, Juliusspital, Franken
Co-operative of the Year: Becksteiner Winzer, Baden
Newcomer of the Year: Simon Hornstein, Weingut Hornstein, Bodensee, Württemberg
Visionary of the Year: Tobias Kreis & Ivan Giovanett, Weingut Sorentberg, Mosel
The two young winegrowers Tobias Treis (Reil/Mosel) and Ivan Giovanett
(Neumarkt/South Tyrol) have recultivated the almost forgotten single
vineyard Reiler Sorentberg after 25 years of fallow land. The steep
southern slope lies in a side valley on the Moselle and is famous for
its long-lived wines. The red Wissenbach slate can only be found there
and gives this Riesling its distinctive spice.”
Stamp of the Year (Handschruft des Jahres): Tomislav Markovic, Baden
Tomislav Markovic: “I am a classic négociant-éleveur. Having 0,5 hectares on my own with Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Touriga Nacional, I am sourcing organic farmed grapes for my wines from good friends in Baden & Rheinhessen. Focus is on lot of handwork in the vineyard, including biodynamic aspects and taking care of biodiversity. My winemaking approach is low-intervention, with classic techniques and no additives or filtration if avoidable. The wines get time to harmonize and stabilize in a natural way prior to bottling.”
Impulse of the Year: Ulrich Mell, Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan, Deidesheim, Pfalz
Ulrich Mell left Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan, Deidesheim, Pfalz earlier in 2023 after 27 years with Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan.
