On May 14, 2022 the European Union and its Member State embassies across Washington DC opened their doors to the public for a day of culture, food, music and more. The French and the German embassies teamed up for a joint event at the Embassy of Germany.

The German Wine Sociery (Washington DC Chapter) gladly accepted the invitation by Astrid Jakobs de Pádua, Minister Counselor, Food and Agriculture, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, to have a table at the event and to present German wine.

Washington Post: European Union Open House: The European Union’s Open House, which launched in 2007, is the older of the two embassy days in D.C. It operates much the same as Around the World, only with a tighter geographic focus. Each country plays to its cultural strengths: Croatia offers tastes of its wine and talks up its scenic role in “Game of Thrones”; Hungary has a meet-and-greet with vizsla dogs; Finland, ranked as the world’s happiest country, promises to show “the building blocks of a happy, ordinary day in Finland” through nature, food and music. Lines are often longest at France and Germany’s joint celebration, held this year at the German Embassy on Reservoir Road NW, but with the always-popular British Embassy no longer participating, it will be interesting to see which countries attract the most visitors. The smart money is on Ireland, which is opening the ambassador’s residence for tours for the first time, or Sweden, with its rooftop deck on the Georgetown waterfront and exhibits covering women’s economic empowerment and art by Indigenous people. Most of the Board of the German Wine Society participated in the EU Open House this year, as well as several other member volunteers, so that we had three people manning our tent for each of the three two-hour shifts.

We opened 48 bottles of a Dr. Loosen entry level Riesling and served about 2000 paper cups during the day. So, a large part of the several thousand visitors to the German Embassy during the day came by our tent.  Clearly, despite the risk of rain, the EU Open House this year was as popular as ever and demand for our wine was high.

After our summer boat trip, I expect our first event in the early fall could be an Oktober Weinfest at the German Embassy celebrating our Society’s 45th Anniversary.
